Column Data To Column Heading By Dynamic Pivot Maybe

Hi there,
I am a new member of this site and I am not very much aware of T-sql's working.
My question is what if I need to get one column's data to be the heading of another column.
To be very exact I have a school's database. The table I am talking about is of the results of students. The table contains Student ID, Subject ID, Total marks of the subject, Marks obtained in the subject. Now I want to print a report by generating data from this table. Right now the data is something like this

StudentID and SubjectID fields are related to other tables so I can get the names from there but when I need the report I need the data in the form of
StuID - Sub 1 - - - Sub 2 - - - Sub 3 - - - -Sub4
1 - - - - 38 - - - - - - 41 - - - - - - 42 - - - - - - 40
2 - - - - 35 - - - - - - 40 - - - - - - 42 - - - - - - 41
The Subjects can be different for different students so the query should be dynamic instead of hard coding the names of the subjects. I hope I am clear with my question. The subjectIDs or their names will become the headings and they will contain the obtained marks for that subjects in their columns just for the reports. I have also checked the PIVOT function but was not able to do what I wanted.

Hi All, I have never used PIVOT before but looks exactly what I want for this scenario: I have rows of dates associated with ID of Hotels and Room avalability for each Hotel/Date..... Where property value is some arbitrary detail. The real propertyType has 50 or 60 rows and not every property has all of the values. I am trying to create a pivot table that would look like so that I can present the data in an easier to understand format:
[Owner | Home | Car ] [ME | Blue | Black ] [Other| Red | Black ]
The propertyTypes are added often, and I don't really have the ability to change them. There is a unique constrant on property on nameid and typeid so there will never be two of the same property with the same owner. Any help would be very helpful.

In SSRS/RDL, How do you format a column heading to use carriage returns?
I have a couple of instance where I have a column heading that I want spread over 3 lines. For example, the column heading "= Actual Amount" I would want centered and displayed on 3 lines, as follows:
We run 2014 enterprise. I tried this with both table and matrix controls to no avail.
In the table scenario, I drag the table control over, instruct ssrs that a group name will go into column 1 and a sales figure in column2. Then I highlight the sales figure cell, add a column group on month number and generate my report off some june and july data.
ssrs understands that the months now expand horizontally but the rows alternate one with june filled in (blanks in july) and the next with july filled in for the same group name. I believe I got all my sort by conditions set but am not sure.
I tried all sorts of combos in the tablix and group properties before giving up.
Is there a way we can get Table and Column name in separate column using PIVOT or something?Right now what i have is:

we have a table called evaluation_questions, the table has following fields
queId,Question, level, parentId
the queId is primary key(auto number),where as the field "question" will have question, heading or the subheading, the level describes the hierarchy of the field "Question", 0 means its a heading, 1 means a subheading and 2 means a question. where as the parentId means describes the immediate parentId, like if it is 1, then the parent will be English heading....
so English is a heading as level is 0 and has no parent as parentId is also 0. Reading is a subheading as level is 1 and has a prent English as its parentId=1 which is the queId oof English same is the case with writing where as recognizing words and fluency both are questions as the level is 2 and their parentId is 2 which means they come under reading.

Now What i want is to retrieve the all the questions and headings under a specified heading.like if i pass parentID as a parameter to stored procedure i should get all the headings and questions under a specified parentID.i need to fill the dataset with it.
I am trying to pivot data based on columns value in year column... but results are not showing up correctly. I want to see all columns after pivot.I want to Pivot based on year shown in the data but it can be dynamic as year can go for last 3 years

Is it possible to include a currency symbol in an amount-field in PowerPivot/Pivottable based on a Currency column in a table? Something as the same as with SSAS MD. And I don't want fixed values in my code.
I have a single table that consist of 4 columns. Entity, ParamName, ParamsValue and ParamiValue. This table stores normalized Late Fee related parameters for apartments. The Entity field contains a code that identifies the apartment complex. The ParamName in a textual field that contains the name of the parameter that the other 2 fields define the value for; ParamsValue and ParamiValue. If the Late Fee parameter (as named in ParamName is something numerical then the value for that parameter can be found in ParamiValue else its in ParamsValue.
I don't know if 'Pivot' is the correct term to use for describing what I am trying to do because I've looked at the Pivot examples and I don't see how that will work for this. Using the Table and data as provided below, how would I construct a query so that I get 1 row per Entity in which the columns are the ParamsValue or ParamiValue for the ParamName listed in the column header (for the query)?

Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find relevant information.
We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc. And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.
I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic Number of columns.

Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.
Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.

I have some data in Excel - sheet1 which would be static.
Now I need to import data from SQL Server (using a query) and Union above static data with this SQL data and later I will have to create PowerPivot table in Sheet2.
Which is suitable option for me to import data from SQL to excel as I see "From SQL Server" option under "Data" and "Power Query" tab as well.
How to merge above SQL data with existing static data?
I have a table with Million plus records. Due to Running Totals article, I have been able to calculate the Trial_Balance for all months.
Now I am trying to provide a Beginning Balance for all months and the Logic is the Beginning Balance of July would be the Trial_Balance of June. I need to be able to do this for multiple account types. So the two datasets that need to be included in logic is actindx and Calendar_Month.
For actindx of 2 and Calendar_Month of 2014-01-01The Trial_Balance_Debit is 19585.46 This would make the Beginning_Balance of actindx 2 and Calendar_Month of 2014-02-01 19585.46

I would like to use a dynamic pivot table in my data source view. It seems that a named query can be only one sql statement. So, I cannot use my multi-statement procedure that creates a dynamic pivot table output.
What is the best course of action here? I could hard-code my pivot table query. I could maintain a redundant table in the pivot format. Do I have any good options?
Hi everyone,I encountered an error "Need to run the object to perform this operationCode execution exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" When I try to import data from Oracle to MS SQL Server with EnterpriseManager (version 8.0) using DTS Import/Export Wizard. Using MDS 2012: I have an entity "XYZ_Entity". In "XYZ_Entity" entity I have 2 domain based Columns "DealerGroup" and "Dealer".
While inserting information into "XYZ_Entity" entity user can select the required dealer group from domain base Dealer Group values. Now for selecting Dealer he wants the dealers to be filter based on selected dealer group and he can select from the filtered list. reason to do that is he don't want to go through thousands of dealers and select an incorrect one.
Hi, I was wondering how I can complete a column (which doesnt have an input one) with data. For example:
I have a sql query which bring data of 3 columns
ID | FISRT NAME | LAST NAME 1 MIKE MORGAN 2 SARA JOHANES
So, I will insert that data in a FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, which I configured with 3 columns and I did the corresponding mapping in the FLAT FILE DESTINTATION.
Now, If I add one more column in the FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, I will not have it mapped to a input one, obviously. So, what I need is to add one more column to the flat file destination and complete it with zeros values in it.
Probably I can solve this part by introducing a DERIVED COLUMN and there I can configure the zeros that I want to add to the column. But I'm not sure if I can do that without having a input column. So, the question will be, how can I add one column to a flat file which doesnt have a input and introduce any value that I want to it? Hope I was clear Thanks for your help.

I'm trying to Pivot and I keep getting an "Invalid Column Name" error, which I can't figure out since, if I run the query and exclude the Pivot statement, the query runs fine.
