Configuring Mail For SQL Server Agent - Problem With Exchange And Outlook On Same Machine?

Jul 23, 2005

I would like to configure e-mail alerts on my SQL Server 2000 box.
However, we also run Exchange on the same machine. I've been told there
could be conflicts/issues having Outlook on the same machine as
Exchange; and apparently, one needs Outlook to configure a mail profile
for SQL Server Agent.

Is there, in fact, anything to worry about? If so, are there any
work-arounds beside moving Exchange to another server? (we've only got
one server, so this is not an option for us at this time).
Thanks.

SQL AGENT MAIL Not Using Exchange

Oct 27, 2000

I setup a domain user account and e-mail account for the sql agent. When I want the agent to mail me a message
when something happens it puts it in the out box but does not send until I pull up the outlook express and ping the server to send recieve.
If I don't have outlook express running in the taskbar, it won't send the message at all. The e-mail is configured as an internet mail component.
Any suggestions??

Agent Mail / Outlook 2003 Catch 22

Jan 30, 2006

I've just installed and configured outlook 2003 with sql agent mail and I've come across a strange conundrum: messages from agent mail are not actually sent unless the outlook client is open, but the default mail folder is locked by agent when agent is started, thus preventing outlook 2003 from opening. If I try things the other way - opening the client and then configuring/restarting agent mail - then agent mail can't access the default mail folder because the client has it locked.

There doesn't seem to be any way to win here.

Anyone come across this issue and found a workaround?

Sql Server Agent And Outlook Problems

Jan 22, 2001

Just recently my SQL server agent has been causing problems with my Outlook. When the Agent is started, it causes all processes on Outlook to hang. As soon as I stop the Agent, then Outlook works just fine again. Does anyone know a possible cause for this. Up until a couple days ago things were working just fine, and then this problem seems to have popped out of nowhere.

Want To Link SQL Server DB To MS Exchange E-Mail-Address Data

Mar 1, 2002

Hi all,
I'd like to link a SQL Server database / table to Microsoft Exchange Server E-Mail-Address data, for an Employee Directory project.

I've read a little about "Web Store", a little about ExOLEDB, but I've come across nothing along practical lines. I.e., I still don't know where to begin!

For example the "Web Store" should be created on the SQL server, but how do you create it? Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

SQL Mail And Exchange Question?

Jul 9, 2001

Hey All,

Is there any way to run SQL Mail with exchange CLOSED? Keeping Exchange always minimized seems rather unneedy, inexperienced developers might just have the tendency to close it. Is there any way to avoid that?

Also, can SQL Mail be configured with something else besides Exchange?

Thanks a bunch!

Sql Mail And Outlook 2000

Oct 10, 2000

I'm trying to set up Sql Mail using Outlook 2000 and the only way I can get a message sent is to have the Outlook client open at the time I start Sql Mail. Sql Mail will start regardless of the profile chosen even if it is blank, but if the Outlook client was not running at the time I started Sql Mail then while executing xp_sendmail I get "Server: Msg 17914, Level 18, State 1, Line 0 Unknown recipient: Parameter '@recipients', recipient 'jcorriveau@homeruns.com'"

Regardless of the Outlook client status or profile setup when performing a MAPI profile test, <SQL MAIL><Properties><Test>, I receive "SQL-DMO(ODBC SQLState: 42000) Error 22030: A MAPI error(error number 273) occurred.:Unable to get the default MAPI Message Store due to MAPI error 273:The information store could not be opened."

I've setup Sql Mail and Outlook 97/98 clients in the past and have not had to have the client open when starting Sql Mail. I've read most of the technet and knowledge base articles and the only ref I can find to this problem is a note in Q248431 "note that outlook 2000 or another configured MAPI client must be started before xp_startmail is executed." Was this the case in Outlook 97/98?

The Exchange server is in another domain. I think it's version 5.5. I'm using my domain account and profile to setup Sql Mail. I can send and receive mail fine using Outlook 2000. There is a Password dialog box that appears when starting the Outlook client prompting for User Name, Domain Name, and Password. I have not been able to create a profile that gets around this dialog box. Is this an Exchange server setting? If so, is it a server wide setting or can it be disabled per mail account?

Any help with this will be appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Database Mail And MS Exchange

Oct 30, 2007

I have set up database mail in SQL 2005. We have an MS Exchange group that is alerted when SQL jobs fail.
Two things ;
i) I can't seem to be able to use Exchange mail Groups. If I specify the group name SQL returns ;

The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 1 (2007-10-30T15:40:39). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (The specified string is not in the form required for an e-mail address.).
If Exchange cannot be used in the way that Outlook did then how can we alert a group of users about SQL job failures ?

Therefore I tried specifiying an indiviual email address rather than a group ;

- sending a test message (right click database mail) using the full single email address works fine.
- sp_send_dbmail using the full single email address is also fine.

ii) When a job fails the notifications do not seem to work. The Job history log just reports ;
NOTE: Failed to notify 'Operator Name ' via email.
The SQL Error log reports ;
Message
[264] An attempt was made to send an email when no email session has been established

However sysmail_help_status_sp indicates that database mail has started.
The job fails to notify the operator and in this case it is a single email address.

Anybody got any suggestions, (thanks in advance) ?

Notes Mail: Exchange Profile Not Found!! HELP PLEASE!!

Feb 3, 2000

I saw from SWYNK that you were able to set up SQL Mail using Lotus
Notes. I tried following the post by Edward Alexander but got into some trouble:

We were using MAPI to get to Notes Mail.

1. We know that MAPI works because we were able to send mail by
a. using the exchange client (Windows Messaging client)
b. using VB script to send a message with MAPI.Session

The problem is that SQL server cannot see the Exchange Profile that was defined on the SQL box.

SQL Mail - Configuring

Sep 27, 2006

wasnt sure which forum to put this in - so i'll attempt here!

i have been trying to setup SQLMail in SQL2000 but have been having a few problems

i have created an Outlook MAPI profile for SQL to use. i have tested the profile and it is sending emails - the profile was created using the correct user which has local admin privileges and also a domain account

i then assigned this profile to SQLMail within Enterprise manager and clicked Test. this completed successfully stating it was able to start & stop a MAPI session.

so i assumed that was all thats needed??

through Query Analyzer i run a simple test

EXEC xp_sendmail 'Craig.Gamble@<mydomain>.com' 'The DB is full'

i get a success message saying SQL mail sent. but it doesnt appear to send anything? i never recieve anything. The sent items does not contain anything and even when checking the actual Exchange server there is no sign of any mail being sent

i also checked the SQL account permissions to make sure it could access the Exchange Server using the

EXEC xp_cmdshell 'NET USE \EnterpriseIPC$' and again this returned success

so now im stumped!

is there anything else i can check to see where or what its supposedly sending??

any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Craig

SQL Server Agent + SQL Mail

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I've been able to successfully configure SQL Server Agent to sendnotification emails to an appropriate Operator in the event of an alertbeing fired. This all works fine on one condition - that Outlook clientis running on the server. If Outlook is not running the alerts still be fired (i.e. the OccuranceRate still increases as and when expected), but the emails beinggenerated will not be sent until the next time Outlook is opened.Clearly it's unwise to rely on Outlook being open on the server at alltimes, so I was wondering if anyone knows of a workaround to ensurethese emails are processed immediately?I'm using SQL Server 2000 SP4 and Outlook 2003.thanks,Bob.

DTS - SQL Server Agent Mail Issue

Mar 24, 2006

Hi,

Wondering if anyone there can tell me what I'm doing wrong (and please be gentle as I'm not at all techy).

I have a DTS scheduled on the Server Agent to run, and at the end it is to send a mail to notify me and several others that it has completed. Trouble is, it runs but doesn't send the mail.

However if I execute the DTS manually it does send the mail.

I have a idea it might be to do with the Profile in SQL Mail in Server Settings on the Properties of the server, but have no idea how to correct this.
Can anybody help?

Configuring Sql Job Agent For SSIS - Issues

Jun 16, 2006

Hi,

I have created a package which extracts data from src table to dest table. src and dest are available in test database.Another database test1 is available which has only src table.

Now I have created package level variables for source and connection string.if both are test database then data from test.src - > test.dest otherwise if source is test1 then test1.src = test.dest.

All these things worked fine from Business Intelligent studio. But when I want to configure the same from sql Job Agent, it fails . It reports as Invalid Command Iine parameters.

In Job Step I have given Package source as FileSystem, Package as physical path.In Set Values Property Path = /MyTest.source; Value = Data Source=VENUS;Initial Catalog=Test1;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Auto Translate=False;

Please shed some light on this issue.

Thanks

SQL Server 2005 Database Mail And Agent Error

Feb 9, 2006

Hello, hoping someone might be able to help.

I've set up Database Mail on an instance of 2005 and the test mail works just fine. However, when testing a job (notify on fail, success, whatever) the mail fails to send. Job History last information reads NOTE: Failed to notify 'My Name' via email.

Checked out the Database Mail logs - nothing interesting.

Restarted the Agent service and then checked out the current Agent Log. Found message:

[260] Unable to start mail session (reason: No mail profile defined).

The 'DatabaseMailProfile' key is most certainly defined in the Registry
(at 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'SOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1SQLServerAgent')

I'm at a loss...why is it telling me no mail profile defined?
I'd be most grateful for any help if anybody else has run across this problem.

Cheers,
Megan

SQL Server Agent &> General Tab &> Mail Session Is Greyed Out ??

Feb 22, 2004

Hi All,

Great forum y'all have going here.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Enterprise Manager:
I have setup and 'sucessfully tested a MAPI session' with a mail profile via support services > sql mail. That works fine, however in sql server agent properties the mail session section on the first general tab appears to be greyed out.

scenario is:
Windows Server 2003 SBS edition
SQL Server 2000 SP3
Exchange Server 2003 is also running on the server, with Outlook 2003 client (so i suspect side chaining issue).

Any help appreciated! did not have any luck googling or using microsoft KB.
