Connection Problem With My Hosting Account - Please Help
May 27, 2008
Greetings!
I have a web app that uses the asp.net 2.0 membership provider. Well, as you probably know, the connection string is created in the machine file and the one that I have is this:<connectionStrings>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|problemsolvingmatrix.mdf;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
Of course, when I uploaded my web app to my hosting account, they told me that I would have to change it to this:
StrConnString = "Provider=SQLNCLI;Server=localhost;Database=YourDatabaseName;UID=Username;PWD=YourPassword"
They do allow remote connections and that have sent me ticket showing me that the remote connection works. Now, how can I change this in my application? Do I need to overwrite this information in the web.config file? if so, how can I do this? In addition, they are asking me for a user name and apssword and I haven't created this.
Thanks,
Eduardo

Hi All,
We are using the Windows Task Scheduler as a substitute for the SQL Server Agent, which isn't available in the Express edition. The scheduled task just calls a batch file, which in turn, runs a stored procedure using osql with the -E option for a Trusted Connection.
SQL Server Express has been installed using the defaults, which means the service is running in the "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" account. The scheduled task we create is set to run using the "NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" account.
Now we find that on Windows Vista (tested using Ultimate Edition) that the scheduled task fails to run the stored procedure until the machine is rebooted the first time after installing SQL Server Express. When I say "fail", I mean that the stored procedure isn't executed. The scheduled task however completes and reports no errors. On Windows XP, we do not run into this problem so I suspect it has something to do with the UAC in Vista?
We further found that after installing SQL Server Express and creating the scheduled task in the "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" account, the scheduled task (and stored procedure) runs fine WITHOUT requiring a reboot.
Can anyone explain why a reboot is needed to get SQL Server Express to run the scheduled task correctly under Windows Vista and the SYSTEM account?
Any help or thoughts greatly appreciated.

I'd like to do this:Have a SQL Server database hosted on a public facing web server.I want it to be held at an ISP/Web hosting company. Though I have ADSL hereI don't want to manage a server.I want some ASP pages accessing the database.I would also like for a very small number (probably 2) of users to accessthe database from a richer client. Perhaps Access/VB.I've tried using www.shanje.com, as a test. It seems to work, though thereare worries about security.I want to keep cost down!On 'normal' shared MS hosting, would it be possible to connect to the dbfrom a client like Access. The way most web hosts talk it doesn't look likeit. Is there any way of providing a richer client interface than plain webpages? I want things like autocomplete (beyond the first character) for dropdowns, keyboard shortcuts etc. This would be low volume. Essentially a private database held on theinternet.Yours, Jo

Hey,
I have a asp.net 2.0 app that has a sql server express backend. I have been scratching my head for weeks trying to find a good wasy to encrypt my connection string. I store the string in web.config (which in itself is in theory "safe" because it's not servable) and I have scoured the web to try to find a simple way to encrypt the connection string. Even using user store would require running aspreg_iis.exe on the host with a command prompt (which clearly I cannot do). It seems that everyone's solution requires running a command prompt executable on the server.
So I am left to wonder what everyone else does. I am not comfortable using just the web.config because a determined hacker could get to that info. Then again, a determined hacker could get into any system , I guess. There are no credit card #'s stored in this app, but in theory there must be a way. I run all access to the db through stored procedures with permissions, for whatever it's worth.
Thanks in advance!
David

During install of SQL Server 2005, we can of course use a domain account or the built-in system account for running the services. I lean toward domain for obvious reaons but would like to know a +/- to each option and why I'd choose one over the other and what consequences or limitations one may encounter if I choose one over the other.

Now you all must admit that, if your somewhat new to this databasing, It's a ***.
The source for my application is Visual Web Designer 2005 Express
It is an ASP.Net driven site with membership roles and all the good stuff.
the latest theory is that I need to change the provider config in the web.config file from AspNetSqlProvider
to something else. Most of my complications and frustrations come from GoDaddy and no access to the
shared server (understandibly).
I hope I gave enough info for help and not too much..

I have a SQL .bak generated by our existing hosting package at 1and1.com, I want to import that SQL .bak to our new hosting package at ixwebhosting.com.
ixwebhosting.com don't have a import feature in their control panel.
I have to maintain the SQL at ixwebhosting.com using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express since they don't have that feature in their cp. I don't see any import features in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express either.
How can I import it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express or another free GUI program?

I have been running a script in SQL Server 2000 as sa also as a Active Directory user who has administrator rights (I tested both approaches SQL Server then Windows Authentication) in Query Analyser which grants execute rights to the stored procedures within the database instance and Query Analyser does not give any errors when I run the script. I have made sure that each transaction has a go after it. I then return to Enterprise Manager, check the rights (I apply them to roles so that when we create another SQL Server user we just grant him/her rights to the role) and discover that the role has not been granted the rights. I seems to be occurring only with 2 of the procedures. Is there a known bug that might be causing this?
yours sincerely

Hi all, i hope you can help me.
Basically a dts package has been setup that pulls in data from another companies server, this data requires to be on-demand i.e individual users can pull in updates of the data when they require it.
I am using xp_cmdshell and dtsrun to pull in the data. This obviouly works fine for me as i am a member of sysadmin.
Books online quotes " SQL Server Agent proxy accounts allow SQL Server users who do not belong to the sysadmin fixed server role to execute xp_cmdshell"
So i went to the SQL Server Agent Properties 'Job System' tab and unchecked 'Non-sysadmin job step proxy account' and entered a proxy account.
The proxy account has been setup as a Windows user with local administrator privilages and even a member of the sysadmin server role - just in case.
Now when i log onto the db with my test account - a non-sysadmin - and attempt to run the stored proc to import the data i recieved the message 'EXECUTE permission denied on object 'xp_cmdshell', database 'master', owner 'dbo' '
hmm... so basically i have either misunderstood BoL or there is something not quite right in my setup.
I have search the net for a few days now and yet i can find no solution.
Can anyone help?

Hi there,BOL notes that in order for replication agents to run properly, theSQLServerAgent must run as a domain account which has privledges to loginto the other machines involved in replication (under "SecurityConsiderations" and elsewhere). This makes sense; however, I waswondering if there were any repercussions to using duplicate localaccounts to establish replication where a domain was not available.Anotherwords, create a local windows account "johndoe" on both machines(with the same password), grant that account access to SQL Server onboth machines, and then have SQL Server Agent run as "johndoe" on bothmachines. I do not feel this is an ideal solution but I havecircumstances under which I may not have a domain available; mypreliminary tests seem to work. Also, are there any similar considerations regarding the MSSQLSERVERservice, or can I always leave that as local system?Dave

I have a situation that I have discovered in our QA database that I need to resolve. When I looked at the Activity Monitor for our server, I discovered that a process is running under a domain user account for one of our .Net applications. The problem is that that domain user account has not been created as a SQL login account on the server. I am trying to figure out how someone can log in to the database server with a domain user account that has not been added to SQL Server as a login account.
Does anyone have any insight on this? I don't like the idea of someone being able to create domain account that can access the database without me granting them specific access.

I am trying to export from an SQL Server on a hosting company to my own computer using DTS. I'm new to SQL Server manipulations like this so please go easy on me...
I can't seem to manage to do this properly - If I select "Copy tables & data only" it will not copy the identity constraints and primary keys. If I select "copy all objects" it starts giving me permission issues which I cannot seem to resolve, because I guess the tables on the hosting server are owned by my username up there, but when they come to my computer they are orphant?
Isn't there an easy way to do this? It's a very simple database, tables and that's it, not even any stored procedures.

I'm new to databases... thats why I'm accustomed to using the simplicity of ipowerweb or mediatemple and their phpmyadmin interface.
Anyway... what do I do? Will a database hosted elsewhere work? If you know about this stuff, please help.. I may not be asking the right questions!

Hi
I have experience only designing an implementing DB in sql2000 but not too much administering.
My app is a Web Service that communicate with my DB.
The DB is in a hosting company, so I don€™t have too much permissions to play with.
The application have been the same for at least one year, no changes at all but recently my users complaint that the system was not working/responding.
I immediately thought about excessive load
When I went to query analyze and execute the command (sp_who), I saw that 173 processes where sleeping €“ awaiting command
that is the only thing I can imagine was the problem(not sure yet). I investigated and found the Kill process instruction but I was not able to run it because permission.
Based in this scenario How can I give a fast CPR to drain my DB and allow my user to work?
Any link?
Any sug?
thanks

Does anyone use One and One Internet (UK) for their hosting?
I use them and when I published my site all membership feautures wouldn't work, I called the One and One support and they said that their servers only support SQL Databases if they were created using their own tool in their control panels.
How would I get my site to use their database, I'm really not sure.
If anyone else could help me out I'd be grateful.

Hi all!
One good thing about access databases is the ability to upload the .mdb file to a hosting server and not being charged for database space.
How about MSDE? Does it require SQLServer hosting or can it be done just by uploading the database file?

I have established roles to restrict access to the data
entry pages. The database is SQL Server which I've established on the hosting server. Security was previously maintained through
~/app_data/aspnetdb.mdb (MS Access). It works, but isn't too stable, so I have modified the security to use
SQL Server with an aspnetdb.mdf file, also located in the app_data
folder. Is this appropriate? Since it doesn't work, I assume not. It's now my assumption that I need to setup a SQL Server
database to support the security/roles. I have seen some reference to
using a script to build the aspnet.mdf on the hosting server. If
I do create such a database, is there anything special I need to do to
have my application read the aspnetdb? Do I need a connection string
in the membership and/or roleManager sections of my web.config.
A little guidance would be appreciated. Thanks
