I have been developing an app using SQL Server 2000 and am ready to transfer to a server located offsite. How can I connect to this server through enterprise manager or anything else so that I can use the copydatabase wizard to move it to the live server?

I have a VPS running Win2003 64bit and have setup my ASP forum on it (I also have SQLExpress 2005 installed on the VPS) - I have a SQL DataBase running on an external server which my old host setup for me and the old forum has been using... Now all I want to do is for my ASP forum on my server to connect to this external SQL DB... How easy!? Well not for me ..

I have changed the connection string to include the port number 1433
(Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=THEIPADDRESS,1433;Initial Catalog=DB;User ID=xxxxx;Password=xxxx;)
I can ping the IP address of the external SQL Server with no problems
On my server I have enabled TCP/IP in SQLExpress & added sqlservr.exe as an exception in the Firewall
I have even tried turning the Firewall off completely while I tried to connect - But still nothing.
If anyone can help me I would be very appreciated.... I am starting to tear my hair out as I can't think what else I need to do???

hi there - I'm praying someone here can shed some light on this - after many google and web searches, I have found users with similar issues, but have yet to find a solution.
Problem: I have recently upgraded my desktop from Windows XP to Windows Vista Ultimate (clean install) and have migrated my local machine to SQL Server 2005. However I have a number of .Net projects that access databased on another server running SQL Server 2000 - prior to my upgrade to Vista, I was running SQL Server 2000 on my desktop as well. During the install, everything seemed to go well, and I also installed the SQL Server 2005 Service pack as instructed via the MSDN site. However, when attempting to test my .net projects on my desktop pc (ie visit http://localhost), I encounter the error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
note that the server I am attempting to connect TO is the old SQL 2000 server - NOT 2005. I specify my connection info in the web.config - and it points to an external ip address on the web.
Can anyone shed some light on this? I've tried enabling remote access on my local SQL 2005 install, but I'm fairly sure thats for servers that want to connect to my desktop, rather than my desktop attempting to connect to external servers. Any help is greatly appreciated - I'm pulling my hair out over trying to figure this out! :)

I'm trying to develop an application for a friend, who has his own server and SQL 2005 setup on it Is it possible to add a connection to an externally hosted SQL Database using VWD2008? I have a login and password for it, I just don't know where I set the IP address to connect to and the name of the DB etc...?Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure whether this is right section to post this. It seems the most relevant one to me. (Please point me in the right direction if it is not).
I am a programmer/web developer for a medium sized organisation in the financial industry (in Australia). Obviously being in the finance industry, we have very strict guidelines and access when it comes to security. We are currently in the process of converting our website to use a SQL Server database (instead of MS Access which we have been using for years). In the past, we have accessed our web database via SFTP as it was only an Access file. Now that we are converting to SQL Server, we will still need access to our database (which is on a server hosted externally). It seems a bit silly (and even bizarre) to me to consider trying to access a SQL Server database via SFTP (as that, to me, defeats the purpose of some of its security features), but is it even possible?
My security guys here will only allow me to access the external server that hosts our website/database via SFTP (on a machine that is outside our network, so any files that I wish to update on our website I need to copy over via USB or whatever). If I am not able to get into the SQL Server administrator program to change our database via SFTP, is there someway that I can "drop" a changed copy of our database into a directory somewhere that SQL Server can "pick up"?
Am I making sense?

Is it possible to add an external server registration using SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP?
Reason being I have been doing some work from home and need to port the data back to the office who are on SQL 2000. I have a database with my web hosting company and wanted to export the data to the 'live' database so I could import to the office database - any ideas?
I've tried to connect using my login details and I know the live DB is operational as I can connect through my work system. I just can't seem to be able to do it on my system at home.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's been a real pain to get stuff transferred. I've so far had to generate SQL script to create the procs and tables for when I get to work - the proper down side is that I lose the content of the tables which not much right now but will be loads soon!

I have just dicovered that the CTP management studio will not connect to SQL 7 - is there any alternative or does the new version compensate for this?
The reason that I would like to install SQL Server Express on an external hard drive is for portability. I am developing a database that I will be working on in the office and at home. At the current time, I do not have a laptop at the office (and I don't want to use my personal laptop for this project). I need a way to develop and test the database both at home and at the office.
I was wondering if anyone knows if this crazy idea would work. I am also thinking of doing the same with Visual Studio Express. Since there are no licensing violations to speak of for these software packages, it would seem like this could work.
Any thoughts?

I am trying to invoke a webservice method when a specific record gets updated in my sql db table. I am planning on writing a trigger on the table, that would invoke the webservice when the event occurs. But I am not sure how to accomplish this. Any ideas/suggestion would be very helpful.

If you for example has an oracle database on a UNIX or VMS-system and want
to move table data from a table in the oracle database to the SQL-server database.
There must be plenty of tools to do that via ODBC.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have generated a DLL file in VC++ 2005 by a 'C' file. It works fine when I put in a 32bits machine(32bits Windows Server 2003 + 32 bits SQL Server 2005).
However, when I build it into 64 bits, it doesn't work in a 64 bits machine. I have checked by Dependenct Walker, the DLL generated is linked with KERNEL32.DLL / OPENDS60.DLL / MSVCR80D.DLL, all of these DLL files are on the 64 bits machines and linked correctly.
I used the command
sp_addextendedproc 'abc', 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLBinnabc.dll'
to create a ext. stored procedure. When I run it, the error message shows that
Could not load the DLL C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLBinnabc.dll, or one of the DLLs it references. Reason: 126(error not found).
I would like to ask what is cause of the problem? Do I need to use CLR instead?

I need to create a SQL server database and add some tables to it. Then access it with a C# application. The problem is that the new SQL server database and it's tables must reside on an external hard drive. How do I point SQL server to this external drive, so that I can create a database on this drive and then create tables and access data on it?

I've been having trouble configuring the Report Server e-mail delivery component to send subscription e-mails to addresses outside the domain on which the report server is hosted.
For e.g. since my local windows domain is named "smartsystems.com", I have found that the Report Manager does not have any problems sending subscription mails to "eawagu@smartsystems.com" but throws up an error whenever I include "eawagu@yahoo.com" in the recipients' list.
Any insights?

Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.
I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated. When I click on the connect button to connect to a server it never connects. I can not cancel once I press connect. It never times out after I press connect. I removed all registered servers that were registered previously. I have uninstalled all software that involved sql server (and sql2000) run a registry cleaner(not microsofts), installed the software to a new directory and still I can not connect to the sql2005 server (the only db).
Any ideas?

I have already installed to my computer Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and SQL Serves Express. I used to be successful to connect to the SQL Server but now I CAN NOT.
Not: I try to run SQL Server 2005 but I can not, even I logged on to my computer with an administrator rights. On the other hand I can start and stop the SQL Server Express easily.

My environment:

I'm about to go absolutely nuts. I've tried so many things including:
1) Of course making sure Remote connections and both TCP/IP and named pipes are enabled for SQL 2005
2) Verified my connection string works. I even tested it in Enterprise Library using the tool and it connects successfully via windows authentication
3) Made sure of course my logged in user is a member of the administrator group and that my user in SQL 2005 logins has db_owner and full rights to the DB I am connecting to. I also made sure the NT AUTHORITY as well as the 3 sql service users have db_owner rights as well as the adminstrator in the SQL Server logins all have db_owner to the DB
4) Started the SQL Server Browser service, SQL Server DB engine, and SQL Server Agent
5) Made sure my site is setup right in IIS 7. I checked the connection string in there as well as it shows up in IIS7 in one of the sections. Using Windows authentication and it is enabled for my site
6) Tried running the .net site using both localhost (IIS) and also tried using the Visual Studio built-in web server. Both give this message still

What I checked so far:
ServerName and Instance Name OK!
Database, Username and password OK!
SQL Server 2005 Surface Are Configuration - Remote connections using both TCP/IP and Pipe Names OK!
SQL Configuration Manager - Protocolos Enabled (TCP/IP, Pipes, shared) OK!
SQL Server Browse running and active OK!
Am I missing something? I never had this problem with SQL Server 2000 and Visual Studio 2003.

After I installed sql server 2005 64bit standard edition on Windows Server Enterprise 2008 64bit, I cannot connect to the sql instance using the sql management studio on the same machine!
I verified that:
service is running,
in surface area configuration: remote connections to local and remote are enabled, for TCP/IP and named pipes.
ran the command netstat -avn| findstr 49279 to make sure that the server is listening.
firewall is off, but this does not matter since I'm connecting locally to local instance
I'm using domain controller account to login to sql server / also tried the sa account.
what else can be wrong?

I need to connect to a SQL server thats running in say abc.trident.com and also sits in a shared environment..
I have couple of questions
1) That SQL server is accessible from my network, yet when I swtich on my enterprise manager I am unable to view that in the list of running SQL servers in the populated list.
Is it because its sitting in a shared environment I am unable to view that?
2) What is the connection striing I should use to connect to the server..When I try to configure a SQL server registrations it normally asks for SQL Server name along with the user authentication
Should I mention fill the Server: field as
abc.trident.com
or
// abc.trident.com/abc.trident.com
to connect to the clustered server.
Can some one tell me the proper connection string if both aforementioned ones are incorrect?

I have a msaccess linked server that I use to execute sql 2000 stored procedures from a front end in adp (access data project) format without any problem, if it is used on the same machine where the sql server resides (with any user logged on). In any other machine on the local network where I also need to use it, I get an ole/db error message saying that the microsoft jet database engine can not open the file because it's allready opened exclusivly or because it do not has permissions. I created the linked server with both UNC and normal path with the same result.

When my default.aspx page loads I get this error for the connection to my SQL 2005 DB. An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that
under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL
Server) I have already gone to Surface Area Configuration to ensure that Remoting with both Named Pipes or TCP/IP is enabled and it's set to both for remoting.I verified that my local account has access to the DB.Not sure what else to check.
