I'm a bit new to all this, so please bear with me! :)
I've got a webserver in our DMZ and I'm trying to create an ODBC connection from that server to a db server within our firewall. When I try and connect, the following message appears:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 10060
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen (Connect()),
Connection failed:
SQL State: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's going on, as we have an application on the webserver that connects to another SQL DB server within our firewall with no problem!

db server:
OS - WinNT 4.0
SQL - 7.0
If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated!!

Connecting To SQL Server Outside Firewall
Jan 6, 2000I am trying to connect to SQL Server 7.0 from a web server. The web server is outside our firewall, SQL Server is inside the firewall. I want to use a multiprotocol connection so I can encrypt it. We have port 1433 open on our firewall for TCP/IP from SQL Server. When I connect with just TCP/IP it works. When I switch to multiprotocol it fails with error code 1701. I can connect to the SQL Server box from inside the firewall using multiprotocol.
My theory is that when you use multiprotocol you are using another port than 1433. Is this the answer?

Aug 3, 2004I have a simple asp page that queries a database inside our firewall. It works fine from the inside, and only uses port 1433. But if i put it out on our web server it won't connect and tries to use ports 139 and 445. Has anybody ran across this before?

I am really struggling with this problem.
I am connecting to several SQL 2000 servers on another LAN from my workstation and I have to go through a firewall.
I got the firewall people to open port 1433 and was then able to connect any server with a default instance using Query Anlyzer and the IP address of the Server.
When I try to connect from my workstation to a server with a named instance I am being blocked by the firewall before it gets to the server.
I went into Client Network Utility on my workstation and removed named pipes which only left Tcpip using port 1433.
Fire wall is now blocking “nbname UDP 137”.
Is there a setting somewhere on my workstation that I can force the traffic to the named instance to use Tcpip through port 1433.
Any Help would be great.
Connecting SQL Server 2005 Dev Edition To Visual Studio 2005

ok so i have set up SQL server 2005 on a Windows server 2003 machine. I am trying to connect to it via ODBC and/or Visual Studio 2005 on a computer running off the same switch. I have set SQL server to accept remote connections and named pipes as well as had the port unblocked. when i try and connect to it via Vista ODBC wizard or visual studio wizard it says that the server is not there or access is denied.
The server is set up for SQL authentication and i am 100% pos that the username/password i am using is correct. i am at a total loss as to what to do to get my vista machine to talk to that SQL server.

SQL 2005 Express And Visual Studio 2003 - Connecting
Jul 20, 2006I have Visual Studio 2003 and had used it successfully with MSDE. I recently upgraded to SQL 2005 Express and cannot seem to connect to the SQL server. it appears in the list of servers on localhost, but when I try to create a new database it tells me that it "cannot create databases on this server." It will not even open up any existing databases.
I have .NET 2.0 installed. I uninstalled SQL and reinstalled it, but nothing seems to help. I feel I must be missing something, but do not know what.
I no longer have the MSDE installation files, so I hope I can get Studio to talk to SQL Express.
Any help is appreciated.

The connection tests ok in Visual Studio 2003. All permissions are set using SQL Management Studio Express 2005.
The book is using SQL 2000, I have been trying different connection syntax's in the Web.Config file all day and now I have a big headache. I know its something simple, can anyone please advise ?

I want to create an SQLCLR project "HelloWorld" by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. But I am still not sure how to get it started, because I do not understand the following things:

I am running into a problem and have been browsing the web and reading nonstop for answers with no success. My company just installed SQL Server 2005 and I am trying to connect to it via SQL Server Management Studio from my network computer in the same office building.
When I browse for Local or Network Servers in the initial popup box at SQL Management Studio Startup, it doesn't show any servers at all. Is there something I need to enable on the Server using the Configuration Manager or one of the other tools to allow my network computer to "see" the SQL Server?
Any insight would be MUCH appreciated. Even a link to a how-to would suffice. Thank you.

Oct 16, 2007Can anyone tell me if there's a recommended way to link from a SQL 2000 SP4 DB through a firewall to SQL 2005? I have tried with SQLOLEDB but this uses NETBios which is not secure. Or is there a way to tell it not to use NETBios?

Sql 2005 Instance; Dynamic Ports And Firewall Issue
Jan 27, 2008We have an internal sql 2000 server that acts as the database backend for our
Internet presence. I believe that the sql server can be accessed because of a
firewall "exception" (?) that allows the external web server to talk to the
sql server using a specific IP address and port (namely that of the sql server.)
Now we need to install a sql 2005 instance on the same box which needs to act
as an Internet backend. The sql browser service will resolve all client
requests to the default or named instance. But I read that the sql browser service
assigns a "dynamic" port to the Instance! If that is the case, it's unlikely that,
unless the firewall has all ports open for outgoing traffic, that the sql instance will be
able to communicate with the web server.
My conclusion:
Leave the default instance (sql 2000) port at its current value;
assign the named instance an unused port;
Make sure the sql browser is running on the box!
Tell the firewall guys to make an exception for the new port.
Does this seems reasonable to you?

SQL Server 2005 Express Remote Admin Firewall Issues

I'm experiencing problems connecting remotely (through the Management Studio) to a named instance of SQL Server Express 2005.
After investigation I determined it was a firewall issue - turn off windows firewall and I can connect fine. I initially added ports 1433 and 1434 to windows firewall - still no joy. Then I added the binaries explicitly (sqlservr.exe and sqlbrowsr.exe - or whatever they are) - still no joy. So, I looked into the firewall log to see what was being dropped. I found that my IP was trying to connect via port 1047 (TCP)... I've searched for anything about this on google and cannot find any indication that the management studio should be using this port to connect.
If I add this port, the connection works fine. Has anyone else experienced this ? As there seems to be no way of modifying the management studio to connect via a specific port, I'm a bit concerned that something is just not right.
I would appreciate any advice you can give.

Windows Firewall Port Needed For Reporting Services 2005

Can anyone tell me which port or ports I need to turn on in the server's firewall so that I can access Reporting Services through my laptop's SSMS?

May 5, 2006I'm very confused. I installed Visual Studio 2005 and thought I understood that SQL Server 2005 came with it, but it appears that it's SQL Server 2005 - Express. Can anyone tell me what I need to do in order to get Data Transformation Services loaded or the equivalent of DTS in SQL Express?

SSIS And CISCO VPN
Oct 2, 2007I am building an SSIS package that will transform some data over a cisco VPN.
After establishing a cisco VPN connection some tables get pulled from this remote server onto the local server. that part is working fine.
the problem is that now i want to automate this whole process. The problem with my automating, is that when i launch the dos command line batch file to open the VPN connection, there is a msgbox window that comes up on the remote server with a successful login, perhaps intentionally, that you have to manually click 'continue' and then the VPN is attached. it could be purposely put there so that hackers cant just have a process that is automatedly trying to ping for vpn connections.
So my question is, what solution options do i have in trying to get around this need ot manually click ok, when i am automating the running of this SSIS package?
comparable problems used to happen in the dos world and you could use a /S to suppress any message boxes that come up during the executing of a batch file.
i just need like 1 mouse click in the mouse buffer that would fire once the message box came up to continue on....

Not Connecting To SQL Through Visual Studio 2008
Jun 15, 2008This should be simple - using the server explorer I select the server and then the database that's running on that server. It lets me test the database connection at that point - which does work.
Then when I try to add the database it says -
Could not load file or assembly Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc, Version=10.0.0 ... The system cannot find the file specified.
So far as I can see the specified file is Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo.dll which has a current version of 9.0.242.0 and sits within the SQL Server files. That is also the version number held in the registry.
The version of SQL is 2005. The database was created using Create Database through VS 2008, .net 3.5.
Also, I installed VS 2008 first, which puts in SQL Compact. And then tried installing SQL 2005 Development which still gave the same error message. So I uninstalled SQL Compact and SQL 2005. And then did a clean install of SQL 2005 Developer. Does VS 2008 cope with this?
Is there a version 10 of SMO? Or is there somewhere within SQL or Visual Studio where it could be holding a version number of 10 for the dll? Or any other ideas?

Connecting To SSIS In Management Studio.

I have 4 named instances of SQL 2005 running on one of our sales server (dont ask me why I have 4 instances.Its a beefy box btw). All the instances have SSIS Packages (around 6-7 in each instance) saved to the SQL server and not to the file system. The issue is every time i need to look at the packages or export the packages from SSMS I have to edit the MsDtsSrvr.ini.xml and type in the named instance name within the <ServerName></ServerName> tag . I then have to restart my SSIS. I dont see an easier approach to this method.
This is causing me a lot of unnecessary time waste. is there anyway this can be automated where in i can pass the instance name dynamically to the ini file or even more best, can I have all the instance names in the ini file and some how look at the packages in each Instance. I am not sure how having all the instance names in the ini file woud resolve the issue though.
I know I can use BIDS which is much more flexible and a recommended approach but need a solution for looking at SSIS packages through SSMS in all of the 4 instances. I look forward to recommendations from anyone who have better ideas and suggestions.

i have built a web project in visual studio, and i have an instance of sql server express running. when i try to access a database(which is located in the file system) through the web project, i get the following message:

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Unable to open the physical file "C:dbSAMdbSAM.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:dbSAMdbSAM.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
i am running visual studio 2005 professional, on windows XP pro with IIs installed. i also have a report server on the same sql server instance.
any help would be greatly appreciated
Error Connecting In Management Studio

I am having problems connecting to my SQL Server instance with Management Studio; basically the setup is as follows;
*Single server running windows 2003 enterprise - in a workgroup not domain
*SQL Server is installed on this machine
*When I try and connect from the same machine using its own IP address and Windows authentication I get the 18452 error "login failed for {NULL} user"
I am testing it like this because Sharepoint is failing in configuration wizard because it is connecting the same way - at least the login failure audit logs say the same.

COnnecting Sql Server Remotely Using Management Studio
Oct 23, 2007I have a sql server 2005 remotely, need to connect from client using sql management studio. I am unable to connect from one of the client machine and able to connect from different machine.
The tcp/ip, named pipes and sql browser is enabled in (sscm)server and windows firewall is off in client.
I am getting (provider: sql network interfaces, error 26 - error locating server/instance specified)

SQL Server Management Studio - Connecting To Serve
Sep 20, 2007I am trying to connect to a sql server 2005 server using either the SQL Server Management Studio program using either windows auth or sql server auth but I can not. When I click on the connect button to connect to a server it never connects. I can not cancel once I press connect. It never times out after I press connect. I removed all registered servers that were registered previously. I have uninstalled all software that involved sql server (and sql2000) run a registry cleaner(not microsofts), installed the software to a new directory and still I can not connect to the sql2005 server (the only db).
I tested the connection from my machine to the production database system using osql and it worked fine. I registered the server tested the connection (using the management studio) and it tested fine. When I try to connect to the database engine it does not work.
When I had another user login to my machine and launch the SQL Server Management Studio I noticied that it ran a configuration utility for first use. When I uninstalled the SQL Server Management Studio on my machine it never came up again. Is there any way that I can get the configuration utility to run again on my account?
Any ideas? Things to test?

The issue,
I have had SQL express installed and working ok, however, I can no longer connect
OS: XP sp2.0
.net installed
ver1.1 .. 2.0 sp1, 3.0sp1 and 3.5
The install of SQL was using the SQLEXR_adv download
I have removed SQL and all associated applications folders and windows SQL services
I have re-installed many times but always receive the same issue.
I re-built the .net 2.0
The issue I have is when I try and connect form my applications or with Express sql management studio I receive the following error:

Problems Connecting To Server Using Management Studio

I got this problem which makes me struggle in the last few days.
I am able to connect to my local server using a query analyzer or calling sql commands in a window application, but there's no way I can access it in Management Studio: by clicking "Connect" it just waits forever, and it doesn't respond to any other command (it must be shut by terminating the process)
Got any hints?

Connecting Visual Studio To Remote SQLExpress

I've been trying to find an answer to this to no avail. I'm not even sure if its possible. I like to do development at home in addition to work, like most of you do. Since it is my home computer, I like to play games, so I try to keep applications to a minimum. I would like to install sqlexpress on a virtual machine (which I have successfully done), and I can connect to it via Management Studio on my local machine (non-vm). Is there a way to set visual studio to use this connection as opposed to local host? I really do not want to load sqlexpress on my local machine and have yet another thing tying up system resources.

Sql Query Analyzer Against Cisco Call Manager DB
Nov 24, 2006Greetings all. New user here. I'm just getting started with using sql query's with our cisco voIP call manager database. Although cisco has a utility "CDR" which runs pre-defined reports; it's not enough. So far there have been several request for specific data which "CDR" cannot compile, in which we have to use analyzer. Unfortunately I'm not versed and need a little help. It's been asked I pull a report from call manager which shows all "forced authorization Codes" cisco calls these client matter codes. Here is the query I tried using. It pulls all user data but the client matter code column is empty. I tried with * and *.* inside brackets as well.

Can anybody help so I can get the records of who has what particular in use client matter code?
