I am taking details from a linked server file (.XLS file). Two of the fields in this file are STARTTIME and STARTDATE.
The problem I have is that these have to be imported into a SQL table, but only into one column of type DATETIME. The column name is STARTDATE. I really have no idea on how to go about this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have an SSIS conversion issue. I'm pulling two tables from a DB2 database into SQL 2005. One table has a list of work orders, and the other has a list of work order comments. There is a unique identifier between the two tables so that a join can be used, however, due to size limitations, I need to be able to combine both tables.
The end result will be replicated out for SQL Mobile Edition and the file is too large when both tables exist so I am wanting to concatinate all the comments for each work order into a single text field in the work orders table.
Here is what I am wanting to accomplish:
UPDATE tblWorkOrdersSET Comments = (SELECT Comments
FROM tblComments
WHERE tblWorkOrders.ReqNum =
tblComments.ReqNum)
I know that this statement will not work because there is a one-to-many relationship between the tables so each work order could get multiple results.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Newbie question regarding a db I have inherited. A table FullDocuments has a DocNo column with smallint data type and a SequenceNo column also with smallint data type.DocNo

Should the original database designer have used string data types for
these columns since they will never be used for math purposes?2.
Do I need to cast them to string data type (like nchar(4) - since
neither column will ever exceed 4 digits) to get the result I desire?3. Or can I keep them as smallint and modify my SELECT statement to allow concatination yielding a string result?
I am between the "newbie" and "intermediate" stages of writing SQL code and I am wondering if there is a way to capture multiple results into one field so I can basically create a "set" for a unique identifier. Here is few result samples I receive from this code I am using now.

I would like to create a single row for each "ReqNo" and have a field that will an array of the "ProcID" results I receive. In other words, for the first "ReqNo" 7102005, can I create a field that will combine the 1409, 1796 into one field? I am trying to capture an array of integers used for that "ReqNo" so I can use that as a unique identifier in a join for another table.
So, ideally my result would be:

I have one dymic report and one of the requirement is that,I want to check whether particular field is present there or not
For e.g In one of the case Fields!Name will come and in other case it won't.
There one dynmic column which calculated values based on all the column.
If I write in value field of this column as follows.[If status = "Name" and Field is not missing then take Name value,if field name is Consumer take value from Consumer and shows it in column.]

The subqueries in the script sometimes return NULL values so I use the following statement to change the default behavior of the concatination operator which prevents my query from returning NULL:

The problem I am having is I need to be able to use the query above in a view used for reporting. Unfortunately, you cannot use SET CONCAT_NULL_YIELDS_NULL ON in a view. This causes my query to return NULL if any of the subqueries return NULL. I could create a function to do something similar and reference the function in the query but I can't help but think there must be a way to get this done in a single query.
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind. I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while. Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.

The result set being produced shows the record of an item number. This result produces the correct ItemNo which I need to update. The field I am looking to update is an integer named Block.
When I run the update statement all records are updated and not the result set when I run the query by itself.

Why is the update changing each record? How can I change the update to choose the correct records?
I would like to replace the value in the Select query of CO OWNER with a space ' ' or NULL if the ORDINAL value = 0.
The CO OWNER name is stored in the CARDNAME table, and the OWNER name is stored in the NAME table. I can not change the db structure.

I am trying to fetch some data from a table .
I wanted to fetch data for which the order_date is >= 1st january 2005 and order_date< 10th January 2005 and for that I have a query
like

In this query i am getting result for which the order_date is 2005-05-27 and lots of other data for which my criteria is not matching.
The Order_Date is a datetime field.
If I am use convert function then i am getting the expected result

For each row returned by the SP, I need to make an insert on a 2nd table, using one of the parameters used on the SP, the PK of the original table and some more info. As in to identify rows, with a specific execution of a particular SP.

I have a report which displays a customers invoice, in both the companys local currency, and the customers local currency.
The report language is "English (United Kingdom)"
The fields showing customers currency language setting is set to something else, i.e. "France (French)" to display the Euro currency.
The application handles 34 currencies, the query returns the language string, ("France (French)"), to allow the report to bind its language setting to the querys output.
However, it doesn't work, a normal textbox will display the correct country name string, but Reporting Services cannot bind the language setting to a query result. So I also tried setting it as a report parameter, but no joy either (all currencys revert to USD).
I'm using =First(Fields!curFormat.Value, "myDataSet") to bind the 'language' setting, the result of this expression returns "France (French)", which is a valid option for this language setting, as it's in the drop down list.
Rather than create 34 seperate reports for each currency, are there any suggestions on how to bind a fields language setting to a query result?

I am new to SSIS so I'm sure this is easy to do but I can't seem to figure it out. I created a SQL task that creates a result set. I would like to loop through each result of the result set and insert it into another table.
I'm not sure how to map the result set as input to the second SQL task that will do the insert. I can put the variable in the parameter mapping but I don't know what the SQL should look like to insert this into my table. Each row of the result set has five columns. Normally I have something that looks like INSERT...Values(?,?,?,?,?) but because my input parameter is just one result set object this doesn't work.
Help?

I have an SSIS package which calls several other SSIS packages. The "mother" package has TrasactionOption set to "Supported". There is a sequence container and an imbedded Execute Package Task for each of my embedded packages. Each of the sequence containers has TransactionOption = Required. DTC is running.
When I run my mother package I get the following error within the first package executed "Bulk Insert with another outstanding result set should be run with XACT_ABORT on." I've looked high and low for others with this problem, but haven't found any resolution. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this error? I have tried using BEGIN TRANSACTION instead of using Required and I turn on XACT_ABORT, but it doesn't seem to help either. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2000 machine which calls a stored procedure on another 2000 machine via a linked server. The results come back and insert into a temporary table.
When I use the same code executing the from the 2000 machine over to 2005 machine via a linked server I cannot insert into the table. But I am able to see the data if I remove the insert statement.
I have tried to place the data into a permanent table without success. I have also checked to be sure the linked server properties are the same.
Any help on this would be appreciated. Below is the code. It is very simple and returns only one value but the bigger procedure that is ran returns several records and mutliple columns. This seems to easy but doesn't work.

What I want to do is: insert into newtable (field1, field2, sequence) select
(fielda, fieldb, #) from oldtable and have the sequence field "re-seed" to 1 every time the value in fielda/field1 changes. This added requirement makes this not an identity field problem, if I understand identity fields. This is a data conversion problem, so I'm converting 1000's of rows from oldtable to newtable and want the sequence to re-seed at every change in value of the fielda/field1 data; in fact fielda/field1 is a simplification as there could be multiple controlling fields forcing a re-seed.

I want to learn if its possible to get ID in trigger and set it to another field.
I can do it by using scope_identity and using update command but I dont want to run another update command.
This is a very heavy loaded system that runs maybe 10-30 transactions on every second and I cannot afford that. I come up with a solution by using sequences but if I could use ID would be better.
