Checkbox Data-bound To A Bit SQL Field Can't Handle NULL Values

Jun 18, 2004

I have a checkbox on my webform that is bound to a bit field in my SQL table. I'm fine as long as I've got the bit field set to 0 or 1, but if the field is NULL, the checkbox throws an exception during the databind.

Is there any way to handle this without removing the data binding and manually setting the value (ie: some way to intercept it before the exception gets thrown and then setting the field value in the dataset)?

Thanks!

How To Not Auto Generate A Report, How To Use A Null Checkbox On A Param With Available Values, How To Add Back/forward Buttons?

Apr 3, 2008

Hey all,

1) I have a report with many parameters that I want users to be able to pick from. Allow them to pick 1, many or all to build their report dynamically. I'm all set on the TSQL side, but on the Reporting Services side I have to allow each parameter to be null with a default of NULL. In by doing this, the report will auto run, which I do not want to happen. The only resolution I've found thus far was by adding a parameter that does nothing, with a NULL default value. Yet It sticks out like a sore thumb on the report and I want to get rid of it. If I check in "Hidden" in the parameter options, my report errors out stating that the parameter requires a value.

2) Is it possible to have a parameter that has available values from a dataset have a NULL checkbox like those of parameters that do not have available values?

3) Is it possible to add back/forward buttons inside of a report instead of just at the report header by default?

Thanks!

Handle Null Date Values

Feb 19, 2008

Hi,
In my Excel file, The Application date column contains empty for some rows. In SSIS I am using one Data Conversion to that Application Date column to change it as Date[dt_Date]. This data conversion is giving error Conversion failed. In Sqlserver table, I declare ApplicationDate column datatype as DateTime.
I want to keep those empty date values as Null in Sqlserver.
I tried the IMEX=1 property still it is not working. How to solve this error?

Thanks in advance.

I am curious as to what others are doing to handle this?

Show 0 Values If The Field Is NULL

Apr 22, 2008

Hi All,

I want to show 0, if the field contains NULL values.
I use the following expression.

=IIf(Fields!MTD_TotGrossBKCOAmt.Value = "NULL" , SUM(Fields!MTD_TotGrossBKCOAmt.Value), 0 )

But this works if the field contains only NULL values.
If it has a value, then it shows as #Error

Can anyone tell me how to make this work?

Thanks

How To Insert Null Values Into A DataBase Field

May 9, 2005

I have a function that updates a table in sql server
If a field is left blank I want the database field set to Null. I use:sqlCmd.Parameter.Add("@somefield, someintvalue) to pass all my values to the database.
if someintvalue is null I want to set @somefield to dbnull
How can I do this? I get errors if I submit a null integer when there is a foreign key constraint. What is the best way to handle this? should I just make all parameters objects? so that I can set them to DBNull.Value?
Also on a side note, when you are populating fields from a datatable, is there a better way to set the values (i.e. of a textbox) than cheking for DBNull before assigning?

Won't Select Rows With Null Field Values

Aug 29, 2006

I cannot in the life of me understand what goes wrong here... In a webapplication (C#.NET) I traced an inability to retrieve existing records to SQL Server, where I cannot do the same either. The problem is that in the parameterized query, some fields can be null, and thus when the corresponding fields in the database record are null also, they should be selected. But this won't happen for some reason.

I wrote a test SQL statement that gives me the same bogus:

DECLARE @institution int, @collection int, @serialnr int, @subnr nvarchar(50)SET @institution = 1 SET @collection = 1SET @serialnr = 240 SET @subnr = NULLSELECT ID, Institution, Collection, SerialNumber, SubNumber, AccessionYear, Sagsnummer, DanekraeNr, TaxonIdentified, Stratigraphy, TypeStatus, PlacementRoom, PlacementCabinet, PlacementDrawer, UnitNotesFROM SpecimensWHERE (Institution = @institution) AND (Collection = @collection) AND (SerialNumber = @serialnr) AND (SubNumber = @subnr)
Now there is at least one row with corresponding fields values (1, 1, 240, null), but it won't be selected! What is wrong!?

SELECT * FROM ADMIN WHERE date_edited = NULL

I get no records, but i can see and know i have hundreds! I know i'm doing somthing really stupid, but for life of me can't figure it out! :eek:

NULL Values Returned When Reading Values From A Text File Using Data Reader.

Feb 23, 2007

I have a DTSX package which reads values from a fixed-length text file using a data reader and writes some of the column values from the file to an Oracle table. We have used this DTSX several times without incident but recently the process started inserting NULL values for some of the columns when there was a valid value in the source file. If we extract some of the rows from the source file into a smaller file (i.e 10 rows which incorrectly returned NULLs) and run them through the same package they write the correct values to the table, but running the complete file again results in the NULL values error. As well, if we rerun the same file multiple times the incidence of NULL values varies slightly and does not always seem to impact the same rows. I tried outputting data to a log file to see if I can determine what happens and no error messages are returned but it seems to be the case that the NULL values occur after pulling in the data via a Data Reader. Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and get some additional debugging information around this error?

NULL Values To Sequential Number (The Field Is Nvarchar Datatype)

Jun 16, 2012

Ok I have upgraded my works database from a poorly designed Access database to a SQL database. The previous system allowed NULL values and duplicates to be inserted into a field that should NOT ALLOW NULL Values or duplicates. Therefore, this issue has now been moved across to my new system as I cannot set these constraints on the field that has multiple NULL values.

My solution would be to use a sequential operator, so whatever = NULL would be changed to a sequential number that us as administrators would know was a bogus number starting at something like = 999999900 counting up from that. There are only 250 records that would require updating.

To make things more interesting this field is not a integer type, its a Nvarchar type as its a Hardware ID. Both numerical and characters are require.

Compressing Multiple Rows With Null Values To One Row With Out Null Values After A Pivot Transform

Jan 25, 2008

I have a pivot transform that pivots a batch type. After the pivot, each batch type has its own row with null values for the other batch types that were pivoted. I want to group two fields and max() the remaining batch types so that the multiple rows are displayed on one row. I tried using the aggregate transform, but since the batch type field is a string, the max() function fails in the package. Is there another transform or can I use the aggragate transform another way so that the max() will work on a string?

Inserting A Checkbox Value Into Bit Field Sql Server 2000

Dec 17, 2004

Edited by SomeNewKid. Please post code between <code> and </code> tags.

This is probaly the easiest question you've ever read but here goes.

I have a simple checkbox value that i want to insert into the database but whatever i do it does not seem to let me.

Here is my code:

Sub AddSection_Click(Sender As Object, e As EventArgs)
Dim myCommand As SqlCommand
Dim insertCmd As String
' Build a SQL INSERT statement string for all the input-form
' field values.
insertCmd = "insert into Customers values (@SectionName, @SectionLink, @Title, @NewWindow, @LatestNews, @Partners, @Support);"
' Initialize the SqlCommand with the new SQL string.
myCommand = New SqlCommand(insertCmd, myConnection)
' Create new parameters for the SqlCommand object and
' initialize them to the input-form field values.
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@SectionName", SqlDbType.nVarChar, 50))
myCommand.Parameters("@SectionName").Value = Section_name.Value

myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@SectionLink", SqlDbType.nVarChar, 80))
myCommand.Parameters("@SectionLink").Value = Section_link.Value

myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Title", SqlDbType.nVarChar, 50))
myCommand.Parameters("@Title").Value = Section_title.Value

If New_window.Checked = false Then
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@NewWindow", SqlDbType.bit, 1))
myCommand.Parameters("@NewWindow").Value = 0
else
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@NewWindow", SqlDbType.bit, 1))
myCommand.Parameters("@NewWindow").Value = 1
End If

If Latest_news.Checked = false Then
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@LatestNews", SqlDbType.bit, 1))
myCommand.Parameters("@LatestNews").Value = 0
else
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@LatestNews", SqlDbType.bit, 1))
myCommand.Parameters("@LatestNews").Value = 1
End If

If Partners.Checked = false Then
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Partners", SqlDbType.bit, 1))
myCommand.Parameters("@Partners").Value = 0
else
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Partners", SqlDbType.bit, 1))
myCommand.Parameters("@Partners").Value = 1
End If

If Support.Checked = false Then
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Support", SqlDbType.bit, 1))
myCommand.Parameters("@Support").Value = 0
else
myCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Support", SqlDbType.bit, 1))
myCommand.Parameters("@Support").Value = 1
End If

myCommand.Connection.Open()
' Test whether the new row can be added and display the
' appropriate message box to the user.
Try
myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
Message.InnerHtml = "Record Added<br>" & insertCmd
Catch ex As SqlException
If ex.Number = 2627 Then
Message.InnerHtml = "ERROR: A record already exists with " _
& "the same primary key"
Else
Message.InnerHtml = "ERROR: Could not add record, please " _
& "ensure the fields are correctly filled out"
Message.Style("color") = "red"
End If
End Try

myCommand.Connection.Close()
BindGrid()
End Sub

Any response would be appreciated

Multiple Checkbox Field Width In A Report Parameter.

Hello,

I have a report where I'm showing a list of users to select.
When previewing the report, the width of the field is automatically set to the largest label in the dropdown list.
But when I change the parameter to have "Multi-Values", then the width is set to a fixed value and a horizontal scrollbar appears.
Does anyone know how to have a "Multi-Values" parameter, but keeping the lasgest width of the labels in the dropdown list ?

Thanks in advance

Null How To Handle

[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query " UPDATE Property SET
ImageList = U.ImageList FROM Property
M INNER JOIN RETS.dbo._Updates U ON M.ListingID = U.ListingID
AND M.FeedID = U.FeedID WHERE M.FeedID = ?" failed with
the following error: "The multi-part identifier "M.FeedID" could
not be bound.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query,
"ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly,
or connection not established correctly.

ByPassPrepare is set to TRUE and ParameterName = 0 to variable User::Feed_ID

HOWEVER - following query executes fine:

UPDATE Property SET

ImageList = U.ImageList

FROM Property M

INNER JOIN RETS.dbo._Updates U ON M.ListingID = U.ListingID AND M.FeedID
= U.FeedID

WHERE M.FeedID = 11

Beats me - any help with explaining this to me
please?

Handle Null Value For DropDownList?

Nov 11, 2006

Using asp.net 2.0 and visual studio 2005. The question is regarding the following ER diagram: I've made Firstname, lastname, buildingID and RoomNum all required fields. I've got a modified GridView that displays all of the table Faculty columns.  It's been modified so the BuildingID and DepID are resolved to their actual field names and displayed in a DropDownList.  In the dropdown list I used for inserting (a seperate DetailsView control), I manually inserted an item into the Department dropdownlist which had the text "-- Select a Department --" with a value of -1.  MS SQL didn't like that -1 value so I wrote the following code to fix it:  protected void dsFaculty_Inserting(object sender, SqlDataSourceCommandEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Command.Parameters["@DeptID"].Value.ToString() == "-1")
{
e.Command.Parameters["@DeptID"].Value = null;
}
} That means of course DeptID is null, which is ok.  The problem arises is when I try to edit that row in the GridView.  I get the an error 'ddlDepartment' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.Parameter name: valueIdeally, I'd like to make the dropdown list in the GridView show "-- None --" for the DeptID if it comes across a null value.  I already tried playing around with the Command.Parameters in the dsFaculty_Selected function, but it didn't work.  Ideas?

How To Handle NULL Dates In Formulas?

Mar 19, 2008

Re: SQL Server Reporting Services

I have welders who have active dates and inactive dates, and I need to create an "isactive" column in the report. My formula will be pretty obvious to most of you. However, if the user does not input an inactive date, that means none has been given and therefore the welder is currently active. The problem is that there seems to be no way to check if inactive date is null or not in the formula.

Please help! Thanks!

- Using Inner Join When The Field In My Data Table Has The Null Default Value:

Jul 16, 2006

I have a datatable : Data_Table  and a look up table: Lk_table. Myfield that I
use in Inner Join  is defined in both the
data and look table.

So I build my query like this:

SELECT     * FROM         dbo. Data_Table  INNER JOIN

dbo. Lk_table ON dbo.Data_Table.MyField = dbo.Lk_table.Myfield

The pb, sometimes  I
have myfield still with its default null value in the datatable: Data_Table.
So, I end up getting 0 record when I execute the query shown above.

How do I turn that around so that even if myfield in Data_Table
is Null, I still get the records from Data_Table. (I don t want a set of
records including all possible values from the look up table: Lk_Table)

Null Values When Extracting Data From An Excel File

Oct 18, 2006

Hello,

I'm trying to import some data from a spreadsheet to a database table from a package in integration services. The problem is that I see the data when I open the excel file but when I try to run my package , it doesn't insert any rows in the table and it finishes with a success status.

My excel file has some formulas to get the data from other worksheets. I added a Data Viewer and all I see is null values in every cell.

I need help...does anyone know what's wrong?
