Configuring SSRS Datasources With Different Domain Credentials
Dec 17, 2007
We are having our SSRS (Sql Server Reporting Services) Servers deployed in Domain1 to connect to the Domain1 data sources. Now, when we configure the SSRS datasources (which is in Domain1) to run under €œDomain2/User€? credentials , it€™s taking 60 minutes to render a report whereas when we configure the SSRS datasources to run under €œDomain1/User€? account it€™s taking only 5 seconds.
I would like to know €œWhy there is a latency difference while configuring the SSRS data sources with different domain credentials (Domain1Domain2)?€?
Any pointers to Support KB or any other related articles would be really great.

Get this when selecting parameter value in Report Manager
Report is working fine in preview
Up to me, it has nothing to do with credentials
I have some analysis server reports.
I have a single value report parameter, the report runs fine with the default value, when I select another value than the default one, I get above message immediately.
I got the error since I rebuild the report with SP2 CTP.
Strange thing is that the other single value parameter of the report works fine (year)
And that I get the error also with other reports, and on the same dimension (Organisation)
And that I do not have the error when I change the parameter to multi-value (but as the report is not written for multiple values...)
MDX queries are as follows:
SELECT NON EMPTY { KPIValue("KPINewBiz"), KPIGoal("KPINewBiz"), KPIStatus("KPINewBiz"), KPITrend("KPINewBiz") } ON COLUMNS,
NONEMPTY
([Reps].[Organisation].[Organisation].ALLMEMBERS
*[Reps].[Rep].[Rep].ALLMEMBERS
*[Date].[Year].[Year].ALLMEMBERS
*[Date].[Month].[Month].ALLMEMBERS
,[Measures].[Gross Sales]
)
DIMENSION PROPERTIES MEMBER_CAPTION, MEMBER_UNIQUE_NAME ON ROWS
FROM ( SELECT ( STRTOSET(@ByYear, CONSTRAINED) ) ON COLUMNS FROM ( SELECT ( STRTOSET(@ByOrganisation, CONSTRAINED) ) ON COLUMNS FROM [Sales])) CELL PROPERTIES VALUE, BACK_COLOR, FORE_COLOR, FORMATTED_VALUE, FORMAT_STRING, FONT_NAME, FONT_SIZE, FONT_FLAGS
WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS '[Reps].[Organisation].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION' MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterValue] AS '[Reps].[Organisation].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME' MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterLevel] AS '[Reps].[Organisation].CURRENTMEMBER.LEVEL.ORDINAL' SELECT {[Measures].[ParameterCaption], [Measures].[ParameterValue], [Measures].[ParameterLevel]} ON COLUMNS ,
NONEMPTY([Reps].[Organisation].[Organisation].ALLMEMBERS,[Measures].[Gross Sales]) ON ROWS FROM [Sales]
WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS '[Date].[Year].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION' MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterValue] AS '[Date].[Year].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME' MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterLevel] AS '[Date].[Year].CURRENTMEMBER.LEVEL.ORDINAL' SELECT {[Measures].[ParameterCaption], [Measures].[ParameterValue], [Measures].[ParameterLevel]} ON COLUMNS , NONEMPTY([Date].[Year].[Year].ALLMEMBERS,[Measures].[Gross Sales]) ON ROWS FROM [Sales]
Discovered something else that is very strange, you change the value of the parameter, you get the error, you hit the back button, and you can run the report with the new parameter
Did one more test, changed the order of the parameters, is now going wrong on the other parameter, Year.
So, it is always on the first parameter.
Correction, I have put a multi-value parameter as first, I still have the problem, it is always on the first single value parameter
I have the same problem.

Any fix for the seemingly random sort order of the variables in the dropdown list when configuring parameters and connection managers in the SSISDB catalog?
I imported all of our connection strings into an environment (about 200 of them). They were inserted in alpha order and the ID values within the internal.environment_variables table shows them in order as well, by ID and by name.
When I run profiler and capture the command that retrieves them and run it in ssms they are in order but in the dropdown they seem random.
There are no values within any of the tables that accounts for the order they are in.
If a package has 5 connections you need to go through the unsorted list 5 times to find them.
Sometimes you get lucky and they are in the first 20 or so.
I know I can write a script, just wondering if there is a fix for the sorting.

In the SSMS, is it possible to allow a user to log into the DB engine using alternate Domain credentials. There are fields that allow you to log in with SQL credentials but I don't see a way to do it with Doman credentials. It's always passthrough authentication.

I using MS SQLServer as a secure method of setting up system tasks andprocesses for automated running. The intent is that all logins (idsand passwords) are in a secure database table and are not sittingaround in batch files on the server. Some of the tasks make use of network authentication, and this is wherethe problem arises. If I execute the command line from within SQLServer (via xp_cmdshell),I get an error that says that the userid is missing. If I execute thatsame command vid the CMD window, it works. It appears that the shell that xp_cmdshell kicks off does not inheritthe domain authentication.Aside from questions on why I am doing things this way as opposed tousing the windows scheduler or other tools, what do I need to do tomake sure that my domain credentials are passed?

This is a two part question. We are currently using the ODBC method SQLConnect to connect to an existing DSN:
m_retcode = SQLConnect(
m_hDbc,
(SQLTCHAR*)datasource,
(SWORD)_tcslen(datasource),
(SQLTCHAR*)username,
(SWORD)_tcslen(username),
(SQLTCHAR*)password,
(SWORD)_tcslen(password) );
using a SQL user created for that purpose (and yes the password is encrypted elsewhere). I have had a request to be able to use a Windows domain account in the same setting however it does not appear that i can simply enter either "domainusername" or "username" (SQL Server and the login machine are in the same domain.
Is it possible to accomplish this with this function or should I use a different routine to obtain a connection? How would I accomplish this if I instead wanted to use integrated login?
The "client" is running Windows XP, 2000, 2003, or Vista (Business). The database server is running SQL 200 or 2005 on Windows 2003 Server (or possibly Windows 2000 Server).
Hope this description is not too murky.
Cheers,
Lyman Hurd

is there a way to bring in oracle and sql tables into the same report and join them together on common fields? also, if this is possible, i am trying to join them in the native UI and not the generic query designer mode.
i am hoping that through fully qualifying the tables as you bring them in, that this may be possible.
any suggesions would be greatly appreciated...
thanks!

I didn't know exactly which forum to post this in, so if I need to post it into another one, please let me know. Also, I have absolutely no SQL or DB experience. I am learning as I go.
The Situation:
I created a virtual network for my company which included MS CRM, which uses SQL Server 2005. Everything was working fine until today. My company asked me to make a change to the domain name, as we are changing company names. I followed the processes through microsoft's documentation that I found online. The rename went fine. Since then, we can no longer access CRM. When I run the environment checks, it gets hung up on the SQL Server components. It says that it can't confirm the MSSQLSERVER service is running (it is) and it can't connect to the database. As best as I can tell, the database is looking for the old domain name, which doesn't exist. How do I edit or configure the existing database to reflect the new domain name. It's important to do this as we have data in that database that we need to access. Any help in this matter is very much appreciated!!!

Attempting to link Access 2003 to SQL 2005, there is something keeping from doing so.
1 I setup the instance as sqlexpress.
2 I have a database shell there also.
3 It connects when I start the instance service.
4 My remote connections are configured to handle TCP/IP & Named Pipes.
Not in this order, but you get the idea. Now that I have these in place, I went first to the Access 2003 database to link the tables to this. When I came accross trouble in the form of need for a DSN to the domain for the things I created above.
In attempting to create one that looked functional, I came back to the same step. But, unsuccessful to link the tables again because browsing to that domain does not even show that particular file. This is the problem.
I do believe that once I am able to select a DSN, I will have a "healthy baby connection". I will then be the proud father of my first Server-side database setup!!!! But I am trying to get over these labor pains.

Hi,
I have got a quistion in regards to SQL Server Reporting Services 2005. We're currently using the SSRS in one of our applciations with 20+ reports. We need to deplaoy 2 instances of an applciation: Test and Production. These applcaitions are running off two different databases in SQL Server [DBName]_Test and [DBName]_Live. So far all of our reports have been written to use a shared datasource. This worked fine untill we had to deploy a Live instance of the application, where the shared datasource is overwritten with the live one.
Now we have manually created a new shared datasource called [DataSource]_Live. However, whenever we need to redeploy the reports from visual studio, we then have to go though each report and point it to a correct datasource. This is extremly manual process - and takes up a lot of time...
Surely there must be an easier way around this (without duplicating the reporting project in VS.NET / or having to modify the datasource fr each report manually each time)?
Thanks in advance,
Nick Goloborodko

In the MSDN white paper "Microsoft .NET Data Provider for mySAP Business Suite", on page 2, it shows an example of calling a RFC with a variable. Specifically, it states "To execute this statement, you must create a SAPParameter object with the name @var1, specify its value, and add the new object to the SAPCommand object corresponding to the query." How do I create a SAPParameter object?

Hi,
We are developing a windows application (Distributed via ClickOnce) and hosting the
SqlServer 2005 at our company. Now, we need to add reporting services to our application
and I've stumbled upon some problems.
First off, each customer has their own database on the same SqlServer instance. What
I would want, and need guidance for, is the following..
1. I want each customer to be able to use the Report Builder to login and access a
model only targeted against their database (maybe using some sort of sql user account?).
2. I want each customer to be able to login to Report Manager and save/edit their
own reports targeted solely for their database.
3. If possible, is there a way to script this for easy creation when we acquire a new customer.
4. If this is not at all possible, what other solutions are there out there?
Kind Regards,
Robert

Then I ran the SSRS configuration wizard and tried to configure the SSRS service to create a report server database by using a SQL Alias.
It connects to the DB fine but at the last step it gives an error saying no such host. How to configure SSRS Service when they used an alias for the sql server?

I am trying to automate the setup of SQL server 2014 Standard edition with SSRS. To avoid SSRS being setup using the default port 80 for the webservice and report manager url's, I've chosen to install SQL server with the setting RSINSTALLMODE="FilesOnlyMode" and then use powershell to do the final setup steps. To setup the ReportServer database, I use the "GenerateDatabaseCreationScript" method available in the "MSReportServer_ Configuration Setting" class.
This succeeds without problems however when I use my browser to connect to the web service or report manager url's, I get a "rsInvalid Report Server Database" and a "rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable " error, respectively.Running the stored procedure named GetDbVersion in the ReportServer database returns "C.0.9.45". If I delete the ReportServer database and then recreate it database manually with the Report Services Configuration manager, the same stored procedure returns "162".
So it seems to me there's a problem with the GenerateDatabaseCreationScript but I can't find any information on this. How can I automate the setup of SSRS and ensure it does not use port 80? There are many manual solutions involving multi-step GUI solutions but the key for me is to automate this with powershell which doesn't appear to be possible.

we have problems with our SQL Reporting Service 2012 (SSRS) server . We have setup Kerberos delegation between SSRS and the database server (SQL Server Always-on cluster) so users are authenticated down to the database. The issue occurs from time to time that SSRS loses the ability to delegate the user credentials to the database. At this point in time the Report Server logs contain rejected database connections because of ANONYMOUS logon. After restarting SSRS the problem is gone.

I have created a new SSRS Server and done all of the basic security setup for the site but I am having trouble with client machine access...At first I had an issue with being able to access report manager from any client and ended up having to shut off windows authentication on the client IE settings to get it to work. Now I am trying to run Report Builder from a client machine and it will not download. The client machine is on the same domain and my user id is set as an administrator within SSRS and as a local admin on the 2008 server.Â
I had the thought that without windows auth in the browser maybe it can't permit me access to the application but if I turn it on I can't get to it to download it. I have set Full Control rights to the folder as well. Most of the info out there is for 2005 and that uses IIS to host the pages where as 2008 does not. Here is the details of the error:

We have an existing SSRS server, and have just created a new child domain. We'll be migrating users from the parent to the child, and want to add the users of that new domain with access to SSRS. In the parent domain they are able to access, but after migration with the child domain account, they cannot.
I have added the group CHILDDomain Users with a system user role on SSRS, and PARENTDomain Users was already there.
Is there any additional step I should/could take to get this active?

Hi,
We have the followoing:
-A "master domain" AD, a "sub domain" AD, a trust relationship between the two (sub trust master)
-A sql server 2005 on a win server 2003 in "sub domain" AD
-A linked server to "sub domain" AD
-A linked server login using a "sub domain" admin acccount
-A view to this linked server
-A grant on masterDomain/Domain Users to the database
-A grant on subDomain/Domain Users to the database
-We want all connections done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".
Queries on the view work fine using "sub domain" user accounts.
Queries on the view fail using "master domain" user accounts (including master domain admin accounts)
"Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation."
All connections are done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".
Can we establish cross domain connectivity with "Windows Authentication" ?
Below are details of the implementation:
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT *
FROM OPENQUERY(ADSI,
'SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn (etc...)
FROM ''LDAP://OU=PEOPLE,DC=subDomain,DC=com''
WHERE objectCategory = ''Person'' AND objectClass = ''user'' ')
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname ='ADSI', @useself='false',
@rmtuser='subDomainAdminAccnt', @rmtpassword='sunDomainAdminAccntPassword';
In SQL Server Mngt Studio in Server Objects/Linked Servers/Providers/ ADSI properties security tab I have:
"connections will: <be made using this security context> Remote login:'subDomainAdminAccnt' With password: 'subDomainAdminAccntPassword'
Error:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

I have a root domain and child domain.
After using ADMT to migrate the domain user or group into the root domain, when I use enterprise manager to try and change the permissions allocated to that domain user/group, i get the 'Error 15401 NT user or Group not found'.
This is a correct error as the user is now in the root domain, however sql (in sysxlogins) still thinks its in the child domain.
Is there a simpler way, other than collecting the users permissions, deleting the user from SQL then adding back in with the correct domainusername format, then adding the permissions back?
I tried renaming the 'name' in sysxlogins (not recommended) and while that worked, whenever I tried to add the migrated user to another database, the login name was missing and would not resolve.
I believe it is something to do with the SID not matching.
Any ideas on how to fix this ?

we recently migrated from our in-house domain to the Enterprise domain. Everything went smooth except for the fact that I can no longer accept my dBs using my SA or my domain admin account. There is only 1 account I can get into the management studio with but it has no admin privileges, so I can't make any  password changes or add accounts. I don't have a test environment so kind of hesitant to experiment with our production system.

I have the connection managers setup to reference the datasource and can see the connection manager pointing to the new database but when I run a task by right clicking on it and choosing execute task it calls the stored procedure in the old database. I know it is doing this because I renamed the stored procedure in the old database and the task errored out saying it could not find the stored procedure. Hello,
I am currently working with SQL 2005 Reporting Services and MS Visual studio 2005.
In my SQL server I have data about organizations, so that each organization's data is stored in an individual database.
In addition, the number of organizations/databases is variable. I know the number of organizations and the name of each one (that it agrees with the name of its database)
because there is a database (organizationsDB) with a table (organizationsTB) containing the list of the organizations.
So, It would be possible to create a report containing a summary of each organization? .... for example a table in which each row contains data of each organization.
Could you give me any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I have discovered some shortcomings in the way inline table valued function parameters are treated in the OLEDB datasource. You can select the user designed function ine the Generic Query Builder and test it with the required parameters. However when you attempt to set up the parameters for the result ing SQL Command Text you get and error message to the effect that the parameters cannot be retrieved from the datasource. Once again this is disappointing because Report Services seems to deal with the parameters perfectly well.

Hi,
I have to design a tabular report where the data in all the columns of the table comes from the cube, but for one column where the data comes from the ODS table.
Could anyone please let me know if it is possible to combine the results of the query from a cube with query from an ODS table and display together in a single report?
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated
Thanks.
