Connecting To An Access DB Using Linked Server Gives The Error, System Resource Exceeded
Oct 18, 2007
I am using SQL 2000 (Standard Edition, SP4) and have created a linked server to access a Access MDB file. When I run a simple query against that server, I get the error:
Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: System resource exceeded.]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' ICommandText::Execute returned 0x80004005: ].
I am able to connect to this same Access MDB file from another SQL server (SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition, SP4). I have compared the two servers and they both have the same version of MDAC (2.8) and the same version of the Jet OLE DB Provider.
Any idea why this would work from one server and not from the other. Also, I was able to perform the same queries from the first server a week back.
Thanks in advance for you help.

I am uploading a text file to a MS SQL 2000 database using an ODBC driver. Here is the code:

conn2.ConnectionTimeout = 200
cmd2 = New OdbcCommand("Select top 5 * from [" + fn + "] ", conn2)
cmd2.CommandType = CommandType.Text
cmd2.CommandTimeout = 300
conn2.Open()
dr2 = cmd2.ExecuteReader()
FieldCount = dr2.FieldCount
conn2.Close()

Before when this happened a reboot of the sql server resolved the problem. That's not working this time and it's certainly not a practical solution.
Any suggestions?

Hi, I am using OPENROWSET command to read from a dbf file in Transact-SQL of SQL Server 2005. Query runs fine for a few tries after that i get the error:
OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: [Microsoft][ODBC Text Driver] System resource exceeded.]
If a restart the Server everything works fine, but then the problem starts again. I saw a related postinf with no
acceptable answer, unfortunately.
Thanks in advance,

Hi all,
I have a 400MB Excel file that I consume from another automated process (don't ask). I copy this file down locally to my server, and I am attempting to create an SSIS package that points to this file via a connection manager. My computer starts gobbling up massive amounts of memory (devenv.exe gets up to about 800MB or so, then drops back down to 100MB) even when I attempt to rename the connection in the connection managers tab.
I have set all BypassPrepare to TRUE and ValidateExternalMetadata properties to FALSE, and still it can take up to 3 to 6 minutes for BI Dev Studio to respond. My specs:
Intel Centrino Duo 2.00 GHz
2GB RAM
XP Pro SP2
There MUST be a way for me to work effectively on a file of this size. Please help! Thanks much for any assistance.
Sincerely,
Brian Pulliam

As a database developer, I have so many databases that I "own" scattered across various servers that it''s getting difficult to remember where all of my databases reside. It doesn't work that the DBAs have taken to some very hard to remember server naming conventions.
I was going to create aliases via the configuration manager, but it turns out the DBAs overwrite my entries each night with THEIR aliases and they won't add any for my use.
So I decided to simply add some records to my host file so that instead of having to connect to "SERVER-AD_DADF-DAFDASS" I can just use "CustomerA".
This solution seems to work until I tried to access a linked server. If I connect to the main server via it's actual name, I can hit the remote/linked server with no issue. However, if I connect to the main server using it's alias, connection to the remote/linked server fails with: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'.
The linked server is set up to use current security context and I'm not logging into the alias any differently that I do when using the actual server name.

Could anyone shed some light on the syntax of accessing system function on a linked server?I'm trying to get the recovery models of databases on a linked. However using databasepropertyex locally generates wrong results.e.g. select databasepropertyex(name, 'recovery') RecoveryModel from [server/databasename].master.dbo.SysDatabases I tried select [server/databasename].databasepropertyex(name, 'recovery') RecoveryModel from [server/databasename].master.dbo.SysDatabases which does not work. Thanks.

I have set up an MSDE SQL Server in my Win XP Pro PC and am able to connect to it on the host PC, and over my LAN. However, when I try to connect to it over the Internet my connection is refused with the following message:SQL server does not exist or access denied. ConnectionOpen (Connect())Some background:I have router/NAT firewall and have opened port 1433 (I have even tried a DMZ to the SQL Server machine). The Router is definitely going to the SQL Server PC! I am fairly certain that the connection string is correct.Any help would be most gratefully received.

Hi all,
I have built several Linked Servers from my SQLServer 7 database to some Access 97 MDB files sitting on a Novell file server. When I am physically sitting at the SQLServer I can access/modify data through the links just fine. I have successfully built views, stored procs and jobs referencing these links and they all work perfectly ... As long as I am sitting at the SQLServer. So if I execute 'Select * from RT1...Emp' I get data back.
Now my problem. If I connect to the server from Query Analyser on a different machine I can not execute and anything that references a linked server. If I execute 'Select * from RT1...Emp' I get.
Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error
[OLE/DB Provider returned message: DIsk or Network error.]
I want to be able access various views and stored procs via a VB app so. Eventually I will be moving all of the Access data into the SQLServer but for now I must access the data via links.
Any ideas?

We recently translated the backend db from Access(97) to SQL Server.We are still using Access frontends. I have an update query in theAccess front end that uses a lookup table to populate fields. Thecommon fields between the table and the lookup table are the primarykey (LocID) and date & time fields. The query is:UPDATE tblPT_Offsets INNER JOIN tblPT ON tblPT_Offsets.LocID =tblPT.LocID SET tblPT.Offset_ft = [tblPT_Offsets].[Offset_ft],tblPT.Salinity = [tblPT_Offsets].[Salinity]WHERE (((tblPT.Offset_ft) Is Null) AND ((tblPT.Salinity) Is Null) AND((Format([Date]+[Time],"mm/dd/yy hh:nn")) Between [StartDate] And[EndDate]));This worked fine in Access and seemed to work fine after switching toAccess, but on closer look, there is exactly a 2 day error beingintroduced. A quick search of the newsgroups brings up lots of Accessto SQL date problems, but a 2 day offset seems rather strange? Anyideas??I know the field names Date and Time are inappropriate, but legacyissues are a pain in the butt to resolve!! Could this be a problem?David

Hi everyone,
I'v finally managed to get a New Linked Server setup on SQL 2005 Express SP2 using the 'Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers' MSDASQL. I have a Database setup on the SQL 2005 Express Database Engine which contains a query that OPENQUERY's the linked server. The query executes OK.
The problems in when I link an Access 2003 SP2 .adp file to the SQL 2005 Database Engine database. All objects, including the query containing the OPENQUERY (to the linked server) appear. However, when I run the same query within Access I get the following error:
"The OLE DB Provider for Linked Server "name" reported an error."
"The Provider reported an unexpected catastropic failure"
So the query works running within SQL 2005 Management Studio, but the same query doesn't work running within an Access 2003 SP2 ADP. I've closed down SQL 2005 Management Studio, but the same error is displayed.
I didn't know if the problem lies in Access 2003 SP2 or SQL 2005 Express SP2.
Any takers?? (I haven't logged this Thread in an Access forum)
Any assistance is appreciated.

Hallo
i'm trying to connect a VFP DBC as a linked server on MSSQL2000sp3a, using following parameters:
Product name: VFP
Data source: \networkpath odbc
Provider: VFPOLEDB.1
No security context
I'm trying the same operation both from a W2000sp4 server (+ MDAC 2.8sp1 ?) and a WXPPsp2, against two identical copies of the DBC that resides on two different path (one on the final path and one on a test path).
From WXPPsp2 everything runs ok, from W2000 i'm always getting this error:
Error 7399: OLE/DB Provider 'VFPOLEDB' IUnknown::QueryINterface returned 0x80070005: Access Denied
(already reported in this thread, http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1832362&SiteID=1 but it didn't helped me)
The error happens independently from the user the query runs under (basicly AD account, both domain admin and normal user).
MSSQL runs under a domain account which have full permissions (for test purpose) on the directories where DBC reside.
I did no further modifications on the WXP machine in order to have the linked server running, simply it ran smoothly from the beginning.
Clearly the difference rely on the different OS... but what else?
i ran component checker to determine the MDAC version but some components version numbers slightly differs from the expected ones (eg. resulting version is 2.0.1064 versus 2.0.1022 expected in MDAC 2.8) so i suppose to have MDAC2.8 sp1 on the server.
thanks in advance

Hi Cindy,
After hours (days?) researching this, your name keeps popping up, you must be the GOTO person for VFP. So:
We have a server that runs a VFP application and stores .dbf free tables in a directory shared as F:apps ele.
I am working on an XPPro box running SQL Server Express 2005 using Management Studio Express.
I am logged on as a user with administrator rights for the domain
We would like to be able to query this data and move it to our SQL tables as needed.
Here is what I have:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'tele',
@srvproduct = 'VFP',
@provider = 'VFPOLEDB',
@datasrc = 'F:apps ele',
@provstr = 'VFPOLEDB.1'
GO
SELECT * FROM tele...PROSPECT_DIVU
Here is what I get:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "tele" reported an error. Access denied.
Msg 7301, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the required interface ("IID_IDBCreateCommand") from OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "tele".
I have tried:
exec sp_addlinkedsrvlogin
@rmtsrvname = 'tele',
@useself = false,
@locallogin = NULL,
@rmtuser = 'admin',
@rmtpassword = NULL
go
Same result.
I have also tried:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
'tele2',
'Jet 4.0',
'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'F:apps ele',
NULL,
'dBase IV'
GO
When I run:
select * from tele2...prospect_divu
I get:
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "tele2" returned message "The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'prospect_divu'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_COLUMNS" for OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "tele2". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.
What would you suggest?

I had few databases developed in SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. I have detached all the databases and stopped developing anything new other than taking reqular backup of detached .mdf and .ldf files. I installed Vista on the other Hard drive that corrupted my XP installation drive letters so I had to reinstall XP OS. I have reinstalled SQL 2005 Dev edition. Now I am trying to attach the database it is giving error of Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". I tried to copy those .mdf and .Ldf files through windows explorer and it is not letting me copy past in the other place. I am getting Access denied from OS. I have about 5 databases and only one has this problem.
What is going on and how do I solve this? Is the OS has locked the file? My home computer is not in a domain. I tried to right click the file to see if I can set access permission on the file. There is no such security options. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Vijay

I have a 2005 server that is upgraded to SP2 and the error log indicates it is version 9.00.3042.00. However, the system resource database for the same server is reporting as version 9.00.2047.00. From another post I have found out the some replication problems I am having are due to this discrepancy.
I have reapplied SP2 hoping it would change the resource db version, but it did not. Is there another way I can upgrade the resource db without re-installing SQL from scratch?
Thanks!

HI ,
This is a problem I encountered when I had to detach a database file (type .mdf):
1) I went to the MS SQL Management Server Studi and detached my database file successfully from a connection called Workhorse.
2) I needed to place the .mdf database file into a zip file in order to put it on a remote server. I did this using Shared Portal. This was also successful
3) However when I tried reattaching the database file, I got this error:
CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5A(Access denied.) while attempting to open or create the physical file "CProgram FilesMSSQL ServerMSSQLData<databasename>.mdf'
Q) The database file and log file (ldf) exist in the correct directory so I don't know what happened. Can any one help?
Thanks much
Tonante

I'm currently trying to access data from a Cache DB using MSSQL. I havelinked the Cache server through an ODBC connection. I can see in the LinkedServerexpansion all the tables in Cache for the File(?) I want to access.Here is my problem: Normally to access a linked sever I would do thefollowing:select *from ServerName.DatabaseName.dbo.TableNameI have triedselect *from ServerName.DSN.dbo.TableNameselect *from ServerName.DSN.SQLUser.TableName ("SQLUser" is the owner in Cache)None have worked (error no such object...)What is the syntax to select data on a linked sever via an ODBC connection?In the Linked server set up I have also check the RPC and RPC Out options...My ultimate goal is join tables in Cache and MSSQL into MSSQL.Any help would be greatly appreciated!Thanks,-p

We have two instances of SQL Server 2005 - SP1 installed on one server. The default instance starts very slowly. When looking at the log I can see the delay is due to Resource Manager based upon the following error.
Message
Resource Manager Creation Failed: 0x8004d102
(XACT_E_DUPLICATE_GUID)
What does this mean?
What would cause this to happen?
How do I resolve the problem?
Thanks, Dave

Hi,
I have setup a linked server to a DB2 database using "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers",
the connections works fine i am able to run select queries.
but the number of rows returned from the two following statements are different.
select * from linkedserver...tablename
select count(*) from linkedserver...tablename
e.g. The First statement returns 116 rows, whereas the second query returns count as 144....
I am a bit confused ?????
could anybody think of any possible reasons..
Cheers

I have a scenario where I want to make a linked server query and report using windows service account credential. I can able to do link query if I RDP into the Server where linked server established using the service account and run query successfully but local client SSMS with my credential fails connecting linked server or querying. Looks to be a sql double hoping problem if so configuration each client domain account to enable delegation will be challenging as mentioned in the following articles instead service account only might work if possible.

Hi,
I have a msaccess linked server that I use to execute sql 2000 stored procedures from a front end in adp (access data project) format without any problem, if it is used on the same machine where the sql server resides (with any user logged on). In any other machine on the local network where I also need to use it, I get an ole/db error message saying that the microsoft jet database engine can not open the file because it's allready opened exclusivly or because it do not has permissions. I created the linked server with both UNC and normal path with the same result.
Thank's for all the help/clues you can give me.

If i copy the database to a folder on the server that SQL is installed, it works fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is the error message that I'm receiving.

We are setting up a new box and when we deploy the cube we are getting the error "File system error: The following error occured during a file operation: Access is denied. ."
We are part of an AD group that is a member of the administrators group on the box, and it looks like we have rights to the data directory where AS deploys cube data to. The account that AS service runs as is also an administrator on the box. It is a domain account. The cube does have one assembly - might that be the problem? We have set up a few boxes in the past without problems - we didn't have control over how this box was setup, so obviously we are missing a permission. If anyone has any insights / ideas, I'm all ears.
Thanks!
John
