Convert Negative Number Stored As Nvarchar
Feb 4, 2008
I'm working with a horrible database! The field I'm having issues with is a negative number stored as a nvarchar, but it's not stored in a consistent format. I need to convert the field to a decimal (9,2) but I can't because of the negative sign.
Example:
Balance
00000000
0000-413
0000-913
00-10913
00009526
I don't even know where to start to convert this. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

I was just wondering if there is a way of converting a number from negative to positive within Reporting Services, ie remove the "-" sign from the front of the number? One of the columns within my report contains a calculation which results in an integer, but it is always a negative number, even though it should really be positive (it would take too long to describe the exact reason for this, but it's to do with the underlying database, which I don't have access to anyway). When I right-click on the relevant cell within the table in Layout view in the Report Designer and go to Expression, there is a list of Conversion functions under the "Common Functions" heading but I can't find anything there which would convert a number from negative to positive. Does anyone know how this can be achieved?

Hello,
I'm having problems with a column of numeric string data coming from a tab delimited CSV file. When a number in the column is negative, it is expressed this way; 1,240.52-
The negative symbol occurs at the end of the numeric string. The destination column is in a SQL Server 2005 table. I've tried to change the data type of the table column, and three or four different data types in a data conversion task, but nothing has worked so far to bring the data over.
Any ideas?
Thank you for your help!

I am trying to output the difference in minutes between 2 times. The sql statement works for the most part but if I compare a time before midnight and a time after midnight, the query returns a negative number.
Here is my SQL statement:
SELECT
dbo.fdc_trips.enrdate,dbo.FDC_Trips.enrtime, dbo.fdc_trips.atsdate,dbo.FDC_Trips.atstime, DATEDIFF(n, dbo.FDC_Trips.enrtime, dbo.FDC_Trips.atstime)
AS TimeDiff
FROM dbo.FDC_Trips
For example: if enrtime = 23:57:00 and atstime = 00:04:00, the DATEDIFF formula returns -1433, and really it should be 7.
How can I get this query to work with times before and after midnight?

I am representing negative number within parenthesis , but as I am working on reporting service, it is possible to make the exact alignment of the number and parenthesis.
here is one example ....
when i format number with #,##,0;(#,##,0) i am getting output in a format in subsequent rows like
123,345
(145,567)
How can I make this alignment like
123,345
(145,567)
where the parenthesis will be outside the number space keeping in mind the alignment is in right .
any help will be apriciated.
thanks

Could some one help me to explain what does it means when I ran sp_spaceused on the database it reported ex. -15430kb for unused. Does this mean that the index ran out off space. Do I need to increase space for the database. I will try to run the dbcc check hope it will fix the problem.
Thanks.

Sorry if this question has been answered before--i tried a search but nothing came close to what i needed.
I have a report I am creating where I need to group on whether a number is positive or negative. The number will never be zero. This number is a decimal (currency), if that makes a difference.
I have tried creating a formula field with the following expression:
Code Snippet
IIf(Fields!Num.Value > 0, 1, 0)
I tried creating a group using this field (essentially, positive = 1 and negative = 0), but it gave me no results at all.
If you need any more information, please let me know and I will provide what I can. Thanks for your answers!

I have a 2012 report builder chart that has two series (one area chart and one bar chart) combined into one chart. The problem I'm having is the bar chart has much smaller numbers than the area chart and the scaling is messed up.
Is there any way to put the bar chart on the right axis and keep the area chart on the left axis? My goal is to increase the size of the bar chart in relation to the area chart.
Also, is there any way to make the bar chart color red if the number is negative and green if it is positive?

Dear Experts,Ok, I hate to ask such a seemingly dumb question, but I'vealready spent far too much time on this. More that Iwould care to admit. In Sql server, how do I simply change a character into a number??????In Oracle, it is:select to_number(20.55)from dualTO_NUMBER(20.55)----------------20.55And we are on with our lives. In sql server, using the Northwinds database:SELECTr.regionid,STR(r.regionid,7,2) as a_string,CONVERT(numeric, STR(r.regionid,7,2)) as a_number,cast ( STR(r.regionid) as int ) as cast_to_numberFROM REGION R1 1.00112 2.00223 3.00334 4.0044SELECTr.regionid,STR(r.regionid,7,2) as a_string,CONVERT(numeric, STR(r.regionid,7,2) ) as a_number,cast (STR(r.regionid,7,2) as numeric ) as cast_to_numberFROM REGION R1 1.00112 2.00223 3.00334 4.0044Str converts from number to string in one motion.Isn't there a simple function in Sql Server to convertfrom string to number? What is the secret? Thanks

I need to sort by an ntext field, but it won't let me do it.
However, if I cast the field as nvarchar(100), I can use ORDER BY on that.
Is there any reason that this is a bad idea? In my testing, ordering by a converted ntext field was actually *faster* than ordering by an nvarchar (same data in the fields).

Hi everyone.
So as the subject says, I have a few fields that are nvarchar but hold date information. Most of these fields I have been able to move to datetime easiliy enough, simply by going into edit mode for the table and converting the fields to datetime. But 1 field is giving me problems I keep getting this error.
quote:- Unable to modify table.
Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime.
The statement has been terminated.
I really dont know why I'm getting this error, but I"m assuming it may have to be something like one of the records may not be in date format. But I don't know if this is the case and I don't know how to locate where my problem is coming from.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I need it to be converted to type decimal (or float) before it is inserted in the new table.
Is there a way to do this within the SELECT TOP expression?

I'm new to SQL so please walk me through this step by step.
All the columns in my table have a data type of nvarchar, however, some of them need to be changed to decimals.
Here's an example of what my table (cicc.972file) looks like now
Account nvarchar(8) Balance nvarchar(8) Percent nvarchar(5)
45678935 459600 03500
78965215 005643 10000
and here's what I need it to look like
Account Number Balance Percent
45678935 4596.00 0.3500
78965215 56.43 1.0000
This seems like it should be ridiculously easy, but I keep running into road blocks. Like I said, this is just a sample from my table. My real table has 90 columns in it and about half of them need to be changed to either a dollar representation or a percent.
Thanks for you help!

I have imported a text file with various data into sql table. all these values have been imported as nvarchar. I need to convert these into Integer. the format of the values is 10length i.e. 0000000.00.
example of data:
0001028.99 - needs to be shown as 1028.99
222.00 - needs to be shown as 222.00
0000190.89 - needs to be shown as 190.89
2708.99 - needs to be shown as 2708.99
00000-50.99 - needs to be shown as -50.99
-109.79 - needs to be shown as -109.70
as you can see some of the values have leading zeros and some don't.
i have tried converting from nvarchar to int and i get the error cannot convert nvarchar to int, i believe it may be because the data contains negative values as well as positive values.
Is there a split function or position function which i can use to extract the data? or any other methods which i can use would be really helpful.
Thanks

I need to always have a formatting of 999,999,999.00 in a column called PropertyMap9.
PropertyMap9 is always a nvarchar(max)
How do I SET a value using a CONVERT or CAST to accomplish this ?
Why does this give me a syntax error ? The PropertyMap7 set actually works and performs the calculation and sets the new value for that row, however the next line gives an error. I need all 3 columns PropertyMap9, 8, and 7 to always have the above formatting, while still maintaining the nvarchar(max) datatype in the column. HELP!
update PropertyMapValues
set PropertyMap7 = CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),CAST(PropertyMap8 AS money) - (CAST(PropertyMap9 AS money)),1)
set PropertyMap9 = CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),CAST(PropertyMap9 AS money))
END
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure UpdatePropertyMap7, Line 59

Hi all,I need to store data into about 104 columns. This is problematic with MSSQL, since it doesn't support rows over 8kb in total size. Most of the columns are of type NVARCHAR(255), which means we can't havemore than 8092/(255*2) = 15 columns of this type. With a row length of more than 8kb, SQL gives a warning that any rows overthat amount will be truncated. So far I'm seeing two possible solutions to this problem:1. Split data into multiple tables with the same ID column accross alltables, and then join them on SELECT statements.2. Use NTEXT instead of NVARCHAR. NTEXT's length is 16 bytes because itcontains a pointer to the actual value stored somewhere else. However, NTEXTdoesn't support regular indexing, only through a Full-Text Index catalog. Inthis case I'll need to user "WHERE CONTAINS(columnName, 'sometext')" toperform searches, which is bearable.I'm inclined toward #2. However I haven't used Full-Text indices before anddon't know their limitations. Will I run into problems with NTEXT? Is therea better solution?Thanks.-Oleg.

Ok I have upgraded my works database from a poorly designed Access database to a SQL database. The previous system allowed NULL values and duplicates to be inserted into a field that should NOT ALLOW NULL Values or duplicates. Therefore, this issue has now been moved across to my new system as I cannot set these constraints on the field that has multiple NULL values.
My solution would be to use a sequential operator, so whatever = NULL would be changed to a sequential number that us as administrators would know was a bogus number starting at something like = 999999900 counting up from that. There are only 250 records that would require updating.
To make things more interesting this field is not a integer type, its a Nvarchar type as its a Hardware ID. Both numerical and characters are require.

Hi all,
I spent about an hour searching the forums and the web but could not find a solution. Bob Bojanic, if you are around can you answer?
I have a DB that stores WW data for company names in a varchar
I don't have control over this DB, other than to pull data from it
I have an SSIS package that grabs WW data in a single pull using a system account
I have an Execute SQL task that runs a sproc to stage the data
I have a Data Flow Task that then copies the data to another server (where I need it)
The destination columns are nvarchar. The source columns are varchar.
Some countries (such as Korea and China) end up with ASCII gibberish (because of code page issues).
I have a solution that involves pulling the data, BCP the pulled data to a text file, then re-import with the correct code page, and delete the gibberish. BUT, I'd like to do this as part of the pull if possible (without any data duplication).
I've tried modifying the CodePage properties for both the Staging step (Execute SQL task running a sproc) and the Source & Dest columns for the Data Flow Task with no luck. Can anyone assist? Thanks much!
Brian
