Changing The DataType Of A Coluumn In An In-Memory Dataset

Apr 11, 2005

Here is the issue. I have ReadOnly Access to a database. All of the Columns are set to NVARCHAR(1000) by default. I cannot change them. I want to load the DataSet into memory and change the DataType of the columns from NVARCHAR(1000) to INT(4). The data is in integer (i.e. 4,5,123) format (but stored as a string), but is coming across as strings. The charting software I am using won't implicitly convert these Strings to Int or Double. How can I change an entire column to Int?

Changing Datatype Length

Jul 20, 2005

Hi all,I need to change a varchar from 35 to 50. In the SQL Server books online it says that SQL Server actually creates a new table when youchange the length. I ran a test in a test database and it appears theonly thing that changes is the length. All the data remains in tact.The table with the column I want to modify is very critical. Is thereany chance I would loose data if I change the length to a larger size? Iam making a back up of the table just in case. Thanks,Kelly

Extract The Value Of A Datetime Datatype From A DataSet Column

Nov 4, 2006

Hello,
I'm having trouble extracting the datetime value of a datacolumn in order to compare it's value to another datetime. The error I get is "unable to cast object of type System.Data.DataColumn to type System.DateTime. I'm sure I'm just missing a step or a cast, but nothing has worked. I hope someone can help!
Here's the code:
protected void ddlRooms_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
SqlCommand cmd;
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["EventBookingConnectionString"].ConnectionString);
SqlDataAdapter da;
DataSet ds;
try
{
cmd = conn.CreateCommand();
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "SELECT Events.ID as 'Event ID', Name as 'Event Name', Rooms.Room as 'Event Room', AttendeeList as 'Attendee List', EventDate as 'Event Date' from Events INNER JOIN Rooms on Events.Room=Rooms.ID";
ds = new DataSet();
da = new SqlDataAdapter();
da.SelectCommand = cmd;
da.Fill(ds, "BookedRooms");
if (ds.Tables["BookedRooms"].Columns["Event Room"] != null)
{
foreach (DataRow row in ds.Tables[0].Rows)
{
string room = (string)row["Event Room"];
if (ddlRooms.SelectedItem.ToString() == room)
{
System.DateTime date = (System.DateTime)ds.Tables[0].Columns["Event Date"];   //HERE'S WHERE THE ERROR OCCURS
if (Calendar1.SelectedDate == date)
{
lblBookedRooms.Visible = true;
lblBookedRooms.Text = "I'm sorry, that room is booked for that day.<br />Please choose another day or a different room.";

Changing The DATATYPE Of A PUBLISHED COLUMN

Oct 27, 2003

Hi guys,

Is there any way or method to CHANGE the DATATYPE of a column in a published table being used for transactional replication (MSSQL 2000), WITHOUT DROPPING THE SUBSCRIPTION ????

Im stuck in this mess and do have the option to drop the subscription, alter the table, create the subscription and rerun the snapshot or to recreate it by Manual Synchronisation either.

Can anyone help? Has anyone been across this dilemma before and have troubleshooted the problem? If yes, help is much appreciated.

MY PROBLEM:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'MyTable' is currently being published and has subscriptions to it. The PRIMARY KEY column 'id' has an Identity property as well. 'id' is of datatype smallint, however because of bad planning, i now need to change that datatype to an integer to support a larger range WITHOUT DROPPING SUBSCRIPTIONS.
I CANT DROP THE COLUMN EITHER AS IT IS BEING THE PRIMARY KEY COLUMN.
IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY I CAN DO TO ARCHIEVE MY GOAL? THANKYOU.
Changing Datatype In A Table Used For Replication ?
Feb 28, 2002
Changing datatype in a table used for merge replication ?
I'm trying to change the data type on a column in a table that is used for a merge-replication with another (identical) DB.
I get this error:
Cannot alter the table '[Tablename]' because it is being published for replication.
I've tried to remove that specific table from the publication (Publication properties -> Articles tab) so I can change the data type and then put the table back into the publication, but I can't (probably because it's a MERGE rep.)
Any ideas ?
Update Column Without Changing Datatype?
Oct 15, 2015
I am trying to make the following update: All the columns are fine except for the 'name' column. datatype for 'name' column in the target table is varchar(30) and the datatype for 'name' in the sourcetable is varchar(40), I cannot change the datatype of the column 'name' to varchar(40) because I am told it may affect performance. what I want to do is just update the first 'name' column of the target table by the first 30 characters of the source table column 'name'
I am using the following query, is it possible to do it or are there any other ways I can update the column without changing the datatype?
MERGE INTO [S].[dbo].[AF_Copy] AS TargetTable
USING (SELECT source_code, name, addr1, city, zip FROM
[D].[D_TEST].[dbo].[SO_Copy]) AS SourceTable
ON ([TargetTable].[Code] = [SourceTable].[source_code])
Dataset Cleared After Changing View?
Hello,
maybe it's a silly question...
I've created a new report by the wizard (including a data query). In the dataset frame my dataset contains the queried items.
But when I change to data view and back to layout view in the designer frame, my dataset is cleared.
Is this a bug or normal behaviour?
SQL Server 2008 :: Optimize Memory With Varchar (max) Datatype
Apr 9, 2015
I am building a table change log that will track each attribute update and include the original and new values.
[BatchYearMonthKey] [int] NULL,
[BatchYearMonthDayKey] [int] NULL,
[AccountID] [varchar](200) NULL,
[Attribute] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[Old_ValueAtrDefault] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[New_ValueAtrDefault] [varchar] (200) NULL,
[Old_ValueAtrLong] [varchar] (max) NULL,
[New_ValueAtrLong] [varchar] (max) NULL
The challenge that the spectrum of varchar lengths across the table. I have one attribute that requires varchar(max) and all other attributes (about 40) are varchar (200).
I am trying to accomplish the following:
Account ID Status
1 Enabled
Now changed to
AccountID Status
1 Disabled
My log table will look like the following:
[BatchYearMonthKey] BatchYearMonthDayKey] [AccountID] [Attribute] [Old_ValueAtrDefault] [New_ValueAtrDefault] [Old_ValueAtrLong] [New_ValueAtrLong]
201504 20150409 1 Status Enabled Disabled NULL NULL
My question:
I created two fields (Old_ValueAtrLong and New_ValueAtrLong) dedicated for the one attribute that is a varchar (max). I was trying to avoid storing [Status] for example that's a varchar(200) in a field that is varchar(max). Is this the right approach? Or are there other recommendations in how to handle storing the data in the most efficient manner?
Asp.net Worker Process Runs Out Of Memory When Using A Large Dataset
Feb 27, 2006
Hi,
I'm running an application on a server which grabs data from a database table on another server using SqlConnection, SqlDataAdapter and DataSet.
The application then updates every row in that DataSet's DataTable and the updates are saved back using DataAdapter. The code is pretty much straightforward code that you would find on MSDN documentation for using DataSets. The table contains a little over a million rows.
When I run the application, I get an error saying the Server Application is not available. Upon looking into the application event log, I get this message.
aspnet_wp.exe was recycled because memory consumption exceeded the 306 MB (60 percent of available RAM)
How do I get round this? I thought DataSets were supposed to handle large datatables comfortably without having memory issues.
-Thanks
Casting An In-memory Resultset To A DataSet For Use In XML File Generation
Sep 13, 2006
I am trying to use the results of a query to build an XML file (this will eventually be data from a number of RDBMS's and will undergo transformations and unions prior to being saved as a package variable).
I have saved the results of my query to a result set variable (ADOResultSet) using the Recordset Destination.
I then try to use a script task to read the variable and create an XML file. I get a runtime error Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to class type 'System.Data.DataSet'.
Public Sub Main()
'MsgBox(Dts.Variables("ADORecordSet").Value.ToString)
Dim mySet As DataSet
mySet = (CType(Dts.Variables("ADORecordSet").Value, DataSet))
mySet.WriteXml("C: est.xml", XmlWriteMode.WriteSchema)
Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success
End Sub
I am very unfamiliar with Visual Basic and am unsure of how to cast the COM object to a DataSet. Do I need to marshal the COM object?
Thanks
Numeric Datatype To Ssis Variable Datatype Conversion Problem
Apr 24, 2008
Good afternoon,
I have an issue with an ssis variable datatype.
The scenario is as follows:
I have a stored procedure:
PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_newTransaction]
@sourceSystem varchar(50),
@txOut NUMERIC(18,0) OUTPUT
AS
insert into scn_transaction (sourceSystemName) values(@sourceSystem);
SELECT @txOut = @@identity
Whose purpose is to perform an insert into a table and return me the identity value of the inserted record, which I'll then use throughout the rest of my package. The identity column in the inserted table is numeric(18,0).
I execute the stored proc with the following sql with an OLE DB connection manager:
exec sp_newTransaction ?, ?
The first parameter is a string variable from earlier in the package, and the second is the output parameter. I have the following parameter mappings to the execute sql task:
User:ystxId output numeric 1 -1
User:ourceSys input varchar 0 -1
The proc is correctly called, and the row insesrted, however I get a type conversion error when SSIS attempts to map the return parameter to my package variable... I've tried all sorts of combonations, and can't seem to get it to execute.
At one point I wasn't returning a numeric, but rather an int from the stored proc, and all was well until I went to use the variable in a derived column later in the package, and the type was converted quite incorrectly (a 1 was 77799789080 or some such), indicating a type conversion error likely related to the encoding of the number.
I'd like to keep the datatypes as numeric and make ssis use those - any pointers are greatly appreciated as to what type my package variable should be to allow proper assignment of a sql server numeric type to it.
Thanks much,
B
SQL Server 2008 :: Populate One Dataset In SSRS Based On Results From Another Dataset Within Same Project?
Dataset1 pulls property id's and other sales data from a table (2014_COST) based on the user's parameters. I have set up another table (AUDITS) that I would like to use in dataset6. This table has 3 columns (Property ID's, Sales Price and Sales Date). I would like for dataset6 to pull the Property ID's that are NOT contained in the results from dataset1. In other words, I'd like the results of dataset6 to show me the property id's that are contained in the AUDITS table but which are not being pulled into dataset1. Integration Services :: Perform Lookup On Large Dataset Based On A Small Dataset
Oct 1, 2015
I have a small number of rows in a dataset, Table 1.  There is a CLOB on a large dataset, Table 2.  They join on a PK.  I would like to retrieve this CLOB and add it to the data flow for Table1.  In short I want to emulate the following:
Table 1:  Small table without CLOB, 10 rows.
Table 2: Large table with CLOB, 10,000,000 rows
select CLOB
from table2
where pk = (select pk from table1)
I want this to return the CLOBs for the small number of rows in Table 1.  The PK is indexed obviously so it should be a fast look up.
Table 1 and Table 2 live on different Oracle databases.  How do I perform this operation efficiently in SSIS?  It seems the Lookup and Merge Join wont do this.
Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?
