Connection To Oracle Sometimes Hangs
Jan 3, 2006
Hi,
For a customer we have implemented a datawarehouse with a connection to
Oracle. From the beginning of the project the connection to Oracle
gives troubles. The next morning is the connection still active and
when the customer looks in the processes of SQL Server a " Wait type,
RESOURCE_SEMAPHORE." is shown. For what i know. SQL Server is waiting
for a resource, in this case Oracle but doesn't tell me anything about
what could be the problem.
The customer uses the Oracle driver instead of a microsft oracle
driver.
What could it be? and how can we tackle this problem? Are there ways to
look from Oracle point of view? Can we monitor something?

Hennie

Basic description:
We have developed a solution that sends data from SQL Server to an Oracle server as the result of a stored procedure called by a job that runs every minute. While this development worked fine in our test environment, after moving it to production it ran successfully the first minute, but the second minute the stored procedure hung, and the process could not be killed. In order to stop the process I had to stop both the SQL Agent and the MSDTC services.
Our SQL Server box:
SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition SP4
Windows 2003 Server R2 SP1
Our Oracle box:
Test: Oracle 9.2.0.6
Production: Oracle 9.2.0.4
To setup the SQL box, I did the following:
1) Install Oracle Client Tools version 10.2.0.1
2) Restart Server
3) Modify the registry as follows:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSDTCMTxOCI] "OracleXaLib"="oraclient10.dll" "OracleSqlLib"="orasql10.dll" "OracleOciLib"="oci.dll"
4) Modified the PATH variable so that all references to SQL Server appear in front of Oracle path references
5) Added the linked server via sp_addlinkedserver '<tns name>','Oracle','MSDAORA','<tns name>'
6) Added linked server logins via sp_addlinkedsrvlogin '<tns name>','False','<SQL user>','<Oracle User name>','<password on oracle>'
7) Changed the registry for MSDTC to match this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSDTC]
"AllowOnlySecureRpcCalls"=dword:00000000
"FallbackToUnsecureRPCIfNecessary"=dword:00000001
"TurnOffRpcSecurity"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSDTCSecurity]
"NetworkDtcAccess"=dword:00000001
"NetworkDtcAccessAdmin"=dword:00000001
"NetworkDtcAccessClients"=dword:00000001
"NetworkDtcAccessTransactions"=dword:00000001
"NetworkDtcAccessTip"=dword:00000001
"XaTransactions"=dword:00000001
"DomainControllerState"=dword:00000000
"AccountName"="NT Authority\NetworkService"
"NetworkDtcAccessOutbound"=dword:00000001
"NetworkDtcAccessInbound"=dword:00000001
8) Stopped and restarted services in the following order:
1) MSDTC Stop
2) SQL Server Stop
3) MSDTC Start
4) SQL Server Start
The stored procedure:
In a single transaction, the stored procedure compares a production table against a logging table. If a record exists in the production table that is not in the logging table, a record is inserted into logging table, and a record sent to Oracle via an INSERT INTO OPENQUERY('INSTANCE','SELECT Column1, column2, column3,... FROM SCHEMA.TABLE')
SELECT column1,column2,column FROM SQLTable
This stored procedure has worked just fine for us in test, to either the test or production Oracle boxes, but it now fails, and hangs, in production to either the test or production Oracle boxes.
Additionally, I can run the following query via Query Analyzer from our test box to both the test Oracle and production Oracle and it runs successfully (this is NOT used in our stored procedure code, but is presented here as an indication that I think there is something wrong with the settings on our production SQL box):
SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY('INSTANCE','SELECT * FROM SCHEMA.TABLE')
When I run this same query via Query Analyzer on our Production SQL box, to either the test Oracle or production Oracle, it hangs, and I have to kill the process, and restart the MSDTC service.
Other queries that hang are:
SELECT * FROM SERVER..SCHEMA.TABLE
Additionally, I noticed that when I used this method to kill the process I would see errors like the following in the Application Event Log on the SQL box:
The XA Transaction Manager attempted to perform recovery with the XA resource manager. The XA resource manager reported that recovery was unsuccessful. DSN = MTxOCI.Dll.
Since I figured this was an aborted transaction still residing in the MSDTC log file, I would stop the MSDTC service, delete the MSDTC log file, reset the MSDTC log, and then restart the MSDTC service in order to prevent this error from occurring.
Not ALL queries from the production SQL box to production and test Oracle boxes fail. I can get results returned for this query:
SELECT COLUMN1, COLUMN2 FROM SERVER..SCHEMA.TABLE
I've been scouring the internet for about a week now, and I've run out of ideas on what to check on the production SQL box. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have several DTS packages that connect to various Oracle databases. An upgrade has recently been done to one of the databases from 7.3 to 8i. The other databases were always 8i. Last week, I could edit data transer tasks normally, this week, DTS hangs and I have to use task manager to kill the process. It worked fine last week. I can successfully run the packages, I just can't edit them. I have no trouble editing or running packages that connect to databases other than the one recently upgraded. I have tried both OLE DB and ODBC connections with the same results. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Hello,
On my dev server I have working ssis packages that use connections Microsoft OLEDB provider for Oracle MSDAORA.1 and Oracle provider for oledb and OracleClient data provider.
I use one or the other according to my needs.
In anticipation and to prepare for the build of a new production server, I have build a test server from scratch and deployed to it the entire dev.
Almost everything works except Microsoft OLEDB provider for Oracle.
ssis packages on the test machine will return an error
Error at Pull Calendar from One [OLE DB Source [1]]: The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "one.oledb" failed with error code 0xC0202009.
Error at Pull Calendar from One [DTS.Pipeline]: component "OLE DB Source" (1) failed validation and returned error code 0xC020801C.
[Connection manager "one.oledb"]: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Oracle error occurred, but error message could not be retrieved from Oracle.".
I have used the same installers for OS, SQL and Oracle SQL*Net on both dev and test machines. The install and then the restore/deployment on Test went fine.
Does anyone could point me to the right direction to solve this issue?
Thanks,
Philippe

Hi
I got an access 2002 application front end with a sql server 2005 express back end. Some of my clients are having some difficulties. After using the application for a while, some of the users are finding that the system just hangs up. It usually happens after the front end application has been running for about an hour (sometimes sooner and sometimes later). There are perhaps 1 to 5 concurrent users and I have checked to see if there are any firewalls stalling it (I think I check all of them)- Is there any way that SQL Server 2005 express could be caused to just stall- This even occurs with the odd laptop. All the appropriate protocols are enabled as well. These databses are not very large.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRETIATED!!!
Thanks

Hi
Im writing a program that stores data to SQL server 2005.
Program writen on VC++ 2003.
Code is very simple and it works ok if server runs and parameters are ok.
try
{
HRESULT hr = m_Connection.CreateInstance(__uuidof(ADODB::Connection));
String ConnectionStr;
ConnectionStr.Format(_T("Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=%s;Initial Catalog=MyDB;User Id=%s;Password=%s;"),m_Server.c_str(),m_Username.c_str(),m_Password.c_str());
_bstr_t bstrConnection(ConnectionStr.c_str());
m_Connection->CursorLocation = ADODB::adUseClient;
hr = m_Connection->Open(bstrConnection, L"", L"", ADODB::adConnectUnspecified);
}
catch(_com_error &e)
{
_bstr_t Description = e.Description();
}
But!
if i give wrong paramterer for Data Source , it may happen if user configures it and misprints it, or if server goes offline for some reason, program just hangs on m_Connection->Open and never gives exception as it should.
Any ideas what wrong?
Thanks.

I have several users with an unusual problem with SSMS 2012. When they attempt to connect to a database using the "Connect to Server" dialog box, the connection just hangs. Sometimes after about 15 minutes the connection will be successful. Other attempts simply spin seemingly endlessly. Users experiencing this issue are both running SSMS 2012 on Win 7 Pro (64 bit). The following troubleshooting steps have been tried:
1. When the user runs SSMS "As Administrator" the connections work almost instantly. (Elevating privileges is not a solution in our environment)
2. Wireshark shows that SSMS does not try to hit the SQL server when the user experiencing this issue clicks connect.
3. I can create a new virgin user on the PC and that login experiences the same problem.
4. A complete rip and re-install of SSMS 2012 does not resolve the issue.

I need a way to connect to an Oracle database and pull the information from that database into a Sql Server Database. An Oracle gateway is not an option.
Is there a way to set up an odbc connection to connect to the database or is there another way to connect?
Thank you,

I've installed 32 and 64 bit oracle drivers. I was testing running the two different dtexec.exe programs the other day, logged in as the sql agent and they both worked. Running the 64 bit as a job did not work. 32 bit does not work, since the agent process is 64 bit, from what I understand.
Today I'm working on it again and trying the same steps. Running the 32 bit executable dtexec is now returning "not a valid win32 executable". I swear this worked the other day, and works on our other server.
Running the 64bit executable from the agent just hangs up on this log entry:
HRD1.Cardiff (my oracle connection)
ExternalRequest_pre: The object is ready to make the following external request: 'IDataInitialize::GetDataSource'.
Anyone know what is going on?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918760/
I read this article, but didn't think it applied,since I chose for protectionLevel = sql to handle permission (I think they ) -
So I created a proxy using my credentials and gave it access to cmdexec and ssis and it worked. Can anyone explain this to me??

Hi,
I have created a simple report that reads data from Oracle within Visual Studio. I have no problem with previewing the report within Visual Studio. When I deploy the report to the Report Server (same machine) and try to open the report through Report Manager, I get the following error message:
An error has occurred during report processing.
Cannot create a connection to data source 'xxxx'.
System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater.
I am aware of the following issue that requires extra security to be assigned to the Oracle directories: http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=870668
Even after applying the Read/Execute access to the Network Service account that is running the Reporting Service, I still get the error message.
Can anyone help me with the debugging of this issue?
Thanks,
Ben

I am having some difficulty to update a record in a table from SQL Server 6.5 to Oracle 7.3 DB.
Basically I want to write a insert trigger in Sql Server 6.5 table and I want to update the same inserting record to Unix Oracle table. I tried by writing a DLL and use that in SQL Server External Stored Procedure, but I dont know how to pass the parameter for that. Parameter here is record which I want to insert in to Oracle Table.
Is there any easy way to do that? Did any body did that before? Please help me out.
Thanks a lot

We are in the process of setting up some type of interface between 2 applications that utilize SQL Server(ours) and theirs which utilizes Oracle. These servers will actually sit in the same server room. My thought was to take the simple approach of each DB setting up views needed by the other and assigning a user and security so the other DB can look at the data. We currently do this in house. THeir solution is to use a somewhat sophisticated mesaging system which will pass XML information back and forth between the systems. I hate to take the simpleton approach but why go through all that trouble where a simple view not only provides the same functionality, but is a dynamic as it gets. If anything goes wrong with the messaging system itself or problems with a specific message this needs to be resolved before the data is available. Non of this is a problm with the view. Any input from anyone who has this in place(either solution) appreciated. Or any arguments against my point of view

Hi,
We are trying to change our current SSRS reports to point to an Oracle 10g database. I can connect to the Oracle db from the report server via the ODBC Administrator and also through the BI 2005 studio. The connections work fine. However, when I publish the reports and try to run them from the web I always get a connection error. When I use the oracle connection it acts as if it doesn't see the oracle client and when I use ODBC it throws a werid 114 error.
Is there anything I am missing? I just don't understand why the report will work in BI Studio, but not when it is published (on the same machine)?
Any thoughts?

I have SQL Server 2000 and am using DTS to simply import some data located on a remote Oracle DB.
If I have the following information:
TNS Name:
ThisApp.world
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS =
(COMMUNITY = tcpxxx.world)
(PROTOCOL = TCP)
(Host = SomeHost)
(Port = 1234)
)
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = App)
(GLOBAL_NAME = ThisApp.world)
)
)
And I also have the name of the Table.
Using the DTS Wizard, on the Choose a Data Source screen, I pick the following:
Data Source: Microsoft ODBC Drive for Oracle
Server:
Username:
Password:
I don't know what I should put into the other fields, given what I have above, i.e. what to put in for Server, Username, and Password! Or should I use a different procedure to import this Oracle data? I am almost positive I was not supplied the username/password. I was told I could connect given the above TNS information. What do you all recommned?
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I dont know if I should post this question here, or on oracle forums, but here goes ...
I made a simple package that performs 2 Excecute SQL Tasks, one task does a select query on a SQL Server DB Table, the other task does a select query on an Oracle DB Table.
The package runs fine in BIDS when debugging, but when I deployed the package to a file system and added it to an sql server agent Job, it all went wrong ...
I tried the ms oledb dataprovider (ole db) for oracle but also the oracleclient data provider (ado.net) but the package always fails.
The error messages in the logfile are these:

Failed to acquire connection "aaa.bbb.oracleClient". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection.
the OnError logrow for the package itself says almost the same.
Now my question is: What do I need to configure to get it all working? I think I need to configure the oracle db no? What should I configure? ...

Hi,
I was trying to connect to Oracle Source in SSIS
1. Err: Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. Oracle Client and networking components were not found
Sol: I installeed the Oracle Client tools
2. Err: ORA -12154: TNS: Could not resolve teh connect identifier specified
Sol: Then I point out the TNS file
3. Now I coonect the Oracle db . I go to Connection Manager . Specifies the provide as: Native OLE DB Oracle Provide for OLE DB, Select my DB, provide teh user name and password. and check if the connection passed.
Then in my data Flow Task when I add this source and check the Colmns its gives me an error./ sort of warning
The component reported the following warnings:
Warning at {C947B.......} [Ole DB Source[1]]: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. if the components supports teh "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used.....
Will this warning has an significance. i dont see any error in my output data. but is there something I m doing wrong.

i have successfully implemented a dynamic connection string based on a dropdown list of environments (dev, test, prod). it works well during testing in the vs2005 ide; but once i deploy it to the rs server, it complains that the credentials are not stored in the rs server database and won't run the report.
as in most large organizations, the developers do not have control over the rs server, so i cannot manipulate rs config or web config files on the server side; so, how do i get past this obstacle?
thanks in advance

Hi All,
Is there a way in SSIS to change the database connection to sqlserver or oracle or db2 without choosing the connection manager in the source.
For e.g. I ran a package which is reading data from sqlserver and later i want to connect to oracle to read the data but without changing the connection manager in the source.
Basically, i want to find out from you gurus is about a way to switch between databases without changing the connection managers. OR the only way is to make different sets of packages for oracle / db2 and sqlserver sources ?
Thanks,
Vipul

help - I€™ve been stuck on this for days.
My software vendor limits the sessions to one (1) per log-in to Oracle 9i and I€™m having tons of problems trying to extract data through an SSIS package. Everytime I run the package SSIS already logged in and the OLE DB source fails because of the sessions exceeded error.
Is there any way to limit the connection to just when I need the data to pump across on the OLE DB source?
Thank you very much for any help.
Regads,
Nestor

Hi
I have a number of scripts that run against an oracle server to retreive data to manipulate before populating a sqlserver database. I am connecting using an Odbc connection and using the DataReader Source to read from the Oracle table. It all seems to work ok.
When I have tried to extract data from an Oracle view in the same way it doesn't seem to work. The error message mentioned the PrimeOutput() method and error code 0xC02090F5. The view is very big so is it possible that the connection simply timed out?
Any ideas?
Thanks
B

While upgrading several packages from DTS 2000 to SSIS I came across a couple of packages where the source data comes from an Oracle DB. Until now I have not migrated data from an Oracle source.
When I tried to create a new connection I got the error:
"System.Data.Oracle client requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater."
This is being developed on a machine that would not have any oracle drivers before now, so I THOUGHT it would be as simple as downloading the drivers, but the resolution seems to be much more complex than that. When I researched it, it appeared that I needed to download the Oracle 9i software. The installation is about 10 GB and this seemed like overkill to just be able to connect to a database.
Is this in fact the correct solution? If so, or even if not, can I get a quick run down of the steps involved, and anyone's experience (problems, etc..) on the topic?

Hi,
I used OLE DB for oracle connection provider, it takes only Server name, User id, Password but along with it,
I want to give it Database name like in OLE DB for Sql Server.
Is it possible to provide it in some other way, so that i can put DataBase name directly also.
Thanks

I am not seeing an option to use the OraOLEDB.Oracle driver when defining connections in ssis. This driver shows up in management studio when trying to create linked servers so I don't know why it wouldn't show up here. All the client tools are installed fine and the linked server works. Any ideas?

Hi,
I have a package connecting to oracle database ,this was developed on 32 bit Windows OS now i moved the same to 64 bit OS and it fails to connect to oracle database.
I have created system DSN and tested it was successfull.
In my package i am using ado.net connection object ,I am using ODBC data provider.I select the Data source in the drop down .provide user name and password and when i hit on test connection it fails with the following message
Test connection failed because of error in initilizing the provider error[08004]
[oracle][odbc][ora]ORA 12154 : TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified
[Error]IM006[Microsoft][ODBC driver manager] drivers SQL setconnectattr failed
Any help on this will be appreciated
Note:- even though the OS is 64 bit i am using 32 bit ODBC as BI studio can only access 32 bit odbc

I'm trying to implement a configurable way of executing a group of SQL statements using either an Oracle or SQL database as the source for the data.
I'm currently building a connection string with a Script Task and then assigning it to a package variable so that it can be used by a connection manager but this only works with a SQL OLEDB connection.
I'm holding all the connection details in a database table, hence the need for the scripting but would it be possible to extend the task to reuse a single connection manager by changing it's properties?
