I need to find a way to use conditional compilation option to change the connection string in ado.net datasets 2.0.
Debug > connection 1 : test server
Release > connection 2 : real server
How is it possible ?
I have a problem at the moment, where the client wants to be able to type in a custom algebraic formula with add/minus operators, and then to have this interpreted, so that the related datasets are then added and returned as a single dataset.
An example would be having a formula stored of [a] + [b] - [c]
and if I were to write the SQL to apply that formula, I might write something like (let's assume 1:1 relationships with the ID's)
select a.a + b.b - c.c as [result]
from z
inner join tblA a on z.id = a.id
inner join tblB b on z.id = b.id
inner join tblC c on z.id = c.id
The formula can change though, maybe things like:
[a] + [b] + [c] + [d]
[a] + [b]
The developer before me wrote something SQL-based where they parsed the string and assigned each value of the formula as either positive or negative (e.g A is positive, B is positive, C is negative, now sum the datasets to get the result), and then created one large table of values then summed them. This does (kind of) work, I'm just contemplating potential alternatives, as it is quite a slow process, and feels like it is quite convoluted, when I get into the details. If I were to do something like this in SQL, I'd normally want each part of the expression to be a column, and then to just apply the operators, but because the formula can change, then the SQL would need to be somehow dynamic for this approach.

I am pretty new to reporting software and I was just wondering in reporting services 2005 when working with multiple datasets and data connection string in order to populate text boxes if the data is a number it is prefixed with SUM at the start of the expression and if it is text it is prefixed with FIRST even though it is just for one value.
I was wondering if this is normal or have I messed up somewhere?

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Is this an intrinsic issue?
My source file is showing column 10 as string. My destination table is datetime. I am using the derived transformation with a conditional statement. How do I convert the value from string to date. Everywhere I try the (DT_DATE) I get an error.

I want to evaluate the first 3 characters of the string as numbers.

Any data that is greater than 1.99, I want to make the background dark red, anything else including nulls, zebra formatting. I have the following expression built so far and it appears to work, except when the value is null. If the value is null, it leaves the background color white.

I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".

I have a child package where the ConnectionString property of a Connection Manager is set by a Parent Package Variable Configuration. I set up a script task that brings up a message box with the value of the ConnectionString property right before the dataflow task.
MessageBox.Show(Dts.Connections["CPU_*"].ConnectionString.ToString());When I run the parent package, the message box shows that the connection string is changing with every iteration, but in the dataflow it always draws the data from the same source.
The connection manager is an ADO.Net type, RetainSameConnection is set to False, and I've been researching this for days.
(Update 2/23/2015): To make this stranger, when I look at the diagnostic logs, they tell me that when the new connections are being opened they are using the new connection strings.

I have a super simple package that inserts x000's of rows into a temporary table. The data source is a file that the user will upload. I need to be able to tell the package what file to upload. I'm thinking the simplest thing would be to edit the connectionString property of the SourceConnectionFlatFile at runtime. Is this possible? What form should the file path be in (UNC, other)? And, are there any other considerations I should be aware of?

I hope that I am just missing a step in the process somewhere. I have established a string variable called DatabaseServer and another called DatabaseName. In the OLE DB connectionstring expression I have the following:

My understanding is that changing the variable from SERVERA to SERVERB should repoint the connection. (Test to pre-production to production in my current promotion environment.) This should also take effect in any dataflow task using the database connection above right? When I try to repoint the server variable (and only the server variable) I am either a.)throwing errors saying the original connection cannot be found in the data flow task, or b.)the job appears to be processing fine, but the repoint did not take place and data is still flowing to the original server.
Can anyone offer suggestions as to what I am missing?
The properties values in the DB connection:
ConnectionManagerType is OLEDB
DataSourceID is blank
DelayValidation is False (Setting to true changes nothing in my test)
Expression for ConnectionString is (see above)

I have one procedure that gets executed many times per day(thousands at least). I consistently get blocking in my database, as users compile this stored procedure. How can I keep this from recompiling all the time, and bogging down my database? I tried the keep plan option in the portion of the code that uses tembdb, and that doesn't work. thanks.

Hello everyone,
Is there a way in order to execute a subscribed report based on a certain criteria?
For example, let's say send a report to users when data exist on the report else if no data is returned by the query
executed by the report then it will not send the report to users.
My current situation here is that users tend to say that this should not happen, since no pertinent information is contained in the report, why would they receive email with blank data in it.
Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

When a stored proc is executed in SQL server 2000, it is holding a EXCLUSIVE [COMPILE] lock on the proc and the proc os getting recompiled every time it is executed. This is happening with most of the procs that are called from this proc. When multiple users are executing the same process they are having to wait until the other users are done compiling the procs. The lapse time is growing exponentially with multiple users.
I have looked at several places to find a solution for this. Microsoft Articles Q243586 and Q263889 have provided me with some options; but at this point, I need a miracle.
All these procs users temp tables. I have got the code changed to replace most of them with Table datatypes (on SQL2K only) . Some of them still need to use temp tables as they are cross referenced by multiple procs.
I am hopeful, there is some one out there who has dealt with this kind of situations before. Any ideas/sugessions are greatly appreciated..

This morning one of our jobs failed, so I eventually ran the SSIS package manually and found the flow "hanging" at a script task. The fix was to open the script in design mode and hit Save, which I believe compiles the code. Then the package ran as it has normally for several months.
There was a recent Windows update run on this server. I don't know what was updated, as it was the DBA that did that. It seems possible that a .NET framework update would cause this problem, does anyone have any thoughts on this or anything else causing this?
Given the extent of some SSIS environments, and ours is pretty extensive, this could be a real pain to go in and manually recompile each and every script task.

I have 2 GB of RAM und over 15 GB of free space on my disk. Thus, there should be anough space to save the package.
What should I do to resolve this problem? It seems to be a bug.

So, my requirement is, I should be able to create a SSIS package in English and then should be able to compile or translate it into Japanese so that my Japanese SME can understand the package. actually i try to create a native c++ desktop-application that will have to access a SQL CE 3.1 db-file over OLE DB. For that purpose i want to use the same self written wrapper class(for the OLE DB stuff) that i use for a native WM2003 application that creates the db files to be accessed on the desktop application.
The WM2003 application including my wrapper class compiles fine with eVC++ 4.0.
But now with VS 2005 including the same class i got this compile error: "Redefinition of class IRowsetBookmark". I have to add that i used the application wizard to generate a mfc sdi application with database support(ODBC is used in this app, too).
I figured out that in the following 2 inlcuded files IRowsetBookmark is defined:
1)The manually included "ssceoledb30.h" in my wrapper class.
2)The probably from the application wizard included "oledb.h" (in "Microsoft Visual Studio 8VCPlatformSDKInclude")
My workaround for the moment is to comment the class definition in the file "ssceoledb30.h" out because i don't use this OLE DB interface in my wrapper class. But i don't think that this is the way that microsoft supposed to go.
Does anybody had this problem and solved it other way than simply comment one of the class definition out?
I would appreciate it when someone out there knows the answer and could tell me.

I am trying to use a simple BEGIN TRY and END TRY in my SP. It is giving a compile time error such as
Line 13: Incorrect syntax near 'try'.
Why is this, can somebody help me out. Yes i am sure it is SQL Server 2005 on my machine.
The stored procedure, below, results in this error when I try to compile...
Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Procedure InsertImportedReportData, Line 69
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'ORDER'.
However the select statement itself runs perfectly well as a query, no errors.
The T-SQL manual says you can't use the keywords COMPUTE, COMPUTE BY, FOR BROWSE, and INTO in a cursor select statement, but nothing about plain old ORDER BYs.
What gives with this?

Ii'm running the application using the sql SDK version , i'm having trouble openning the connection. my connection string is:

Windows 2000
Visual Studio 2005
and SQLServer 2005.
I'm new to VS 2005
I'm using the following code for connection

it is giving the error as 'Cann't do the connection since user id cann't be null
It is not exact words of the error message.
following code is working fine with the SQL Server 2003 but not with SQL Server 2005.
