Concatenated Long Varchar Fields Are Getting Truncated

Mar 30, 2004

(I'm using MS SQL 2000)

I've two tables that I've made from some query subsets. Each table has a varchar field with notes/memos and I want to concatenate the fields into one long field.

The problem I'm running into is that when I run the query to check the concatenation, the field is truncated maybe 256 chars in.

I tried converting and casting the field as nvarchar 4000, and I've also done the same for the fields in the two tables, but that doesn't seem to help.

I can query for the fields from each table and none of them are truncated by themselves. It only happens after I concatenate them.

I've created a new table and inserted the results into it, but the field in it is also truncated.

Am I missing something obvious here?

Importing CSV - Extra Fields Concatenated

Mar 10, 2008

I have designed an SSIS package and in a data flow task I've defined my source and destination components and mapped all the fields. The task works fine as long as I have the same number of fields in my CSV file as what I have defined in the task.

The issue is that if my CSV contains more fields than what are declared in the mapping, then the extra fields at the end of each line are concatenated into the last column defined in my map. For instance:

CSV SQL
Product -> Product
M0 -> M0
M1 -> M1
M2 -> M2

This works fine, but if my CSV file looks like this:
Product
M0
M1
M2
M3
M4

The values in fields M3 and M4 are concatenated with M2 and all 3 are imported into field M2 in my sql table. Any ideas?

Truncated Fields

Hi!

In the results of our queries, the datas in the fields are truncated to 255 chars.

Is there a parameter to change to get the entire field? Their format is varchar 8000 and the fields are longer than 255 characters in the db.

Thanks for your help.

Any ideas?

All Text Fields Truncated To 255 Chars

Jun 25, 2006

Hi

I defined the following table in MSSQL 2000

sql Code:

Original
- sql Code

CREATE TABLE saved_query (
id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY,
name VARCHAR(32) NOT NULL,
query_text VARCHAR(2048) NOT NULL
)

CREATE TABLE saved_query (      id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY,      name VARCHAR(32) NOT NULL,      query_text VARCHAR(2048) NOT NULL)

and whenever I insert or update the query_text field, it's always truncated to 255 characters. Why? I clearly specified a larger field size. I also tried defining query_text as a "TEXT" but got the same result.

Thanks for any help

Fast Look Up Of Long (n)varchar

Mar 6, 2006

I have a table containing URLs. I want to be able to look up an URL veryfast, so I used an nvarchar to store the URL, and put an index on it(maybe naive).Anyway, I bump into:"The index entry of length 911 bytes for the index 'UQ__URL__1367E606'exceeds the maximum length of 900 bytes."What's the best way to handle this? I want to do the look up fast. Theonly thing I could think up was adding an extra column containing a digestfor the URL, and look up all URLs with the same digest, *and* having thesame value (which could give either 1 or 0 results).I am new to MS SQL, so I might describe a silly solution, basically I wantto look up URLs to ID the fastest way possible.--John MexIT: http://johnbokma.com/mexit/personal page: http://johnbokma.com/Experienced programmer available: http://castleamber.com/Happy Customers: http://castleamber.com/testimonials.html

How To You Convert An Oracle Long Field To Varchar 8000

Jan 17, 2007

I need to handle this conversion in SSIS and not on oracle.

The following expression is executed on a datatype of dt_str with a length of 8000.

SUBSTRING((DT_STR,8000,1252)Column_name,1,8000)

Records longer then 4000 bytes take an error path

The next expression with 4000 bytes works but there is truncation.

SUBSTRING((DT_STR,4000,1252)Column_name,1,4000)

Basically I need to know how to cast a text or ntext into a varchar or nvarchar using ssis but I need to capture the first 8000 byes without truncation.

is this possible?

Using SSIS Reading From oracle I can convert to a text or ntext field but I am having a hard time going directly to a varchar.

MSSQL Query Memory When Using Long Fields

Mar 3, 2006

Here is our problem...We are doing a lot of selects against a table that has one large fieldin it.If we do a select against all the fields except for description, thequery comes back relatively quickly. If we add that last field (768chars) to the query, our query takes 10x longer (5 seconds vs 56seconds.)When we run the one without the description column, we can watchperfmon and see a very quick spike to physical disk. If we add in thedescription field we can see that the server becomes I/O bound - thedisk sits at 100% until the query is complete. We have tweaked the min query memory setting for the server but itseems to have had no effect no matter how high we set it. Is theresome point at which MSSQL decides it cannot perform the transaction inmemory? What would I increase to cure this problem? For example:TMZDIFF int410WRITETIMEcharno 16System_Namecharno 64Timestampcharno16Name charno32Mount_Pointcharno32Size intno4 10Space_Usedintno410Space_Availableintno410Inode_Sizeintno410Inodes_Usedintno410Inodes_Freeintno410Space_Used_Percentintno410Inodes_Used_Percentintno410FS_Type charno8Space_Available_Percentintno410Name_U ncharno32Descriptionncharno768

Best Practice For Storing Long Text Fields

Sep 12, 2006

As we all know, there is a 8060 bytes size limit on SQL Server rows. Ihave a table which requires a number of text fields (5 or 6). Each ofthese text fields should support a max of 4000 characters. We currentlystore the data in varchar columns, which worked fine untill ourappetite for text fields increased to the current requirement of 5, 6fields of 4000 characters size. I am given to review a design, whichesentially suggests moving the text columns to a separate TextFieldstable. The TextFields table will have two columns - a unique referenceand a VARCHAR (4000) column, thus allowing us to crossreference withthe original record. My first impresion is that I'd rather use the SQLServer 'text' DB type instead, which would allow me the samefunctionality with much less effort and possibly better performance. Can anyone advise on advantages and disadvantages of the two optionsand what the best practice in this case would be.Any advise will be well appreciated.Tzanko

SQL Server 2014 :: Alter Table Add 2 Fields Takes Too Long

Sep 25, 2015

We have a proc that adds some fields to a few tables of ours and normally there are no issues. For one of our client databases this process is taking anywhere from 5-10 minutes to add the fields. This causes an issue where the app will timeout waiting. After plugging around and looking at the proc and trying different items i found it to only be for this one database and ONLY when there is data in the table. If i truncate the table and run the same procedure everything is fine. Tables all have same index on 4 columns and the columns being added are not indexed because of the stupid hoops we have to jump thru to pre-pivot data for our reporting package.

Parsing Varchar Fields

Sep 24, 2005

What are some good strategic approaches to using freeform text fields fordata that needs to be queried? We have a product whose tables we can'tchange, and I need to count on a "description" field for storing a value. Two, actually. I'm thinking of adopting this convention:InvoiceNumber@VendorAcronymThere'd be a lot of vendors.Additional issue: sometimes these values would be referred to in thedescription field, and I'd need to distinguish them as referrals ratherthan as original recorded instances of the values. For that, I imaginedeither:InvoiceNumber@@VendorAcronymorInvoiceNumber&VendorAcronymInvoiceNumber//VendorAcronymetc. -- something like that.I'm just wondering if there's best practice for doing anything this stupid(hey, I'm stuck with this as our only option just now; hopefully it's onlytemporary). How to parse out whatever I end up implementing -- well, itneeds to be tractable.Thoughts?--Scott

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Copy Varchar (max) Fields Slow

Mar 13, 2015

I'm archiving some data. In a 2 step process.

1. Copy old data from each table in LiveDB to same table in ArchiveDB.
2. Delete the data from each table in LiveDB which is in ArchiveDB

Both DBs SIMPLE recovery mode.

Each table has a clustered PK on a single int value. In both DBs

The tables with varchar(max) columns are taking a v.long time to copy over.

IS there anything I can change in the ArchiveDB to make it run faster.

It is the insert that is taking the time. I've tried dropping the clustered PKs in ArchiveDB tables and then rebuilding afterwards but it has not made any difference. After all I am adding data to the ArchiveDB in clustered index order, so wouldn't have expected it to.

How I can change the Archive DB but cannot touch the schema/settings of Live DB.

Dynamic Filedlength Of Varchar Fields In Source

Nov 21, 2006

I'm using SSIS to import data from a table (SQL) containing varchar fields. The problem is, that those varchar fields are changing over time (sometimes shrinking and sometimes expanding). I.e. from varchar(16) to varchar(20).

When I create my SSIS package, the package seem to store information about the length of each source-field. At runtime, if the field-length is larger then what the package expects an error is thown.

Is there anyway around this problem?

Oh, yeah... My destination fields are a lot wider then the source fields, so the problem is not that the varchar values doesn't fit in my destination table, but that the package expects the source to be smaller...

Optimization Gurus: Help With Varchar Vs. Text Fields Decision

Dec 16, 2007

Hi, I'm trying to improve performance for a db that stores messages.  The message is currently stored in an ntext field, but when I look at all the records from the past 3 months, I found that 88% are less than 1000 characters, and 97% are less than 3000 characters.  I don't want to actually limit the message size, but it seems like I might get much better performance using a varchar(3000) field to hold most of the messages, and a separate text field just used for those 3% that really are long. Is this a good idea?  If so, is it better to put the Message and LongMessage fields in the same table; or, have a separate table to hold the long messages?  If it is in a separate table, it would need to be left joined with the message table each time messages are retrieved. Also -- I am getting about 700 new messages daily, and right now have over 150,000 messages stored.  The vast majority of activity involves new messages.  Is this a good situation to look at using horizontal partitioning? Thanks for any help, I don't really have anyone to discuss this with and it is really helpful to get some other views!!

A NULL value for a CHAR column is correctly regonized as NULl in SQL Server, but a NULL value for of a mapping to a VARCHAR column in SQL Server is not recognized correctly and i get the value "'NULL'" in SQL Server (including the single comma.

Sample:

CSV file contains columns A and B. A and B contains the Text NULL.
Column A is mapped to a CHAR field, and column B is mapped to a VARCHAR field in SQL Server.
After the import, SQL has the following value: A = NULL as NULL, B 'NULL' as text.

Advice Needed : Nasty Problem PHP/MS SQL Server And Varchar Fields &> 255 In Length

I am currently working on a PHP based website that needs to be able to drawfrom Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL and given time and demand other RDBMS. Itook a lot of time and care creating a flexible and solid wrapper and amdeep into coding. The only problem is a noticed VARCHAR fields being drawnfrom SQL Server 2000 are being truncated to 255 characters.I searched around php.net and found the following :Note to Win32 Users: Due to a limitation in the underlying API used by PHP(MS DbLib C API), the length of VARCHAR fields is limited to 255. If youneed to store more data, use a TEXT field instead.(http://www.php.net/manual/en/functi...ield-length.php)The only problem with this advice is Text fields seem to be limited to 16characters in length, and I am having similar results in terms of truncationwith other character based fields that can store more than 255 characters.I am using PHP 4.3.3 running on IIS using the php_mssql.dll extensions andthe functions referenced here http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mssql.php.What are my options here? Nulls In Concatenated String

Sep 23, 2005

How do I prevent the following null 'Answer'?This SQL will return a null string for 'Answer' whenever the count is null either for 'subquery-1' or for 'subquery-2', even though the other is not null. I need a string in either case. It would be better to have 'Answer' be "f1=, f2=25" than to have nothing. It doesn't seem right that both COUNT's have to be non-null to get anything other than null for the concatenated 'Answer'. There ought to be a way for COUNT to return 0 in some cases where it now returns null. I'd expect/prefer an 'Answer' of "f1=0, f2=25" or maybe even "f1=<null>, f2=25".I expect I'd have the same problem with nulls even if I wasn't using subqueries.SELECT 'f1='+CAST(COUNT(subquery-1) AS VARCHAR)+', f2='+CAST(COUNT(subquery-2) AS VARCHAR) AS AnswerFROM table1WHERE condition=5GROUP BY fieldX
