Convert Access Into SQL Server Express

Dec 7, 2007

Sorry if this has been answered before. Could not find any answers.
OS Vista Business, SQL Server 2005 Express.
I have a CSV file which I imported to Access only 100 records with 8 fields. Then ran Tools >> Database Utilities >> Upsizing Wisard. The result was I exported the table field headers but not the data. Is there any method on how I can get the field headers and data into SQL Server Express?

Help - Convert/import Access Data Into Sql 2005 Express... W/dts Wizard....?

May 11, 2008

i have a website project making an online catalog, maybe 20 categories, a few hundred items.  the small business starter kit looked perfect to jump start this.  the client has provided an access database with the two table for categories and products.  i've got the dts wizard installed and have been trying to import the access data into the sbsk database but i'm stuck.  i'm almost positive that ONE time when i was banging around with the dts wizard, the Edit Mapping screen would let me drop down a list of fields in the destination table so I could actually tell it which field data from the source i wanted to go into which field of the destination.  Of course it didn't succeed that time and now i can't seem to figure a way to get back to having the option to choose the destination fields, all it gives me in the drop down is "<ignore>" or the field name of the source table, which of course doesn't match any of the ones that are in the sbsk.
i've been back through it for a couple days, trying different ways, migrating the data first to sql, letting it try a transfer to a new table then trying to import that, moving both out to excel, aligning the data manually and trying to import that, etc.  i'm bout out of ideas and would sure like to get back to just trying to work out the data type alignment issues with whatever it was i did when i could choose the destination table's fields.
i'd be most appreciative if anyone has a clue what i'm talking about and can put me back on track.

Mar 27, 2000

Hi,
on a migration from access 97 to SQL Server 7.0 columns in access like 'hyperlink' are converted to datatype 'text' on the SQL Server 7.0. Now I miss the function in the access application I had before with fields like 'hyperlink'. Now I can't start e.g. a word document with a click and I have to type in the hyperlink manualy.
Does anyone had the same problem an possibly have a resolve?
Thanks.

SQL Server 2005 Express:Is It Possible To Convert Existing Data From .mdb To .mdf?

Sep 21, 2006

Hi all,

I need to use the SQLDataSource in Visual Web Developer (VWD) 2005 Express websites. The SQLDataSource must have the .mdf data in the project application. But I have a volume of the .mdb data for evaluation by using T-SQL of the SQL Server 2005 Express and VWD 2005 Express program. Is it possible to convert existing data from .mdb to .mdf? If it is possible, please tell me what software program to use and how to do it.

Thanks,

How To Convert A SQL Server 2005 Database To SQL Server Express

Jun 29, 2006

Hi,
I have a SQL Server 2005 Database that I would like to export to SQL Server Express.
How do I go about this?
I've tried backing it up, creating a new (blank) SQL Server Express Database and trying to restore it, but get the following message:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio------------------------------
Restore failed for Server 'PRODSOL-LAPTOP1SQLEXPRESS'.  (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Restore+Server&LinkId=20476
------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'ProdsolPGC' database. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&LinkId=20476
Neither of the links provide any more information and I'm sure that I'm missing a step out.  I've tried scripting the existing database and then running the script against the new database, but I can't get that to work either - these blooming newbies!
Please help!
Thanks very much.

Sql Server Express And Access

Jul 23, 2007

Hi,
i am very new to databases. I use VWD 2005, Sql Server Express 2005 and have a remote database through a host rather than my own server. i have managed to create sql databases fine. Its with Access Databases Im really geting confused:
Can i use an access database I have created using VWD and sql server Express 2005? Or would it run just through VWD and the remote ?
If i use VWD I dont usually need to use IIS but if the latter of the two options is what I must do then i would manually need to create a virtual folder?

Can't Access SQL Server DBs From VS Express

Sep 14, 2007

Hi,

I've installed Visual Studio Express C# and Visual Studio Express Web Designer along with SQL Server. I've downloaded the example databases and have installed them - I can access the databases using the SQL Server tools.

When I try to access any SQL Server databases (specifically the Northwind example DB) via the Add Database Connection dialog in either C# or Web Designer, I get an error box with message "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation".

I get this when I manually enter Northwind in the Database Name field; if I try to browse, the whole dialog exits, or, sometimes Visual C# Express crashes. Since the same problem occurs both within C# and Web Designer, I'm assuming the problem is in SQL Server, which is why I'm posting in this forum.

I'm sure I have some configuration problem, and a complete uninstall/reinstall is certainly a possibility, but I'm hoping someone has an idea about how I can around this problem without having to reinstall.

Thanks for your time,
Larry

Unable To Access SQL Server Express

Jun 14, 2007

I logged on to my SQL Server Express this morning and received the following error:
 Cannot connect to MICHELLEWSQLEXPRESS.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

What is interesting is that its on a local computer.  I followed one recommendation to enable the pipes and tcp but that didn't work either.  How do I change the default settings to allow remote connections (on a local computer) when I can't log into the server?

Need Access-like Security Of SQL Server Express

Jun 8, 2007

Is there a way to implement Access-like password protection on a SQL Server Express dataset?

The database will be deployed on individual's PCs with no centralization of control. I want to restrict users from being able to see table definitions, stored procedures, etc. Access-like password protection is what I want, but I don't see any similar feature within SQL Server Express. Am I missing something?

SQL Server Express And Access 2003

Apr 7, 2006

I recently started developing a new Access project for a client, and decided to try out Access 2003 with SQL Express 2005. Everything was going fine until I tried to modify a table from within Access. I got an error message that SQL Express is incompatible with Access 2003, and it suggested I go to the Microsoft website and search for a patch/upgrade to solve this.

I tried to ignore it, and it started warning me that none of my table edits would be saved.

I looked around, but I can't find anything about this.

Is this true? Is there a patch to fix this?

I WAS TOLD THAT WE COULD USE SQL SERVER TO MAKE AN ACCESS DATABASE A MULTI-USER PRODUCT. IS THAT TRUE AND HOW IS THAT DONE?

Also I want to work with SQL Express from another workstation instead of directly with the server, which tool do I use to build with it?

Probably very obvious answers but since it is critical to do it right, I wanted to check.

What is the best tutorial in regard to these kinds of functions?

MS Access To SQL With SQL Server 2005 Express

Nov 2, 2007

Trying to convert my access DB to SQL using 05 express using the upsizing wizard but receiving "SQL Server does not exist or access is denied"
[microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory] ConnectionOpen(connect())

I'm brand new to this. My site is currenty running cold fusion with MS Access on a remote hosting server that doesn't allow me to update the DB. They suggested migrating to SQL with CF so I can make changes without bring down the entire server.

I'm trying to make the conversion on my local machine running XP pro. I have just installed the .net framework and SQL server 2005 express. Do I need a different version?

Suggestions?

How Can I Access SQL Server Compact Edition With SQL Server Management Studio Express?

Jul 26, 2007

Hello,

I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases.

To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect.

To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1".

Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation?

Might I need an upgrade to some other components? My Management Studio Version is:

- Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thank you,

WTW
