Connecting To SQL Server On A VPC Host

Jan 19, 2008

VPC Host: Vista 64Bit
VPC Guest: Win2K3 (32Bit)

VPC is configured to use the wireless card on the host.
Firewalls on both systems are completely disabled.
Machines can ping each other.
Both machines can access the Internet.
I can browse the SQL Reporting Services Web Site on the Host from the Guest.
Host SQL Install has remote connections enabled.
If I browse for Network server from teh connect dialog on teh Guest, it finds the Host.

Why can't I connect to the Databse Engine on the Host from the Guest?
I have tried both TCP/IP and Named Pipes and both show a connection failure. (Not a login failure)

If it matters, the Guest OS also has a SQL Database Engine running. But I don't know why that would stop me from connecting to a remote instance.

And suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

SQL 2000 Replication Agents Connecting To Local Host Multiple Times?

Aug 21, 2007

Hi all

I have SQL 2000 SP4 running on a W2K server SP4.

The server acts as a subcriber and publisher and acts as its own distributor.
Each publication uses its own distribution agent and is set to loop.

There are 4 queued updating subscriptions on this box.

When running 3rd party tools to determine open active ports, the replication executables (distrib and logreader) are connecting to local server multiple times. Easily 15+ established connections plus many more waits.

Everything connects to 1433 then opens a new port.

Is this because of the queued updating?

Replication is functioning as it should without any problems.

I even checked our 2 main distribution servers which only act as distributors and there is not one connection from replication to itself.

Any insight would be appreciated

Thx
John

Changing Host Server Name

Oct 24, 2000

At work, we are in the process of moving a server running SQL Server 7 from one domain to another. A part of this domain change will necessitate that the server be renamed. In a couple of tests that we ran we found that changing the domain does not cause problems, but changing the server name does. How does one register the databases with the new server name without reinstalling everything from scratch?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as we are under a time crunch here. Please reply to my email as I am unable to check this board often.

Thanks,
Mike Sinnott

Application Insist Open SQL Server 2005 While The Host Still With SQL Server 2000

Mar 12, 2007

I don't know why my application on the internet try to access the SQL Server 2005, when the host still having the 2000 edition. I put the following connection string:
        Data Source=##DBSERVER##;Initial Catalog=##DBNAME##;User ID=##DBUSER##;Password=##DBPASSWORD##;

Isn’t everything fine with that? I created the table by host but dosen’t work. I’m wondering if can I conect straight with Data Base, without register in the server, like with mdb?

This is the error that I’m getting.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Issues On Changing Name Of Our SQL Server Host

Feb 18, 2002

Issues on Changing Name of our SQL Server Host
Michael G (m1g@hotmail.com)

We are going to rename the Server machine Host Name that our SQL2000
(named instance) Server now resides on.

* I am searching for all references in Operating System items, such as .cmd, .bat. ftp files referring to it (eg., sqlservNM)
* I am searching for all references in Operating System items, such
as ODBC, VB ADO, DOA and DSN-less connections that refer to it.
These references will be changed manually on the day of the change.

I am NOT so certain that I need to search for all SQL Server Objects referring to it, (eg., DTS packages and scheduled Jobs). Must these
objects be changed manually or will they be redirected somehow?

Anyone with any experience on this?

Thanks,
Michael

SQL Server Do Host Variables Need Rtrim

Aug 13, 2007

I understand that for SQL Server rtrim is not needed in where clause equates because SQL Server

automatically trims the spaces. Is rtrim necessary when comparing to a host variable since rtrim is a deterministic function? It it needed in the following example
Select ....
where
TEXT = rtrim(:I--HV-001)

TEXT is a varchar column in the SQL Server database and it is getting compared to the host variable.

MSSQL Dbo Table Duplicates On Host Server

Apr 26, 2005

(i am not sure which forum to post this too)
Hi, I imported a table onto my host's server, table_Login which has username password, and userID. userID is Primary Key & identity.
When I had my code do insert of new user, I was getting error the Login.userID doesn't allow null values. Which shouldn't have mattered because userID is an identity.
After making a diagram from Enterprise Manager, I noticed that I have two Login tables (although only one shows in Enterprise Manager's "Table" node view. The second table, which had none of the constraints that my table of the same name which is listed under the "Table" node does; appears to be the table which is being written to by my code.
I can't find this table, Login(dbo), through Enterprise Manager, nor am i sure how to access it through Query Analyzer. Needless to say, I don't like this arrangement. and well tech support for this host seems to leave a lot to be desired.
Anyone know what needs to be done so that I can fix it or fight with tech support to convince them that they should?

An Error Has Occurred While Establishing A Connection To The Server. When Connecting To SQL Server 2005, This Failure May Be Caused By The Fact That Under The Default Settings SQL Server Does Not Allow Remote Connections.

Jan 22, 2008

My site works fine in VWD2008 express, but I get this error when I try to use it on my live website.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
According to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277  I am supposed to:

1.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder.  The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this:  All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication.  I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

Building An NT Box To Host SQL 7

I'm in the midst of planning how to build an NT box to host SQL 7.0 and was wondering if there is any advantage to segregating the RAID 5 Array (5 x 18GB drives) into numerous *logical* partitions to separate database and log files (I can't see what advantage there would be if the disks are all on the same array, but..)

If anyone has any pointers or links to recommended NT configurations for hosting SQL, I'd appreciate hearing them.
