Mar 3, 2006We are new to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. We are going to develope a solution for one of our client and we have to decide on which database to use for the solution. Client wanted to have a low cost solution. Thus we were not in a position to push them for SQL Sever 2000.
In the process, we also thought of having MySQL as one of the option. Another option we have is to use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
We wanted to know if SQL Server 2005 Express Edition can be used with Visual Studion 2003 (Ver 1.1) or it can only be used with Visual Studio 2005 (Ver 2.0)?

May 10, 2006I Try to install SQL Server Express in Windows 2003 Standard edition x64 and have some problems.
It say that can not instal client and say to use sqlncli_x64.msi, but I can not find this packege to install this client and I receive one alert with ASP.NET register 64.
I Check all request systems requirements many times and looks ok.
How can I solve this to install properly the SQL 2005 Express? When the setup finish say that was not possiblem to install SQL Server 2005 Express.

I then installed SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition and reinstalled Visual C# -- both on the same machine. I can connect to SQL Server 2005 using SQL Server Management Studio. However, Visual C# is a different story. When I try to add a new Data Connection, it defaults the data source to .SQLEXPRESS, which is no longer on my machine. i am having a truble in accesing the server 2005 express edition from my client systems in server 2003 domain network. i get server not accessible. whereas my domain is working perfectly. i really tried alot and i have enable tcpip and named pipes and i am still getting errors while accessing. i have also created user reights for the domain users to access sql server. still i couldn't able to access it.
please guide me to over come this issue. I'm dying.My project is similar to SAP concept project and i am doing it in a production industry.so each department as to access the data from the server to update their daily production and activity.

Jul 20, 2006I have Visual Studio 2003 and had used it successfully with MSDE. I recently upgraded to SQL 2005 Express and cannot seem to connect to the SQL server. it appears in the list of servers on localhost, but when I try to create a new database it tells me that it "cannot create databases on this server." It will not even open up any existing databases.
I have .NET 2.0 installed. I uninstalled SQL and reinstalled it, but nothing seems to help. I feel I must be missing something, but do not know what.
I no longer have the MSDE installation files, so I hope I can get Studio to talk to SQL Express.
Any help is appreciated.

The connection tests ok in Visual Studio 2003. All permissions are set using SQL Management Studio Express 2005.
The book is using SQL 2000, I have been trying different connection syntax's in the Web.Config file all day and now I have a big headache. I know its something simple, can anyone please advise ?

Dec 19, 2007hello eveyone..i have just downloaded and installed the visaul web developer 2005 express edition and sqlserver 2005 express edition.On top of that i even downloaded and installed the northwind database.But my problem is when i am connecting to the northwind database by clicking toos menu>connect to the database>choose datasource>new connection>..i have provided it with the required information..but as soon as i press "Test Connection" button the following error box displays.. I've installed Visual Basic 2005 express edition & tried to connect to SQL Server 2005 express edition. I noticed that VB2005 Express Edition doesn't have any OLEDB provider for SQL Server. The only OLEDB Provider is for M.Access. Is this correct? if so, what should i do if i want to connect SQL Server 2005 express edition with VB2005 express edition by using OLEDB connection type?

server, during the installation of the SQL Server Database Services the server hangs
and displays Setting File Security. I let the install run for over 45 mins and it still hangs... the log file is useless..
i cant find any clues as to why ...

And when im using exactly the same code in windows console application everytihng works fine when i run it on pc with sql server and emulator, or other pc connect to network. A server computer running SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.
A industrial computer running SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
And now also a Psion WorkAboutPro with CE 5 that should run SQL Server Compact Edition.
The industrial computer syncs its data with the server, basically saying "this has happened".
Now I want the Psion to sync with the industrial computer, but this sync must two-way.
I have tried to find a guide or something that can tell me "do this to sync" but the information i have found is sketchy at best.
If someone could point me in the right direction of a guide or something else it would be much appreciated.

Replicating From SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition To Remote SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

I have been unable to create a replication from an SQL Server 2005 standard edition database to remote SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. The remote express edition is on a Virtual Private Server we are leasing from a hosting company. The name of the remote DB is similar to vs572.si-vs572.com. I can connect to this with SQL server authentication through Management Studio and also with SSIS. But, I have been unable to create a push subscription (I have tried a test push subscription with the same publication to a local SQL Express server here in our office and this works fine).
Here is the error message: SQL Server Replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'VS572SQLEXPRESS'.
The hosting company had originally installed a shared SQL server which would not support replication. They then installed SQL Express edition and I was hoping this would allow us to run a replication.
I tried to connect to VS572SQLEXPRESS with out any luck. I check the remote connections, made sure replication was installed, etc., but no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition In SBS 2003 R2 Max Memory Question
Feb 11, 2007We have only a small busines and haven't got too much experience with servers and now have a proliant server coming in with SBS 2003 R2 Premium with the 4 GB max memory that SBS 2003 can handle according to the specs.
We weren't planning on using the SQL 2005 worlgroup edition up till now, but now we might. According to the specs of SQL server 2005 workgroup edition however, it has a max RAM of 3GB!
Is this going to be a problem and should we keep using our previous DB, or can we migrate toward SQL server with the 4 GB of RAM?

Dec 13, 2006I have an SBS 2003 server that is running SQL 2000 standard edition which was recently upgraded to Small Business Server 2003 R2.
I have installed SQL 2005 workgroup edition on the SBS 2003 R2 server which acts both as an AD server and Exchange server. I installed SQL 2005 for the purpose of using SQL 2005 for my sharepoint services on the Small Business Server R2.
Now I have SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 workgroup edition installed, but I'm unsure whether I can uninstall the SQL 2000 and how to know whether the sharepoint instance is running in SQL 2005 or SQL 2000?
Additionally, I have some MSDE's running for WSUS and Server Reporting which are installed by the Small Business Server installation.
Which tools should I use to become familiar with identifying the databases and which version of the database engine is used for which database regardless of whether it is a SQL instance or a MSDE instance.
How can I identify which SQL versions are not in use and whether I can uninstall if not needed.

Apr 5, 2008I am having major performance issues with Microsoft SQL 2005 x64 Standard Editions performance on Windows Server 2003 x64. The PC has two quad core cpu's with 8gb of ram and running a 500gb mirrored SCSI (Raid 1) drive system. The database running on the server is about 11gb. I've run a defrag several times which helps a little but I was hoping I could do something else to increase the performance.
I have also found that the bottle neck in the SSIS package is the backup and restore process of an 11gb database which takes about 1 hour (backup takes 1 hour and restore takes 1 hour) when it should take about 11 minutes. Is there anything I can do to make these processes run faster or to find out why they are taking so long? Any ideas would be a great help.

ok so i have set up SQL server 2005 on a Windows server 2003 machine. I am trying to connect to it via ODBC and/or Visual Studio 2005 on a computer running off the same switch. I have set SQL server to accept remote connections and named pipes as well as had the port unblocked. when i try and connect to it via Vista ODBC wizard or visual studio wizard it says that the server is not there or access is denied.
The server is set up for SQL authentication and i am 100% pos that the username/password i am using is correct. i am at a total loss as to what to do to get my vista machine to talk to that SQL server.

Installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition 64-bit Extended On Windows 2003 SP2 Cluster

I've installed Windows 2003 SP2 in a stand-alone cluster (will be adding a second node later). I'm now installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition 64-bit extended and would like to have the "Create a SQL Server Failover Cluster" box to not be grayed out. Even when I check the "SQL Server Database Services" box, it still has the cluster box grayed out.
Any idea's?

We are having major performance issues with Microsoft SQL 2005 64bit Standard Editions performance on Windows Server 2003. We have an SSIS package running very slowly (and other sql tasks) on our two quad core cpu system with 8gb of ram and running a 500gb mirrored SCSI (Raid 1) drive system. The database running on the server is about 11gb.
Does anybody have any suggestion we could try to increase the performance of the server? I've run a defrag several times which helps a little but I was hoping I could do something else to increase the performance.

May 9, 2006I am currently downloading the mega-sized files for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and was wondering if I was going to be able to install it onto my workstation alongside the SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition? Was hoping someone could advise. I did browse for an answer, but have not come across it yet. I know I'll find out once my download is complete, but that could be awhile :)

Connecting Samples To SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
Sep 27, 2006ok, I've installed sql server, run the install samples and database, but when I go into SQL Server, the database and samples are not there. How do I connect the two?
