Cleaning Up Data Files When Removing Instance (integr. Inst.)
Jun 13, 2007
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to integrate SQLEXPRESS in a custom application ("the app"). On installation, a new instance ("myNewInstance") is created, and a new DB ("myDB") is created on that instance.
Upon de-installation of "the app", I remove the new instance. To that end, I'm calling the SQLEXPRESS setup like this:
Code Snippet
setup.exe /qb REMOVE=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=myNewInstance
The Problem: While the service and the instance are removed, the instance's data directory is not, and the DB Datafiles are still there. Now if I reinstall the app (re-creating myNewInstance), it uses the same directory structure, and when I try to re-create the DB, I get the following error message:
Code Snippet
Msg 5170, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot create file '[...]MSSQL.2MSSQLDATAmyDB.mdf' because it already exists. Change the file path or the file name, and retry the operation.
So here's the Question: is there
a) any way to tell setup.exe to completely remove the datafiles when uninstalling the instance, or
b) any way to tell TSQL to overwrite the old datafiles if they exist?
I have been researching on how to cleanup four backup system files located in the MSDB database. I currently have approximately 1 million rows in each of these tables which is making my MSDB database to be 4 gig in size. I cannot find any instructions on how to gracefully clean these tables up or what to do to keep the number of rows down in these tables. The tables are backupfile, backupmediafamily, backupmediaset, and backupset. Thanks.
i am building a new deployment routine for one of our products using NANT (.net version of ANT). I takes all of .sql files out of vault for all non table objects and concatenates them into larger .sql files with IF EXISTS .... DROP ... GO CREATE statements which will then be fired off by osql batch files that will log the errors.
Problem...
When I open the resulting files in notepad I have junk characters (microsoft OEM stuff) in some of my object definitions which you do not see in the QA or if you opnen the file in Vault. I need to get this stuff out of there and I do not want to write a bunch of filesystem code to do it because I need this tested and ready by Friday COB. I know I can solve this by opening the problematic files in ultraedit and saving them one by one but I do have that kind of time.
We want to rename our instance and I understand there isn't a straightforward way to do so. I'm prepared to run SQLEXPR again to create the new named instance. However, I'm not clear on how to remove the other named instance once the data files have been moved over. I do not want the old service "SQL Server (<old_named_instance>)" to be running. I would also like the files "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1" removed along with the registry entries for this instance.
I tried running SQLEXPR with a /? option but that invoked the installer and did not give me the command line options. Is there a simple way to remove a specific named instance? Thanks.
When uninstalling an instance, is there a parameter on the uninstall (setup.exe /qb REMOVE=ALL INSTANCENAME=XXXXXXXX), to remove all the databases associated with that instance?
I have to install SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 on a server to do a Share Point upgrade. After the upgrade I want to remove the SQL 2000 instance.
My question is, has anyone done this and what, if any, issues did you have. Does it matter what order they are installed in? Will I break my 2005 instance when I remove the 2000 instance?
Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!
Hey gang, I have 2 100,000 record tables, with a ID & address field. (I've exclude all the other field for now) I need to make sure the ID field in table A is equal to table B and that the address in table A is equal to table B. If the Id's or address do not match create a separate table. Any good ideas
I am installing SQL 2005 Express on several laptops (IBM Thinkpads and Dell latitudes) and I've noticed that doing the exact came configuration options with the exact same file, the IBM thinkpads just take the Machine name for SQL Server, while the Dells take MachinenameSQLEXPRESS. I am wondering how I can get it to just take the machine name on the Dells.
What tools has everyone used for cleaning name and address data(including identifying not-immediately-obvious duplicates) inconnection with a CRM project or the Customer dimension of a datawarehouse? What did you like/dislike about the tool you used? Howcustomizable was the tool you used?
All I am in trying to clean and standardize the data during the ETL processes using the €œLookup Data Flow Transformation€? in SSIS€¦ I am able to clean data by replacing the values in columns with values from a reference table, using an exact lookup to locate values in a reference table. What I would like to do is €œif there is NO exact match€? replace it by e.g. zero or some other value which means €œno reference data available€?, how do I do this? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Manojkumar
I just finish installing the MS Sql 6.5 server, when I look into the master database, it only contains one table (i.e. helpsqal(dbo)), did my installation was suscessful, I think I suppos to more tables like sysdatabase, sysobject, etc ...
When I get this message "The merge process is cleaning up meta data in database 'xDatabase'." at distributor MS SQL 2005 replicator monitor on one of his suscription, this proccess generate so proccess charge to the suscriber that users note difference in performance. I wonder if exist a way to change some kind of parameter for this proccess run on specific schedule ?
Any help would be appreciated.
other info I had suscribers that only replicate in one way, maybe this metadata is causing this overcharge.
There are 3 log files attached to a SQL Database . I would like to remove one of them as it was created by Previous DBA for temp use (Don'r ask me why?) If I run DBCC ShrinkFile with EMPTYFILE , would it let me drop that file or is there any command to do it? OR is it not possible at all
When you create a dump device, then add backups with the NOINIT arg, the space taken up on the device grows, is there a way of removing individual backups from the device without (i guess) purging the whole lot by running WITH INIT? I can get a list of the files by running the RESTORE WITH HEADERONLY, but I can't see how to remove individual ones.
I cannot install SQL SErver 2005 because of files still on my hard disk from beta version. These include sqlmgmprovider.dll and svrenumapi.dll. The uninstall program is no longer available. How do I get rid of whatever remains of the old beta installation so that the released version of SQL Server 2005 will install?
I am new to SQL Server. I want to know what is data scrubbing (data cleaning). What are the different tools that can be used for data scrubbing. Where can i find good tutorial or data for data scrubbing?
I'm converting DBs from SQL7 to SQL2K; the previous owner & server issues had created secondary data and/or log files. The size of the databases, and the configuration of the new server, do not warrant those secondary files. In restoring the databases from SQL7 to SQL2K, either by detach/copy/attach or backup/restore, is there a method for deleting the secondary files without, of course, losing any data?!
I was trying an edition upgrade from SQL 2005 standard x64 to SQL 2005 enterprise x64 using the "setup SKUUPGRADE=1" from the command line. The SO is W2003 server R2 enterprise and I have a SQL clustered environment with 2 nodes (active/passive).
I select to upgrade the SQL module and I mark the checkbox for the cluster installation. The installation seems to work properly untill setup is doing the task "removing backup files". Then 2 "unexpected error" message appears as follows. The 2 above windows appear when you click on the help icon.

The following is the end of the SQL setup log file:
For the past several weeks, I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 on a Win XP SP2 PC. Regardless of the options I choose (SQL Engine + Client Tools, Client Tools only, etc.) when the installation gets to the end of the Client Tools setup and the setup status displays "Removing Backup Files", my PC appears to hang.
For a period of time, there is a fair amount of HD activity which gives me the impression that files are in fact being deleted, but then there is no HD activity and the installation appears to hang. Finally I give up and kill the setup process and reboot.
After reboot, it appears that the client tools have been installed (the icons appear and I can open the Management Studio, but when I try to connect to an existing instance of SQL, that hangs. This occurs for either Windows or SQL authentication.
Has anyone experienced this behavior and determined the root cause? What EXACTLY is happening during the "Removing Backup Files" phase of the installation?
I have a virtual machine that previously had SQL Server 2005 installed. Since I changed the computer name, I have to reinstall SQL. I removed all the SQL components and am trying to reinstall the database and reporting components. The installation is failing on the "Removing temporary files" step. According to the setup progress screen, the following components have been installed:
OWC11
SQL Server Bakcward-Compatibility Files
SQL Server Database Services
Reporting Services
Visual Studio Integrated Development
SQL Server Books Online
SQLXML4
Workstation Components, Books Online - this step is still in "configuring components" status.
The virtual machine is running Windows 2003 Server SP1 with all current patches, using just under 2 GB of memory (1920 MB of RAM), the host is Windows XP SP2 with all current patches, with 4 GB of memory.
I had no problem doing this procedure on a different virtual machine, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.
after moving the resource database files with this command:
ALTER DATABASE mssqlsystemresource MODIFY FILE (NAME=data, FILENAME= 'new_path_of_mastermssqlsystemresource.mdf'); GO ALTER DATABASE mssqlsystemresource MODIFY FILE (NAME=log, FILENAME= 'new_path_of_mastermssqlsystemresource.ldf'); GO
I am getting this error trying to do anything in the instance while I have it started in minimal mode (/f /t3608)
(the instance WILL NOT COME UP UNLESS I USE THE /F /T3608 from a command promt.. please .. any suggestions?????????????????????? Also.. I checked and the primary file is NOT READ-ONLY.

I have just installed SQL Server 2005. I was not given a choice during installation (that I remember seeing anyway) about which drive I wanted to place the default SQL instance on.
It ended up on C: and I needed it on D:.
So my questions are:
Is there a way to move it to D: that is easier than the way you had to go about it in SQL 2000? Is there a way to do it during setup so I can avoid this in the future?
I have a table that I need to delete some data from and put the deleteddata into a different table. How do I script the following. If Field1 in Table1 is null, remove that row from Table1 and put it ina new table called Table2Regards,Ciarán
I proposed on a new server that we separate Data Files, Log Files, tempDB, Backups, etc. onto separate LUNS on a SAN with High Speed Solid State Drives.I was told that with the new technology with solid state SAN's that it would decrease performance and that it did not work the same way as it did when you had RAID 5's etc.I thought that if things were cared out correctly by a SAN Administrator they would know how to configure for optimal performance.
How should I go about releasing any objects I've created? I've got a very complex CLR stored proc that creates a dataset, many sqlcommand objects, an adapter, etc, etc. It's used to evaluate high school transcripts for completion of the core subjects. It's a very complex SP that takes a single SSN as a parameter. Right now it works as expected when I call it from a query window in SQL Mgmt Studio, I can stack 39 calls in a row like:
exec usp_Evaluate_eTranscript '011...' exec usp_Evaluate_eTranscript '012...' ... exec usp_Evaluate_eTranscript '039...' And if I build a little test harness in VB.Net calling it in a populated dataset For ... Next loop, it works just fine for the 39 valid values I have. But, when I build a cursor in a query window in MgmtStudio I get some strange behavior, that just doesn't really make sense. I'm getting a foreign key violation and I'm not even trying to insert any rows, just updating existing ones. So, the only possible cause that I haven't eliminated yet is that some objects are still hanging around when the cursor tries to call the SP again. It's declared:
<Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure()> _ Public Shared Sub usp_Evaluate_eTranscript(ByVal SSN As String) And exits with the standard End Sub. Is there some way I can help the garbage collector along? Kick it into action? Maybe some
Set sqlcommand = Nothing or sqlcommand.Dispose dataset.Clear or dataset.Dispose or somesuch thing? I'm closing the context connection immediately after each time I use it (I have to so the next object can work).
I want to load this data into SQL Server tables so that the data will be imported without the trailing spaces(blanks) after each data element . Thus I will like to trim the data of the extra spaces (blanks) before import.
I am running a query on multiple tables and the data I get back consists of several repeated rows but with one column different. I want to take out those repeated rows and for the column that is different join that data and separate it by a comma. Can this be done?
Ex. Cindy Lair 111 Drury Circle Harrisburg Pennsylvania 717 Cindy Lair 111 Drury Circle Harrisburg Pennsylvania 610 Cindy Lair 111 Drury Circle Harrisburg Pennsylvania 310
So i would like this data to come up as: Cindy Lair 111 Drury Circle Harrisburg Pennsylvania 717,610,310
Seems obvious but I can't see how. How would I remove columns from a data flow so that columns which have been used earlier but are not needed for insert/update are taken out of the flow.
I'm asking because the data ends up in a update statement and the flow has got so big it is unreadable.
I was wondering if someone could tell me how to use an SQL Function to remove everything from the mess of characters below except 'Test.' Really, any message could be substituted, so it's not as easy to leave everything except the 'Test.' string.
{ tf1ansiansicpg1252deff0deflang1033{fonttbl{f0fnilfcharset0 MS Shell Dlg 2;}{f1fnil MS Shell Dlg 2;}} {colortbl ; ed0green0lue0;} {*generator Msftedit 5.41.15.1507;}viewkind4uc1pard x720cf1f0fs20 Test.f1par }
It's RichText.
The fs20 could be fs24, fs25, etc. (any numbers). The end of the number would be the point to trim the beginning off.
The '' seems like it would be the point to start trimming the end off.
I've been experimenting with SUBSTRING together with CHARINDEX, but am just not getting even close to coming up with a solution.
