Column Format In Destionation Excel File

Jan 8, 2007

Hello,

I have an SSIS package that basically runs a query and exports to an Excel destination. Everything works fine except for a date field that I use. When I preview the export it the date looks fine, as in a 1/7/07 2:05 PM for example. However, when I look at the actual Excel file/Export it will list the date as 1/7/07 without the time. I then have to format the column to the right date format in Excel for it to display correctly. I want to prevent the manual formatting due to the fact that this file needs to be automated.

Is there any way to make this happen?

Thanks,

Marco

DTS Output Excel File - How To Format?

Jun 8, 2004

Has anyone had experience formatting an excel file (i.e. run a macro) after it is (created &) outputted from a DTS package?

Also an easier question:
What is the best (easiest) way to create a unique filename in Excel with a datetimestamp in the file name (i.e. MyFile-20040608.xls)

Thanks!

Unable To Format Excel Destination Column For Numbers

Oct 31, 2006

Hi,

I have an excel export with numeric values. When the SSIS package writes into the excel it treats all data types as strings and attaches an apostrophe in the beginning. I tried formatting the excel sheet with the number data type and saving it . It doesnt work.

Other strange thing is that when I go into the advanced editor for the excel destination and look into the properties of the external columns all of them have the data type as Unicode String[DT_WSTR] irrespective of what the data type is from the input.The UI allows me to change it to numeric for numeric columns without any error but the value is not saved at all which is very frustrating. I also tried changing it in the xml file of the package, it some how seems to overwrite it after validation. It would be really nice if it threw an error saying that it cannot be changed.

Anyways there seems to be no way of changing the destination data type if it s an existing file and if I create a new excel sheet there is no way of formatting data. Is there any way out?

Thanks

How To Load Several Excel Files In The Same Database (same Structure, But Column Format Different)

May 30, 2008

Hello,

Here's my need :
In one directory there's several excels file. Theses file have the same structure :
col : LOOKID, LOOKNAME, ASMPID, ASMPNAME, LOOKTYPE, LTYP_NAME, PAR_TYPE, PTYP_NAME, PARAMETER, VALUE.
The problem is that the cell format of the PARAMETER col. is different bewteen excel files. It could be date, numeric, ... The col destination in sqlservr database is Varchar(10).

I've created the ssis package with a ForEach Loop, and in the ForEach loop I've created a Data Flow Task.
In the data Flow Task I've created an excell source file (using excel file with col PARAMETER in date format) with an OLE DB destination.

When I launch the package on the same excel file as the one using to create Excel Source object it's OK, no errors, and data in the sql table are OK.
But when I launch the package on Excel file with col. PARAMETER in numeric format, there's no execution errors, but in the destination table the value of the PARAMETER col. is transform in date format.

I tried to change in Excel source object the datatype of the input PARAMETER col, but I've got some compilations errors. It seems that SSIS recognize automaticaly excel source data type col. But may be I did something wrong in the excel source settings ?
Is there a way to force the excel source datatype with varchar(10) ?

I've also tried to do the treatment with an script task but my vb.net knowledge isn't enought to do that.

If you have some suggestions, I'm listening.

Thanks

Integration Services :: Open Excel File In Bad Format And Resave To New Sheet

Aug 17, 2015

I have a foreach loop that is processing all .xls files then moving them to a processed directory.Problem is that when I try to open the original file which is in .xls 97-2003 format, it's giving me a file error that SSIS could not read.  Found out the problem was called Extension Hardening.  I fixed it in the registry according to a website I found and I thought about writing a Batch file or Script to handle it, however SSIS still can't read unless I open and "save-as" to another format.  It even works if I still save it in 97-2003 format just has to be a different file.How can I open and resave the files (all excel files in directory through a loop) and rename them the same?

For example:
Original file named "ABCDEFG_08_15_2015.xls"

Can I loop through all files in the directory and name each one differently say "REVISED_ABCDEFG_08_15_2015.xls" so I can read them through SSIS?I think I need a @filename variable or something for that..

Cannot Import Excel Source File With Empty Last Column

Oct 23, 2007

Hi All,

I have a particular issue that has been causing me some problems for a while. I have an SSIS package that imports an excel file into my database, and then performs various data manipulation that I won't go into. The problem I am having is at the import end. The excel source file I am working on is provided to me by my client. It is a fixed format and doesn't change, it contains a header row and there are 32 headings. The trouble I am having is that quite often, the last column is empty, i.e. it contains no data. The header is still there, but theres no data underneath. When I try to import this file using my SSIS package it fails, and complains about needing to remove the metadata for this final column from the External Columns list (VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA). When I try to preview this file in the properties of the Excel Data Source, the last column does not exist. It's as if it's determining that as there is no data in that final column, that it's unnecessary and not part of the data set, even though it has a header.

Now I've done a bit of research, and found cases that a sort of like mine, I know that the excel file has the first 8 records sampled to determine the data format. This problem suggested to use the IMEX=1 extension in the connection string, which didn't help. I also discovered that when using flat files, if you have odd numbers of columns in your comma seperated list there can be problems. But neither of these issues seem to match the issue I'm facing.

Has ANYONE had a similar problem to me, and can anyone offer any kind of assistance regarding what I need to do to import an excel file that may or may not have data in the final column?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Exporting A Table With Changing Column Names To An Excel File

Oct 25, 2006

I'm trying to write an SSIS package that exports a table that has changing column names to an excel file. The column names change due to the fact that the table is created by a pivot daily. the only thing I'm missing is the ability to dynamically map the tables' columns to the excel destination. Is this possible?

I read in another thread that
"It is not possible to create packages or new objects within packages using SSIS."
I also read in the books online that "The input and the input columns of the Excel destination have no custom
properties." To me this means that I cannot programmatically create or remove columns in the excel destination. Please tell me I'm wrong.
So, to summarize my research so far. In writing an SSIS package, I cannot programmatically create a new excel destination object and I can't manipulate an existing one. I hope I'm wrong. Can anyone help me? (and please correct any wrong assumptions I may have stated)

(Urgent)How Can I Specify The Excel File's Column To Import Data As Varchar Instead Of Float

Hi,
I have a excel file which i want to import the data to sql server... The sql server Data type for that particular column is

varchar and it has a contraint too like the data should be in this fashion 00000-0000 or 00000...

but when i try to import the data from the excel to sql server... 08545 just becomes 8545 (cause excel is treating it as a float) and so my insert fails...

what can i do to rectify the problem...

How Do I Create A Package That Imports An Excel File Where Column Names Are Changing.

Sep 29, 2006

Hi,

Our company wants to allow our customers the ability to import employee data. Each customer's employee data changes depending on things like organisation structure etc. so the format of the data to be imported needs to change. We can do a lot of this with dynamic SQL, but are looking at moving it to SSIS as we think it will save us a lot of pain later on and for other features in SSIS.

We're stuck at a fairly early part of the process as we don't know how to dynamically import our spreadsheet. So far our best idea is to connect to the excel connection as the only step in the data task and then to use a script task on the control task, write code to connect to the excel source (set the excel source to not treat the first row as headers so we can do a 'select top 1 *...' ) then create a dynamic sql command to create the table.

Once this is done we would then have another data task that actually puts the data into the newly created table. This all sounds very difficult though. What are the options for doing what we want to do... have a feeling that we're missing something basic.

Any help appreciated,
TIA, Anthony.

DTS Export To Excel (How To Format Results In Excel)

Nov 22, 2005

Hi All

I've been googling this for a while now and can't seem to find any elegant answers.

I'm looking for an automated way to present a FORMATED Excel Spreadsheet to the Customer from a stored procedure output.

Can anyone advise me the best method of doing this - should I / can I assign an Excel Template to the DTS Task output ?

His mind is set on Excel and the formatting is basic and easy to write in a Macro which I've done, but this requires human interaction to finish the task (Automated Run Once on opening etc).

In an ideal world an individual would send an email to the Server with two formated parameters (@FromDate & @ToDate) and would be emailed back a ready formatted S/Sheet. But I believe he would be willing to just select the relevant SpreadSheet for the Daily / Weekly / Monthly periods dumped.

Thanks

Certain Numeric Fields Not Read From The Excel File When Using A Excel File Source.

Jul 20, 2006

I have the Excel Connection Manager and Source to read the contents from an Excel file. For some reason couple of numeric fields from the Excel worksheet are brought over as nulls even though they have a value of 300 and 150. I am not sure why this is happening. I looked into the format of the fields and they are set to General in Excel, I tried setting them to numeric and that did not help.

All the other content from the excel file is coming thru except for the 2 numeric fields.

I tried to bring the contents from the excel source to a text file in csv format and for some reason the 2 numeric fields came out as blank.

Any inputs on getting this addressed will be much appreciated.

Adapter To Convert CSV Format File To SAP IDOC Format

I am stuck at one place, where I have to convert CSV format file data into SAP IDOC format file. In SSIS we don't have any such SAP adapter (though we have .NET Data Provider for mySAP suite [SSIS SAP Adapter] but this is still not fully supported by Microsoft, plus it doesn't have feature to convert data into IDOC format) that can do this. Can someone here please provide me some pointers on any third party adapters available in market to do this job or if anyone has already developed some custom approach to achieve this task?

Your quick response on this is highly appreciated.

XML Format File For Bulk Insert Of Text File With Fixed Length Columns

Jan 2, 2008

Hey All,

Similar to a previous post (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=244646&SiteID=1), I am trying to import data into a SQL Table.

I am trying to program a small application that will import product data obtained through suppliers via CD-ROM. One supplier in particular uses Fixed width colums, and data looks like this:

Example of Data

0124015Apple Crate 32.12

0124016Bananna Box 12.56

0124017Mango Carton 15.98

0124018Seedless Watermelon 42.98
My Table would then have:
ProductID as int
Name as text
Cost as money

How would I go about extracting the data with an XML Format file? I am stumbling over how to tell it where to start picking up data for a specific column.
Is there any way that I could trim the Name column (i.e.: "Mango Carton " --> "Mango Carton")?

I don't know if it makes any difference, but I've been calling SQL from my code by doing this:

Code in C# Form

SqlConnection SqlConnection = new SqlConnection(global::SQLClients.Properties.Settings.Default.ClientPhonebookConnectionString);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();

cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "INSERT INTO PhonebookTable(Name, PhoneNumber) VALUES('" + txtName.Text.ToString() + "', '" + txtPhoneNumber.Text.ToString() + "')";
cmd.Connection = SqlConnection;

SqlConnection.Open();
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
SqlConnection.Close();
RefreshData();
I am running Visual Studio C# Express 2005 and SQL Server Express 2005.

Thanks for your time,

Hayden.
