Connect To SQL Server Database With Custom Port
Aug 3, 2007
I have a SQL server database that I am trying to connect to from VS2005 in the Server Explorer.
I am not using the standard port for my SQL server listening port and I don't see where I can tell the Server Explorer to use a different port?
Can someone point me in the right direction for connecting to my database?
Thanks.

So, I have 2 laptops, both with standalone SQL Server 2012 Management Studio.
laptop 1 can connect to my remote server on xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,1433
laptop 2 cannot connect through management studio - but can connect directly from the development website on this machine.
I get error 18456, cannot connect to server and login failed for 'user'
Firewall on or off has no effect.

Hi all,I'm having some trouble with connecting to SQL server instance latelywithout adding a port number. I used to be able to always connect toinstance without having to input SQLSERVER,portnumber. However nowthis is not the case. I doing this through an ADO connection object,and creating the connection string. Does anyone know if there was arecent Microsoft update or patch that would've cause this to stopallowing me to connect to a SQL instance without having to put in theport information? Thanks.

Hi,
I've been running some tests with a 3rd party application during the last few days, but the ODBC doesnīt seem to be working well.
The ODBCs are configured to go through specific ports, since there's a firewall between the server (production area) and the database (which is located in the dev area). If i press the TEST CONFIGURATION button after i configured the ODBCs, the test is successful, and the log file of the firewall monitor shows that the server is connecting through the designated ports.
But when i run the 3rd party application, the queries fail, showing an error that says "The server cannot be found or you donīt have access", after this error, another one appears, saying something like "Connection().opened..." - unfortunately I don't have the actual text, I'll try to post it as soon as i get them .
Just to make sure that the 3rd party app is doing its job, dev team wrote a simple VB6 app to query the database, and it shows the same error.
Both apps are running well in the dev environment, since dev machines don't have to go through the firewall, and both apps are using the ODBC configured in the same way as the server. I could think that the problem is the firewall, but the firewall logs show that the production server is trying to use ports 1433, 1434, 445 and 139, and there isnīt a single entry showing activity for the ports specified on the ODBCs configuration.
The database server is running SQL Server 2000, the dev pcs are running Windows 2000, and the ODBC driver version is 2000.85.1117.00.
On the Production environment the server that is trying to access the database is running Windows 2003 Server Ent Ed. SP 1 , and the ODBC driver version is 2000.86.1830.00
I hope some one outthere has any ideas to solve this problem, or at least any idea of what is causing this error, because iīm running out of them.
Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to configure a named instances of SQL Server 2012 SP2 to have specific IP addresses and listen to that IP on port 1433. Alongside this, I have the default instance running on a different IP and listening to that on port 1433.I've managed to get them configured so that they are reachable using the IP, and looking at the log for each they are listening correctly on that IP on port 1433; in addition, the default instance connects fine using the SERVERNAME.However, when I try and connect to the named instance using the SERVERNAME/INSTANCENAME syntax, I receive the following:-
"Cannot connect to SERVERINSTANCE.
Instance failure. (System.Data)"
Configuration for the TCP/IP protocol for that instance is as follows:-
Protocol Tab
Enabled= Yes
Keep Alive = 30000
Listen All = No
IP addresses Tab
IP1
Active = Yes
Enabled = Yes
IP Address = 10.1.1.1
TCP Dynamic Ports = 0
TCP Port = 1433
[code]...
The SQL Browser service is running and prior to switching off Listen To All, I could connect to the instance remotely using the instance name.

Hi all, How to package sql server database as part of our custom application (VB application) using install shield or any software. That setup should detect the presence of sql server. If sql server is not present in the client machine, then our set up should install the sql server and deploy our database. If sql server is present in the client machine, then our set up should install our database alone. How to do that. Please help me. Regards, S.Sevugan.

I am trying to deploy a SQL Server Express database to a remote SQL Server 2005 host. I was planning to copy and paste the data from my local tables to the remote tables using Management Studio Express but my ISP (NTL) appears to be blocking port 1433 and preventing me from getting a connection to the remote database.
Will an upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition help me? I understand that it has a Backup & Restore Wizard but how does this work? Does it rely on a remote connection and will it fall foul of the NTL port blocking? Or, can the file that the Backup stage produces be copied into the web-based MSSQL Manager, that my web host provides, to restore to the remote database?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I've mapped a sqlserver machine within vs2005, but when I attempt to set the database connection, I dont see place to stick the port number (even in the advanced area)... it continues to fail when I test the connection.. I can telnet into the machine on the sql server port, so I know its open to me...
Also - when I publish this to an IIS server, what is the syntax for placing the connection and port number in web.config? I've tried various settings, cant get it to work. <appSettings><add key="con" value="Server=12.123.123.123;PORT=1234;UID=*****;PWD=*****;database=mydb" /></appSettings>
Thanks in advance for the help,

Hi,
I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error.
Here is the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Here is the Environment:
App Server:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Inside Company's Firewall/ Network
Database Server:
Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Remote Connections to the Server is checked
Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP
TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433)
The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition.
I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address.
I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server).
I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP?
What do I tell the network admin to change?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Oran

Our SAP Sql server is on a cloud. I am currently able to access the SQL server from Remote Desktop Connection. I would like to know if I can connect to the Database server without the remote desktop.
Basically I am trying to develop Access Database queries on local computer and I want to pull the data from Remote Server. There is a firewall that is blocking the external ip address.
I would like to know if there is a workaround to set up the connection to first access the "Remote desktop" link and then the SQL server.

I am trying out a simple ASP.NET application which includes access to an SQL Server Database. It works fine on my local machine when I connect to the SQL Server and use SQL commands (via C#) to access it.
But my web hosting provider uses ODBC drivers for database access (they support the SQL database type). I would like to find out how I should connect to my SQL Server database and program the access in order for it to be ODBC compatible, so that I can deploy it to my web hosting server. I should also mention that I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition.
Thanks for any help or pointers.

Hi, I am working through "Sams Teach Yourself ASP Dot NET 2.0 in 24 Hours"
I am upto hour 20 where it says
Configuring an ASP.NET Website to Support Membership
To configure our website to support membership, we must launch the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool. To accomplish this, either click the ASP.NET
Configuration icon at the top of the Solution Explorer or click the Website menu's ASP.NET Configuration option. Either way will open a web browser pointed to a page through which the ASP.NET site can be configured. Figure 20.1 shows the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool.
To add user account support, click the Security link. This will take you to the Security screen shown in Figure 20.2. From this screen, you can specify the user accounts in your system, what roles for users exist, and the access rules for users.
However when I click security I get the following error message;
"There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store."
"The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database."
If I test the provider I get this error;
"Provider Management""Could not establish a connection to the database.""If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider."
I am using MS VWD Express with MS SQL Express. I have run the 'aspnet_regsql' tool on my database which the book fails to mention and verified that the tables were created correctly. I have tried copying the MDF file directly into my 'app_data' directory but this made no difference. I have googled these errors and nothing seems to help. I can connect to the database through a 'SqlDataSource' and have had no trouble with the database in the previous sections of the book. I think it may have something to do with how I setup SQL Express or database permissions, I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I am a beginner on using SQL Server Express. I have two different questions. Here is the first:
I've developed a simple C# application in Visual Studio 2005 that connects to a SQL Server database file. In the application I connect to the database using this connection string:
@"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:Databasesmydatabas.mdf ;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True";
and It works perfect.
But when I move the database file(and the corresponding log-file) to another computer it fails. I've changed the connection string to this
@"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=\myserverDatabasesmydatabase.mdf ;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True";
This is the error message I get when I try to open the database
The file \myserverDatabasesmyDatabase.mdf is on a network path that is not supported for database files.An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file \myServerDatabasesmyDatabase.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
Both computer runs Windows XP SP2.
My second question is:
When I deployed my solution to my production PC(witch also runs Windows XP SP2, .NET Framwork 2.0 is installed on the computer) .When I then tried to run the application I did get this error message
An error has occured when establishing a connection to the server. When connection to a SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remomte conections.....
Appearently I cant treat SQL Server database files in the same way as Access-files, or?
