Connecting To Database - Object Reference Not Set Error Message
Feb 11, 2005
I've got code that on my own machine (visual studio .net 2003 and iis and sql server all exist on this box) works great. I display my test page, which loads a dropdownlist on page_load. This works great on my own machine.
When I move the code to our dev environment. Web server and database servers on separate boxes. I get the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when i try to open the connection to the database. I thought it had to do with permissions and I check all through sql server and everything looks great. I then thought it was the connection string. I still haven't ruled this out, but I wrote a quick vbscript app to attach to the database and try to pull a record. The vbscript worked fine. So, the code works fine on my computer, but not on the web server. The connection does work with vbscript, but through my asp.net web app I get the "object reference" error.
I have migrated an existing ASP.net 1.1 application into ASP.net 2.0. After correcting the reported errors and warnings the application builds without any errors. I have a login page for users (AuthorLogin.aspx) that receives input from the user and checks the database to determine if the user is valid. If the user is in the database they are directed to a navigation page. The SqlDataAdapter used to access the SQL 2000 database causes the above error when I try to pass parameters to it using the input by the user. The dataadapter was added on the using the component designer for the AuthorLogin.aspx page. The parameters are the user's email address and a password. The dataadapter fills a dataset. If the dataset's rows are >0 then the user is redirected. The dataadapter and dataset are declare on the.vb code behind page as "protected with events...." Here is the code I am using. Public Sub AuthorLoginValidate() 'use the email and password text values as parameters DA_AuthorLogin.SelectCommand.Parameters.Item("@AuthorEmail").Value = AuthorLoginEmail.Text DA_AuthorLogin.SelectCommand.Parameters.Item("@AuthorPassword").Value = AuthorLoginPassword.Text MDData.Open() DA_AuthorLogin.Fill(DS_AuthorLogin, "T_Author") MDData.Close() 'if the database has an existing record then add session objects and redirect If DS_AuthorLogin.T_Author.Rows.Count > 0 Then Session.Add("AuthorAlias", DS_AuthorLogin.T_Author.Rows(0).Item("AuthorAlias")) Session.Add("PreferredName", DS_AuthorLogin.T_Author.Rows(0).Item("PreferredName")) Session.Add("LastName", DS_AuthorLogin.T_Author.Rows(0).Item("LastName")) Response.Redirect("AuthorPaths.aspx") Else : AuthorLoginNotValid.Visible = True Exit Sub End If End Sub Steps I have taken.
Reordered the parameters. Whichever parameter occurs first in the code throws the error Set the parameters to a string instead of the user's input. The error still occurs. Previewed the data to make sure the dataadapter and dataset are working correctly. They are. Double-clicked the dataadapter and dataset to determine if the .vb code page will open with a new sub for the dataadapter or datatable. It does. Declared the dataadapter explicitly at the beginning of the code. "Dim DA_AuthorLogin as new system.data.sqlclient......... You get the idea. This causes a warning that the dataadapter has not been assigned a value. I don't want to assign a value. I want to retrieve data. I have tried to use the datasource control but this seems designed specifically for the datagrid, datalist, etc and it must be assigned a value I have tried to use a dataset designed to use a datatableadapter and a datatable. This throws the same error. I found a MSDN KB article that said to register the adodb file in the configured assemblies. I ran this command line as stated. It did not help. This code worked well in my .net 1.1 application. I know other data adapters work in the application. Help please. What will work? I am about to go back to my .net 1.1 application and forget Visual Studio.net 2005 simply because I cannot access the data. Thanks, David
Does any one has any clue for this error ? I did went through a lot of articles on this error but none helped . I am working in Visual studie 2005 and trying to upload image in sql database through a simple form. Here is the code

When I add a new item to project in VS2005: Project-->Add New Item --> Sql Database I got a error msg "object reference not set to an instance of an object" after click "Add" button. The SQL Server Express is running. How do I fix this problem?
Help! I have posted this before and I had hoped that the VS2005 SP1 would help my problem. It didn't. My code is shown below. I have dropped a sqlconnection, sqldataadapter and a strongly-typed dataset from the toolbox onto the component designer for my page and written my code. It compiles without any errors but at runtine I receive the system error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." The error occurs at the first line where the sqldataadapter is mentioned. I have shufflled the code and the error still occurs at first mention of the dataadapter. I have set parameters to a simple string such as "myemail." It hasn't helped. I have used the "Dim" statement as "Dim DaAuthorLogin as System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataadapter and Dim DaAuthorLogin as New ......) at the start of the private sub generated by the event requiring the data. Nothing helps. Here is my simple code to select data from a sqlserver 2000 database. Why do I continue to get this error? I am trying to develop a custom algorithm. I have implemented and tested training methods, however I fail at prediction phase. When I try to run a prediction query against a model created with my algorithm I get:
Executing the query ... Obtained object of type: Microsoft.AnalysisServices.AdomdClient.AdomdDataReader COM error: COM error: DMPluginWrapper; Object reference not set to an instance of an object.. Execution complete
I know this is not very descriptive, but I have seen that algorith doesn't even executes my Predict(..) function (I can test this by logging to a text file) So the problem is this, when I run prediction query DMPluginWrapper gives exception -I think- even before calling my custom method.
As I said it is not a very descriptive message but I hope I have hit a general issue.
Just installed VS 2005 & SQLServer 2005 clients on my workstation. When trying to create a new Integration Services Project and start work in the designer receive the MICROSOFT VISUAL STUDIO 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object.' dialog box with message "Creating project 'Integration Services project1'...project creation failed."
Previously I had SQLServer 2000 client with the little VS tool that came with it installed. Uninstalled these prior to installing the 2005 tools (VS and SQLServer).
I'm not finding any information on corrective action for this error.
I am trying to execute this code feom Script task while excuting its giving me error that "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." The assemblies Iam referening in this code are there in GAC. Any idea abt this.
Thanks,

For the life of me I cannot figure out why i'm getting the "Object Refence Not Set To an Instance of An Object" error after I try and create a Report Services project in Business Intelligence Studio. I've followed all of the steps in similar posts such as checking the ReportServer/web.config file but everything checks out.
Does anyone have any other ideas as to how I can get rid of this annoying error and start creating some reports?

Hi There Let me start by explaining what I am trying to achieve as there may be a better way to perform this. I have two databases and I want to refer to four tables - one in one database and three in the other in a sql select statement. When I use the query builder in VWD I can only see tables for the database that is defined in the connection string - so therefore how do I add tables from another database? After reading a few posts I realized that all I have to do is use the syntax: database.owner.table (or [database].[owner].[table]). Unfortunately this didn't work and came up with the error "Invalid Object Name". Assuming that I must have got the owner incorrect I used the Query Tool in SQL Server Express Edition and it worked perfectly! So my sql must be correct, but why will it not work inside VWD? The two databases are named assessment and aspnetdb - the assessment database contains the table reviews and the aspnetdb database contains the tables TutorDetails, EmployerDetails and StudentDetails. Here is the connection string and sql: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Assessment.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True SELECT Reviews.Programme, aspnetdb.dbo.TutorDetails.Tutor_DisplayName AS [Tutor Name], aspnetdb.dbo.EmployerDetails.DisplayName AS [Employer Name], aspnetdb.dbo.StudentDetails.Student_DisplayName AS [Student Name] FROM Reviews INNER JOIN aspnetdb.dbo.StudentDetails ON Reviews.StudentID = aspnetdb.dbo.StudentDetails.Username INNER JOIN aspnetdb.dbo.EmployerDetails ON Reviews.EmployerID = aspnetdb.dbo.EmployerDetails.UserName INNER JOIN aspnetdb.dbo.TutorDetails ON Reviews.TutorID = aspnetdb.dbo.TutorDetails.UserName WHERE (Reviews.ReviewID = 15) Disregard the value of '15' in the WHERE statement as this was just put in to ensure I got some valid data back, this will be replaced with a variable eventually. I know the sql statement works properly, I think the problem may be something to do with either the connection string - any ideas would be much appreciated. Regards Stuart

Hi Everyone, Please help me on this issue. I'm a new SSIS User. I've installed Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition When I create a new SSIS Project in Business Intelligence Development Studio, I get the following message: "Microsoft Visual Studio is unable to load this document: Object reference is not set to an instance of an object". Error loading 'package.dtsx'bject reference is not set to an instance of an object When I try to debug the package, I get the below message: parameter Component(System.Design) is null. I've uninstalled and installed SS 2005 several times, yet the problem persists. Please help. This is the package.dtsx
I'm getting this problem 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object.' whenever I try to review a report and I checked the log file and this is what it had

Some previous forums stated checking the webconfig file but the web config file look okay. Is there another way to fix this.
I've ran into trouble while creating a rather simple transformation script component (one input, one output). The only thing it has to do is test the values coming from it's input rows and set the values of the output rows according to some rules; something like:
Code Block
Public Overrides Sub InputBrowser_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As InputBrowserBuffer)
If Row.UserAgent.Contains("MSIE") Then 'test input Row.BrowserName = "Internet Explorer" 'set output End If
End Sub
This raises an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." exception. Commenting out the input (Row.UserAgent) solves the exception, but I actually do need to test the contents of the input row (and by leaving only the output manipulation, the script won't reach it's end, the components remain yellow). What can I do about this?
Has there been any fix for this bug? The workaround in the KB article did not work for me and I cannot run my entire application from the Windows directory even if it did.
Please help.

Hi, I've got the error message below: "Error 80040E2F. A duplicate value cannot be inserted into a unique index [Table name=_SysRDASubscriptions, Constraint name=c_LocalTableName]"
I'm using SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition and still cannot solve the problem although the KB article (920272) said it is fixed in V3.1.
What I need to do is to drop a table and then Pull it again to the PDA but it gives me that error message during pull method. However, I can use the same process to drop and pull other tables and works fine. Will that be the problem related to primary key or to the data of the table?
Hi, I am deploying my web through a web hosting services which provides SQL database support. I got following errors whenever I try to open my webpage, which never happen when I run my web on the local machine. I have my connection string configured in my web.config as below: <add name="ArtHouseConnection" connectionString="Server=serveripaddress; Integrated Security=True; Database=arteh3_database;User Id=username;Password=password;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> <add name="ASPNETDBConnectionString1" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> This is the source code where error was generated: public static class ArtHouseConfiguration { //cache connection string private readonly static string dbConnectionString; //cache data provider name private readonly static string dbProviderName; private readonly static string siteName; //initialize constructor properties static ArtHouseConfiguration() { dbConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ArtHouseConnection"].ConnectionString; dbProviderName = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ArtHouseConnection"].ProviderName; siteName = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["SiteName"]; } and finally this is the error mg I got: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I have successfully implemented forms authentication, that means, I can access it from a web browser, get the login page, add my credentials and log on to Reporting Services.
But now I try to access reporting services Web service from a winforms app, doing something like this:
The first three lines works fine, but he last line (ListChildren) throws a "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exception. I have enabled remote error and looked in the RS log files, but nowhere I can find where this null-pointer exception occured.
