Changing Properties In A DTS Package
Sep 26, 2000
Is it possible to change the database name defined in the destinatation table definition of the transformation object programmitacally?
We have different database names between dev and prod. The package was created against dev. I'm trying to copy the package to the prod server and programmatically change the database name where necessary.

In our replication environment, the subscriber is initially set up with an snapshot of the publisher database. However, after that, the subscriber and publisher are different and we can never re-initialize from a snapshot again (we purge data on the publisher to reduce the database size but do not purge the same data on the subscriber; we do this by stubbing out the stored procedures on the subscriber that purge data on the publisher).
If an article is added or dropped from the publication, using snapshot and synchronize, just these changes are propagated to the publisher (without an entire new snapshot).
However, if an Article Property is changed (change SCALL to MCALL under Statement Delivery options for the UPDATE statement), the interface REQUIRES an entire new snapshot. Is there any way I can avoid the new Snapshot? It overwrites the subscriber database and this cannot happen!

Hi,
I have a MS SQL Server Express database wich I upsized once from MS
Access. I can connect to it and get/insert data but I can't update the
field properties.
I've used Access 2003, Visual Studio .Net and SQL Server Web Data
Administrator, but I can't change the properties of existing tables. I
cán add new tables and add their properties afterwards. Since I have a
lot of tables it would be too much work too recreate them all. So how
can I edit my existing tables?

Has anybody used the "Use fast load" or "Table lock" options in the advanced DTS package properties ? These are supposed to be in the Advanced tab of the Data Transformation Properties dialog box. I cannot seen to find them. I want to set them in order to have the load execute in nonlogged mode. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
We have a list of 40-50 SSIS packages and could grow up to 100. Each one loads 5-20 tables. I’d like to write a program (probably another package utilizing "Script task/component") to:
1- List all the packages by name
2- List input and output tables and/or file systems for each package
3- List child packages and procedures that are referenced in each package
So I need to have access to the Package properties.
I would like to hear your idea/clue/tips and or any helpfull direction.
Thanks so much.

Creating a SQL Agent job to run a package works just fine. On the Step Properties, Set values tab, I can add variables and the values I want for them, no problem. The job runs just fine. If I want to go edit the values however, they're always gone.
Is there some security setting that hides the variables and their values which is on by default?

I want to input a parameter to my package. I have a variable, and I tried changing its value from DTExecUI.
I did everything as mentioned in http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2007/03/13/SSIS_3A00_-Property-Paths-syntax.aspx but I still get an error -
Could not set "Package.Variables[User::var_input_step_Name].Properties[Value]" value to "RAW".
The variable was originally read from a XML config file. I stored the package to MSDB. I then ran dtexecui, selected my msdb package, and in Set Values, I entered property path and value. I also tried removing the "", and I even deleted the XML configuration. Still the same error.
What am I doing wrong? Any Package Settings to make?
TIA

I'm currently trying to convert over packages from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. The biggest obstacle at the start has to do with converting my "Dynamic Properties" control. I use it to read an .ini file and load the user name and password to my connections. With 2000 it's nice and easy 1 file 3 lines. While trying to convert it I€™ve had nothing but problems. I've tried the Registry Entry but it forces everything into the Current User and I can't use that I need local machine. There is no documentation and I can't have a xml file with 1000 different username and password settings because 1 person has to update that file with the new passwords. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank You
Jerry

I am attempting to run an SSIS package from a web service. Right now both the service and package are on my local machine which is running XP. I have accessed the web service from a client application in debug mode. I am not sure if it is actually running under aspnet_wp.exe because it is XP and a development environment? (separate question)??? The package fails with a series of OnError messages similar to:
The result of the expression ""/c DEL /F /Q "" + @DeployFolder + "\catalog.diff.lz""" on property "Arguments" cannot be written to the property. The expression was evaluated, but cannot be set on the property.
An initial supposition is that the permissions of the web service are inadequate for the package. I have the authentication as "Windows" and <identity impersonate="true" /> in the Web.Config file. When I break in the debugger the Environment.UserName and Environment.UserDomainName are mine and I am an Admin on the box.
the authorization is 'deny users="?".
The article that describes basic implementation of this in a Web Service states:
With its default settings for authentication and authorization, a Web
service generally does not have sufficient permissions to access SQL
Server or the file system to load and execute packages. You may have to
assign appropriate permissions to the Web service by configuring its
authentication and authorization settings in the web.config
file and assigning database and file system permissions as appropriate.
A complete discussion of Web, database, and file system permissions is
beyond the scope of this topic.
And how!
Note that the load is fine and that this is a run time error and that the package runs correctly when run manually from SQL Server using the 'run package' menu item in the Object Explorer tree of the SQL Server Management Console.
I need to know if this is an ASP.NET issue per se or XP or if this is even a security issue. And how to solve it! This is critical path so an expeditious reply with a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Does anyone know how to change the owner of a DTS package? Currently it is set to someone's domain login and I want to change it to the system administrator account.
The reason for the change is because I think this is why the package will not run when scheduled on the server, but will run locally for the user.
Thanks,
Brent.

Hi everyone,
I have a DTS package that exports table from SQL Server to an Oracle database. However, I want to change the order in which the tables get exported because of referential integrity. I can find no way in the DTS designer to do that! IS there a way to change this order other than specifying a querY for each and every table!
Thanks,

I have an ODBC connection string that is working fine with the following properties:
Database="XXXXXXX",Network="YYYYYY"; strangely no server is specified in the string, but it is specified in the ODBC Connection file.
I am trying to do a new server registration in SSMS for this database. However, I don't understand where the network spec is placed.
Under Registered server name I've tried:
YYYYYYXXXXX
When I browse the server for the database instance list, I receive "network path was not found".
I even tried:"XXXXXXX",Network="YYYYYY" for the registered server name.Same error message.
What am I doing wrong ?

I have a package using Slowly changing dimension in the data flow task. It works fine if the number of records are less but for a large file the package fails with the "Violation of Primar Key" error even though there are no duplicate records in the table.
for eg i have a table with employee database with a composite primary key comprsing of Name and Employee Id. I need to do an UPSERT depending on the Name and Employee Id combination. I have a file with 100,000 records and when i try to execute the package it gives an error 'cannot insert duplicate data' even though the combination does not exist in the database.
Please help.

I'm new to SSIS so I have not found the answer yet. I have a SSIS package that needs to be run everyday, that loads a basic text file. The only problem is that the text file may not be in the same location everyday so my users will need to locate the path prior to running the package. Is there a way to browse to the text file then have my users execute the package sort of like the old DTS in SQL 2000.

I saved a simple export/import package from the import/export wizard to a .dtsx file/package. Now I want to change the package to delete/truncate all of the tables before adding data. (since this has 80 tables it would have been a pain to edit each of them individually)
How can I easily go about doing this with the SSIS package. I can't find out where this would actually be executed.
Also, how can I actually view the code behind the SSIS package.
Thanks.

Hi!
I create a SSIS Package for ETL on my own machine. During development database was also on my machine. For access to this database an OLE DB connection was defined within a package in BI Development Studio. Everything worked well both in debug mode and testing package itself.
Finally I need to load data to a database on a different machine using this package.
I used several scenaries:
1) simply copied the package-file to estination machine, open it for execution, in section "Connection Managers" I edited connection string manually - changed server name and Initial Catalog. And try to execute.
2) on the destination machine I manually created an OLE DB connection (using Microsoft Data Link) to a different database (test succeded), Changed the extention of the connection file 'udl' for ' txt ' and copied its connection string to the field connection string in section "Connection Managers" (pointed in variant 1) ).
3) use Package Configurations, copied the deployment to destination machine, installed the package the way like written here - http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365338.aspx. Changed exported properties - Server name, Initial Catalog and also the whole Connection String. Also try to execute.
In all cases I recieved the same error execution message :
"Errors in the metadata manager. Either the database with ID of " OLD_DATABASE_NAME " does not exist in the server with ID of " NEW_SERVER_NAME " or the user does not have permissions to access the object."
As for access (username/pass) settings they are the same for both of them, I have the same administrative rights on both machines. And more with the same rights the ole db connection made was made manually in variant 2 - succeded!!! So I don't think the problem is here.
As for Error message - I think somewhere the OLD name of database (Initial Catalog) is saved, though I tried to change it. Though the NEW value for the server name is substituted.
Please, help me. I don't know what else can I try. And it is not a single case for my practice. So I think - something wrong in my actions.

Is there any way to change variable scope while using package templates?
I have created a package template that has several variables, a "typical" control flow and data flow. My goal was to try and use this as a starting point to create other packages within the same project and edit as required in the new package. I couldn't find any way (yet) to change scope of variables...these still show as belonging to the scope of package used to create the template.
Appreciate any help...thanks.

Hi,
I have a small problem. I've gone through the SSIS wizard and created a dtsx file which imports data from an access file into a SQL Server 2005 database. It has been set to delete existing rows and enable identity insert.
I then edited the .dtsx package in SQL Server Management Studio and added an environment variable configuration to allow me to change the destination database. In the script which runs the dtsx, here is what I have (it's an x64 system, so hi have to use DTExec):
"C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server90DTSBinnDTExec.exe" /file e: estimport.dtsx /set Package.Connections[DestinationConnectionOLEDB].Properties[InitialCatalog];newdatabasename
and here is the error I get:
Description: The configuration environment variable was not found. The envir
onment variable was: "InitialCatalog". This occurs when a package specifies an e
nvironment variable for a configuration setting but it cannot be found. Check th
e configurations collection in the package and verify that the specified environ
ment variable is available and valid.
I got the package.connections.etc etc path from originally creating the environment variable as an xml config file, then I could open the config file and see what the path was...
Any help would be appreciated :)

I have an ActiveX task containing vbscript that when placed in a DTS package, will set all Connection and DataTransformation (DataPump) information correctly. Additionally, the package appears to work perfectly afterwards.
The Question:
Why when I go into the DTS Designer and open a transformation (Black Arrow) between connections - that I get the "Verifying Transformations" dialog with the three radio button options of "Remove Invalid transforamtions", "Change Source/Destination", and "Remove all transformations and redo auto-mapping"?
It appears that the SourceObjectName and SourceSQLStatements are getting correctly updated as well as the DestinationObjectName, etc.
Is there a property that is supposed to be set when I modify the source and destination properties in my code to prevent this dialog?
Thanks a bunch in advance for any assistance

I originally developed SSIS packages with the destination DB to be SQL Server 2005 for unit testing on my desktop. We are planning on deploying to Oracle. After changing the Provider and other attributes in the configuration file the package loads, however there are lots of issues. The primary one is that the mappings are gone. I'm not sure if that is the result of how the table names are stored "Oracle"."File" versus [SQLSERVER].[File] . Even after attempting to change the way the table names appear I still get the message "the external metadata column is out of sync with the data source columns". Then it lists all of the columns that need to be added.
Is there any way to accomplish this that you are aware of.
Thanks

Often when I open an SCD component that was previously configured I find that the configurations are lost. The "Input Columns" and the "Key Type" columns on the first screen ("Select a Dimension Table and Keys") are blank. The "Dimension Columns" column is still populated.
If I run the package, the SCD component appears to function the way it was configurated to function. However, the settings cannot be viewed.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any ideas why this happens?
Thank you.

Hi,
Our company wants to allow our customers the ability to import employee data. Each customer's employee data changes depending on things like organisation structure etc. so the format of the data to be imported needs to change. We can do a lot of this with dynamic SQL, but are looking at moving it to SSIS as we think it will save us a lot of pain later on and for other features in SSIS.
We're stuck at a fairly early part of the process as we don't know how to dynamically import our spreadsheet. So far our best idea is to connect to the excel connection as the only step in the data task and then to use a script task on the control task, write code to connect to the excel source (set the excel source to not treat the first row as headers so we can do a 'select top 1 *...' ) then create a dynamic sql command to create the table.
Once this is done we would then have another data task that actually puts the data into the newly created table. This all sounds very difficult though. What are the options for doing what we want to do... have a feeling that we're missing something basic.
Any help appreciated,
TIA, Anthony.

I'm using a shared data source to connect an Oracle server in my packages. After changing the database user password in the shared data source, I noticed the package concerned would fail with the following description.
Source: "OraOLEDB"Â Hresult: 0x80004005Â Description: "ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied".
Is there a way to ensure the packages will use the latest information in the shared data source? I did do a Rebuild before executing the packages.

Hello!
We are having problems with a single SQL Server where the Server properties will not save, and always revert to the default.
It occurs only on those tabs with "configured" and "running" options at the bottom. Other tabs will keep the settings we custom.
The big problem is with the memory and processor tabs which even when we've made only a single change and stopped and started the service, reverts back to a default.
Any clues - we are logged in as "sa" and have not removed the SA priviledges.
Thanks for any help,
Simon

EXEC sp_addextendedproperty
@name = 'col_Programs_ID_Description',
@Value = 'The Unique Identifier for a specific Program',
@level1Type = 'Programs',
@level2Type = 'ID'
I get the following error:

An invalid parameter or option was specified for procedure 'sp_addextendedproperty'.
NOTE: If I dont use the last 2 parameters this procedure runs fine, but it adds the Extended Property to the Database Level while I'm trying to add it to the TABLE-->COLUMN level.
