i have built a web project in visual studio, and i have an instance of sql server express running. when i try to access a database(which is located in the file system) through the web project, i get the following message:

i am running visual studio 2005 professional, on windows XP pro with IIs installed. i also have a report server on the same sql server instance.

I then installed SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition and reinstalled Visual C# -- both on the same machine. I can connect to SQL Server 2005 using SQL Server Management Studio. However, Visual C# is a different story. When I try to add a new Data Connection, it defaults the data source to .SQLEXPRESS, which is no longer on my machine. I can select .MSSQLSERVER, but when I click on either OK or Test Connection, I time out with an error message -- error 25 - Connection string is not valid. ok so i have set up SQL server 2005 on a Windows server 2003 machine. I am trying to connect to it via ODBC and/or Visual Studio 2005 on a computer running off the same switch. I have set SQL server to accept remote connections and named pipes as well as had the port unblocked. when i try and connect to it via Vista ODBC wizard or visual studio wizard it says that the server is not there or access is denied.
The server is set up for SQL authentication and i am 100% pos that the username/password i am using is correct. i am at a total loss as to what to do to get my vista machine to talk to that SQL server.
This should be simple - using the server explorer I select the server and then the database that's running on that server. It lets me test the database connection at that point - which does work.
Then when I try to add the database it says -
Could not load file or assembly Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc, Version=10.0.0 ... The system cannot find the file specified.
So far as I can see the specified file is Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo.dll which has a current version of 9.0.242.0 and sits within the SQL Server files. That is also the version number held in the registry.
The version of SQL is 2005. The database was created using Create Database through VS 2008, .net 3.5.
Also, I installed VS 2008 first, which puts in SQL Compact. And then tried installing SQL 2005 Development which still gave the same error message. So I uninstalled SQL Compact and SQL 2005. And then did a clean install of SQL 2005 Developer. Does VS 2008 cope with this?
Is there a version 10 of SMO? Or is there somewhere within SQL or Visual Studio where it could be holding a version number of 10 for the dll? Or any other ideas?

I have started to create a databse using SQL Server Management Studio Express, just a few tables, one with data. I now want to creat a some windows forms to populate the tables. However when I try to use the Add New Data Source wizard, I get an error when I try to create the connection string, but I have managed to connect to a copy of AdventureWorks located in the same parent directory.
Error is :
Unable to open the physical file "...". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)".
An attemp to attach an auto-named database for file ... failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
As I can connect to AdventureWorks, I presume Windows thinks the file is open, but I have no idea why, how to check, or how to close it.

I've been trying to find an answer to this to no avail. I'm not even sure if its possible. I like to do development at home in addition to work, like most of you do. Since it is my home computer, I like to play games, so I try to keep applications to a minimum. I would like to install sqlexpress on a virtual machine (which I have successfully done), and I can connect to it via Management Studio on my local machine (non-vm). Is there a way to set visual studio to use this connection as opposed to local host? I really do not want to load sqlexpress on my local machine and have yet another thing tying up system resources.

I have Visual Studio 2003 and had used it successfully with MSDE. I recently upgraded to SQL 2005 Express and cannot seem to connect to the SQL server. it appears in the list of servers on localhost, but when I try to create a new database it tells me that it "cannot create databases on this server." It will not even open up any existing databases.
I have .NET 2.0 installed. I uninstalled SQL and reinstalled it, but nothing seems to help. I feel I must be missing something, but do not know what.
I no longer have the MSDE installation files, so I hope I can get Studio to talk to SQL Express.
Any help is appreciated.

The connection tests ok in Visual Studio 2003. All permissions are set using SQL Management Studio Express 2005.
The book is using SQL 2000, I have been trying different connection syntax's in the Web.Config file all day and now I have a big headache. I know its something simple, can anyone please advise ?

hello eveyone..i have just downloaded and installed the visaul web developer 2005 express edition and sqlserver 2005 express edition.On top of that i even downloaded and installed the northwind database.But my problem is when i am connecting to the northwind database by clicking toos menu>connect to the database>choose datasource>new connection>..i have provided it with the required information..but as soon as i press "Test Connection" button the following error box displays.. View 2 Replies View RelatedI've downloaded and installed both of these (VWD installs both) and have been trying to run through the walkthrough of setting up a web application which supports membership. However, no matter what I do I invariably get errors like the following:

I'm concerned why VWD and VSQL express versions don't run correctly out of the box (so to speak). I'm not an expert on configuring these services -- but that's the point of offering these tools to hobbyists: So we can learn about how to make some of these great applications using MS tools.
My configuration::
Windows XP SP2 -- clean machine as of about a month ago, never had any dev tools, web servers, or the like on it.
IIS is installed and the service says its running
VSQL and VWD express versions installed (no errors on installation)
SQL server service indicates it is running
.Net 2.0 framework installed (no errors on installation)
Note: I've tried installing on two separate machines. Obviously I'm missing something fundamental.
Would someone please help me go through the million things I [apparently] need to do to configure all these tools so I can get on to actually coding up my first web application? If this is documented somewhere, all I can say is I tried to find it but it certainly wasn't obvious.
We have a project already developed iusing VS 2003 Enterprise architect edition using sql server 2000(have lots of table and stored procs etc.)
Now planning to switch to Sql server 2005 are there any issues associated with the switch.
I mean front end programming wise asp.net and vb.net front end codes do they work straight away or need to make any changes to all the front end codes, we are using datasets, data readers calling stored procs and also using lot of hash tables and XML object to make bulk loads to sql server via sqlxml3.0 sp3.

I have a question about a problem that I cannot seem to tackle. I have installed the following programs on Windows Vista:
- SQL Server 2005
- Visual Studio 2008
- SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5
- SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 Server Tools

1. I want to create a SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 database in the SQL Server Management Studio
2. I want my SQL Express server in SQL Server 2005 to be a distributor and publisher
About 1. In SQL Server Management Studio I cannot choose SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 .
ABout 2. I tried to setup my server to be a distrubutor by running a stored procedure with the following name: sp_adddistributor. I get the following error: This edition of SQL Server cannot act as a Publisher or Distributor for replication.

I am no longer able to manage SQL Server at the server explorer in Visual studio. i.e. create, modify and delete for Diagrams, Tables, Views, Stored Procs & Functions. Further more, it missing Diagram and function folder. I can only view or read data.
But I can access local MSDE as usual.

Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

Im trying to make a website that I can enter information on the website and have it transfered to the database the problem is the website and database are on two different computers , how do I copy the data base onto the other computer and have it will be ready to take information from the website and store it in the database?
HELP!!! I've looked at a few, but none of them support insert and update. I hate to say it, but the Access inteface is better, but uses a different SQL than SQL Server. :(

Today was my first day to use DTS. I tried to transfer a Visual FoxPro Database to my SQL Server. I noticed that I am getting errors on the data that contains date fields. So, for testing purposes I transformed the Visual FoxPro fields that contained datefields into char fields. And this works, but obviously I cannot hunt around in a huge database looking for datefields in tables and change them manually. Plus, by changing to char fields I noticed that those fields that are empty are transformed as 1899-12-30. :p
Does anyone have any ideas?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI wrote an application on my home machine using Visual Studio and SQL Server. The application runs fine. This application needed to be installed on a server for a company.
I copied the executable and the library files to the company server. The Machine is a Windows 2003 Small Business Server with SQL Server engine installed already. So I installed SQL Server Express to be able to use the Engine and build my database on the server.
When I ran the executable it would not connect to the server even though I changed the settings in the connection string to the sql server on the SBS Server.
I installed Visual C# Express on the machine to debug the application and I can not get the data source to connect to the SQL Server.
I get the following error
SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified

I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yes I am a newby (or is that newbie) and this is my first post.My Visual Web Developer site work really well on my PC, I read the books took it slowly, created logins and sql tables and then found a good hosting company with Server 2005 ... I though I was one step away from the road to success ... then I hit the big brick wall. Spent hours on Google trying to find some answers without joy ... all I found were lots of users with the same or similar problems ... and some answers that caused more problems !1) Please can someone give my a 'step by step' idiots guide on how to convert my ASPNETDB.MDF content to run on Server 2005. I have Server Management Studio so I am happy about loading the translated files but I don't understand how to break them down into tables and logs.2) Once the files are across can I run a connection string from VWD directly to the tables on the server instead of SQL local ? I assume that is set in web.config !!.... normally I am happy to learn by trial and error. But I can't get around or over this brick wall.Welcome assistance, advice or a ladder ... with simple instructions ?
