Complex Push/Pull Merge Replication Question...

Mar 8, 2007

Hiya,

Our current application which uses SQL 2000/CE uses a single Merge publication to populate numerous "read only" tables on the mobile device, and create the schema for a "transactions" table, which will be filled by the mobile device during work, then merged at sync.

Now, the master "transactions" table at the publisher has millions of rows, and the mobile device does not need any of them... so currently we have it "filtering" by a always false clause, so that none of the data is pushed to the client.

The problem with this is that we cannot archive any of the records in the transaction table, as doing so (say, removing 200k rows) would result in the mobile devices (of which there are about 15,000 active in the field) to attempt to reconcile each of those 200k rows when it is next synced, which takes way too long.

Now, what we would like to do is upgrade to SQL 2005/CE 2005, if the new features will allow us a PULL ONLY table in some way? I cannot find how to do this via the wizard, but am sure I am missing something. At least I hope so.

Can anyone give a suggestion?

Thanks!

SELECT

give me publication_type=0. So it is transactional replication but how do we know that is pull or push?

Push Subscriber In Merge Replication

Jul 26, 2004

I am using merge replication with a push subscription type. I am wondering if the updates of the tables on the subscriber side are push to the publisher from the subscriber or pulled from the subscriber by the publisher when the syncronisation takes place. this makes a big diferrence for me and i can't find the answer to this question anywhere...

if anyone could answer it would be really appreciated

Merge Replication (Push) Over Internet

Sep 19, 2007

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could suggest a solution to my problem:

I have an in-house production database. I wanted to use Merge replication (push) to mirror parts of this data to our Internet server on the web which has a Public IP.

Steps I followed

1. Created an entry in €œC:WINNTsystem32driversetchosts€? file with IP
address of the Subscriber and just the €œServername€? of the Subscriber on
publisher machine (local server)

2. Created an Alias to the Subscriber

3. Connected to the remote server thru Mgt Studio

4. Created Merge Replication on the Local Database

5. Created Subscription to the remote server.

6. Started the Replication Agent

I receive following msg "The process could not connect to Subscriber 'ISVR'.

When I check the View Synchronization Status in Mgt studio it shows "The server 'ISVR' is not a Subscriber"

I presume that if we have a Public IP at our end, then the Merge Replication will be thru.

Is it possible to replicate without having a Public IP?

Any suggestions,

Thanks.

Merge Replication Push Using IP Address Fails? WTF?

Jun 7, 2007

I have a Merge publication that has multiple subscribers. They are all SQL Express, so it's all Push Subscriptions.

When I try to add a subscriber by it's IP address, the snapshot gets delivered. Schema created, data loaded, but I see the following error in Replication Monitor:

The merge process was unable to deliver the snapshot to the Subscriber. If using Web synchronization, the merge process may have been unable to create or write to the message file. When troubleshooting, restart the synchronization with verbose history logging and specify an output file to which to write. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147201001)

Cannot find the object 'MSmerge_ctsv_E0801EECCA824BB29D48D36D64D2BAEA', because it does not exist or you do not have permission. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 15151)

When I change the IP address in the script to the name of the machine it works perfectly. The ONLY thing I changed in the script was the IP address to the name.

The reason for this is that I have several client machines that will have connectivity, but NO name resolution back at the Server.

Please, Please, Please help!

SQL 2012 :: Complex Filter For Server Merge Replication

Jul 26, 2015

We have a table in an SQL Server 2012 database that stores tree-like structures. Simplified for the purpose of my question, it has the following format:

Id int identity,
ParentId int,
GroupId int

Each record of the table represents an object identified by Id. An object may or may not have a parent in the same table, such that object.ParentId = parentObject.Id. A root object has ParentId = NULL. There are multiple root objects, so the table in fact stores multiple trees. What’s important is that the tree depth is not fixed, i.e. theoretically there can be any number of ancestor generations for an object. GroupId is a property of a root object; in theory none of the children of a root object has to have GroupId <> NULL; it can be assumed that any child has the same GroupId value as its root object.

A sample table having two roots (one grandparent and one parent), one non-root parent/child and 4 child roots:

Id ParentId GroupId
----------------------------------------------------------
1 NULL 200 root grandparent
2 1 NULL non-root parent/child
3 2 NULL child
4 2 NULL child
5 NULL 300 root parent
6 5 NULL child
7 5 NULL child

The table is not normalised, i.e. there’s no separate {root_object : group} table. However I don’t think normalising the table would solve the problem.

Now the problem. We need to set up merge replication from the table above (Master table) to the table of the same format in another DB. We need to replicate only those rows of the Master table that have a certain fixed GroupId value, e.g. 200 in the example above. If we ensure that GroupId in all descendant objects of a root object has the same value in the table as the root object itself that would be trivial. The table would look like this:

Id ParentId GroupId
----------------------------------------------------------
1 NULL 200 root grandparent
2 1 200 non-root parent/child
3 2 200 child
4 2 200 child
5 NULL 300 root parent
6 5 300 child
7 5 300 child

And the filter would look like this:

WHERE GroupId = 200

However out of performance considerations, we would like to avoid if possible filling GroupId for the descendant objects, because as it must be clear from the above, GroupId for a descendant object is quite easily deducible via a stored procedure or UDF (just need to go up the tree until ParentId = NULL). The problem is, I don’t know how to achieve this in a merge replication filter: it would only allow WHERE conditions and joins. I’ve have not had much luck with joins for merge replication in general, but here we have more complex algorithm, because the number of tree levels can be different for every object. And merge replication would not allow using UDF…

Pull Or Push For Me?

Jul 22, 2001

I'm trying to replicate two very big databases with about 10 million
of 4000 characters each. The publisher is SQL 2000, subscriber
is SQL 7.0

The subscriber will also perform full text searches.

I'm trying to decide wheter I should use PULL or PUSH.
The publisher is operating on a very low quality/speed internet
connection, where the subscriber is enjoying a T1.

Help, anyone?

Thanks,

The design of the destination table is exactly the same as the source table except for the fact that it has one extra field.
Can I copy; in a single SQL statement; all rows in one table (that match given criteria) into another table allowing for the extra field?

Push And Pull Subscription?

Sep 20, 2005

As I understand replication in Sql2K the only difference in push or pull subscriptions is where the agent runs. If I wanted changes in the publisher to be sent to the subscribers immediately after the change then I thought push would be better. But, if I am equally interested in changes made at the subscriber then what should I use? Or does the agent monitor both the publisher and subscriber at the same time?

Question: About RDA Push And Pull

Nov 9, 2006

When we sync data using RDA, the logic should be as follows:

1. Create RDA, set isTracked=false

2. if (isTracked) then RDA.Push(<tablename>..);

3.Delete local table

4.RDA.Pull(<Tablename>)

5. Alter <tablename> Alter column <>

6 Set isTracked = True

My question is how can we know the value of isTracked? or we have to separate RDA.Pull and RDA.Push,

Can we just put them together in one function. But how do we know this table isTracked on?

Anyone knows?

Push And Pull Subscription From Publisher/Distributor?

May 30, 2001

Hi All,

Can push and pull subscriptions be configured on the publisher/distributer server?

We have server A running SQL Server 2000 configured as Publisher/Distributor and also a Push subscription (transactional replication) to Server B configured as Subscriber.

The idea was to have Server B as backup server if Server A goes down. Users will continue to update data in server B till server A is up.

Once server A is up, I want to synchronise the up-to-minuit date from Server B to Server A in the form of Transactional replication configured as "Pull Subscription" from Server A.

Is that possible?

Thanks

Push Merge Snapshot Fails With Data Is Null Message.

Mar 10, 2006

Hi,

I'm converting a replication script from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005.

I am getting an error with push merge with no way to figure out what is wrong.

I've configured replication on a single XP server in SQL 2005 RTM version.

I have a push merge set up between A and B and between B and C. All 3 databases are 9.0 compatibility.

The snapshot and merge jobs for the A to B run fine with no errors, and merge replicates ok.

The snapshot for B to C fails with this message:

Is there anyway (Manually or automatically) to clean those tables in SQL Server 2005 Express? Please help.

SQLEXPRESS Merge Pull Subscription

Feb 2, 2007

Hi all I have a question,

I am trying to enable a replication process between a SQL 2005 server and sqlexpress instances and i run into the following problem.

On the publisher a subscription (sp_addmergesubscription) is added for each 'machine' that participates in the replication. Is there a way to get around this?

Because when we distribute the installation we dont know all the machine names. I have made the publication accesible for anynymous access. But when the replication script is installed on the client ,the Error message that the subscription does not exists appears.

The only difference between the instal script for the client is that we do not add a sp_addmergesubscription on the server. Is it possible to let SQL server make an subscription when the client connects for the first time?

To summarize my question: Is there a way to enable the replication with only running a script on the client and not on the server?

If i need to explain it more in detail , just let me know and ill try

Pull Merge Constantly Have All The Same Conflicts

Jun 30, 2007

Hello.

Let me describe first my replication setup:

- SQL Server 2005 SP1 (SP2 coming soon)

- Approximately 35 remote users (Salesrep laptop) using Pull Subscriptions

- Merge (Bi-Directional) (8 articles - tables only)

- Merge (Uni-Directional) (5 articles - tables only)

- Transactional (5 articles - tables only)
Users receive data based on their territory #, therefore they receive their customers sets of data. It happens that customer change from one territory to another but not frequently. When it happens, so far so good, the data is redirected to the new salesrep using the model we configured (Territory table with SUSER_NAME() to filter the data).

Ok, here's my problem. Since a while, I can see in the replication monitor that some users seems to log the same conflict again and again (Merge process). I mean, checking the history for many subscribers, there is always the same number in the "Conflict" colums.
As an example:
- Merge completed after processing 18 data change(s) (4 insert(s), 14 update(s), 0 delete(s), 31 conflict(s))
- Merge completed after processing 27 data change(s) (10 insert(s), 17 update(s), 0 delete(s), 31 conflict(s))
- Merge completed after processing 20 data change(s) (5 insert(s), 15 update(s), 0 delete(s), 31 conflict(s))

and so on...(Those are only 3 historical entries for a single subscriptions but there are many like that, always with the same count of conflict - vary per user). It appears to me that the same conflicts come over and over.

The thing is that if I decide to reinitialize a subscription, conflicts will disappear, therefore I know that it is not a process on the server that keeps changing the data; anyway, even if it was, changes would be applied on the subscription because the server always win in my setup.

Any idea what should I do with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

We're having problems with push replication to multihomed clients. if the DNS contains multiple IP's and one of those are not reachable from the sql server. the replication fails. no matter order of IP adresses. i wrote a DNS proxy which re-ordered the IP's so that the "working" IP would come first in the list but no success until i filtered out so that the DNS proxy only replied with one, the working, IP.

the replication is part of a commercial application which we have no control over. are there any settings on the server side that can help here? I really want to fix the source of the problem and not patch it with a proxy.

any ideas are welcome. the server is sql 2005 standard and the clients are running 2005 express

SQL Server Replication Push Subscription Issues

Jun 21, 2007

Hi There,

I wonder if anyone has run into this problem before.

I have inherited a SQL Server 2000 box with what appears to be a push subscription set up on it. However, the original Subscription database has long since been removed, leaving that box with what is essentially an orphaned push subscription.

We are trying to remove the subscription, but do not understand how. All documentation I have found keeps insisting that this be done at the subscriber database (which is for all effective purposes, destroyed).

How do I get rid of it?

Any ideas would be dearly appreciated.

Thanks.

Merge Subscribers Pull Twice The Amount Of Rows

May 26, 2007

We are running merge replication, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise with SQL Mobile 2005 (Windows Mobile 5) subscribers. Partitions are filtered on HOST_ID.

Ocassionally we experience a situation where a subscriber experiences an unusually long synchronization duration, and upon examining Replication Monitor, it appears that twice the number of rows, or X the number of rows (up to 7 times the number of rows) that should have been inserted are recorded as synchronized for the session: once the normal amount as inserts and once the normal amount as updates. This occurs for all tables in the subscription. This occurs on a first time synchronization to an empty subscriber database where there should be only inserts taking place.

I have examined the snapshot partition folders for these users on the file system and they appear to be identical in size and content as other subscribers. Checking the last partition snapshot job run and other characteristics for the the subscriber in question, everything appears to be the same as other subscribers functioning normally.

The HOST_ID for us is an employee ID used to filter employee specific data. I have seen this happen if the subscriber changes the value for the HOST_ID used in filtering, after the mobile database has already been populated (2 employees attempt to use the same mobile device and database). But, we have seen this happen recently where the HOST_ID was apparantly never changed midstream.

This just started happening recently. The only modification around the same time frame was the implementation of a custom business logic handler/custom conflict resolver that performs like "Latest Wins" but has logic added to update the a last-update datetime column for selected transaction tables at time of synchronization, so that an SSIS job can detect the changed rows for copying incremental database changes to another application database. This all seems to be working perfectly.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Matt

Reinitializing Push Subscription After It Expired In Transactional Replication

Jan 24, 2007

I am using SQL 2000. How can I get my transactional replication reinitialized after it has failed with several attempts.

I know one way of doing it through enterprise manager and specifying the subscription to reinitialize. But this will apply the snapshot and will take long time.

Is there a fast way of doing it?

Problem Downloading The Snapshot Agent In A Merge Pull Subscription.

Jun 21, 2007

Hello.

I've been having an error when downloading the snapshot agent from our Publisher.

The articles selected are all the tables and all the stored procedures.

The Subscription is created programmatically and so is the synchronization. When trying to synchronize for the first time and when the subscriber tries to download the snapshot I have the following error:

Error messages:
The schema script 'Distrito_2.sch' could not be propagated to the subscriber. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147201001)
Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL-2147201001
The process could not read file 'GESZifuncAFRODITE$SILVITEST_GESZIF_GESZIF20070621182845Distrito_2.sch' due to OS error 3. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL20143)
Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL20143
The system cannot find the path specified.
(Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL3)
Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL3

The snapshot folder is at c:GESZifSnapshotFolder and the unc is \AfroditeSnapshot.

I'm getting a little desperate with this because we really need to propagate the schema changes around the subscribers.

Thanks in advance,

AVD

HOW To Pull Merge Subscriptions In SQL Server 2000 Using Stored Procedures ??? (URGENT)

Dec 15, 2005

I've successfully carried out pull subscription using Wizard in SQL server 2000.

But NOW its the time to deploy the project & I've to do it programatically........

i tried to use the default stored procedures like "sp_addmergepullsubscription ", "sp_addmergepullsubscription_agent  ", "sp_reinitmergepullsubscription ", with respective parameters.

Then using replmerge.exe i tried to execute the batch file But could not succeed......

Can anyone guide me from the Basics ??? (i knw the Replication Architecture its heirarchy....but have NO idea of performing it Programatically......!!!!!!!!)

by BASICS, i mean......how should i execute the resp. stored procedures with what parametes & the order i should follow in order to successfully pull a merge subscription in SQL server 2000.

if a Sample code is mentioned as example, would be better for me to understand....

Thanking all of you in anticipation...........

Complex SSIS Lookup/Merge Join Using NK And Dates

Feb 7, 2006

I had this (what seems to be a) simple question asked today and I'm afraid I didn't like my answer. Does anyone know the proper answer to this one:

Any ideas on how I can constrain a lookup or merge join based on the dimension row's effective and expired dates so three criteria are needed as follows:
1. DataStagingSource.ModifyDate < DataWarehouseDimension.RowExpiredDate AND
2. DataStagingSource.ModifyDate >= DataWarehouseDimension.RowEffectiveDate AND
3. DataStagingSource.NaturalKey = DataWarehouseDimension.NaturalKey

Replication HELP With PULL

Jan 25, 2002

I seem to be missing something.
I'm trying to pull a subscription from SQL Server 2000.
(To a desktop SQL 2000 install <msde i guess>)
The general error I keep running into is
When creating the subscription...

"Error 15004: Name cannot be NULL"

I cannot figure out where this problem originates.
I'm running the SQL Service account and Executive under a domain account.
(same one on both machines)

Does anyone know where I'm missing the Permissions for the subscription?

Please impart any Replication suggestions you have. Don't hold back....

Thanks in Advance,
Dano
