Connection To Database Takes Up Alot Of Memory In Application

Jun 29, 2006

Hi all, I was just wonder what the normal memory consumption is when just simply making a connection to a database. I have an application that starts, and when it connects the to a database, it eats up around a 1.5 MB, yes I keep the connection open for the life of the application (as its in a kinda global class, and when database reads/writes are performed I just get the open connection object) - I don't run any queries against the database here, just connect.

Is this a normal amount of memory to consume on a simple connection to a database?

Creating Instance Of SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Application Takes 30 Seconds

Jan 9, 2008

Hi guys, need help again.

I'm running packages from C# code and thus I need to create an instance of SqlServer.DTS.Runtime.Application.
In my maching, creating the application instance doesn't even take 1 sec but when the application was deployed to our QA server creating the instance took 30 secs (always ... every single time with no exception).

this single code is taking the 30 secs:

Application integrationService = New Application();

Does anyone have any idea what I need to check or configure to make this faster?

Connection To SQL 2000 Database With .Net 1 Application

Nov 12, 2007

Hi there,

Has anyone ever encountered problems making .Net applications connect to a SQL database on SQL 2000 with SP3a?

It's running on a virtual machine with a Windows Server 2000 Std with SP4, the .Net application is working with .Net Framework 1.1.4322.573. For some reason it can't connect to the SQL database using the specified username and password in the web.config file even though the user exists in the SQL database. I've tried using the SA password but this still doesn't work. I can logon to SQL Query Analyzer using the SA password but not using the other username.

The .Net application does work on other systems of mine all of which can run on Windows Server 2000 and 2003, I have compared them but can't find any differences.

Any ideas anybody?

Thanks,

Chris

Application On Start And Database Connection

Nov 24, 2003

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me answer this question.

If I had a site like Yahoo, that constantly had users accessing it. Would it be a good or bad idea to automatically open a database connection to SQL Server on Application Start? What would you recommend? Would opening and closing the DB connection on every page save alot of overhead and bottleneck? Thank You.

Windows Application With Connection To Database On A Server

Apr 21, 2008

Hi all,

I think I can do this, just want to check

Can I have an sql server database (mdf file) on a server and allow windows applications at different site manipulate the database.

As far as I am concerned the only thing that needs to be configued is the connection string..is this correct.

[i would rather use windows applications rather than asp pages]

If I can, the best way to manipulate the database is to use stored procedures. How would I do the following to create and execute the following proposed procedure:

Insert data into a table
Update another table as a result

Execute the store procedure on a form to execute these two statements

Thanks in advance

Peter

Failover Takes Long Due To Connection Blocking

Mar 27, 2007

We are using SQL Server 2005 mirroring with the witness server.

In most cases whenever a failover was triggered we saw it happen in a matter

of a few seconds. However, the last time it took about 15 minutes - we suspect

due to Connection being blocked.

Would appreciate any information on what could cause this?

We have 2 databases that run on the server.

Using One Single-application Connection Vs. One Connection For Every Operation To SQL-Server Via ADO.NET

Aug 11, 2005

Dear members,I'am thinking about the "best" way to connect to my sql-server viaADO.Net (if there is a best way).My application uses the sql-server very intensively. At the momentevery database-operation opens a connection, executes and then closesthe connection.Another way would be to use only a single connection to the database,which is opened when the application starts.What do you think is the better way to get a high performing sqlserver: using one single application connection vs. using oneconnection for every operation?Cheers, Sebastian

Got doubtful and started the same on another test system. Issue is same and it is almost 2 hours. The Db size is less than 100 MB in both cases. IS IT NORMAL? Client Failover Takes 1 To 3 Minutes After Database Has Failed Over

May 12, 2008

We are having problems getting the ADO.NET client to failover in a timely manner in a web application. Here's what happens:

1) Database fails over in 3 to 5 seconds
2) Clients attempt to login to primary and receive SQL server not available errors
3) The clients slowly start to connect and succeed without errorson the secondary.
4) We are still see SQL Server login errors on the primary, even after the failover
5) When we failback to the primary, it all happens within a few seconds (no problems)

If we recycle IIS, this problem goes away

Here's what we have tried
1) Turning off connection pooling (has no effect). We also can see the connections get killed on the primary server
2) Applying this hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944099)

And yes, we are running a script to sync up the SIDS so that doesn't appear to be a problem. What seems to be happening is the primary server is getting stuck in the ADO.NET application memory. The problem is we don't know how to fix it.

BTW, our hardware is SQL Server 2005, Windows Server 2003, .NET 2.0 (and .NET 3.5)

Let me know if you need additional information. Thanks in advance

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Restore Database From GUI Takes Long Or Never Pop Up

Mar 24, 2015

I have SQL 2014. When I try to restore a user database using SSMS GUI, the Restore Database Pop up box never pops up. This happens for any database on this server at any time. Sometimes I get the pop up, some times I dont get.

So I tried to click on Databases on Top and Restore Database, and then select the db that I need to restore from Drop down, then it shows "creating restore plan selecting backups" but it takes forever.

We have full backup and trn log backups every 30 mins. So is it trying to get all these backup files in the background causing this issue? If yes then how to overcome this?

Cannot Set Connection Property Of Backup Database Task If Connection String Is Customized In Connection Object

Aug 23, 2006

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.

Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.

Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.

Is this an intrinsic issue?

SqlWb.exe : Application Error- Memory Could Not Be Read Error

Sep 14, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to execute a SSIS package from a client through BIDS, but when I start BIDS, I am getting the error -

SqlWb.exe : Application error - The instruction at "0X77D...." referenced memory at "0X00000002". The memory could bot be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to terminate the program.

Please help.

Other information:

I have tried running the package on the server and it executes properly. I really dont know why this is a problem with the SQL Server clients alone. I have also tried googling around and could not find any resolution. Can anyone point me to the right direction please!!!

Thanks in advance!!!

32-bit Client Connection Via Shared Memory To 64-bit SQL Server

Mar 18, 2008

Hi,

Our 32-bit applications connect to SQL Server 32-bit through OLEDB with Shared memory as preferred protocol. Our client applications and SQL Server generally reside on same machine.
We are evaluating possible impact when SQL Server 2008 64-bit is accessed with our 32-bit client applications running on 64bit WindowsServer 2008. Can shared memory protocol will be still used by underlying SQL server OLEDB dll considering the client application is 32-bit where as SQL Server is 64-bit ? Or it will switch to Named pipes or TCP/IP automatically ?

Thanks

Check Connection From C# Application To SQL Server.

Jun 28, 2007

Hey anyone,
I got a problem to check a connection whether it is established or not from my C# Application to SQL Server.
I am developing my application which can run in 2 modes:
1. Online: There must be a connection to SQL Server to get new data updates.
2. Offline: I dont need a connection to SQL Server. I set a timer to tick every 5 seconds and it will check the connection with SQL Server and my problem here: (this is my code)1 public static bool checkConnection()
2 {
3 SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection("mydatasource");
4 try
5 {
6 conn.Open();
7 return true;
8 }
9 catch (Exception ex) { return false; }
10 }

 Yes, it works but my application seems to wait about >3 seconds to get the return "False"; I tried to add "Connect TimeOut=1" in my Connection String, but the problem is still there.
I dont know whether there is a faster way to check the connection to SQL server which is established or not.
Thank you very much,
Joesy

Application Role Losing Connection?

Sep 6, 2007

Hi,

I'm testing the use of application roles for security. The customer I work for has still a lot of ASP intranet applications running. We're migrating the databases to a SQL Server 2005 server.

I've changed the connection string to a user without any permissions but to log on. After that I use an application role for permission to select different tables and to execute Stored Procedures.

The first queries do execute but after that I get "Permission denied", like I haven't got the application role anymore.

Any ideas?

Adrian

Verifying Connection To 3rd Party Application

Jul 23, 2005

Is there a way that SQL can automatically look at each users'connection and make sure it is still connected through the third partyapplication? The problem is that when a connection to this applicationis not terminated properly, the SQL server is not notified of thedisconnect and the user cannot log back into the application until allthe processes are completed and the original session terminated.Thank you.

SQLExpresss Losing Connection To VB6 Application

Apr 2, 2007

I have a VB6 application that has MSDE as its current backend. In
testing moving to SLSQLExpress I've noticed, since this application is run on laptops, that if I disconnect the network cable while I'm in the VB6 app I lose "connection" to the database. If I end task on the app and restart it it works fine. If I reconnect the network cable while the app is running and then disconnect it the app runs fine. Also this happens when I'm connected to a wireless network and then disconnect and disable that connection.

In my template.ini file I have DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0. Is there a setting I'm missing? I can't seem to find anything else to set in the ini file.
