Common(?) Problem For Updating A Text Field!

Hello,
I have an aspx page with a text box. The user may enter a large portion of text including symbols like ' or ". On form submitting I would like a database (text or varchar(MAX) ) field to be updated with the value of the text box...
The query that I have created for this purpose is the following: "string query ="UPDATE Article SET A_Content='" + content + "' WHERE A_Id=" + id;
As I said before the user may (and in most cases must) enter special characters like ' (example: bla bla blah it's very good bla bla blah).
The problem is that ' or " close the query string (SQL) and interpreter things that I am reffering to a field's name instead of the fields value (I think) resulting the following error:
The identifier that starts with...is too long.Maximum length is 128.
Unclosed quotation mark after the character string ...
I think that it must be a very common problem with many solutions but for some reason I cant find anything on the web.
What is the common practice to overcome the problem?
Is there a function that might transform text into SQL acceptable text?
Should I create methods for Replacing ' with other characters like ^^^ (text can be quite big...)?

I try to update a field of text datatype using WRITETEXT statement. The information that I try to change has both the single(') and double (") quotes in it.
How can I get it done ?

I have a complex issue that has several steps.
Question 1.
I need to be able to update the following path in the database, a text field

I need to update the path only to H:2007|( Winter019997.htm)Filename as in database.
Question 2
This needs to be done automatically so when attachments are being added this updates. How can I do this?

I have the attachments saved in this location C:Program Files etc… I need them moved to another location on the network. How can I do this?

Hi,I have a website using a SQL Server database to store all of it's data.Retrieving data and writing basic data back is fine, however, when i goto update one table that has a text field in it the update fails ifthe amount of data being passed to the text field is too large.Is there a way around this or a particular update i should be using?Any information would be greatly appreciated.CheersBj

I'm trying to do a simple update like I have done countless timesbefore.However, when I update the empty fields in this table it places a -1into the field rather than the enterred value.It is indexed with duplicates allowed. If I create a row with a nullable text column whose initial value is null and then update the column with a value that is exactly 256 characters long, the value remains null. Once I update the column to any other value (including null), it works as expected. I have not yet seen a way around this.

Hello all,
I have a table that holds a large amount of text in a field that is the body of the email. For example, it might say something like:
Quote: Email tech support at thisemail@email.com if you have any questions about the results of this test.
I need to change the email address in this field. Using this example I need to change thisemail@email.com to thatemail@email.com; however I do not want to change the other text in that field.
It is also important to note that the rest of the body of the emails stored here is different depending on the email.
So basically what I need is a statement that would look at a particular field, search for an email address, and replace that email address with another one without disturbing the rest of the text in that field. I already checked the w3 update tutorial and the update there is for the entire field.

This is feeling very hard for me, but is surely very easy for many of you.
I have 2 Tables. "Events" and "Meals". Both have a columns named "EventDate" and "EventTime". I need to be able to compile a list of both and sort by event date and time. For example, a Meal @ 5:30 would place itself between a 4:00 Event, and a 6:30 Event.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I know there is some kind of rule against the following SQL statement, but I was wondering what to do to get around this problem (some kind of grouping). Sorry for the stupid question.
SELECT * FROM Table1, Table2 WHERE Table1.ID IS NOT NULL AND Table2.ID IS NOT NULL
Basically I want to select all records from the two tables (they have the same fields, but are just different specialties) and then output them, but there is nothing in common between the two to reference one another, and it ends up in some kind of loop. Thanks. for the help.

I have a table activity which show the activities of the site. An activity could be related with no other entity or it could be related with an account, or with a contact or with an opportunity. An opportunity and a contact could be also related with an account.
My problem is that I need to show the activity and the related account (if there is any) but because the relationship with an account could be done by different ways, I dont know how to do it without join the account table several times.
This is my current query:

Here is my situation. I am building a report that has three different tables each with their own dataset. Example: Opportunities, Leads, Activities. All three of these datasets/tables have a common field - SalesID. I would like the report to show the first SalesID, then all Opportunities for that SalesID in the Opportunities table, followed by all Leads for that SalesID in the Leads table, followed by all Activities for that SalesID in the Activities table, and then rollover to the next SalesID and repeat that for all SalesIDs. Any suggestions on how I could achieve this? Thanks in advance for all help!!!

I've inherited a table of members that has the following structure:

[LastName] [nvarchar](250) NOT NULL,
[Code] ....
Based on the way the data loads into the table there's a possibility of some records being near duplicates of each other. For example, we can have a member that has records that have the same first name, last name, SSN, but different addresses, membercodes, subscribercode etc... This can happen in pretty much any variation thereof.
What I want to do, is add a new column and use that to group the similar records under based on comparing on several columns. By this I mean, if a member matches 4 of the 7 values below with another member, we would group these:
First Name (1st 3 characters)
Last Name
DOB
CurrentAddress1
MemberCode
SSN
SubscriberCode
I'm at a loss of how to structure the SQL to update the new column in the table.

If [Field1] contains text from [Field2] then return [Field3] as [Field4].
I had two tables where there were no matching keys. I did a cross apply and am now trying to parse out the description to build the key.

Hi,
Im a programmer for an university webportal which uses php and msssql.
When an user creates a new entry and his text is too long the entry is cut short and weird characters appear at the end of the entry.
For example:

How can I set the text limit to unlimited?
Could it be something else?
Is there a way of splitting an entry to several text fields automatically?

In SQL 2005 if i was trying to insert some data with a text qualifier inside a text qualified field, it would work, for example:
"Name","ID ","Location","","Comany",""House Name" Road",
In SQL 2012, this fails with the error message, cannot find the text qualifer for field.
To get around this, we are having to import the data into a Dirty Data column of aTEMP table, ID, Dirty Data, Clean data - perform multiple updates and change the text qualifier and ensure they are only changed in the right places so we can keep the ". In this example, we changed the text qualifier to PIPES.
After these updates, we then export the data from CLEAN data back out to CSV, then reimport it into the origional destination table with a new text qualifer.

Hi,
I'm importing an Access database to SQL Server 2000.
The issue I ran into is pretty frustrating... All Memo fields that get copied over (as Text fields) appear to be fine and visible in SQL Server Enterprise Manager... except when I display them on the web via ASP - everything is blank (no content at all).
I didn't have that problem with Access, so I ruled out the possibility that there's something wrong with the original data.
Is this some sort of an encoding problem that arose during database import?
I would appreciate any pointers.

I am trying to populate a field in a SQL table based on the valuesreturned from using substring on a text field.Example:Field Name = RecNumField Value = 024071023The 7th and 8th character of this number is the year. I am able toget those digits by saying substring(recnum,7,2) and I get '02'. Nowwhat I need to do is determine if this is >= 50 then concatenate a'19' to the front of it or if it is less that '50' concatenate a '20'.This particular example should return '2002'. Hi all,
i've a reasonable amount of experience with MS Access and less
experience with SQL Server. I've just written an .NET application that
uses an SQL Server database. I need to collate lots of data from around
the company in the simplest way, that can then be loaded into the SQL
Server database.
I decided to collect the info in Excel because that's what most people
know best and is the quickest to use. The idea being i could just copy
and paste the records directly into the SQL Server database table (in
the same format) using the SQL Server Management Studio, for
example.
Trouble is, i have a problem with line feed characters. If an Excel
cell contains a chunk of text with line breaks (Chr(10) or Chr(13))
then the copy'n'paste doesn't work - only the text up to the first line
break is pasted into the SQL Server database cell. The rest is not
pasted for some reason.
I've tried with MS Access too, copying and pasting the contents of a
memo field into SQL Server database, but with exactly the same problem.
I've tried with 'text' or 'varchar' SQL Server database field formats.
Since i've no experience of using different types of databases
interacting together, can someone suggest the simplest way of
transferring the data without getting this problem with the line feeds?
I don't want to spend hours writing scripts/programs when it's just
this linefeed problem that is preventing the whole lot just being
cut'n'pasted in 5 seconds!

Can anyone point me any solution how to export a MEMO field from an Access database to a TEXT field from an MS SQL Server 2000. The import export tool from SQL server doesn't import these fields if they are very large - around 9000 characters.

Hi,I been reading various web pages trying to figure out how I can extract some simple information from the XML below, but at present I cannot understand it.
I have a MS SQL 2005 database with which contains a field of type text (external database so field type cannot be changed to XML)The text field in the database is similar to the one below but I have simplified it by remove many of the unneeded tags in the <before> and <after> blocks. I also reformatted it to show the structure (original had no spaces or returns)
For each text field in the SQL table contain the XML I need to know the OldVal and the NewVal.

I am very new to using SQL. Our department usually uses Brio to query the various databases under our control. However, I have recently come against a problem that prompted me to create a custom SQL query which works well as far as it goes. My problem is looking for specific conditions in billing information I receive monthly. I would like to compare on of the date fields contained in the database with a field in the form of YYYYMM (200710, for October 2007) I have created a custom column generator that forms a date from the YYYYMM. I would like, however, do the translation on the fly and make the comparison during the query. The problem is that query without the date check returns a mass of data, only about 1 percent of which is what I want.
The beginning of the SQL query looks like this:

One ofthem is Danish and in one of my update scripts, I've come upon somethingstrange.I have a text containing the letter "å" which is a special Danish letter(along with ø and æ). I am attempting to write a script to add onto the end of a text field the words " -- Disposed " (About 60 rows worth).
The field is a TEXT field, so unlike a varchar field I can't just use Update as shown below.
Code:

I found on the Mircosoft pages about UPDATETEXT, but this only seem to work to update one row (In the case below Asset_ref = 3, was the only row effected) .

I've never used vars, cursors, updatetext or even text fields before. So maybe I am going about it totally the wrong way.
Is anyone able to tell me a better way to write this? or how to make it compatible to SQL2000?

Hi,
I want to update a field in my table whose value is a 0, to a value 1. This field is of type bit and here is the SP that I wrote to achieve this. Somhow, its giving some error when I tried executing it in the Query Analyzer. What am I doing wrong here??

All other fields are updating ok and I'm not getting an error.I am trying to update a date and time (smalldatetime) using a stored procedure.First, the info to be updated comes from a datagrid.

I have a sql database that includes a table of customer contact information. The area code for many of my customers is about to change. Is there a way to mass update the phone number field so that all phone numbers that currently start with 111 change to 222 ? Ex 1115554444 to 2225554444 ?
