Changing The Log Initial Size

Jan 27, 2007

Folks:

Is there a way to decrease the initial size of a database/log file? I've noticed you can increase it, but if you decrease it, after you confirm the change and go checking again, you will see nothing happened.

Is there a way? Am I missing anything?!

Tempdb Initial Size

Mar 3, 2000

We had a runaway query which built the size of tempdb to 24000mb. Then someone changed the unrestricted file growth property to restricted growth while the size was 24000mb. Now I can not reduce the initial size. I have set the property back to unrestricted file growth. I have shrunk the tempdb and available space is almost 24000mb. I have stopped sqlserver. I even deleted the existing tempdb.mdf & tempdb.ldf files. But when SQL server is restarted, the initial size is set to 24000mb. It will not let me reduce the size. Is there anything short of manipulating the system tables to reduce the size back to 500mb?

Transaction Log - Initial Size Too Big

Jul 23, 2007

Hi,

Currently my db size is only 6 GB but the transaction log file initial size was set to 20 GB and has grown much way beyond the db size with the autogrowth feature turn on. The database was originally a test/development DB and was migrated to a production server including the log file. This probably caused the accumulation of transactions on the log.

We run backup everyday and tried to shrinkfile and file size did not change.

Can I change the "initial size" setting of the transaction log without causing any problems? Do I need to stop the service before I made the change assuming I made the change after the backup run? Or can I change it on the fly?

Thanks in advance.

Newbie Question About Initial Table Size

Dec 16, 2004

Hi all,

I've worked with informix for a very long time and this is my first aproach to sql server. I have an extremely simple design for a "small" database and at this moment I'm creating the tables, in informix I can assign a first extent and next extent size to the creation of the table so if your volume and growth analisys is good you can basically be sure that you will allways have contigous space on disk for your table. I'm readin BOL to see if I have that feature here but can't seem to find anything similar. Does that mean that my table data will be "fragmented" all over the primary and secondary files every time I load into them? Would it be a good practice to simulate the extents by creating a secondary file for each table with the size I require?

Any coments will be greatly appreciated :)

How To Change Initial Log File Size On Mirrored Database

Oct 23, 2015

I have a database I need to copy from a Prod server to a Dev server. There is not enough space on the Dev server. In looking at the size of the files on the Prod server, the Initial Size property for the transaction log on the Prod server is set to 100,000 MB though the log is using nowhere near that.

This is a mirrored database so the recovery model is "full". I know that to change the initial log size, I have to put the database in 'simple" recovery model. Is this possible? Can I just:

1. Pause the mirror
2. Switch recovery model to simple
3. Change the initial size property to something smaller.
4. Shrink the transaction log
5. Change the recovery model back to full and resume the mirror?

I honestly don't know if the transaction log is needed on the Dev server. Meaning I may just be able to restore the transaction log to a different location on the server and delete it so that  new one is created.

Changing 'initial Catalog' On Connection Causes Analysis Services Processing Task To Fail

May 2, 2008

We find that if we deploy the OLAP database with a different name on the test server, then regardless of how we change the connection string provided to the SSIS package that processes the cube, then the package fails to connect to the database. To clarify:

In development the OLAP database is called MyOlapDB and the source database is called MySqlDB. Both are on the same machine. When the the application is built and released for test, the test team install the databases on a replica of the production environment (i.e. web app on one machine, OLAP DB on another and SQL database on yet another). They also, quite rightly, implement the new test databases so they incorporate the build version number. So, MyOlapDB123 and MySqlDB123 are both from build 123.

This is when the problems start. Regardless of how the connection string is specified in the job that processes the cube, the SSIS integration package fails with the error:

[Analysis Services Execute DDL Task] Error: Errors in the metadata manager. Either the database with the ID of 'MyOlapDB' does not exist in the server with the ID of 'OurTestServer', or the user does not have permissions to access the object.

We have tried config files and job properties, but neither work. Also, simply attempting to run the package using the DTEXECUI does not work either.

Looking inside the XML of the package, we clearly see the ConnectionManager object which has the original connection string, which is

Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=MyOlapDB;Provider=MSOLAP.3;Integrated Security=SSPI;Impersonation Level=Impersonate;

However, editing the initial catalog here still does not solve the problem. Searching the XML for the string MyOlapDB reveals the OLAP database name in two other places - both within the object data of the two Analysis Services Execute DDL tasks.

Anyone know how to solve this problem without having to hack the XML of the package?

Performance - Automatic Expansion Vs Setting Large Initial Size.

Aug 25, 2004

Hi,

We currently have a fairly new SQL server 2000 db (currently about 18mb is size) as a backend to an application (Navision). Performance seems to be below what it should be.

The db is increasing quite rapidly in size, with a lot of data scheduled to be loaded onto the db and also more and more shops and users coming onto the system with alot more transactions going onto the db.

The initial setup of the db has the database File properties set to "Automatically grow file" by "30%" and has an unrestricted file growth.

The server that the db sits on is high spec and very large disk space.

Because the database will be expanding alot and thus reaching its maximum space allocation and then performing a 30% increase in size (which I guess affects performance quite a bit??) quite regularly.

Is it best to set the intitial size of the db to a alot bigger size in the first place as we have large disk space availiable and also set the % increase bigger also.

any advice on best performance would be much appreicated.

Regards,
David

Changing Table Column Size

Mar 2, 2004

I'm new to mssql.

I need to change the size of a column of a table from char(255) to char(500). I used the line:

alter table table_name alter column column_name char(500)

When I run that command, I get a message that it was sucessful. However, when I try to enter data into the changed column, the number of characters I can enter is still 255. I check the information schema for the column and the 'character_maximum_length' field is 500.

What is the problem here? Is the maximum allowable length for char 255? How can I get a column to have 500 characters?

Changing Footer Size On Last Page Only

Apr 29, 2008

Dear all,

I am having a problem with the footer in my SQL Reporting Services project. I am trying to print a disclaimer in a text box on the last page in the footer. I can get the text box in the footer just fine but as the disclaimer is quite a lengthly multi line text string the footer has to be enlarged in order to fit the whole text box in.

This causes a problem on all the other pages where even though the footer is not displayed on pages before the last page it still takes up space stopping other data from being displayed where the footer would normally be.

Is there a way for me to set the footer size to a default value all all pages except the last page? I just want to enlarge the footer to about 1.5" on the last page to print my disclaimer without effecting the other pages layout.

Many thanks in advance,

Trevor Keast

SQL 2012 :: Varchar - Changing Text Column Size

Aug 7, 2015

Impact on performance of changing Text column size.

However, many of them were regarding older releases of SQL Server.

Does the architecture in 2012, 2014 releases make this less of an issue ?

In other words, why bother going from Varchar(1000) to Varchar(50) ?

I'm just thinking maybe there is column compression automatically now.

Integration Services :: Error While Changing Field Size

Sep 10, 2015

I am loading from SQL Server 2008 to Access 2010 using SSIS. One of the columns in the table I am loading into is a Number datatype and Fieldsize is long integer. The values are being truncated, so I want to change the Fieldsize to DOUBLE.  However, when I do that I receive the error below. What should I do? I would like not to change my Windows registry.

This error can be caused by one of the following:

The maximum number of columns allowed in a table or the maximum number of locks for a single file is exceeded.

The indexed property of a field is changed from Yes (Duplicates OK) to Yes (No Duplicates) when duplicate data exists in the table.

An expression is not specified in the Expression property of a calculated field.

If the maximum number of locks per file was exceeded, you can increase the number by editing a registry entry. However, this is not a recommended option.

If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you could cause serious problems that require you to reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Make a backup of the registry. Find the MaxLocksPerFile registry value by using the Windows Registry Editor, and then increase the value. The MaxLocksPerFile value is saved as part of the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice14.0Access Connectivity EngineEnginesACE

If the Indexed property of a field and duplicate data is located in the table, reset the Indexed property to the previous setting, or remove duplicate records from the table.

While I was loading to the same table a few days ago, I received a warning and the task took approx 9 hours. I am attaching the screen shot.

Help With Initial Set Up

Jul 25, 2007

Hi,

I have been using a licensed copy of Visual Studio 2005 and MS SQLServer 2005 for some time but am only now trying out the Reporting Services functionality.

I have attempted to follow the instructions from url:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/usingssrswithsqlexpress.mspx

However despite confirming that the report services are running and also checking the configuration by following the information in the above web page I still get the following problems.

1. When attempting to create a project via the wizard I get the following error: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. If an attempt is made to add a new data source I am unable to choose the data source type (eg: Microsoft SQL Server). I am not given a choice for the type, in fact the relevant drop down is blank.

2. A project can be created without the wizard but if I right click the Shared Data Source folder I do not see the next Pop up to set the data source parameters.

I assume I am missing something quite fundamental - however so far I cannot see what.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Regards Andrew

Display Of Initial Catalog

May 14, 2008

Hi

I'm not a sql server savvy, so I need assistance on the following two scenarios:

A customer runs a script like this (slightly larger, but I ripped away the meat)
---------------------------------------
create database test_database
go

USE [test_database]
exec sp_changedbowner 'sa'

use master;
go
sp_grantlogin 'server01CUSTOM_ADMIN';
go

use test_database;
go

-- lots of table creations, where one of the tables are TEST_TABLE

sp_addrole 'ADMIN_ROLE';
Go
sp_grantdbaccess @loginame = 'server01CUSTOM_ADMIN', @name_in_db = 'USER_ADMIN';
go
sp_addrolemember @rolename ='ADMIN_ROLE' , @membername = 'USER_ADMIN';
Go

GRANT SELECT , UPDATE , INSERT , DELETE ON [dbo].[TEST_TABLE] TO [ADMIN_ROLE]
GO
---------------------------

Now, if a person is added to the server01CUSTOM_ADMIN group, he/she should be able to do the following: (let's say it's a he)

- Create a test.udl-file (win xp). Set a provider to sql server.
- On the connection-tab enter hostname of database server in the Data Source-field and use windows NT Integrated security.
- When he now test the connection, it should work, since he has access to the database.
- Also, using the dropdown "3. Enter the initial catalog to use:", he should see SOME datatables. Not ALL, not none. The ones that he has access to.

So, if TEST_DATABASE is the only access that server01CUSTOM_ADMIN has, that database and only that one should show, right?

In my customers scenario, some databases show (irrelevant ones), but not TEST_DATABASE. In my test, I still get ALL databases. Even after I rip the guy out of the Administrators-group and Users-group. He's only a member of the CUSTOM_ADMIN-group on server01. "Test connection" succeeds, and all the databases on the server shows.

What I hope for is following questions like "He's probably sysadmin, check it" etc, so that I can systematically (using your brains) filter out the reasons for these scenarios to happen.

Thanks in advance.
