Is there a way to do a conditional order by so that a user can give a parameter to a stored proc and it give back results sorted the way they want?
I want it so that the user can do 1 of 4 things,
* sort by "title" ascending,
* sort by "title" descending,
* sort by "synopsis" ascending,
* sort by "synopsis" descending
Can it be done? This is what I have but I get a syntax error:
select * from Blah
Order By
Case
when @orderId = 1 then title asc
when @orderId = 2 then title desc
when @orderId = 3 then synopsis asc
when @orderId = 4 then synopsis desc
end
In SQL sERVER 2008, I have two fields - Depatment and Employees. I need to sort the result set by employee number ascending order, with following exception
1)when department number = 50 - the preferred order is Employee # - 573 followed by 551-572 (employee # belong to Dept 50 = 551-573)
2)When Department number = 20 – the preferred sort order is Employee # 213-220, followed by Employee # 201-213 (employee # belong to Dept 20 = 201-220)
I would like to write the following (pseudo) stored procedure, but am having problem with the syntax:

The problem is in conditionally setting the sort order. The actual sp is quite complex and I don't really want to have to use two procedures (one for ordering by ShippingPeriod and one for ordering by ContractDate
I need to create a conditional if or case statement in SQL Server 2000 for a stored procedure. Basically if the value passed in is 1,2 or 3 then it will order by either NEWID(), a text field or a datetime feild.

Is there a way in order to execute a subscribed report based on a certain criteria?
For example, let's say send a report to users when data exist on the report else if no data is returned by the query executed by the report then it will not send the report to users.

I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.
For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.
I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.
I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row.However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.
I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.
Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?

Of course we can add order by aid also, but there are tons of sqls like this, we can't update our application in one shot.
So I ask for your advice here, is there any settings can tell the db use default sort order when the order by column value are the same? Or is there any other solution to resolve this problem in one shot?

I have created view by jaoining two table and have order by clause.
The sql generated is as follows

If I run sql the results are displayed in proper order but the view only order by first item in order by clause.

Now, I would like to order the results of this query... but I don't want to simply order them by ASC or DESC. Instead, I need to order them as follows:

My question: Can this be done through MS SQL or do I need to add a field to my [Leadership] table named 'leadershipImportance' or something as an integer to denote the level of importance of the position so that I can order on that value ASC or DESC?

Hi! For the Orders table (let's assume for the Northwind database), I'm trying to get the order id of the latest order for every customer. That means that the result should be one record per customer and that would display CustomerID and OrderID.
The data file is a simple Unicode file with lines of text. BCPapparently doesn't guarantee this ordering, and neither does theimport tool. I want to be able to load the data either sequentially oradd line numbering to large Unicode file (1 million lines). Hi, is it possible to do a conditional WHERE in T-SQL? I have a table with a column that consists of a reference that starts with either a single alpha character or two alpha characters followed by four numeric digits (the numeric portion is always unique but the alpha isn’t). E.g. A1234, AB1235, AB1236, C1237, HT1238. What I want to do is select a range of rows based on the numeric portion of this reference column. In other words I want to select say 50 rows starting from row 1000 (rows 1000 to 1050) regardless of whether there is one or two alpha characters preceding the numerics.The Stored procedure I have so far works (using COUNT for testing) for selecting a range of rows that has two alpha's at the start. However, if I simply add an OR to the WHERE to select rows where there is a single alpha in the reference column, when a single alpha reference is found it will fail the first logical check for two alpha's giving an error condition. Therefore, how can I incorporate a conditional WHERE using IF or some alternative method, so that it will also give me all the rows in the number sequence that start with either single or double alpha's within the same SELECT / WHERE statement?

I have an SqlDataSource that uses a value from the query string in the WHERE clause of the sql statement. The sql is something like this: SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE myfield = @myfield and I have the QueryStringParameter setup like this: <asp:QueryStringParameter Name="myfield" QueryStringField="myfield" /> What I need is for the sql statement to return all records in the case that "myfield" is not defined in the query string.
