Co-Existing With MSDE
Dec 19, 2006
Can SQL Express reside on the same server as MSDE and both run at the same time (different apps)?
I have one app that runs on MSDE and a new to be developed app by a vendor that needs SQL Express.
Thanks

I went to look at the connection string previously entered for a dataset created in a new report, and am not seeing anything intuitive for bringing up the associated datasource dialog box that was used to enter name, type and connection string. I'm also noticing nothing intuitive for deleting an existing dataset. How do you do these two very simple things in an existing project? I dont see the dataset in solution explorer, I see it only in the text box on the data tab and in a limited kind of way on the dataset view where the columns show and maint is allowed mostly on the columns only. I tried hilighting the dataset here and hitting the delete key to no avail.

Hi All,
I would like to restore database using RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command.
If database exists already and has any open connections this command will fail.
I would like to close all existing connections to specific database before running RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command.
I can do closing from Management Studio using checkbox "Close Existing Connection" when deleting database. Actually I need to do the same but from script.
Please advice me how to do it.
Thanks in advance,
Roman

Hello,
I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my
text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters.
I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate
the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news
item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I
immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a
long news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is
"text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test,
I
simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still
recevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.
Thanks a lot.

I am trying to change the computer name of a machine running MSDE but I get an error when SQL Server starts. With regular SQL when I change the name of a computer I re-run setup and setup fixes this problem. MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem.
My question is "How do I change the name of a computer running MSDE with out reinstalling MSDE"

We currently have the problem, that all our machines are produced with the
same name and afterwards the name is changed. So we have the problem that
the checksum key for the MSDE isn't valid anymore. As MSDE can only be installed
from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem. Does anyone
know a solution for this problem ?? A program recalculating the cheksum ??

Manfred

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this this question but I'll give it a shot.
The only db development that I have ever done is in MS Access. I have a project at work that is being accomplished in VB and I need a db engine to use as the back end. Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?

I am rendering an Association Rules on Report Services. How do I make to filter the word "Existing", just like example below? I want to show attribute name only.
Pneu ML Road = Existing, Sport-100 = Existing -> Road Tubo de Pneu = Existing
to
Pneu ML Road, Sport-100 -> Road Tubo de Pneu
By the way I am using this code:
SELECT NODE_DESCRIPTION,ROUND(NODE_PROBABILITY,2)AS Probabilidade,ROUND(MSOLAP_NODE_SCORE,2)AS Importancia

Hullo!Doubt it matters too much, but I'll just start off by saying that I'm using C# ASP.NET 2.0 in Visual Studio 2005.I currently have a UID field entitled "ID", and I'd like to make it autonumbering so that users can input stuff into it through a simple web interface and not have to worry about the user's ID.Anyone know how I could go about doing this? I can't seem to find a way through VS2005's GUI, and I can't seem to find anything on the internet about doing it through an SQL statement. Thanks!

I've been handed a very old database to knock into shape for an ASP.NET energy monitoring website. The current tables seem to have been created as cross tabs from the meter raw data, and are in the form-
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[PW_Table] ( [Date] [int] NULL , [Meter_1] [float] NULL , [Meter_2] [float] NULL , [Meter_3] [float] NULL , [Meter_4] [float] NULL , [Meter_5] [float] NULL , [Meter_6] [float] NULL , [Meter_7] [float] NULL) ON [PRIMARY]
I'd like to rearrange them into the format-
ReadingID (Identity), ReadingDate (datetime), ReadingValue (float), MeterID (int)
I would set up a lookup table for the Meters and join on MeterID.
Converting the date value from an int into a DateTime is no problem, but I can't work out how to transpose the meter readings. Can anyone point me towards a way of doing this via SQL, or would it need to be done by hand?
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Hi All,
In SQL 6.5 ISQL, you can click on 'open folder' icon and specify an existing SQL script, open it, edit and execute.
But in SQL 7.0, I don't see a similar feature. I can only open my old sql script with Notepad, copy and paste it in ISQL 7.0.
Any idea?
Thanks

In SQL Server 2000, I would like to attach a Database that is the file of the Database on another system. I made a copy of my Client's Database at his site. Now I would like to attach it to my server and then copy the data from my Client's DB to mine.
The only problem is they have the same file names, so when I try to attach the copy I get an error message. Is there any way to change the name of the data file and log file that a database points to so that I can attach it to my Server?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I have one table Phone and a table SmsMessage that are linked by the Cellnumber. Cellnumber is the primary key in Phone.
For some reason in the table Phone the Cellnumbers are stored with extra spaces like: '+27000000000 ', but in the SmsMessage table the same value is stored as '+27000000000'. However when I want perform an update to trim the Cellnumbers, I get the message 'Cannot modify values Cellnumber in Phone because there are dependent values in SmsMessage.
The fact is that there are no dependent values, but for MSSQL '+27000000000' and '+27000000000 ' is the same????! Note that the function Len(Cellnumber) gives me the length of the string WITHOUT the spaces as well.
Even if I remove all relationships from Phone, I still get the same error. Are there more places in MSSQL where relationships are stored besides the Diagrams?
Or is there a command that tells MSSQL to ignore all relationships for the next query?
Any ideas?

Hi,
I have been given the assignment to come up with an Entity Relationship diagram of an existing database. The database wasn't designed by me. I was wondering if there is a standard scientific way of displaying the relationships between the various tables at a functional level on Visio. Since, I didn't design the database in the first place, I don't know how to take a step backward and recreate the ERD from the given database.
Any help will be appreciated.

I have a backup of the PRIMARY filegroup only, and am trying to restore it to my database. When I select the .bak file to restore from, I am NOT given any 'backup sets to restore' - I therefore cannot select the filegroup to restore it. Can anyone advise? (NOTE - I have backed up the transaction log on the database I am restoring to already)
