Compact Database Error Code: 0
Jan 9, 2006
I am currently working in VB.NET with SQL Mobile 2005. I am trying to compact a database, .sdf, using the SqlCeEngine Object compact(connectionstring). When I use this code to compact a small database, only about 300KB, it returns okay however when I try to compact a larger database, about 9MB, it returns with a SQL Error Code: 0, "The operation completed successfully" however with no compacted database. The code works however it only seems to work for smaller databases. Does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this error or tell me why it returns with that type of error.

I am not sure if this should go here it is a bit of a mixed bag, sorry if it's in the wrong spot.
I am interested to know what ideas people might have in relation to the best way to structure/setup up an app that can connect to either an SQL Server Express DB or a Compact 3.5 DB. I have a small app that can be networked but a lot of people wont want a networkable version so I dont want them downloading an app that is 4mb but requires a 35mb SQL Express install just to get it to attach to what amounts to a local DB.
Both the System.Data.SQLClient and System.Data.sqlce namespaces include classes that share at least some (I haven't checked them all) classes that inherit from the same base class i.e. SQLConnection and SQLCeConnection both inherit DBConnection from System.Data.Common. so I am wondering if there is a tricky way that I can reduce my overall code overhead (mainly things like if statements to check which DB connection we want) by up casting both connections and managing them as DBConnections but at this stage I cant come up with one.
An in important point with this is that I intend to write SQL statements that are compatable with both SQL Express and SQL Compact, my DV structure is sufficiently simple enough that I can put up with the odd "wordy" SQL statement in favour of trying to use stored procedures and views in Express and then not being able to use them in Compact.
Cheers
Rob

I have tired for this!
When I use SSIS for extract data from ssas, that means,I use mdx query.
then random error occured.

Hello,
I am applying hourly differential backup to the backup server from production with the following command. This command makes the database on standby server into read only mode.
RESTORE DATABASE ARSYSTEM FROM DISK = 'E:SQL backup from productionsql_full_backup'
WITH MOVE 'arsystem' TO
'd:ardataarsystem.mdf' ,
MOVE 'arsystem_log' TO 'D:ARLOGARsystem' ,
STANDBY = 'E:SQL backup from productionSQL daily diff back up'
Now I want to run a command which will put the database in write mode. I have created a job which would make the datbase Write mode. This job runs successfully sometimes and fails sometimes. I need to ensure that the job always succeeds. When it fails, how do I troubleshoot and what is the possible fix?
Thanks in advance.
The error message is
Cannot apply the backup on device 'E:SQL backup from productionSQL daily diff back up' to database 'ARSYSTEM'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3136) RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3013). The step failed.
The steps for the job are as follows with the failing step highlighted in bold.
copy /y "\172.31.9.12Remedy BackupackupSQL backupsql_full_backup" "E:SQL backup from productionsql_full_backup"
copy /y "\172.31.9.12Remedy BackupackupSQL backupSQL daily diff back up" "E:SQL backup from productionSQL daily diff back up"
xp_cmdshell 'net stop "bmc remedy action request system server"'
exec rp_kill_db_processes 'ARSYSTEM'
RESTORE DATABASE ARSYSTEM
FROM DISK = 'E:SQL backup from productionsql_full_backup'
WITH
MOVE 'arsystem' TO 'd:ardataarsystem.mdf' ,
MOVE 'arsystem_log' TO 'D:ARLOGARsystem' ,
NORECOVERY
Failing step
RESTORE DATABASE ARSYSTEM
FROM DISK = 'E:SQL backup from productionSQL daily diff back up'
WITH
MOVE 'arsystem' TO 'd:ardataarsystem.mdf' ,
MOVE 'arsystem_log' TO 'D:ARLOGARsystem' ,

xp_cmdshell 'del /f "E:SQL backup from productionsql_full_backup"'
xp_cmdshell 'del /f "E:SQL backup from productionsql daily diff back up"'
xp_cmdshell 'net start "bmc remedy action request system server"'
I have scheduled the following hourly diffential restore job too which never fails.
RESTORE DATABASE ARSYSTEM FROM DISK = 'E:SQL backup from productionsql_full_backup'
WITH MOVE 'arsystem' TO
'd:ardataarsystem.mdf' ,
MOVE 'arsystem_log' TO 'D:ARLOGARsystem' ,
STANDBY = 'E:SQL backup from productionSQL daily diff back up'
EXEC MASTER..XP_CMDSHELL 'del /f "E:SQL backup from productionSQL daily diff back up"'

Hi All,
Recently in an SSIS package I am getting the following error for a particular Data flow task.
Error: 2008-01-25 12:01:48.58
Code: 0xC0202009
Source: Import Datasynapse Data User Events Source [3017]
Description: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x8000FFFF.
End Error
Error: 2008-01-25 12:01:48.73
Code: 0xC004701A
Source: Import Datasynapse Data DTS.Pipeline
Description: component "User Events Source" (3017) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC0202009.
End Error
Our guess is when the data size of User Events table is more it throws this error. If we try to transfer small subset of data it succeeds. What could be reason for this error?
Since this is very urgent, immediate response would be very much appreciated.
Thanks & Regards,
Prakash Srinivasan

I get the error above when I do the following.
Using VS 2008 I got a Windows Smart Device project targeting WM6 Standard and using .NET CF 3.5.
I add a new database file = creating an empty Compact 3.5 database (creates an sdf-file in my project).
Then create an empty dataset in the wizard (creates an xsd-file in my project).
Then I add a couple of tables in the database.
After that I want to use my earlier created dataset.
I mark the xsd-file and looks in Poperties.
I get the error when I try to change Custom Tool value from 'MSDataSetGenerator' to 'MSResultSetGenerator'.
Why????

Hello,
we've got a SQL Server 2005 which replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.5. Every 10 to 20 synchronisations we're getting the error mentioned above. A Soft reset of the device helps to make the synchronization working again.
Why is this error happening and how can we resolve this?
BTW, we've also running system that replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.0 without having this problems.
Thanks,
Markus

Hello:
I am still working on my project, but figured I would share my findings with the community, on how I imported my SQL Server database tables into a new SQL Compact Edition database. Unfortunately, I haven't figured a workaround to the IDENTITY_INSERT issue, but other than that, I will proceed.
1) I downloaded and played with the tool presented in the article "Generate SQL Insert statements for your SQL Server 2000 Database" I made the following modifications . (my modification can be found here)
a) Disable scripting dependencies
b) Add a filter for objects to script
c) Prompt for each table from which to export data
2) From the scripts output by this tool, I had to (which I may integrate into the tool later... who knows)
a) Remove 'On Primary' statements after the create table statements.
b) Remove date defaults.
c) Most other SQL generated by the tool seemed to work.
3) Execute each 'Create Table' statement individually.
4) For the Data Import, I had to add semi-colons to the end of each Insert Line.
5) I Have found no workaround for the IDENTITY_INSERT issue. If anyone has a good idea, I would love to hear it. In my case, I was importing the DotNetNuke core store module tables populated with about 2500 products and 20+ categories consisting of a simple categories table and products table. I imported the categories table into a fresh MS Access database file, and then ran the update query against the attached products table in the original SQL Database, then regenerated the insert statements, and imported the data generating fresh product ID's. This database will only be read only, so it didn't matter about maintaining the Product ID's, just the relationship between the products and categories.
Separately, I found a great blog article on how to embed a SQL script as a resource for your application and run it on your applications first run, so my steps above would provide a quick foundation for generating that sql script.

Hi,
I am wondering why a database that was 2Gb in size would come down to just 300Mb when I copy all the data from the origional database into a blank new one.
I ran a database shrink on the origional database but that only reduced it from 2.1 Gb to 2Gb.
I was shocked to see the size difference when I copied the data.
As far as I can tell the copied database still contains all the records of the origional.
I remember that MSAccess had a Compact function that literally copied all the data from one databse into a new empty one - is there the equivalent for SQL?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Here's the Active X Script I'm trying to migrate into an SSIS task:
Function Main()
Dim Engine, dbPath
dbPath = "c:path..."
Set Engine = CreateObject("JRO.JetEngine")
Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success
Engine.CompactDatabase "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & dbPath &
"database_UnCompress.mdb", _
"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & dbPath &
"testdatabase.mdb"
End Function
I have problems in migrating. Here are the questions:
1. Is the ShrinkDatabase task the SSIS equivalent of this script? If so, I'm having problems creating a new connection since it is an mdb file stored on local computer and not on a server. Is there a workaround on this?
2. If I have to use the script task, I use this codes:
Set Engine = CreateObject("DAO.DBEngine.35")
Engine.CompactDatabase "C:.path...database_UnCompress.mdb", "C:path... estdatabase.mdb"
or
Set Engine = CreateObject("JRO.JetEngine")
Engine.CompactDatabase "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=pathdatabase.mdb", _
"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=pathcompacted_database.mdb"
Both produce the same error: Option Strict On disallows late binding. Any suggestions?
3. I also tried to use the Execute SQL Task, using dbcc shrinkdatabase. But I seem lost again in creating a connection. Should I consider "database_UnCompress.mdb" as flat file source?
Any help deeply appreciated. Thanks.

Just released small piece of software with SQL Compact Edition, version 3, dll files distributed with the application.
Now feedback from 2 people suffering an error message as follows:
SQL Mobile usage is restricted on this platform. To use SQL Mobile, you must install SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, or the Tablet PC SKU.
Both using XP under Admin accounts.
My own testing did throw up this error prior to release, but only when I tried to run the program as a Limited User. I was unable to find out why. Running the program under an Administrator account never produced this error message.
The test-bed was a fresh install of XP, SP 2, running within VMware. An Administrator account was set up. No development software was installed, nor anything to do with SQL. I tried to make it a clean environment to be used by a non-technical user.
Any insights would be most appreciated.

Hi, there;
I got a SqlCe2.0 database here called JOB.sdf, size is 260K. When I tried to compact it, it took very long and that JOB.sdf.tmp was created with 27.7M!!!, I can still open table in the database, but I found that there is some invalid data (unreadable square boxes). It looks like database was corrupted. My application gave error:

Apart from compacting database, is there manual job or tool we can do/use to fix a corrupted database caused by power failure? (e.x: all data saved successfully before power failure)?

I have an application that uses a SQL Server Compact 3.5 database backend. Everytime the application starts I want to zero out my database, meaning remove all records and reseed all identities. This datatbase is then filled based on a directory structure. Once this DB is filled I then send the entire database to a Windows Mobile PPC device via 802.11g WIFI. Before sending the database I first create an MD5 checksum on both the server and client sides to see if the database actually needs to be transfered. If the checksums match I will not send it as the client already has the lastest copy.
My problem is that I can never count on the database identity values starting at the same number on any particular instance of the application so the checksums are usually different. To solve this problem I need to ensure that everytime I start my server application the database (and all identifiers) will always be the same, will always be as if I just creaed it. How do I do this?!?!?!? This seems like it would be a trivial operation as I can imagine its use in multiple situations. Anyone know how to zero out the database?

I am trying to complete sql server compact edition book online walkthrough "Creating a Mobile Application with SQL Server Compact Edition". I am successful to complete it as guided using all default settings (e.g. anonymous access, windows authenticaion etc.) and the sample run on both emulator and my pocket pc svc5000. I have following configuration..
Windows 2000 professional sp4
Sql server 2005 standard edition sp1

But the problem is that in production environment i will not be able to connect to the sql server using named instance (e.g machine_nameinstance_name). i have to use ip address in that situation. so i tried to modify the sample to use ip address in place of named instance and then the problem starts.. I have configued my sql server to allow remote connections using tcp/ip and named pipes using sql surface area config tool.

repl.Subscriber = "Test"

Try
repl.AddSubscription(AddOption.CreateDatabase)
repl.Synchronize()

When i tried to do replication using ip address it shows following error:

I'm using VS2008 RTM with a new SQL Compact 3.5 database and I read in VS2008 and SQL Compact 3.5 BOL that Database Diagrams are supported as well as Foreign Key creation from Server Explorer.
However, there doesn't seem to be support for this. Database Diagram commands are not displayed for this new database (but it is for my SQL Express database) as instructed by BOL.
Can anyone tell me if VS2008 fully supports SQL Compact 3.5 with database diagrams and visual tools to create relationships? If so, how can you create a database diagram in VS2008 for SQL Compact 3.5?

Hey guys,
So I started an SQL CE database for use inside a mobile application. I used SSMS to create a .sdf file (because if I let Visual Studio do it, SSMS can't open it because it will be version 3.5).
The reason I wanted to use SSMS is because I wanted to be able to design the database in design view, and populate it with initial information for the application to use. That means adding tables and rows.
The problem is, SSMS doesn't seem to have a design view available when working with CE databases. It also doesn't seem to have a feature for adding rows into tables. It's essentially as useless as VS2008 for designing my mobile database. It only lets me add tables, and I can't even do that visually in design view. I have to use those cumbersome forms.
Is there any way to design a CE database in design view? And add rows of data into tables? It feels like I'm overlooking something.
Note: I dont need to subscribe or publish the database. The mobile application just needs to use the database as a repository.

Hello dear all.
I am using a Compact Framework 2.0 on a mobile 5.0 with a local Microsoft SQL Compact Edition 2005 database. The backend database is a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and I am trying to pull a 45000 rows table (the table has 2 varchars(8) forming a primary key and an INTEGER column).
The statement I issue is the following:
rda.Pull(table.TableName, table.TableQuery, Program.RdaOleDbConnectionString, RdaTrackOption.TrackingOnWithIndexes, table.TableName + "Errors");
The application works perfectly when I am pulling smaller tables (up to 15000 rows) but when I try to pull this one I get the following error details:
sqlCeEx
{""}
base {System.SystemException}: {""}
Errors: {System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeErrorCollection}
errors: {System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeErrorCollection}
HResult: -2147024882
Message: ""
NativeError: 0
Source: "Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition"
Please have in mind that the handheld on which I deploy does not have an extra storage card.
I have done a thorough internet search and I have found no solution to this problem. I truly rely on you to find the solution.
Thanks in advance,
Steliosvcy.

Hi all,
I am trying to access my SQL Server database through SqlCeConnection:
cecon = new SqlCeConnection("Data Source=D:\D_Drive\csharppract\nddbpda\nddbpda\nddbpdadatabase.sdf");
cecon.Open();
I am getting the following error:
System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException was unhandled
Message="The path is not valid. Check the directory for the database. [ Path = D:\D_Drive\csharppract\nddbpda\nddbpda\nddbpdadatabase.sdf ]"
HResult=-2147467259
NativeError=25009

at System.Windows.Forms.Control.set_Visible()

When I tried to get the path from which the database file is being accepted, I got a different path:
string path;
path = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(
System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetName().CodeBase);
MessageBox.Show(path);
This code gives me this path:
Program Filesddbpda
Then I changed the path in my connection string to this:
cecon = new SqlCeConnection("Data Source=\Program Files\nddbpda\nddbpdadatabase.sdf");
cecon.Open();
When I ran my application it worked (virtually), but the database is not getting updated (for obvious reasons).
What should I do now to correct this?
Thanks in advance.
Saswata.

Hi,
Inside a single transaction I'm inserting/updating multiple records into multiple tables, in this order:
table 1 record 1
table 2 record 1
table 3 record 1
table 1 record 2
table 2 record 1
table 1 record 3
table 2 record 3
table 3 record 3
Now I'm getting an unspecified error on a certain table:
Unspecified error [ 3,-1300704038,-1834095882,activitypointerBase,x lock (x blocks),PAG (idx): 1078 ]
From msdn I see that:
PAG (idx) means a lock on an index page.
x lock means an exclusive lock:
Indicates a data modification, such as an insert, an update, or a deletion. Ensures that multiple updates cannot be made to the same resource at the same time. (I assume that multiple updates within the SAME transaction can be made, only multiple updates from different transaction cannot be made, right?)
I cannot find any reference to this error message and don't know what the numbers mean. Maybe it relates to data that can be found in the sys.lock_information table like explained here, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172932.aspx, but I'm not sure.
Furthermore, the sys.lock_information table is empty. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem myself. I only received an error log and the database to investigate it.
So, does anybody have an idea what this error message means and what I can do to troubleshoot this?
Thanks,
Jeffry
