Copy Result Set To Another Server From Within A Sproc?

Jun 4, 2007

I've got a stored procedure that selects some rows. These rows need to be placed in a table on another SQL Server.

Currently, I'm using some C#/ADO.NET code to execute the stored procedure, grab the results, connect up to the other server, and dump them there.

Is there a way that I can cut my little program out of the picture? Could I somehow copy the selected rows and insert them into the appropriate table on the other server, from within this stored procedure? I suspect this is way outside the scope of T-SQL (and hence my little program), no?

Copy Subtree, Recursive Sproc With Cursor Doesn't Work

Sep 20, 2007

Hi all,

I have a parent-child table, and i want to copy subtrees of it, so for instance this would be the starting point:
(id, parentId, label)
0, null, World
1, 0, US
2, 1, NY
3, 0, UK
4, 3, London

now i want to copy object 3 (UK) and it's children, so i would get
0, null, World
1, 0, US
2, 1, NY
3, 0, UK
4, 3, London
5, 0, UK_copy
6, 5, London_copy

I have this sproc:

Code Snippet

alter proc CopyObject

(@ObjectId int,

@NewParentId int)

as

declare @NewId int,

@NewName varchar

select @NewId = max(Id) + 1 from Object

select @NewName = [Name] + 'copy' from [Object] where Id = @ObjectId

-- copy object

INSERT INTO [Object]

([Id]

,[Name]

,[ParentId]

select @NewId,

@NewName,

@NewParentId

from [Object]

where Id = @ObjectId

-- copy children and set their parent to the newly created object

declare c cursor fast_forward for

select Id

from [Object]

where ParentId = @ObjectId

declare @ChildId int

open c

fetch next from c into @ChildId

while @@fetch_status = 0

begin

exec CopyObject

@ObjectID = @ChildId,

@NewParentId = @NewId

fetch next from c into @ChildId

end

close c

deallocate c

But htis throws an error that the cursor already exists:

Msg 16915, Level 16, State 1, Procedure CopyObject, Line 66

A cursor with the name 'c' already exists.

Msg 16905, Level 16, State 1, Procedure CopyObject, Line 72

The cursor is already open.

I've tried to think of an approach without cursors, but i can't figure it out. Because on the first pass, the new parentId will be the same as the parentId of the object to be copied. But the copies of the children of this first original object should have the parentid set to id of the copied object, and so all the way down the tree.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Gert-Jan

Cannot Copy Column Names View Result Set

Feb 10, 2007

In SQL 2005 - when I display the results of a View and Copy all rows and columns, the resulting Paste in Excel does not include the column names.

How can I set SQL 2005 so the names of the columns will come along with the content of the copy function?

Background:

When I am using a SQL Query (instead of a view) I have the ability to control whether or not I am able to Include the Column Headers when copying or saving results. The control exists in the Options > Query Results > Results to Grid > Include column headings etc.

My question is how to get this same ability when attempting to copy the results of a VIEW vs. a Query.

Thank you,
Poppa Mike

EXEC Of A Sproc Within Another Sproc

Apr 23, 2004

I'm sorta new with using stored procedures and I'm at a loss of how to achieve my desired result.

What I am trying to do is retrieve a value from a table before it is updated and then use this original value to update another table. If I execute the first called sproc in query analyzer it does return the value I'm looking for, but I'm not really sure how to capture the returned value. Also, is there a more direct way to do this?

Thanks,
Peggy

SQL Server SPROC Cutting Off Varchar Parameter

Feb 5, 2004

Hello,

I am having trouble with a SPROC and I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems. I have a web form where users enter in a large amount of text, the web app saves that data via a SPROC into a varchar(8000) field in a SQL table. However, any amount of text beyond 255 gets cut off. I have double checked and tested my code and I dont seem to find the problem. Below is the beginning of my SPROC and as you can see, I have the correct data type and length. I have also verified the data type and length on the table and it is set at varchar(8000). Any ideas?

SPROC CODE
-----------------------------------------------
CREATE PROCEDURE Add_ProductsReview
(
@Pros varchar(100) = null,
@Cons varchar(100) = null,
@Title varchar(100),
@Body varchar(8000) -- This is the parameter with problems
)
AS......

Thanks!

Permission Problem Running Sproc Using Asp.net 2.0 On Sql Server 2005

Apr 20, 2006

I have a stored procedure in my asp.net 2.0 app that will not run. I am using an sqlcommand object and executenonquery. At first I received an error "execute permission denied". I had already given the user on sql server read and write permissions. So -- since I was not passing the sql server userloginid or password in the connection string, I tried changing the connection string in my web.config to:

"data source=xxxSQL2005;initial catalog=AdventureWorks; User Id=myid;password=mypasswd"

now I get an error that the login has failed for user xxx. So I am wondering what I need to do to run stored procedure in a web app. I am using the full sql server version not express.

Thanks for any help on this.

Why Don't You Guys Provide A Way To Find Out The Dependancies Of Any Object (SProc, Table, View And Etc...) Within SQL Server...

Nov 15, 2007

Why don't you folks (SQL SERVER Management Studio Team or SQL SERVER Database Engine Team) provide an option by using which I would be in a position to know what all the other objects are depended on a selected object and vice versa. That means:

When I select a Table within the SQL SERVER Management Studio if there is an option for understanding "Which all the objects (tables or views) it is depended on (I mean Foreign key and etc... kind of relations) and also Which all the objects (Tables, Views, Stored Procedures and etc...) are using this table", It would be of great help for all developers.

showID

WHERE shows.showID = showAccess.showID

I had it ordering by showTitle and it worked fine, but I need it to order by vidDate.

CASE Function Result With Result Expression Values (for IN Keyword)

Aug 2, 2007

I am trying to code a WHERE xxxx IN ('aaa','bbb','ccc') requirement but it the return values for the IN keyword changes according to another column, thus the need for a CASE function.

WHERE GROUP.GROUP_ID = 2 AND DEPT.DEPT_ID = 'D' AND WORK_TYPE_ID IN ( CASE DEPT_ID WHEN 'D' THEN 'A','B','C' <---- ERROR WHEN 'F' THEN 'C','D ELSE 'A','B','C','D' END )

I kept on getting errors, like

Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 44Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'WHERE'.
which leads me to assume that the CASE ... WHEN ... THEN statement does not allow mutiple values for result expression. Is there a way to get the SQL above to work or code the same logic in a different manner in just one simple SQL, and not a procedure or T-SQL script.

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Make Sproc Return Errors For Underlying Table Errors

Jul 1, 2015

I recently updated the datatype of a sproc parameter from bit to tinyint. When I executed the sproc with the updated parameters the sproc appeared to succeed and returned "1 row(s) affected" in the console. However, the update triggered by the sproc did not actually work.

The table column was a bit which only allows 0 or 1 and the sproc was passing a value of 2 so the table was rejecting this value. However, the sproc did not return an error and appeared to return success. So is there a way to configure the database or sproc to return an error message when this type of error occurs?

The Remote Copy Of Database X Has Not Been Rolled Forward To A Point In Time That Is Encompassed In The Local Copy

May 11, 2006

Hi,

I set up DB mirror between a primary (SQL1) and a mirror (SQL2); no witness. I have a problem when I issue command:

alter database DBmirrorTest
Set Partner = N'TCP://SQL2.mycom.com:5022';
go

The error message is:

The remote copy of database "DBmirrorTest" has not been rolled forward to a point in time that is encompassed in the local copy of the database log.

I have the steps below prior to the command. (Note that both servers' service accounts use the same domain account. The domain account I login to do db mirror setup is a member of the local admin group.)

1. backup database DBmirrorTest on SQL1

2. backup database log

3. copy db and log backup files to SQL2

4. restore db with norecovery

5. restore log with norecovery

6. create endpoints on both SQL1 and SQL2

CREATE ENDPOINT [Mirroring]

STATE=STARTED

AS TCP (LISTENER_PORT = 5022, LISTENER_IP = ALL)

FOR DATA_MIRRORING (ROLE = PARTNER)

7. enable mirror on mirror server SQL2

:connect SQL2

alter database DBmirrorTest

Set Partner = N'TCP://SQL1.mycom.com:5022';

go

8. Enable mirror on primary server SQL1

:connect SQL1

alter database DBmirrorTest

Set Partner = N'TCP://SQL2.mycom.com:5022';

go

This is where I got the error.

The remote copy of database "DBmirrorTest" has not been rolled forward to a point in time that is encompassed in the local copy

Thanks for any help,

Return Subquery Result For Only First Row In Result

Apr 7, 2015

I'm using a subquery to return a delivery charge line as a column in the result set. I want to see this delivery charge only on the first line of the results for each contract. Code and results are below.

declare @start smalldatetime
declare @end smalldatetime
set @start = '2015-03-22 00:00' -- this should be a Sunday
set @end = '2015-03-28 23:59' -- this should be the following Saturday

select di.dticket [Contract], di.ddate [Delivered], di.item [Fleet_No], di.descr [Description], dd.min_chg [Delivery_Chg], dd.last_invc_date [Delivery_Invoiced],

[code]....

In this example, I only want to see the delivery charge of 125.00 for the first line of contract HU004377. For simplicity I have only shown the lines for 1 contract here, but there would normally be many different contracts with varying numbers of lines, and I only want to see the delivery charge once for each contract.

How To Get A Result Set Fron One Server To Another

Jun 10, 2008

Hi,

I would like to know what are the possibilities if I want to:

- run a query on the tables of the server S1
- load a result set to the server S2

On the server S2, I have a linked server for S1, but it takes much more time to execute the query on S2 via linked server than on S1 . I would prefer something like the code would be executed on S1 and (only) the result set would be transferred to S2.

I already have seen a code somewhere in which a procedure on S2 called another procedure on S1 to execute a code, and (only) the result was transferred to S2.
The problem is I dont have an example of such a code, and also that I dont have rights to create procedures on S1.

If somebody has experience on this, or knows some good links/sources about this, it would be a great help.

Thanks
Katarina

SQL Server 2014 :: How To Copy Data Rows From Hosting To Local Server

Mar 11, 2015

I'm a web developer who writes transact-SQL to make my web applications run properly. I'm not real strong in other areas of SQL. Let me explain our set-up and then I'll explain what I want to do:

We have an ecommerce web site and all sales are saved in a SQL Server 2008 R2 database at our hosting company. We also have a local Windows 2012 network that has SQL Server 2014 Express installed.

Here is what I want to do:

I want to copy sales rows from the SQL Server 2008 database at our hosting company and save them in the SQL Server 2014 Express database on our local Windows 2012 server. I'd like to automate this if possible so that it happens each night perhaps. I know there is a way to schedule SQL jobs but I've never actually done this. I also would need to know how to attach to our hosting company DB as well as our local network DB.

Help Needed - How Can I Set Up A Backup SQL Server Machine As An Exact Copy Of My Production SQL Server

Jul 20, 2005

Any help would be greatly appreciated.My problem is that I need to set up a backup SQL Server 2000 machinewhich can be used in case of a failure to my primary. All databases(30 as of now) must be an up to the minute exact copy of productionand include most recent changes in data as well as any structurechanges (Tables, Views, SP's, Triggers, Users . . etc).When I tried this using Transactional Replication, the replicationprocess gets fouled up once I introduce any kind of structure changesto the DB. I've considered the idea of doing periodic backups andrestoring it to my backup SQL server, but this does not give me theconcurrency needed with 0 latency.I've seen articles that recommend using Transaction Replication with'Scheduled Table Refresh', and also doing database dumps to restore onthe backup machine, but I have not been able to find any documentationregarding this to try out. How can I implement this type of backupstrategy in SQL 2000?

Limiting Result Set From MS SQL Server Query

Jul 23, 2005

Hello,I am running SQL Server 2000. I would like to know whetherMicrosoft Transact-SQL has a method for limiting the resultset from a query in a way analogous to MySQL's LIMIT keyword,so that, for instance, if the result set contains 10,000 rows,then only the first 10 rows from the record set are output.Thank you,Best Regards,Neil
