Clustering & Installation With SQL 2000

Mar 22, 2001

I have 2 Node Cluster with 2000 Advanced.
I have SQL 2000 Enterprise. I am trying to setup a failover cluster (active/passive)

I have tried to follow the Microsoft Documentation that came with the box but whe hey what do u know - cannot get it to work. I cannot understand the lines "install a default instance of SQL that runs on both". What does this mean?? I know what a default instance means but running on Both ???

Does anyone have document that will show me the steps.

thanks in advance.

Clustering Installation Issue

Mar 1, 2004

I'm trying to install SQL 2000 on a newly clustered Win2000 system.

I'm getting the following error:
The drive chosen for the program files installation path, C:, is not valid on all nodes of the cluster. Choose another drive to install the program files.

I've read Microsoft's explanation of the error, and that the one server can't access the C: drive of the other server if file and print sharing isn't setup correctly. However...

I'm logged on as Administrator, and have full control of both machines.
I'm telling the SQL install to use the administrator account.
If I go to start->run-> and type \serverBC$ the share opens just fine.
I've also check the registry entries that MS suggests: HKey_LocalMachineSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurre ntVersion and make sure that the value for CommonFilesDir and ProgramFilesDir is the same on both the nodes. They're the same

I am trying to install the data files within the same group as the quorom drive, but that should just give me a warning (and it does) and shouldn't be this problem. I'm just trying to install to the system drive (C:) which certainly exists on both machines.

I've seen a couple other posts about this, but no solutions. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Matt

Clustering: Post Installation

Feb 12, 2008

Hi All,

After installing SQL Server 2005 in Clustering, what are the general post installation tasks that need to be done: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=818234dc-a17b-4f09-b282-c6830fead499&displaylang=en

(1) For SQL Server service & SQL Agent service, should I change the property " Affect the group". What else need to be changed.

(2) What should be the "Threshold" & "Period" which is there below "Affect the group" property. ( Goto Cluster Admin --> SQL Service --> Right click --> Advanced).

Thanks.

Installation And Licencing About MSSQL 2005 Standard Edition And Clustering Mode

Feb 8, 2007

Hi,

I have a question about using MSSQL server 2005 standard edition in Clustering mode.
I would like to build a msql cluster with only 2 servers (2 nodes).

I read here -> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=818234dc-a17b-4f09-b282-c6830fead499&DisplayLang=en
page 5 that you can use MSSQL server 2005 standard edition in Clustering mode with 2 nodes.

But my question is :
Can I use windows 2003 standard edition (Clustering mode managed ????) or I only can use windows 2003 enterprise edition ?

SQL 2000 Clustering

Mar 12, 2002

We are going to implement a SQL 2000 cluster in an active/passive setup. We are going to use multiple instances. What I am confused about is the naming of the virtual server and instances. In the microsoft documentation it states that all instance/virtual names must be unique across all nodes in the cluster. But the client always specifies the same virtual server name when connecting so how can the names be unique across all nodes??

I would have thought that if there was an instance created called inst1 on node A then during the installation that instance name would be replicated to the failover node B. When installing another instance on Node A do you have to specify a different virtual server and instance name on the failover node B??

Please help!!!!!!!

SQL 2000 Clustering

Jul 26, 2001

Should SQL Server 2000 (Enterprise edition) running on a Win2K Advanced Server (Active / Passive) cluster fail-over seamlessly?

We have been assured by our suppliers that current client connections (ODBC using TCP/IP) cannot be maintained during a fail-over. The result is that during a fail-over the client applications crash and users have to restart.

Do we have to modify the client application so that during a fail-over it will attempt to re-establish a connection?

Pointers to any resources for SQL 2000 clustering would be gratefully received (especially any which support the view that fail-over should be seamless).

Many Thanks

Is SQL 2000 Clustering Cr*p????

Jan 11, 2004

Howdy,

I have had questions from management about whether SQL 2000 clustering on windows 2000 is any good.

We are looking at spending *quite* a bit of money to implement it, but I want a "from the trenches" opinion of what its like , from the people that actually use it & look after it.

e.g.

DOES IT WORK LIKE IT SHOULD????????
Is it reliable?
Is it resource hungry?
Can I trust it to do what its supposed to do?

All repsonses very welcome. No response too small.

Thanks for your help.

Clustering SQL Server 2000

Jan 21, 2004

Environment:
SQL Server 2000 SP3a on W2K Advanced Server SP4.
1 IBM Server x440 with FastT700 Storage (Fibre Channel)

We need to buy another IBM Server x440 or x445 and we would like to make a cluster.
Question 1:
Once we build the Cluster with the installation of the Cluster Service, making the W2K Cluster, is it possible to upgrade the default instance of SQL Server to a default clusterd instance of SQL Server?
In BOL I have found a note that explain how to do this but I have some doubts.

When I installed SQL Server I placed the system files on the C: drive, the DB files on our SAN on disk E: and the log files on disk F:.

Question 2:
If we would like to use Windows Server 2003 what would be the possibility for an upgrade?
I mean, should I erase all and start with Windows Server 2003 setup or can you suggest to upgrade the OS first, from W2K Advanced Server, and then cluster SQL Server if possible?

Can you advice please?
Any help is really appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time.

Sql Server 2000 Clustering

Aug 2, 2001

If we have a stateful connection (RDS) and the database fails how will the application reconnect. I do not believe that our application was written using MSCS API. Therefore I don't believe that it caches the user logon and password to log back into the session. So, my question is can the application work with sql server clustering since it uses stateful connections? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

SQL Server Clustering 2000 Vs. 2005

Jan 18, 2007

I am getting ready to have a SQL Server failover cluster setup. I have used SQL 2000 for years, mostly for DTS and related database activities, but NOT in a cluster. I have used SQL 2005 for about one year but not intensively, and NOT in a cluster.

We need to set up a cluster. We are setting up a DELL EMC solution. I am going to hire a consultant to set it up, including the SQL part. My questions are should I use SQL 2000 or 2005? (I don't know if one is better than the other for clustering. Both are supported by our vendor for the application we are running.) How hard is it to maintain a cluster if one hasn't had experience in that area before? How should I prepare?

Any opinions or experiences that you would like to share would be helpful.

Thank you.

We have another systems that both testing and production are running on NON-cluster and we use backup/restore to transfer the database, can it apply in this case.

And I found that there are a tools called DTC, which can transfer all DB objects from one DB to another, is it a best way to transfer between non-cluster and cluster env.?

SQL Server 2000 Installation

May 26, 2004

I just installed SQL Server 2000 Developers edition on my computer. After installation I tried to create a simple table which I was unable to do. When I attempted to create the table, I went into SQL Server Enterprise Manager and under Console Root I extended / Microsoft SQL Servers / SQL Server Group / (local) Windows NT when it gave me the following 2 message box errors :

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An error 1069-(The service did not start due to login failure)occured while preforming this server operation on the MSSQL service.

---and---

A connection could not be established to (local).

Reason: SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen(Connect()).

Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Servier registion properties(by right-
clicking on the (local) node) and try again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have Windows XP Professional and currently run IIS. I have tried re-registering without success and at this point I don't know what I need to do in order to correct these errors and create a simple table.

New Installation Of Sql Server 2000

Hello Guru's, I need your help!

I installed sql server 2000 sp2 standard edition on Windows 2003, when
installing, it said "This version is not supported on this os", but I was told
to continue installing the software and that I could install the latest
security patches to bring it up to date. Will that work? Do I need to do
anything else? SQL Server 2000 is up and running on the box. When running
the statement " select @@version" it informed me that I was at 8.00.194
patch level. How can I tell if SQL Server 2000 is 32 or 64 bit? I was
trying to download the lasted patch and it asked for that info. Thanks.--

Help With Installation Of SQL Server 2000 SP4

Aug 15, 2006

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. To be honest, this is my first time i have encountered SQL Server 2000 SP4. I need some guidance as to how to install and set up the SQL Server 2000 SP4. I have done it with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and it's (I think) a lot easier to install and get it going.

My computer runs on windows XP Pro (windows 32bit). I got confused when i got to the following microsoft webpage - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8e2dfc8d-c20e-4446-99a9-b7f0213f8bc5&DisplayLang=en. I downloaded SQL2000-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE. And when running the setup.bat, the message came up saying "SQL Server 2000 is not installed on this machine. setup will now exit". What do i need to have the SQL Server 2000 installed on my machine?

Thank you in advance

SQL Server 2000 Installation Hang

Sep 30, 2004

Hi,

I am using Windows 2003 Standard Server (stand alone) and trying to install SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition. The installation stops whenever I have entered the sa password (the dialog box disappeared and then nothing happed, but the "setupsql" process (something like this) is still there).

The same happened when I install SQL Server 2000 in Windows 2000 Server. For Win2K, I can first install SQL Server 7.0 and then upgrade to 2000 (same SQL Server 2000 installation CD!). However, Windows 2003 doesn't support SQL Server 7.0. So I can't use this method...

Any idea?

Thanks.
