Conditional Calculation Only If Non Zero / Non Null
Nov 14, 2007
Hi All
New to SQL / Reporting Services.
I have a text box that displays a percentage (calculated from 2 fields) see below:-
=((100/Count(Fields!PKCallResults.Value, "Sterling_Green_Passed"))*Count(Fields!PKCallResults.Value, "Sterling_Green_Presentations"))/100
I need to only perform this calculation if both fields have a non zero / non Null value, at present I get NAN displayed if the calculation fails.
How do I do this?
Sorry if this is really trivial..but I just cannot find any info on this.
Many thanks
Ed

Hi,
I need to create a conditional expresssion where if a null value is found, then a letter "N" must be inserted.
I create this expression but didnt work: (COL1 == NULL) ? "N" : COL1
So, if COL1 is null, then N .. but if it is nt null tehn COL1 = COL1
I think i', having a problem expressing the null.
Any idea for this?
Thanks!

Hi everyone!
I'm using a conditional split to discriminate modified records. My expression looks like this:
col1_source != col1_dest || col2_source != col2_des.....and so on. I use OLE DB Command afterward to update modified records.
It all works fine if no columns evaluate to null. If any (source or dest.) evaluates to null, component fails.
Any tips how to solve a problem?
It has to work like this:
If colX_source is null and colX_dest is not null --> Update
If colX_source is not null and colX_dest is null --> Update
If both colX_source and colX_dest are null --> No update
p.s. i apologize if a similar thread exists, I haven't found something of use to me.

A little puzzle with this Error - Status and PropertyType fields do not allow nulls while other columns do ( there are about 20 columns in original expression but left out for simplicity - these are created the same way ). Any ideas how to solve it?
[Conditional Split Filter Changes [813]] Error: The expression
"LOOK_Status != Status || LOOK_PropertyType != PropertyType
|| (LOOK_OfficeName != OfficeName || ISNULL(LOOK_OfficeName) != ISNULL(OfficeName))
|| (LOOK_OfficeID != OfficeID || ISNULL(LOOK_OfficeID) != ISNULL(OfficeID)) "
on "output "Listing Changed" (885)" evaluated to NULL, but the "component "Conditional Split Filter Changes" (813)" requires a Boolean results.
(My wish for next version is to have better expression editor and be able to see the output for those in dataflow transforms with lets say sample 200 rows)

There was a similar question to mine a few time ago about conditional execution, but I'm having some problems with it to which I couldn't find any answer, could anyone help?
My condition is checking if a DateTime from a DB table is null. I use the Execute SQL Task to retrieve the record (SELECT TOP 1 * FROM myTable WHERE conditions = TRUE), then I map 2 fields to their respective global variables.
Then I created the green arrow connector and used a precedence expression based on sucess. I used the expression IsNull(@variable). For some reason, even if the @variable comes as null - I checked the info in the DB - it still comes out as '1999-11-30'
I've looked around and the IsNull method can be used to also change the value in the event of it being null, could it be changing my variables value to this even if I didn't pass that value as a parameter to the function? If so, how else can I test it for null? I've tried "== null", "= null" and even ".equals(null)" - which I know is absurd, but I'm running out of options here...
Could you enlighten me, please???
Thanks in advance!

I have created calcalated measures in a SQL Server 2012 SSAS multi dimensional model by creating empty measures in the cube and use scope statements to fill the calculation.
(so I can use measure security on calculations
as explained here  )
SCOPE [Measures].[C];
THIS = IIF([B]=0,0,[Measures].[A]/[Measures].[B]);

Hello everyone,
Is there a way in order to execute a subscribed report based on a certain criteria?
For example, let's say send a report to users when data exist on the report else if no data is returned by the query
executed by the report then it will not send the report to users.
My current situation here is that users tend to say that this should not happen, since no pertinent information is contained in the report, why would they receive email with blank data in it.
Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry

Hey. I need to substitute a value from a table if the input var is null. This is fine if the value coming from table is not null. But, it the table value is also null, it doesn't work. The problem I'm getting is in the isnull line which is in Dark green color because @inFileVersion is set to null explicitly and when the isnull function evaluates, value returned from DR.FileVersion is also null which is correct. I want the null=null to return true which is why i set ansi_nulls off. But it doesn't return anything. And the select statement should return something but in my case it returns null. If I comment the isnull statements in the where clause, everything works fine. Please tell me what am I doing wrong. Is it possible to do this without setting the ansi_nulls to off??? Thank you
set ansi_nulls off
go
declare
@inFileName VARCHAR (100),
@inFileSize INT,
@Id int,
@inlanguageid INT,
@inFileVersion VARCHAR (100),
@ExeState int
set @inFileName = 'A0006337.EXE'
set @inFileSize = 28796
set @Id= 1
set @inlanguageid =null
set @inFileVersion =NULL
set @ExeState =0
select Dr.StateID from table1 dR
where
DR.[FileName] = @inFileName
AND DR.FileSize =@inFileSize
AND DR.FileVersion = isnull(@inFileVersion,DR.FileVersion)
AND DR.languageid = isnull(@inlanguageid,null)
AND DR.[ID]= @ID
)
go
set ansi_nulls on

I have the following code in the color property of a textbox. However, when I run my report all of the values in this column display in green regardless of their value.
=SWITCH(Fields!Wrap.Value >= 3, "Red", Fields!Wrap.Value < 3, "Green")
I already tried =iif(Fields!Wrap.Value >= 3 , "Red", "Green") and got the same results.
Is it because this is a matrix report? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance . . .

when i preview the report , it displays checked NULL check box beside CNAME parameter . I want to give some meaningful name(i.e.ALLCustomers) to this checkbox instead of NULL.Â

I have a flat file with the following columns
SampleID  Rep_Number  Product  Protein  Fat  Solids
In the flat file SampleID and Product are populated in the first row only, rest of the rows only have values for Rep_Number, Protein, Fat, Solids.
SampleID and Product are blank for the rest of the rows. So my task is to fill those blank rows with the first row that has the sampleID and Product and load into the table.

I have a report that is run on a monthly basis with a default date of null. The stored procedure determines the month-end date that it should use should it be sent a null date.
The report works fine when I tell it to create a history entry; however, when I try to add a subscription it doesn't appear to like the null parameter value. Since I have told the report to have a default value of null it doesn't allow me to enter a value on the subscription page.
Now, I suppose I could remove the parameter altogether from the stored proc, but then the users would never be able to run the report for a previous time period. Can someone explain to me why default values aren't allowed to be used on subscriptions when they seem to work fine for ad hoc and scheduled reports? This is really quite frustrating as most of my reports require a date value and default to null so that the user doesn't have to enter them for the latest data.
An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help

I run a stored procedure for which I have a return variable. The stored procedure returns the ID of a row in a table if it exists:
m_sqlCmd.ExecuteScalar();
The m_sqlCmd has been fed an SQLParameter with direction set to output.
When the stored proc returns, I want to test it. Now when there IS a row it returns the ID ok.
When the row doesn't exist, in my watch I have:
m_sqlParam.SqlValue with value {Null}
I can't seem to work out how to test this value out.
I've tried several things but none seem to work.
This line compiles ok, but the following runs into the IF statement as if the SqlValue is null??
if (m_sqlParam.SqlValue != null)....
{
// I'm here!! I thought the watch says this is null???
}
Sorry if this is obvious, but I can't work this one out!!

Hello.
I've built a sample CLR function with the following declaration....
CREATE FUNCTION GetManager(@DeptCode nvarchar(3))
RETURNS nvarchar(1000)
WITH RETURNS NULL ON NULL INPUT
AS
EXTERNAL NAME Assembly1.[ClassLibrary1.MyVBClass].MyManager
And it works as expected, except when I use NULL:
DECLARE @MyManager nvarchar(1000)
EXEC @MyManager = dbo.GetManager NULL
PRINT @MyManager
It returns the value "Unknown" as it would have for any unknown DeptCode, as-programmed.
I'm of the theory it should have returned NULL without actually firing the function? Or is this only for non-CLR items... or stored procedures, not functions?

We have a case where in we should show date based on conditions for e.g if we had a column defined as
col varchar(10) then we would show col as 'NULL' for some condition and actual value when no condition
Normaly date values are stored here e.g under col 20150901 .
CaseÂ
when col>'20150901' then 'NULL'
else col
end as Derivedcol
Note this is an extract process and we are presenting data by pumping the data in a table .
Now there is another similar column -colz varchar(10) Â which stores date but doesnt have case condition so whenever date has no value its shows null which is database null.
So whats the difference between database null and string null ?
 How can we show database null for the case condition instead of string "null"?

Hi,
My predicament is - where do I do these calculations - in my vb.net code or in an SQL stored procedure?
My manager has handed me a task of converting an excel file she uses in to a web aplication.
While it has been easy to devise what should be the screens and how to capture data, I am struggling over how to code the calculations.
The calculations in excel are pretty simple. These are just sequential calculations (about a 150 calculation for average 500 rows). Mathametical operations include sum, average, max min - regular excel stuff. Some calculations involve vlookup (equvalent to calculation based on value derived from a reference table).
So I am stil wondering - where do I do these calculations - in my vb.net code or in an SQL stored procedure?
Since these calculations are required a produce a result in an online environment, what will be faster?
I tried to do a proof of concept by creating a sample calculation in a .NET class and an in a stored procedure. The choice is still not clear. SQL code execution time was not bad. But SQL code tended to be very messy.VB.net code seemed to be a little slow. But seemed a more organised to look at.
Any views that you can offer will be very helpful.
Thanks in advance.

My aim is to do something like what I have explained below and I was planning on building this logic at the Database level only rather than on the frontend code.
There are certain allocations(transactions) that happen on a periodic basis and I am storing these transactions in the PurchaseTranMaster and PurchaseTranDetail table. These transactions are categorized as 'Main' type and the amount could be allocated for one or many categories in a single transaction. Below is how it will be saved in the 2 table
PurchaseTranMaster
TranID TranDate TranType
1 14-March-2008 Main
2 17-March-2008 Main
3 1 9-March-2008 Main
PurchaseTranDetail
TranID Amount Category Debit_TranId
1 1000 A
1 1000 B
2 2000 B
3 300 A
3 400 C
Now what happens is users of my application can make purchases under all these categories only until the Balance under these categories is > than purchase amount. The Balance is calculated as sum of all transactions. It means that w.r.t the above data the balances for each category is(this is not stored in the database)
A 1300
B 3000
C 400
So lets say a user does make a purchase(Trantype is 'SUB') of 300 under A and 400 under B in a single transaction. The data would then be stored in the tables as
PurchaseTranMaster
TranID TranDate TranType
1 14-March-2008 Main
2 17-March-2008 Main
3 19-March-2008 Main
4 20-March-2008 SUB
PurchaseTranDetail
TranID Amount Category Debit_TranId
1 1000 A
1 1000 B
2 2000 B
3 300 A
3 400 C
4 300 A 1
4 400 B 1
In the PurchaseTranDetail the Debit_TranId value means that the amount has been marked against the TranID 1. This TranId is not handpicked by the user and the system should allocate it accordingly based on the amount available for a particualar category for a Main Transaction. It means that before TranId 4 was saved in the database then the system would first check whether the Total available balance for A >=300 and B>=400 (in our example above it is 1300 and 3000 resp)
Then if the Balance is > than the puchase amount then the allocation would be done by the system and this would be done against the TranID whose TranDate was the earliest, so thats why the Debit_TranId column has 1 as TranId 1 was the earliest.so logically now the balance for the categories would be (this is not saved in the database)
A 1000
B 2600
C 400
So next time again when a user would make a purchase(transaction) under A for 800 and under B for 1000 then if the balance is greater than the purchase amount(which in this case it is) the allocation would happen according to the earliest TranId and this time amount would be partly marked against TranId 1 , TranID 2 and TranID 3. The data would look like this
PurchaseTranMaster
TranID TranDate TranType
1 14-March-2008 Main
2 17-March-2008 Main
3 19-March-2008 Main
4 20-March-2008 SUB
5 21-March-2008 SUB
TranID Amount Category Debit_TranId
1 1000 A
1 1000 B
2 2000 B
3 300 A
3 400 C
4 300 A 1
4 400 B 1
5 700 A 1
5 100 A 3
5 600 B 1
5 400 B 2
I need to do the above taking into consideration that there could be multiple users making purchases(concurrency).
Also I was building my logic on doing the above whether to use cursors or loops. I just need to know how do I write my stored procedure and what would be the most efficeint way of doing the above.
The design for creating the above sample tables is below
/*CREATE TABLE PurchaseTranMaster
(
TranID int IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED,
TranDate Datetime,
TranType varchar(30)
)
CREATE TABLE PurchaseTranDetail
(
TranID int,
Amount int,
Category Varchar(20),
Debit_TranId int
)
insert into PurchaseTranMaster values(convert(datetime,' 14-March-2008',103),'Main')
insert into PurchaseTranMaster values(convert(datetime,' 17-March-2008',103),'Main')
insert into PurchaseTranMaster values(convert(datetime,' 19-March-2008',103),'Main')
insert into PurchaseTranMaster values(convert(datetime,' 20-March-2008',103),'SUB')
insert into PurchaseTranMaster values(convert(datetime,' 21-March-2008',103),'SUB')
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(1,1000,'A',0)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(1,1000,'B',0)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(2,2000,'B',0)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(3,300,'A',0)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(3,400,'C',0)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(4,300,'A',1)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(4,400,'B',1)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(5,700,'A',1)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(5,100,'A',3)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(5,600,'B',1)
insert into PurchaseTranDetail values(5,400,'B',2)*/

I need to create a user defined function to calculation the difference between today and a future date. The result needs to be in days, hours, and minutes formatted as per the following example: 1d / 4h / 30m. I have a moderate level of SQL exprience. however, I would appreciate some expert advice as the best way to approach this.
