Converting Binary Image To Readable Text

Sep 18, 2005

I have a table that contains the following two columns:

BITS (image(16))
BIT_LENGTH (int(4))

When I look at the table, I see "OLE Object" in the BITS column. What
syntax should I use in a SELECT statement to convert the binary image
info contained in "BITS" into simple text that I can read? What role
does the BIT_LENGTH field play?

Converting Binary To Text

Hey,Another 'must be simple' question.. I'm wishing to convert a binaryfield into a textual representation of that binary data. i.e. come outwith what the query analyser would display, and not try to convert thebinary into ascii/whatever encoded text.Cheers for any clues,Chris

Import Human-Readable Text File Into SQL Server 2000

Jul 20, 2005

Hello,I am receiving a text file that is produced from a mainframe that isout of my control. I am attempting to find a (hopefully clean) way toimport it into a SQL Server database in an automated fashion. I amnot really concerned about how many tables it requires or what theschema looks like as long as the data remains related and ends up inits respective fields (I will probably use scratch tables for this).The data is given to me in a format that is meant to be printed outand read by human eyes (in a text file). The format looks somethinglike this:Begin File:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------1234 1234 1234 1234 XYZ Company 01/01/2003.......More stuff related to XYZ company for a couple of lines ..............(this stuff can easily be parsed by position).......MCARD VISA AMEX DISC-------------------------------------------------------------------------------TOTAL 11111.11 4444.44 5555.55 30.01TRANS FEE .20 .20 .15 .15TRANS AMOUNT 2222.22 888.89 833.33 4.50DISC .0165 .0165 .0365 .0355-------------------------------------------------------------------------------ANOTHER HEADER............More stuff related to XYZ Company................End File:Well, this isn't the exact format, but just an example. The point isthat all of the data in each column is related and should end up inthe same record which is related to the parent record of XYZ Company(or all in a single record in a single table if that is the closest Ican get).Also, the rows are not always present. For example, if TRANS FEEdoesn't apply to anything in the row, then the entire row willcollapse and TRANS AMOUNT would be the next line after TOTAL.I was looking at the bcp utility and dts, but dts doesn't seem to havethe performance capabilities (or reliability for that matter) I amlooking for. Bcp seems like it might work if there is some advancedformatting commands that I can't find in the documentation - Anyone?The best I can come up with is to use a high level language such as C#or VB.NET to parse the text file into another text file that is commadelimited, and then use the bcp utility (or bulk insert) to import itinto SQL Server where I can then use TSQL to manipulate it how I want.I am trying to eliminate the high level language parse and just gostraight from file to database. Does anybody know an easier route?TIA

OPENXML And Binary/Image Data

Aug 17, 2005

I seem to be getting very annoying behaviour from SQL Server and was wondering what the correct method should be...I want to store some binary data in the database and I want to use a stored procedure.  I also want to pass some XML to the stored procedure where this XML contains the binary data. I will then use OPENXML to grab the binary data and stick in the table. In order to ensure the safe transmission of the binary through XML I Base64 encode it. Ok so far. The problem is that although OPENXML is supposed to assume that anything marked as Image/Binary will be Base64 encoded it then proceeds to Base64 encode it again and put that result into the database! So what am I missing, am I supposed use a CDATA section or something rather than Base64 encode my XML?

Get Binary Data From Image Column

May 13, 2008

Hi I have an image column (Spectrum) in a Table (ParticleEDS) which is populated with an array of a bunch of INT32's (4 bytes each)

Using TSQL is there any way that I can read each 4 bytes (convert this to an INT) and return this data for a given record (based on ParticleEDSID).

I know that there are 2048 x 4 bytes that make up the image column.

I would like the output of the query/stored procedure to be:

Value
------------
1 2342
2 2334
3 3343
.....
2048 1001

thanks!

Converting A Hex String To Binary

Jul 18, 2006

I am trying to write a function to convert a hex string to binary. I would like it in a function so I can use it on aggregate data in queries (instead of having to cursor through the data). So, I write my function:

CREATE FUNCTION HexToBinary (@hexstring char(16)) RETURNS binary(8)
AS
BEGIN
declare @b binary(8)
,@sql nvarchar(255)

SET @sql = N'SET @b = 0x' + @hexstring
EXEC sp_executesql @sql,N'@b binary(8) out',@b output
RETURN @b
END

Then, I try to call my function:

SELECT HexToBinary('E0')

...and I get:

Msg 195, Level 15, State 10, Line 1
'HexToBinary' is not a recognized built-in function name.

However, I can get it to work if I use a slightly different syntax:

declare @b binary(8)
exec @b = HexToBinary 'E0'
select @bAny thoughts as to what might be going on? Obviously, the lower syntax does not help me call this function in queries, which is really my goal.

Accessing Image Files Stored As Binary Data

Jul 11, 2006

Hi
When images are uploaded and stored directly into a sql database as binary data (eg in the club starter kit) how can those images be accessed and displayed.
When I open the images table in VWD  and select display data, the cells holding the image data hold a <binary data> tag. What I want to be able to do is get at that data, or actually get at the image so that it is displayed. My reason is this, at the moment the only way to access the images in the sql database after they have been uploaded is to log into the website and view them as an administrator of the site. It would be much simpler if I could access the database directly and view the contents of the images table.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Converting A HEX String To Its Binary Representation

Nov 10, 2006

I am trying to take a hexadecimal representation of a binary number and convert to the true binary representation so that I can compare it against a binary field in one of my tables.

After reading the documentation it seems I should be able to do this with the CAST or CONVERT function. However it does not appear to be working correctly.

Can you tell me why this T-SQL code produces the wrong binary value:

DECLARE @value binary(16)

SELECT @value = CONVERT(binary, '0764DE49749F274EB924E1552FFE09EC')

PRINT @value

This prints out: 0x30373634444534393734394632373445

That is not correct it should be: 0x0764DE49749F274EB924E1552FFE09EC

CHECKSUM Replacement For IMAGE And TEXT

Aug 22, 2006

With this discussion here http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=70328
I started to thinkn about Microsoft really calculated checksum value.

This code is 100% compatible with MS original. That is, the result is identical.
You can use it "as is", or you can use it to see that MS function does not produce that unique values one could expect.

With text/varchar/image data, call with SELECT BINARY_CHECKSUM('abcdefghijklmnop'), dbo.fnPesoBinaryChecksum('abcdefghijklmnop')
With integer data, call with SELECT BINARY_CHECKSUM(123), dbo.fnPesoBinaryChecksum(CAST(123 AS VARBINARY))
I haven't figured out how to calculate checksum for integers greater than 255 yet.CREATE FUNCTION dbo.fnPesoBinaryChecksum
(
@Data IMAGE
)
RETURNS INT
AS

BEGIN
DECLARE@Index INT,
@MaxIndex INT,
@SUM BIGINT,
@Overflow TINYINT

SELECT@Index = 1,
@MaxIndex = DATALENGTH(@Data),
@SUM = 0

WHILE @Index <= @MaxIndex
SELECT@SUM = (16 * @SUM) ^ SUBSTRING(@Data, @Index, 1),
@Overflow = @SUM / 4294967296,
@SUM = @SUM - @Overflow * 4294967296,
@SUM = @SUM ^ @Overflow,
@Index = @Index + 1

IF @SUM > 2147483647
SELECT @SUM = @SUM - 4294967296

RETURN @SUM
ENDActually this is an improvement of MS function, since it accepts TEXT and IMAGE data.CREATE FUNCTION dbo.fnPesoTextChecksum
(
@Data TEXT
)
RETURNS INT
AS

BEGIN
DECLARE@Index INT,
@MaxIndex INT,
@SUM BIGINT,
@Overflow TINYINT

SELECT@Index = 1,
@MaxIndex = DATALENGTH(@Data),
@SUM = 0

WHILE @Index <= @MaxIndex
SELECT@SUM = (16 * @SUM) ^ ASCII(SUBSTRING(@Data, @Index, 1)),
@Overflow = @SUM / 4294967296,
@SUM = @SUM - @Overflow * 4294967296,
@SUM = @SUM ^ @Overflow,
@Index = @Index + 1

IF @SUM > 2147483647
SELECT @SUM = @SUM - 4294967296

Scripting Text, Image Columns

Jul 20, 2005

We have remote users running MSDE entering information into adatabase. To send the data back to the home office, we've written someroutines that export the data into SQL Scripts in text files:DELETE <table> where KeyID=<x>INSERT INOT <table> (fields) VALUES (fields).We then zip up these scripts, and either email or ftp the ZIPs back tothe home office, where a program opens them up and simply "runs" theSQL statements.The new version of my database application contains both TEXT fields(containing rich text) and IMAGE fields (containing file attachmentslike JPGs or excel spreadsheets). I'm worried that our SQL Scripterengine (which we really like) is going to choke on the text and imagefields. Can anyone suggest a similar method to send the SQL dataaround?thanksmatt tag

Is it a known restriction? Is it a restriction from ADO.NET or from the database server?

Is it documented somewhere?

Problem Importing Text Files With Binary Zeros (0x00) Via SSIS(SQL2005). It Is All Fine When Using DTS(SQL2000) Though.

Apr 24, 2008

Hi.

There is a "text" file generated by mainframe and it has to be uploaded to SQL Server. I've reproduced the situation with smaller sample. Let the file look like following:
A17 123.17 first row
BB29 493.19 second
ZZ3 18947.1 third row is longer
And in hex format:
00: 41 31 37 20 20 20 20 20 ”‚ 31 32 33 2E 31 37 20 20 A17 123.17
10: 66 69 72 73 74 20 72 6F ”‚ 77 0D 0A 42 42 32 39 20 first row™ͺ—™BB29
20: 20 00 20 34 39 33 2E 31 ”‚ 39 20 20 73 65 63 6F 6E 493.19 secon
30: 64 0D 0A 5A 5A 33 20 20 ”‚ 20 20 20 31 38 39 34 37 d™ͺ—™ZZ3 18947
40: 2E 31 20 74 68 69 72 64 ”‚ 20 72 6F 77 00 69 73 20 .1 third row is
50: 6C 6F 6E 67 65 72 ”‚ longer

I wrote "text" in quotes because sctrictly it is not pure text file - non-text binary zeros (0x00) happen sometimes instead of spaces (0x20).

The table is:

CREATE TABLE eng (

src varchar (512)

)

When i upload this file into SQL2000 using DTS or Import wizard, the table contains:

select src, substring(src,9,8), len(src) from eng
< src ><substr> <len>
A17 123.17 first row 123.17 25
BB29 493.19 22
ZZ3 18947.1 third row 18947.1 35

As one can see, everything was imported, including binary zeros. And though SELECT * in SSMS truncates strings upon reaching 0x00's, still all information is stored in tables - SUBSTRINGs show that.

When i upload this file into SQL2005 using SSIS or Import wizard the result is following:
< src ><substr> <len>
A17 123.17 first row 123.17 25
BB29 4
ZZ3 18947.1 third row 18947.1 25

This time table is half-empty - all characters behind binary zeros in respective rows are lost.

I stumbled upon this problem while migrating my DTSes to SSIS packages. Do you think there is some workaround, or i need to turn on some checkbox or smth else could help? Please...

Clustered Index And Image/text Data

If I have a table that I want to create a clustered index on. For example sake, say that I have 2 columns in the table. Col1 is char(2), col2 is text (or image). If I create a clustered index on col1, the database needs 1.2% times the size of the table to create the clustered index. Does this include the size of col2, being that text and image data is stored in a separate page chain....?

Full-text Indexing Of An Image Column With A .PDF File

Mar 16, 2005

Hi,

I am having difficulty in indexing a Table when it contains a PDF file in an Image column. Basically I have a table with a unique id, some other fields, and an Image column. The Image column contains uploaded files from a web application. Full-text indexing works fine for all types of files that I have uploaded into this table which includes (.doc, .xls, .ppt) but I get the following message in my Event Viewer if one of thee files is a PDF file.

One or more documents stored in the Image columns with extension '.pdf' did not get full-text indexed because loading the filter failed with error '1x01'.

I have searched Microsoft's site and implemented their prescribed fixes but none has worked including installation of SP3 of Sql Server and/or modifying the registry key to run the Sql server indexing procedure as a single threaded process.

Has anyone experienced this problem? Please help.
