I have a particular production database that on a few recent occasions has suddenly had one of it's tables empty of content. Now there are no jobs or triggers in place neither is any stored procedures that could perform a delete or alter table operation in place. The permissions have been set not to allow this either. The datatype is text only. What is intriguing is the QA server has an exact mirror and this dosen't happen. Has anyone come across this sort of phenomenon?

Hi Guys,
What approach should I use to copy content of a text file. Is BCP capable of doing this? How about SSIS?
Example of the text file's content:
Date, "20060101"
ST_Code, "101"
A_Code, P_Code, T_Code, amount, price
"0001", "1111", "0101", 550, 230
"0002", "1111", "0102", 345, 122
"2001", 0212", 0930", 410, 90
In the example above, I just want to copy the rows Date, "20060101" and ST_Code, "101" into a table.

Lars

Hi all,need advice on the following task:copy the content of a big table from DB_A to DB_B in the same serverthe size of table:~ 7 million rows, ~ 9G in size, 1 clustered pk index, 13 nonclusteredindexcurrent practice:use DTS to copy the data, takes over 20 hours as-- first had to delete existing data of the table in DB_B-- then copy-- all these happen while all indexes are in place.I am trying to check what is the best or most efficient way to copythis kind of data and what wouldbe the expected time for such load.my machine: SQL 2000 Enterprise, 8-way P4, 12G RAM on a EMC Clarrion600 SAN.

I have 1 table with some empty product codes that I have imported from a txt file. And I would like to fill in the empty product codes by taking the previous product code
date product_code
01/01/14 | BIC01 |
03/01/14 | |
01/01/14 | CASH |
04/01/14 | BIC01 |
02/01/14 | CASH |
05/01/14 | |
03/01/14 | CASH |
I though of using the LAG function but the table does not have any specific order.So after running the select, the table should look like:
date product_code
01/01/14 | BIC01 |
03/01/14 | BIC01 |
01/01/14 | CASH |
04/01/14 | BIC01 |
02/01/14 | CASH |
05/01/14 | CASH |
03/01/14 | CASH |

I have to copy a large (3000) amount of different tables from a Oracle machine into an
SQLServer machine.
I am able to do this using a (VB) script.
I use now several methods:
1) INSERT INTO TABLE1 SELECT * FROM SID1..DB.TABLE1 (SID1 is a linked server)
2) INSERT INTO TABLE1 SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(SID1,'SELECT * FROM DB.TABLE1')
3) Also used OPENROWSET method (similar to 2)
For small tables this is fine, however for BIG tables (15M Rows/150Cols) the methods above are too slow.
If I compare the same copy action with a simple DTS, the DTS is 3 times faster.
Also, the DTS seems to bulk copy the data directly into the desired database while the
mentioned methods first fill the tempdb, then the transaction log of the desired database and
then finally the desired table (need very much extra space on your filesystem).
The total size of data is about 300GB.
Can anyone supply me with a simple example how to copy data from an Oracle table into a
SQLServer table in script (or SQL) that is as fast as the DTS and not filling my logfiles??
I read the bcp (which I use for import/export files) and bulk insert commands, but
I do not understand how to use them in this question.

Code Snippet
Hi there,
I'm struggeling for more than a week now with this problem, without a finding the solution.
I have two databases, MS Access and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
Using a procedure in Visual Studio i would like to copy all the records from one table in MS Access into an existing table in SQL Server (the tables have the same name and the same layout)
I tried to prepare one Dataset to copy from Access into SQL Server but when i run the command 'DaSQL.Update(DsSQL, "Tabella") nothing happens (not even an exeption has been raised), looking during debug, the DataSet seems filled though...
Please could anyone explain what's wrong and / or is there a more quicker way to copy data from a table to another?
Note i woul have as a final goal to get data from an AS400 database by ODBC, manage it, and put it on SQL Server for a 'data mining' scope (eliminating the use of MS Access, not suited for FE-BE).
the procedure goes like this;
' Create a connection to the MS Access Database
Dim connectionToAccess As New OleDbConnection(DBConnectionAccString)
strsql = "SELECT * FROM [TABELLA]"
connectionToAccess.Open()
Dim DaAccess As New OleDbDataAdapter(strsql, connectionToAccess)
Dim DsAccess As New DataSet("ACCESS")
DaAccess.FillSchema(DsAccess, SchemaType.Source, "Tabella")
DaAccess.Fill(DsAccess, "Tabella")
' Create a connection to the SQL Database
Dim connectionToSQL As New SqlConnection(DBConnectionSQLString)
connectionToSQL.Open()
Dim DaSQL As New SqlDataAdapter(strsql, connectionToSQL)
Dim DsSQL As New DataSet("SQL")
DaSQL.FillSchema(DsSQL, SchemaType.Source, "Tabella")
DaSQL.Fill(DsAccess, "Tabella")
DaSQL.Update(DsSQL, "Tabella")
Note I tried also the following, withou a result;
DsSQL = DsAccess.Copy
DaSQL.Update(DsSQL, "Tabella")
Please is there someone who could respond !!???

hi everybody,
The problem is, I have a table with one column of varchar(8000) datatype. It has got 1000's of records. Through Query Analyzer, I am not able to view my records after 257 columns in my table, even I increased my textsize by using 'set textsize' command.
Any other setting is available to correct this. Any help is appreciated.

I have a MS SQL table with a derived column, for date the records were imported, and need to delete records, based on the content of this column. What I need to do is delete all records from the table with a date of '2011-11-18'. Now this column is a datetime column, so it contains the time info after the date, i.e. 2011-11-18 09:29:38.000, but no matter what command I try for this:
-Delete from table where Date_Imported like '2011-11-18%'
-Delete from table where Date_Imported like '2011-11-18'
-Delete from table where Date_Imported = 2011-11-18
It comes back saying "0 rows affected", even though I know there are records with that date in the table.

I'm bcp-ing a table to a file. I've noticed that if a varchar column is empty, that both "bcp -c" and "bcp -c -k" export the empty value as #$00. Instead, I'd like to export the value as if it were null.
use monkey
go
create table tab1 (
myColumn varchar(10) null
)
go
insert into tab1 (myColumn) values ('')
go
exec master..xp_cmdshell 'bcp monkey..tab1 out D:data.csv -c -T'
go
drop table tab1
go
I've been fiddling about with other switches but so far haven't come up with a solution other than writing out the full SELECT-statement or updating the original. Anyone with an easier solution?

To do this successfully do I need to backup the Service master, Database master, and database itself from the the Source server, then restore all three of them on the destination server?
(I'm concerned that restoring the source Service Master key to a new target server with an existing sql 2005 install will screw things up big time.)

Hello,I'm not getting any response to this on the SQLDTS newsgroup, so Ithought that I would try here:I just ran into this problem and I can't find any other mention of itthrough Google. I have a text file that is comma-delimited. It alsouses double quotes as text identifiers. A new column has been added tothe file, but currently has no values. I would like to finish mydevelopment so that when it does finally get some values, they will beimported as well. The problem is, the last column does not show up inDTS.I can reproduce this problem easily enough... create a text file withthe following two lines in it:1,"test",2,"test2",Now, create a new DTS package and add a text file connection. Point itto the new file and go through the properties for the file. You willnotice that on the second screen where it displays the preview of thedata there are only two columns shown.This does not happen if there is no text qualifier or if at least onerow has the final column value filled. Is there any way around thisproblem?Thanks!-Tom.

Hi All,
I have a particular issue that has been causing me some problems for a while. I have an SSIS package that imports an excel file into my database, and then performs various data manipulation that I won't go into. The problem I am having is at the import end. The excel source file I am working on is provided to me by my client. It is a fixed format and doesn't change, it contains a header row and there are 32 headings. The trouble I am having is that quite often, the last column is empty, i.e. it contains no data. The header is still there, but theres no data underneath. When I try to import this file using my SSIS package it fails, and complains about needing to remove the metadata for this final column from the External Columns list (VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA). When I try to preview this file in the properties of the Excel Data Source, the last column does not exist. It's as if it's determining that as there is no data in that final column, that it's unnecessary and not part of the data set, even though it has a header.
Now I've done a bit of research, and found cases that a sort of like mine, I know that the excel file has the first 8 records sampled to determine the data format. This problem suggested to use the IMEX=1 extension in the connection string, which didn't help. I also discovered that when using flat files, if you have odd numbers of columns in your comma seperated list there can be problems. But neither of these issues seem to match the issue I'm facing.
Has ANYONE had a similar problem to me, and can anyone offer any kind of assistance regarding what I need to do to import an excel file that may or may not have data in the final column?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Because i get no answers i will try it again:
Hi,
i have the following problem:
I have a matrix with a right subtotal column and this matrix was in a list (because in the end i will have more than one matrix). The list fits perfectly the matrix in design mode. But if i render the report in the viewer or to pdf, an additional blank area (like a blank copy of the subtotal column) was inserted after the right subtotal column of the matrix and increases the list too. You can see this easy by set the backgroundcolor of a list to a color. Without the subtotal column the list fits perfect after rendering. The problem is that this additional blank "column" creates empty pages in .pdf rendering, if the width of the matrix is near the page width. The same behaviour happens if i put the matrix with subtotal in a rectangle.
I must use a list in the end because the the final report contains some matrixes and a subreport.
So is this a bug?
Someone must have this problem too?
Thanks for any help.

I have created some dynamic sql to check a temporary table that is created on the fly for any columns that do contain data. If they do the column name is added to a dynamic sql, if not they are excluded. This looks like:
If (select sum(Case when [Sat] is null then 0 else 1 end) from #TABLE) >= 1 begin set @OIL_BULK = @OIL_BULK + '[Sat]' +',' END
However, I am currently running this on over 230 columns and large tables 1.3 mil rows and it is quite slow. How I can dynamically create a sql script that only selects the columns in the table where there is data in a speedier manner. Unfortunately it has to be on the fly because the temporary table is created on the fly.

Damn! SQLServer2000 can't add a NOT NULL COLUMN even in one emptyexisting table!That is, A is the existing table and it is emtpy, I want to add one NOTNULL COLUMN (col_new) to A using following T-SQL statement, then itwill fail.ALTER TABLE A ADDcol_new varchar(600) NOT NULLGOYou should change it to these statements in SQLServer2000:ALTER TABLE A ADDcol_new varchar(600) NULLALTER TABLE A ALTER COLUMN col_new varchar(600) NOT NULLGOah, ridiculous! right?Fortunately, this stupid behavior is changed in SQLServer2005. Thefirst T-SQL statements works.

Ok.. so I have a fixed position data feed. I read the file in as just whole rows initially, process a specific position and evaluate a conditional split to determine direction of the file for proper processing (file contains multiple recors with different layouts). This all works fine. I then use the derived column feature to process all the columns.
Most of the columns are as simple as SUBSTRING(RecordData,1,10) for example to get the first column. This all works for string data. I then have a column that is a date field. The problem occurs that the code SUBSTRING(RecordData,20,10) returns either a date or empty set of data if no date was in the original file. When this gets sent to the OLEDB connection (SQL Server 2005) into the date field it fails. If the record has a date it works, but if it is empty it fails the insert.
I tried to replace empty strings with NULLs with this code. REPLACE(TRIM(SUBSTRING(RecordData,20,10)),"",NULL(DT_WSTR,10)). This does not work. So my question is how do I bring a date field from a fixed flat file into a SQL datetime field using a derived column? More specifically is how do I set it to NULL if its empty data? When I use the above code it inserts all the rows from the file, but it sets all rows to NULL not just the empty ones.
Thanks.
