Connection Timeout

In one of my applications I want to set a connection timeout to 1 second when connecting to the SQL Server. .NET's SqlConnection already has connectiontimeout property as readonly and set to 15 seconds. So I cant use it. And if I use adodb.dll and its ADODB.Connection, this time I can set the objects connectiontimeout property. However, it just doesn't work. It still waits along time even though I set the connectiontimeout to 1 second. The same goes when you try the same thing in Delphi.

Anyone has any idea about this problem?

Ok bear with me here :). I have a server that is getting about 1000000 hits per day with about 10,000 unique vistors. For the past 2 months I have been revamping my code trying to deal with the increase in traffic. I have 2 boxes, one for the website, and one for the SQL. They are connected through a secure backlink so that I dont have to worry about encrypting the data. So the problem started when I updated the MDAC components a few weeks ago. I started getting these freaking timeout errors, they are up to about 1000 errors per hour. I have been monitoring the connection pooling using the system monitor for about a week and have noticed that I am not maxing out the pooling but I am still dropping connections. I went into the web.config and turned my max connections to 1000. Unfortunately this didn't even put a dent in the problem. It doesn't matter if I have 12 or 212 open connections it still drops them. I am at my wits end with trying to debug this problem. I am wondering if anyone else has had similiar problems recently. Also on a side note I have checked all my connections to make sure that I am closing them. Not only do I close my datareaders but I also set them to nothing. In addition to closing and reseting my datareaders I am also disposing and reseting my connection objects as well as closing them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And what is the difference between General TimeOut and Command TimeOut?

         I am working on an intranet application that executes a very intenstive stored procedure and, on average, takes approximately 30mins to complete execution.  I set the connection timeout property of my connection string to 1900 (31 mins) and <httpRuntime executionTimeout=n> to 1900 as well.  The application fails almost immedately giving me this error:

I tried to check the current activity log through Enterprise Manager but was unable to as I got an error saying that it was locked however once 31 mins expired, the lock was removed?  Any ideas on how to resolve these issues?

Connection Timeout

We recently moved our SQL Server to a faster machine. Everything is working great except every once in a while we get a connection timeout to the sql server. Everything else seems to be performing better but that initial connection is taking longer.

I realize this could be caused by a great deal of things, but if anybody has any suggestions I would appriciate it.

Connection Timeout

Hi, I have a client application that submits heavy processing query to an instance of Sql Server 2005 (Enteriprise Edition). After a few seconds the following exception is raised: "The time available has expired before the completion of the operation or the server is not responding". If I submit to the same application light processing queries the exception is not raised.
The client application is written in VB.net and uses ADO.net. (SqlConnection, SqlCommand,.. classes). The "Timeout connection" property is set to 1000.
Any suggestion?

Connection Timeout - Need Help

Hello,

My app uses sql express on the client work station and has been installed by our application installer as a part of the prerequisites. The sql express install in standard and we've not changed any settings or brought in any tweaks.

All is well in our dev center. However, some of our clients are experiencing a problem when the app starts up. After the PC has been restarted, running the application causes it to crash with a connection time out. However, running it a second time will work with absolutely no issues.

Overall - after a restart, the first sql express connection will time out. I had a post on this earlier here -> http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=93279&SiteID=1

MS Lee had suggested -- > "As for the first connection failing and subsequent connections succeeding, one potential cause is the cached last connect information. If you're connecting to a named instance and not specifying a port, then the client will determine the port by querying SQL Browser on the server"

I'm not using a remote sql express. It is running on the local machine. My connection string looks like -->

"Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;Data Source=.SQLExpress;AttachDBFilename=<%USERS_LOCAL_FOLDER%>;"

What may be the problem ? Any help/advise will be great. I'll need to sort this out ASAP.

These days i met a problem regarding a SQL connection.

i try to create an ODBC to a SQL server, and everytime a prompt of timeout error appear. Detailly it is that...connection failure,SQLState:'HYT00'...
i am sure the logon username and password are right... and i can make it in some machines, but it is surprised that i got failure on the other machines(a error appear just like what i mention above)...i don't know how... i guess something wrong in those machines error showed.

Server Connection Timeout

I have been facing a ridiculous problem that I am able to connect SSMS but can't work properly in a particular server. It throws the following error message.

A transport-level error has occured when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:121)

There are total 13 SQL Servers in my work station. I can access and work on rest 12 servers via SSMS. I can remotely access that server and get reply from ping.I have restarted SQL Server & SQL Agent Services. Even I have restarted the server itself. But no result yet.

Connection Timeout Problem

Hello,

I have to transfer lets say once a day arround 30 000 records from one table into another. The query uses cursor and should check if the record exists to make update, otherwise to make insert.

On this ammount of data, in visual studio I get Connection Timeout. I even unselected "Cancel long running query" in Tools/Options/Database tools, and I still get timeout. When using Sql Server management studio it works and it takes long time. I know that this query executes long time, but it will run in the middle of the night and nobody will bother.

I could have transfered this data in the application and then return it to the database one by one, but why unnecesary transport?

How do I get the stored procedure running without this timeout?

I have a problem witht the database connection to my device. We are developing an application for Smart Devices using VS2005 and the device runs Windows Mobile 6.0. When application runs, initially it is successful in creating the database and communicating with it smoothly. But if the device is left idle for more than 20 to 30 minutes the connection to the database looses. I'm not sure if the database enginer goes down after this idle time. Can anybody please let me know the solution/workaround for this.

Hi All,I'm having a bit of a problem with a c# program which creates and index file/table. The number of records I need to process is around 3500, the main loop. Each of thoes records I need  to look at a 2 text fields and create an entry in an index table for each valid word found in thoes fields. I call a stored proc to save the key word. Timeout Issue While Openning An Connection

Hi,I'm currently have an issue with an asp.net 2 application where it times out while trying to open a connection to a sql server 2005 database located on another machine.  The strange thing is that an asp.net 1.1 application running on the same server works fine.  So as an experiment I switch the asp.net 1.1 application to run as an asp.net 2 application and I ran into the same issue were it could not connect to the SQL server database.My thoughts are that it could be one of two things:Firstly the files for the both web sites are sitting on a network share so I had to change asp.net default permissions for both versions to get them working this far.  So my theory is that they is another permission I need to change to get this working.  So on Monday when I'm back in work I'll try running the asp.net 2 application from the local disk to see if this solves the problem.Secondly that the System.Data.SqlClient class using a different port/portucol(sp) to talk to the SQL server database in asp.net 2 than asp.net 1.1 and this is causing the problem and the port is blocked my a firewall.Does anyone have any ideas or suggests of what I could try to resolve this?ThanksNeil

I use SqlHelper to connect to database. I need to set a timeout to execute some sp because I don´t want to wait for this sp if it make me wait a lot. So I set the Connection TimeOut every time I execute a sp. But this seems not working properly. I set this value to 5 and I execute a sp than runs in 15 but It waits for it.

What's The Idle Timeout Of SQL Login Connection?

Hi.. I have application which is connected to my SQL 2000 database. Normally our users use Terminal service to the SQL 2000 and application (same box) remotely and connect to the database. But some time the connection break and I have idle login stuck there.

For example, if I use sp_who, I can see many logins still login to DB even they are out. And sometimes I see duplicate logins too even there is only one person using that login to logon to DB. Is there a way to find out what is the idle timeout of the user login session??

Is that under SQL server properties -->remote server connections-->Query time-out--> >> sec ?

Is there a way to limit only 1 session can be allow for each login ??

Context Connection And Command Timeout

I'm using a context connect inside a CLR stored procedure. The CommandTimeout property has no functionality when used with a context connection. See remarks in this url:

This is a problem for me because I'm at times call a link server that has been known to wait indefinitely. I've tried using a regular conneciton that supports command timeouts within my CLR stored procedure but I get a permissions error (Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0,0, Culture=neutral failed.)

How can I prevent my CLR stored procedure from waiting indefinitely?

Timeout Of ADO.NET Connection To SQL Server 2005.

I am experiencing a very odd timeout when connecting to a SQL Server 2005 db.

The code works fine and connects to the database no problem. The problem arises when the network connection is lost for more than a few minutes (which is common as the application is based on remote locations with highly mobile equipment). The code to open the connection immediately throws a error number 17 (SQL Server does not exist or access denied).DBConnection.Open()
The connection object will connect after a few minutes and the application will resume. But the delay is not acceptable and should be quick to recover once the network connection is available. I have checked and I can do all other network functions from the PC once the network is available. (Ping, web browse, DNS etc)

The Code is written in VB.net using framework 1.1.

The db is SQL Server 2005 with SP3.

The code utilizes a dataadapter with associated connection object.

Connection string is as follows;

"SqlConn.ConnectionString" value="initial catalog=TheDB;packet size=4096;integrated security=SSPI;data source=Server05;persist security info=False;connect timeout=2;workstation id=MyWORKSTATION"/>

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

This never happens on dev machine, just on production server. Query giving error normally runs 1300 -1500 mms with Analyzer

A Connection Cannot Be Made To The Database. Timeout Expired.

Looks like I'm up to no good as usual.

Basically due to a client spec, I had to create 115 datasets (one for each of my 115 tables).

After I created the 111th, I am getting the following error:

A connection cannot be made to the database. Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached.


How do I clear the pooled connections or increase the max pool size?

I suppose what happened is each time I create a dataset it opens a connection to the database and these connections aren't being terminated...

First Connection Timeout When Using Full Text Indexing

After rebooting the computer (anytime), the first call to the database will almost always time out.  This did not happen prior to adding the full text index to the database.  It will time out even in the SQL Express Management Suite.

After that first time out, it works fine.

We tried a workaround by making our first call to the database a "dummy" call and wrapping it in a try/catch.

That didn't work either.  Any suggestions?

Can't Connect Sql Server With Default Connection Timeout , Why?

There are two machines(A and B) in intranet . The network between the machines is well.
I can't use client in machine A to connect the sql server in Machine B until i set the "connection timeout" a bigger number such as 30 seconds. If i use the default "connection timeout" to connect , it will return a error message "
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding"
But The correspondence of executing sql command is very quick after the connection is established.

Why need i bigger "connection timeout"? Is that a configuration problem?

Access Project / SQL Server Connection Timeout Problem

Hello,

I have an Access .adp file that's connected to a SQL Server. I can run small queries just fine, but some of my queries take several minutes to run. When I try to run a lengthy query I get an error message that says "Timeout Expired".

I believe that this error is the one that is described here on MSDN online:

I tried to implement a solution similar to this in .adp file by creating this subroutine:

I know that the subroutine is running because I'm seeing the message in the MsgBox statement. (This sub runs everytime the .adp file is opened).

However, doing this still doesn't seem to prevent me from getting the "Timeout Expired" error message when I try to run a lengthy query.

Does anyone know a way around this? I believe the default timeout is 30 seconds ... but SURELY microsoft did not intend for .adp files to not be able to run queries that are longer than 30 seconds.

SQL 2012 :: Connection Hang Or Timeout With JTDS Driver

When SSL is enable on SQL Server (Force Encryption = Yes). Connecting to SQL Server via JDBC using the open source driver jTDS driver take a while and eventually hang or timeout. I tried using jtds-1.2.8-dist and jtds-1.3.1-dist. In the connection property, I added "ss=request". I also tried with "ssl=require".

I am using SQL Server 2012 SP2 and SQL Server 2014 SP1. Samething happen in SQL Server 2005 as well.

I am using this JAVA version "ibm-java-x86_64-sdk-7.0-9.10"

I know this used to work for me when we where using "ibm-java-x86_64-sdk-7.0-8.0"

I am having problems with long timeouts when connecting toor executing commands in SQL Server 2000 SP3. I amwriting an application that will be used on laptops withinan environment that is wireless. The application iswritten in VB.NET using the SQL Server managed provider.I have set the "Connect Timeout" parameter on theconnection string to 15 seconds and whenever I execute acommand, I set the CommandTimeout property to 15 secondson the command object.When I open a connection where there is poor signalstrength or I am in a dead spot, I have timed the varioustimeouts the Open method gives me on the connection to beanywhere between 25 seconds to 70 seconds. Similiarresults with sending commands.When I cannot open the connection I give the user theability to retry the operation that opens the databaseconnection after they have moved back into range. Iimplemented this with a looping construct and messageboxallowing the user to hit Retry or Cancel up to 5 triesbefore it automatically cancels.Sometime on the retry it will work, but sometimes thesecond time through the loop to open the connection willnot work even if the laptop was moved back into range.I am guessing that this behavior has to do with theconnection pooling combined with the fluctuating signalstrength and timing on the WiFi network.
