We have a 64-bit VM server running SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server on this particular VM server has 6 local instances installed. On the Management Studio logon screen I can type the full name of the local instance and connect to it, however if I press the drop down in the Server name field, choose Browse and select the Local Servers tab there is nothing listed under Database Engines.
Any idea why the 6 local instances don't show up under Database Engines? This is preventing me from installing a vendor application because their installer looks for local SQL Server instances on this server, but if SQL Server won't even show the local instances then the installer doesn't see them either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig

Hi,
I have a problem. While creating login for a single table in a database we know the public role is given by default.
I have use to disabled all public priviledges by-
Use northwind
revoke all from public
executing through query Analyser.
And after creating a role named "reception" and giving the priviledges of "select' to customer table by ticking and assigning that role to the login I get my login.
But using that login When I login,I can use select to see customer table.
And except that nothing is allowed.
But when i write
use pubs
select * from sales
I get the entire results.
Plz suggest me a way to block everything except the "select" of customer table.
Thanks!!

Hello Everyone,
I appear to be doing something wrong. When I
set my Table for Unrestricted File Growth and
save it, When I go back and look at the settings
it is set back to restricted file growth.
It seems to me if you set any settings and apply
and/or save it. Should it not keep that setting.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

We have "unrestricted" size of log file on model database, but for some reason, all newly created databases have "restricted" sizing.
After taking a look at this, it appears that SQL Server changes the "Unrestricted" file growth setting specified on the log file in the model database to "restricted to 2 TB". This size is the maximum allowed for log files by SQL Server 2005, so this means the settings are identical?

Scenario:
SQL Server 2005 SP2.
SQL Server has only Windows Authentication Mode.
SQL server 'xp_cmdshell' option has been disabled by surface area configuration.
A database 'CN01' has been created
I have created a schema 'Executables' that contains stored procedures to access data in 'CN01'.
I have create a database role 'db_procexecutor' with execution permission on schema 'Executables'.
I have created a group 'CN01-Users' in Active Directory.
I have created a login 'CN01-Users' wich has been asigned 'db_procexecutor' role in 'CN01' database.
Problem:
I want a user member of AD group 'CN01-Users' to execute a Stored Procedure in 'CN01' database, (in 'Executables' schema) wich needs access to 'xp_cmdshell' to write a file in OS through bcp command.
The following SP works only assigning 'sysadmin' role to 'CN01-Users'.
For security reasons, I don't want to assign 'sysadmin' role to 'CN01-Users', neither assign permissions on Master.
I want the SP to work in the security scenario described earlier.
Should I use procedure signing ? ... If so, please describe step by step.
Sample SP:
EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE
EXEC sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell', 1
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE
exec xp_cmdshell 'bcp "SELECT Column FROM CN01.dbo.table" queryout C: able.txt -T -c'
EXEC sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell', 0
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE
EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 0
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE
Thank you !

Just released small piece of software with SQL Compact Edition, version 3, dll files distributed with the application.
Now feedback from 2 people suffering an error message as follows:
SQL Mobile usage is restricted on this platform. To use SQL Mobile, you must install SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, or the Tablet PC SKU.
Both using XP under Admin accounts.
My own testing did throw up this error prior to release, but only when I tried to run the program as a Limited User. I was unable to find out why. Running the program under an Administrator account never produced this error message.
The test-bed was a fresh install of XP, SP 2, running within VMware. An Administrator account was set up. No development software was installed, nor anything to do with SQL. I tried to make it a clean environment to be used by a non-technical user.
Any insights would be most appreciated.

I restored a sql server database today. There is a problem though. In SQL server, right next to the name of the database are the words "Restricted User". Their seem to be some limitations on my access to this database now as I am not able to run some of my C# code against the database. How can I fix this in SQL server so that I am not a Restriced user.
Example of what I am talking about. In SQL server my database is named Gorlaz. Just to the left of this is a yellow Icon that represents the database "Gorlaz". For illustration purposes I will use the character "$" to substitute for the yellow database icon. So this is how it reads in SQL server management studio.
$Gorlaz(Restricted User)

Secondary replica database(setup in async mode) of AlwaysON went in "restricted mode" during weekly reindex operation.
So I have tried below steps
1) Executed following statement on the same secondary replica database where the issue exists
alter database <DBNAME> set multi_user with rollback immediate
but it failed with the error saying "The operation cannot be performed on database "dbname" because it is involved in a database mirroring session or an availability group. Some operations are not allowed on a database that is participating in a database mirroring session or in an availability group. ALTER DATABASE statement failed."
2) Primary database is multi_user but still tried following command on primary replia database(thinking it will replicate)
alter database <DBNAME> set multi_user
but no luck. The secondary alwaysON database shows (synchronizing) as the alwaysON is set in async mode but the command doesn't replicate across secondary
so we are left with the only option to re-setup alwaysON but I want to avoid it as database size is huge..
any other options or am I missing anything?

Hello--
We're running into an issue where analysts are having problems obtaining lift charts (via the Mining Accuracy Chart UI available in the Visual Studio Analysis Services project) and performing prediction (via the Mining Model Prediction UI).
The issue seems to be related to the underlying analyst security model. Note that this post is related to:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=924641&SiteID=1
Analysts that work on the same problem will only have access to:
- A sandbox relational database (which contains views into the same source database). The analyst is db_owner of the sandbox database, so she/he can create data transformations required, etc. The sandbox database contains views to the source database, but the analyst only has read-access to the specific data elements needed from the source DB. So, they are very restricted w.r.t. the source database, but are db_owners of their sandbox relational databases. Note that the analyst will connect to he database via Windows Authentication.
- An Analysis Services sandbox database to use for their modeling, etc. In this AS sandbox db, we've created a role called "Administrator" and checked the permissions: Full control (Administrator), Process database, and Read definition. The analyst's windows account is the "user" associated with this role.
Also, in this situation, the SQL Server 2005 Relational Engine and Analysis Services are running on a single machine. The goal of this security model is to provide analysts with the ability to work in their "workspaces" (both SQL and AS), but not to see other analysts work, etc.
Under this model, Analysts are able to deploy mining models when the Data Source object that points to their relational "sandbox" DB is set-up with "Impersonation Information" = "Use a specific user name and password", where the Analyst provides their domain account information.
But, when trying to build a lift chart using the same data source view objects that were used to successfully train the model, the following error is occurring consistently:
Window Title: "Loading Mining Accuracy Chart"
Window Text: "Failed to execute the query due to the following error: Execution of the managed stored rocedure GenerateLiftTableUsingDatasource failed with the following error: Exception has been thrown by the target of invocation. Either '<domain><login>' user does not have permission to access the '' object, or the object does not exist. Errors in the high-level relational engine. A connection could not be made to the data source specified in the query. Errors in the high-level relational engine. A connection could not be made to the data source specified in the query.."
Since the Analyst was able to build the model with her/his given '<domain><login>' credentials, it is puzzling why the lift chart is failing.
Thanks in advance for your help,
- Paul

The connection string looks like this

I have IIS4/ASP on one server (Nomad) and SQL7 on another server (Reliant) in a rack. I am attempting to retrieve records from a table.
I am using this dsnless connection script and I am receiving a login failure:
http://204.84.96.168/wcc/trustees/default.asp
set con1 = createObject("ADODB.connection")con1.open "Provider=sqloledb;Server=204.84.96.99;Database=wc c;UID=andy;PWD=sterling;"
set rs=con1.Execute (sql)
I have set up a new login called andy with the above password and associated the login with the wcc database and the one table that I want to pull data from AND given the login db_creator permissions and checked all of the "select, edit, delete. etc" options.
However when I view who has OWNER status of the wcc database it still reflects the user dbo. Could this be the problem? If so, how do I fix it?
Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,
I just realized I have this question. Let's say you are building a simple package that just loads some data from a flat file into a database table.
And let's say that many people will be logging on to the server to run this package from the file system, (so each person will have their own Window's login.) Some people will have rights to read/write to tables database, but some will not. They just need to be able to run the package.
So, when you set up the OLE DB Destination conn mgr, should you choose Windows Authentication or SQL Server login?
Because what if someone does not have permission to write to the database? Won't the package fail to execute since it's relying on the Window user's login to for the OLE DB conn mgr?
Thanks

Hello ,
I am using SQLSExpress 2005 and VS2005.
Yesterday, i changed my sql connection string and i added ;
AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\dbase.mdf
And i moved mdf file to project's debug directory by using cut-paste. I deleted dbase from databases section in SQL Managament Studio. And i attached dbase according to new path(project debug path).
After these, problem started to occur. If i open a table in SQLMS i cant start debugging my application, it throws
exception " Cannot open user default database .login failed. "
And when i start my application , i cant use SQLMS to see my tables or to run query. It says ; ...cannot be opened due to inaccesible file....
It seems like only 1 application can use my db at a time. But before i moved my database, i could both open tables in SQLMS and i could start running my application at the same time
Do u have any idea?
thankss

Hello,
I have a project (using classic ASP & SQL Server) which adds one execute sql statement at a time to a temporary array, and then I join that array with a chr(30) (record separator), to a string variable called strSQL. I then run the following line of code:
conn.execute(strSQL)
I was wondering if there was any limitation to how large the strSQL variable can be? Reason I ask is because thru log writes I can see all of my sql execute lines exist in the variable strSQL prior to running the "conn.execute(strSQL)" command; however, not all of the lines run at the time of execution. Remember, this bug only is occuring whenever I have say over 600 sql lines to execute.
My understanding is that there was no limitation on the size of the string strSQL; however, in the interest of getting the bug fixed quick enough, I decided to just run a loop for each sql statment and run "conn.execute(strSQL)" every 50 times. This, in turn, has solved the problem and I do save all of my data; however, my original bug still exists.
Does anyone know why I have to split the sql commands and execute.com every 50 times instead of just being able to do it once ?
Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Why can't I connect with m_objSQLServer.Connect("radu") ? I also tried m_objSQLServer.Connect("radu", "", ""). Otherwise, I can connect just fine with m_objConn.Open() (after I select a db from the dropdownlist, which is for now populated by hand)....
Thanks a lot for your time.

Hi everyone:
I have a package(SSIS) that works fine on a local SQL Server. Once I deploy it to the server A, and change the connection strings, it throws the following error:
Error: The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "DatabaseName" failed with error code xxxxx.
Error: component "OLE DB Destination"(16) failed validation and returned error code xxxx.
Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error Code: 0x80040E4D. Al OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Description: "Communication Link Failure"
Error: Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error Code: 0x80040E4D. Al OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Description: "TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host."
Error: Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error Code: 0x80040E4D. Al OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Description: "Login failed for user 'username'."
I have confirmed from my Network Engineer that this is not a Network issue. I can connect to the the target sql server from SQL Server A(where the package is running). The only thing that has changed is the connection string. In my package I connect to a local database on the server, and a remote SQL server. The connection to the local sql server works fine from the package. The remote SQL Server connection string is not working, I think. I also noticed that after I enter my password in the conn string, within the VS 2005, after building it, and deploying it on the server, I check back the conn string, and it is no longer there. I have read some posts about it, and I understand that SSIS hides it. What is the work around here? I have never used config files for SSIS, so I would need exact instructions to do that, if that is the way to go. Has someone else ever ran into this error? I have seen some posts on the forum with similar error, but they are not providing any solid answers. In my case, I need to know how to implement either a config file for conn strings, or how to deploy with conn strings which retains password. I can connect to a remote SQL Server from SERVER A utilizing SQL Management Studio, therefore any firewall/port issues are not relevant. I feel the issue is with conn strings, and I need some solid advise on how to implement them especially, where in my case, one of my connections is to a remote sql box, utilizing Sql server authenticaion(which involves use of password). Thanks.
Here is how my current connection string looks like and notice there is no attribute for password:
Data Source=192.1.1.1xxx;User ID=username;Initial Catalog=databasename;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Persist Security Info=True;

Hi,
I have a flat file with hundreds of columns.
I set up a flat file conn mgr with the following settings:
format: delimited
text qualifier: "
header row delimiter: {LF}
row delimiter: {CR}{LF}
column delimiter: comma
Now, here's the problem. In the preview screen, it shows only up to column 518 correctly. In column 519, it shows the remaining hundreds of columns all glommed together as one big string, like: "data", 123, 10/17/2007, "more data", etc
Anyways, I am wondering what to do about this?
When I attempt to run the data flow I get this error:
[Flat File Source [1]] Error: The column delimiter for column "Column 519" was not found.
However, the good news is that I only need the first 9 columns of the file. Some preprocessing in order, maybe?
Thanks!
