Check If Linked Server Is Running
Dec 30, 2002
I have a stored procedure that references another stored procedure on a linked server. I would like to check if the linked server is running prior to accessing the stored procedure. Everything I have tried returns either message 11 or 17 and terminates the stored procedure. I would like to do some cleanup before the termination. Is there any way to check this?

Hi,
I am skilled Oracle DBA and recently started to support MS SQL Server 2000
.
For all my Oracle DBs I run "Watch Dog" script that test if database ( server for MS SQL Server) is up and running and send me message on pager or by E-mail if it is down.
MY QUESTION IS:
How to do similar actions for MS SQL SERVER 2000?
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
I have my SQL server installed and running on a windows 2003 server. Sometimes, the server stops unexpectedly. I want to know if there is any mechanism to alert as and when the SQL server or SQL server agent goes down.
I guess everything is a windows service. Can we have a mechanism to test this service from a script and send an alert mail when the server goes down? How can this be done from a script?
Thanks in advance

How to check if ftp/sftp server is running before actually starting the ftp/sftp taks? I tried the script task as shown in the attached link but it does not really check for ftp connection.

I am about designing an access project file that connect to a SQL Server database : it could be either on the local computer or a remote workstation, this depending on where the front end is running.
Bypassing the default log on dialog box i have set my own form that users should use to connect on adp. Then using baseconnection string i connect the adp to sql server database.
My concern is how can i check from vba if the instance of SQL Server where my back end database is located is running in order to make
users knowing that due sql server service status off their connection
tentative will fail.
inform u i can check same from console management however i would to automate same controle from my adp and avoid that users have to operate such task...

I am trying to check if a view exists on a linked server using sys.views. I tried to fully qualify it but that produces an error telling me the below, which both the database name is correct as well as the server name. Is it possible to obtain a list of views from a linked server connection? Msg 7314, Level 16, State 1, Line 321 The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "alpha" does not contain the table ""salesdata"."sys"."views"". The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table.
SQL Server 2008 is the server I want to query from and sql server 2000 is the server I want to query even if I try to use this syntax it still produces the above said error
Code:
select
count(*)
from
alpha.salesdata.INFORMATION_SCHEMA.VIEWS
I also tried to qualify the views by using the below and still same error
Code:
select
count(*)
from
alpha.salesdata.INFORMATION_SCHEMA.VIEWS
where
table_schema = 'dbo'

I have created a linked server using an ODBC connection to an Access database. The command I used for this was:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'Testaccess',
@srvproduct = '',
@provider = 'MSDASQL',
@datasrc = 'test'
GO
where 'Testaccess' is the name of the linked server and 'test' is the name of the ODBC connection. [The ODBC connection stores the name of the Access datbase.]
I can run sp_tables_ex and view the table_schem, table_cat etc etc
BUT when I try to run a query on the linked server, I get the following message:
"7312 - Invalid use of schema and/or catalog for OLE DB provider '%ls'. A four-part name was supplied, but the provider does not expose the necessary interfaces to use a catalog and/or schema."
I am attempting/using the following command specifying the linked server name.database name.owner.table name in the FROM clause:
select a.*
from testaccess.testdb.dbo.temptable a
Any ideas what I am doing wrong??
thanks

I receive the following error message when I run a distributed query against a loopback linked server in SQL Server 2005:
The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) has cancelled the distributed transaction.
To resolve this problem, I was told that running a distributed query against a loopback linked server is not supported in SQL Server 2005. And I am suggested to use a remote server definition (sp_addserver) instead of a linked server definition to resolve this problem. (Although this is only a temporary resolution, which will deprecate in Katmai)
However, I run into another problem when I use the remote server definition. I receive the following error message:
Msg 18483, Level 14, State 1, Line 1
Could not connect to server 'ServerNameSQL2005' because '' is not defined as a remote login at the server. Verify that you have specified the correct login name.
Could anyone please help me out?

Hi,Looking for a quick and dirty on running an Access database as a linkedserver in SQL Server. Basically, the majority of my stuff is in SQLServer, but there is one lingering nightmare-of-an-Access-database noone wants to touch.I just want to create a linked server to use the Access db.So far I have not found a way to connect (under Security -LinkServers in SQL Server), though I tried all kinds of drivers, connectionstrings, etc. What do I put for Product Name, Data Source, ProviderString, (Location, Catalog)?Thanks a bunch.

Hi All,
I have a long running procedure (batch job) which will take quite some time to complete. I need to run a fixed number (configurable value) of copies simultaneously, i.e., either two copies or three copies at a time. (I don't want to use Service Broker for this purporse now)
For this I need to know whether this procedure is currenly being executed, and how many copies. Now I'm maintaing a flag in a table where this will get updated once the procedure starts and ends. This is not 100% reliable and need a manual check occasionally.
I would like to know, whether there is an easier method to find whether this procedure is being executed currently ?
Hope you are clear with my requirement.
SQL Server Version : 2005
Thanks in advance.

Hi.
While hardening a ms-sql2000 , I faced with a problem and I`m completely lost !
few days of reading and google searchs didn't gave me any hint...
Here's the scenario :
Ms-sql is connected to Oracle , through "MS OLE DB provider for Oracle" .
By default MS-SQL runs as SYSTEM , but even if we change it to a "local admin"
account , everything works fine .
The problem is that it's not wise to let sqlservice to run under privilaged accounts such
as system or a member of 'local administrators' . So I tried a normal local user on the
host running sql . I fixed every related problem appearing because of using a limited user
account and ms-sql works fine in all aspects but one !
While using normal-user account , sql-server fails to load linked-servers and this error
pops up in enterprise-manager :
"OLE/DB Provider 'MSDAORA' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005:
The provider did not give any information about the error."
I've tried much to find root of this error ( including any comments from related KB articles... ) but no luck . My guess is that , using OLE requires administrative privileges on host , and as I'm running SqlService with normal user, it fails to use OLE. So I should give requried permissions to the user running SqlService . But the problem is that I've no idea where/how I should do that. I've already tried some registry/file permissions but non of them helped me.
Some where I red that using ODBC instead of OLE may help , but that seems fail too !
*Note that I'm almost sure it`s a problem OUT of circle of ms-sql , meaning any modifications should apply OUT of ms-sql , because simply giving local administrative privileges to the user, fix the problem.
Any comments?
regards
Hamid.K

If I start a long running query running on a background thread is there a way to abort the query so that it does not continue running on SQL server?
The query would be running on SQL Server 2005 from a Windows form application using the Background worker component. So the query would have been started from the background workers DoWork event using ado.net. If the user clicks an abort button in the UI I would want the query to die so that it does not continue to use sql server resources.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks
