Hi
We are planning to upgrade the SQL Server in our production environment from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. This is a 4 Node cluster environment with 3 Databases on 3 Virtual instances. The main requirement is to achieve this with no/minimal downtime.
Could you please suggest or direct me to any documentation for the best practices used to upgrade such an environment?
Thanks
Priyanka
I´ve been reading that SQL Server 2012 Always On is dependent on having a Windows Failover Cluster setup. Is that correct ?

We're upgrading a SQL Server 2000 cluster (Active/Passive) running on Windows 2000 Server to a SQL Server 2005 Cluster running on Windows Server 2003. We can't purchase new hardware and we have no spare hardware. We also need to move from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server at the same time. We want to keep downtime to a bare minimum.
What we were thinking was the following steps... Anyone try this?
1. Break the link between the servers.
2. Install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on one side along with SQL Server 2005. While this step is running, the active node would still be live on Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 serving our customers.
3. Restore a copy of a backup from the active production side to the node we're upgrading and at that point we would bring the active node down, switching the active node to be the newly upgraded server.
4. As a final step, the old active node would now have the link to it broken, we would install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on it and sql server 2005. At this point we would bring it back into the cluster and the cluster would be complete again.
Thoughts?
Friends -
Need your help and guidence for doing upgrading SQL Server 2000 Cluster to SQL Server 2005 Cluster.
Let me explain my current environment.
1. Currently SQL Server 2000 Cluster environment is running on Windows 2000 Server we need to upgrade this to SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2003 Server. >>> Production environment.
My Plans:
1. On Testing Environment Install SQL Server 2000 cluster on Windows 2003 Server and do a restore of databases from the produciton environment.
2. Upgrade In-Place from SQL Server 2000 Cluster to SQL Server 2005 Cluster.
My doubts
1. Can i install SQL Server 2000 Cluster on Windows 2003 Server. Is it possible or not.
Please advise me and correct my steps.
Cheers

During the installation of Adding node to a SQL Server failover cluster(On passive node) getting error like.. The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start. We  run the below commands but didn’t get any resolution & got the same above error .
Â
1st Method…
1. Open console command (Run->CMD with administrator privileges).Â
2. net stop winmgmtÂ
3. Rename folder %windir%System32WbemRepository to other one, for backup purposes (for example _Repository).Â
4. net start winmgmt
2ndÂ Method..
1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
a) Command : - sc config winmgmt start= disabled
b. Command : - Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â net stop winmgmt
2. Run the following commands.
a). Command: Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%System32wbem
b). Command: Â Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%System32wbem
3. Re-enable the WMI service
Command:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â sc config winmgmt start= autoÂ
Last command to run after above steps
4. Command:Â Â Â Â mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft SQL Server100Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"
File not found Error for above command.
I am in the process of moving databases from a SQL 2005 Standard version to a 2-node 2014 cluster. All of my 2005 databases back up successfully. They all restore without issue except for one database that has a full text catalog. I get this message

Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2

I went as far as giving the folder full access to everyone temporarily and received the same error.
I ran the Advanced cluster preparation for a new sql instance on an existing cluster.
Slq Server 2012.
After is completed, it was successful, I realized I specified the wrong Instance Root directory.
Is it possible to remove what the preparation installed? Or is it possible to change the root directory?
Can I build a cluster by adding the cluster service, then the SQL instances, then add the other nodes and their passive SQL instances?I would lean to building the cluster first, the add the SQL instances.

is there anyway i can drop the existing primary keys and using their original script then create again as clustered including restoring all foreign and reference keys and unique or no unique.

can we join a node in a windows cluster which is already in a different cluster?
We have this requirement as we need to setup readable secondary ( always on AG) on the third node.
We are planning to change all IPs of PRODUCTION Failover Cluster Setup. In my cluster setup ... we have 2 Physical Nodes with windows-2008, Roles are MSDTC and SQL-2008R2.
IP change for:
1. Both Nodes(Physical)
2. MSDTC
3. SQL ServerÂ
4. windows ClusterÂ
So Almost... All IPs are going to change.
Im DBA here, I need to take care of SQL cluster and MSDTC. But I haven't performed this activity before. So I'm worrying about Impacts and consequences of this change. steps how should I perform this activity.
Hi all,
We have many tables which have cluster index on column with datatype 'Char(200)'.
Does anyone have script to change cluster index to noncluster for all user tables which have clustered index on a column with 'char(200)' datatype.
Thanks,
Deepak
Wanted to know about difference between cluster and non cluster index with example.
When to use cluster index and non cluster index .
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Access](
 [AdminID] [int] NOT NULL,
 [FnID] [int] NOT NULL,
 CONSTRAINT [PK_AccessFn] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED
[Code] ....
why the cluster and non cluster indexed created on the same key?
I am asking about a virtual IP for SQL Server, is there a way we can assign a different IP to SQL Server other than the server's(host) IP address? like the same what we do in a clustered env.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am setting up SQL 2014 always on. I was able to set up the replicas between 2 servers in the same subnet.Their IP addresses are say like this:
100.20.200.200
100.20.200.201
When I am trying to introduce another node into the cluster which has IP address like 100.10.101.102, I am getting an error that the server isn't reachable.
Hi.
I have installed an SQL 2005 Failover Cluster on a Two Node Active Passive Windows 2003 Cluster. If i am trying to failover from the Active node to the passive Node,The Sql Server,Sql Server Agent and SQL Analysis resources fail,However if i reset the passowrd in the services tab of the above three services on the pasive node, the resources come online.
Below is the brief of my setup
1.I have two Active directory domain controllers running Windows 2003 R2 Standard edition with SP2.
2.i have installed a Windows 2003 Two Node Active Passive Cluster as NODE1 and NODE2.
3.The Domain account used to install WIndows 2003 A/P Cluster is Clusteradmin. This account is the member of Administartors on the Domain as well as the Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
4.SQL 2005 with SP2 is installed on both the Nodes as SQL 2005 Failover Cluster. The account used to install SQL 2005 is sqadmin. This account is the member of Administartors on the domain and the member of Local Admins on NODE1 and NODE2.
5.SLQ 2005 has four domain groups for 4 SQL Services. The Services are SQL Server,SQL Server Agent,SLQ Anaylisis Server and Full text Search.
6.Each of these servcie has a seperate service account created for them. All these service accounts areb the members of domain admin and the member of Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
7.Each of these servcies is running under these servcie accounts in the Servcies tab in NODE1 and NODE2.
8.If i fail the resources from NODE1 to NODE2 ,The SQL Server,SQL Server Agent and SQL Anaylisis resources are failing.on going to the service tab of NODE 2 I reset the password for these services, the services come online.
10.The Cluster resources and MSDTC Resources are Failing over successfully. They are coming online successfully.
11,I have a problem with the SQL Server Resources, even if i failback to NODE1 from NODE2,the same resources are failing again.
Plz Advice.

Khalid

Hi all:-
I am trying to set up a new database on the active passive cluster server. I want to have the data file (.mdf) on D: and the transaction log (.ldf) on T: but when I try to craete the database it tells me that the transaction log cannot be created on T: but if I try to craete the ldf and mdf on D: it works okay. Does anyone have an idea why this would be happening? The D and T drives are shared on the cluster.
ndba
Does anybody have any ideas?
Hope someone can help me on this one. We are up against the wall with no solution insight. Here’s the chronological flow.
Built up two Compaq Proliant 3000’s with Fiber Channel Array F100 (yes it is on the HCL for Clusters)Both 3000's are dual PII 450's with 512 MB RAM
Installed NT Server 4.0 EE
Installed SP3
Installed IE 4.01 SP1
Installed MSCS
Installed SQL 6.5 EE (after using bug fix).
Every thing works just fine at this point. Nothing else is installed and NO Compaq ‘junk’ or utilities installed. Just used the Smart Start CD as directed by Compaq
Go to install SQL Cluster using the SQL Cluster wizard and it fails every time while the dialog box says it is attempting to get SQL Services going. It does this whether we do it before or after installing SQL SP5A
Microsoft has escalated it internally because I am convinced they do not have a clue as to what is going on. We have sent them screen captures and the log of what is going on. Looks like it is failing trying to connect to or start the SQL Service at about the time it should be going over to the other node to update/copy files to the registry. The other node only has the client utilities on it for SQL as we are using the Active/Passive model.
So here I sit with $14,000 (internal cost) of hardware and it is not working. Needless to say it is very embarrassing and gives me a dirty name. I and the Cluster Support Team have been over this hardware and software several times and we can find nothing that is not installed as directed or misconfigured.
Any help, ideas, suggestions, etc are greatly appreciated.
As a side note the same install went just fine on an Alpha box. Here I have no choice but to use the Compaq/Intel chips

I've got two SQL Servers in a cluster activepassive mode. i want to change over the file location of the mdf, ndf, ldf files. Would that be moved across to the passive SQL Server automatically or do i have to do a major workaround ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the following SQL FCI configuration:
NODE1 -256GB
INST1 - 64GB min/64GB max
INST2 - 64GB min/64GB max
NODE2 - 256GB
INST3- 64GB min/64GB max
INST4- 64GB min/64GB max
With this configuration and if all instances are running on the same node there will be enough memory for them to run. Knowing that normally i ll have only 2 instances in each node wouldnt it be better the following config?
NODE1 -256GB
INST1 - 64GB min/128GB max
INST2 - 64GB min/128GB max
NODE2 - 256GB
INST3- 64GB min/128GB max
INST4- 64GB min/128GB max
With this configuration and in case all the instances (due to a failure) start running on only 1 node, SQL will adjust all instances to just use Min memory specified?

I have an urgent query that we are running SharePoint server 2013 on single server and installed SQL server 2012 on single server, our management decided that we need to configure failover cluster on existing SQL server. I want to confirm that it is possible that we can install failover clustering services on existing SQL server and then add an other server on SQL 2012 for high availability or do we need to first install failover cluster service and then install SQL server for failover clustering.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have (had) an active/active cluster. 2 physical machines,
each running their own instance, clustered together. Node1/Ins1 and Node2/Ins2.
Node2 failed and Ins2 failed over to Node1 as it should. Node2 required that we
rebuild the server (rebuild = reinstall O/S). Now we need to get Node2 back
into the cluster and get Ins2 failed back over to Node2.
Does anyone know, for certain, the correct steps to accomplish this? Obviously,
we could backup everything and completely destroy Ins2 and recreate it on Node2
then rejoin the cluster. But I'm looking for something less destructive.
Is it possible to reinstall SQL, then rejoin the cluster, and then fail Node2
over? Or will there be registry conflictions?
Any help would be appreciated. Also, if you have any links to some official
documentation, that would be great too.
Thanks
Hello All,If SQL Server is installed on a cluster will it be able to utilize the CPU and memory of all of the servers that are part of the cluster. For example, currently we run SQL Server on one server and at certain peak time the server CPU is maxed out. Will a cluster environment allow SQL Server to utilize mutiple servers for processing eliminating this problem? Thanks, Gary

View 2 Replies View RelatedHi,
I have a problem with my SQL cluster server and the project is supposed to go live in 2days !! The setup is as follows:
- 2 x NT SP6a Compaq servers
- Microsoft cluster server v1.0 (active/passive)
- SQL7 SP2 installed on cluster
- IIS4 installed on cluster
I had the SQL server working fine in a clustered environment and managed to fail it over to the 'other' server no problem. I then had to reinstall SQL SP2 on the passive node so following Microsoft guidelines I ...
- Used Cluster Failover Wizard on Node1 to remove the virtual SQL server
- Tried to apply SQL SP2 to the second node (after failover) but setup said it could not find SQL server !!!
- Tried to recreate the SQL virtual server on Node1 by rerunning Cluster Failover Wizard but I get a error message on the Node2 sqlstp .log saying ...
"An active SQL Server cluster has been detected. Run the SQL Server Clustering Wizard on both nodes to disable the cluster before installing."
I'm stuck. Help ! I cannot seem to re-cluster my SQL server.
Tim :(
I an involved in a project that will have five sql server instances on an NT cluster.
I cannot find anywhere on Technet info on what happens when a single instance fails. Do they all have to fail over or just the failed instance. This is important so that we get the disk layout correct.
Can anybody help ? or point me to any docs on this.
