Copy A Database From A Remote Server And Using It On My Local Machine

Sep 14, 2007

Hi and thanks in advance for your help.
I have a dilemma and I need some expert help with this. I am trying to make a copy of a remote Database and then replicated the DB and it's contents on my local machine so I can build a test site to run data with. I tried to remot into the server machine but I guess that feature is not allowed by the honest of the remote machine. Since I build on my local machine and would like to be able to test data on my local machine.... I would like to copy the remote DB to my local computer and then I can run my test app on my local server. The version of SQL on the remote machine is SQL Express 2005 and I have SQL 2005 on my machine. Please give me how to accomplish this please.

Copy A Database To Another Machine

May 1, 2007

Im guessing this is the right forum for this question:

I have a database on a WS2003 box running on MSDE 2000. Were trialling SQL 2005 (currently running on Win XP pro) so what i would like to do is to "copy" the database from the WS2003 box to the XP SQL box. So we can evaluate the database and see what SQL does/doesnt do.

1. How can this be done please?

2. Will it do anything to the original database?

3. Can this be scheduled to be done everyday? if yes how please?

Thank you in advance.

MS SQL Server 2005 - Copy Database From V8 To V9

Nov 5, 2006

Hi dear devs, admins or users!

Two weeks ago I had a problem with transfering databases from v8 to v9, I placed the question here (original message attached), but I received not the answer which I need. I try to transfer databases with the CDW ("Copy Database Wizard"), which should run through 5 action steps. The process stops after the 'action 2', the step "Create Package" failed allways. The error message which I receive is "Library not registered". I was very surprised, because two weeks ago the process stoped after the action 4 (4/5) while the step "Execute SQL Server Agent Job". I changed nothing on my system or databases. The only thing I can remember is the "Microsoft Update" downloaded and installed a new patch, but it wasn't a SQL Server 2005 update or something with databases.

I have now two questions. What means the error "Library not registered" while the CDW process and what could be the reason for the error in 'action 5' "Execute SQL Server Agent Job" while the CDW process?  **(CDW = "Copy Database Wizard")

[original message from 2006-10-17]

I have following problem with the "SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition". I am in a small network and try to copy a database from a version 8.0 to a version 9.0 "SQL Server" (2 computers). I use the "Copy Database Wizard" and the process did 4 from 5 actions correctly, the last action with the name "Execute SQL Server Agent Job" fails allways. My "SQL Server Agent" process is started and runs well. In real I don't need the "SQL Server Agent" in any way in my database, so I don't understand why this process generates this error. I try to copy this old "Portal" "ASP.NET 1.1" database to my new "SQL Server 2005". Can someone help me?

Thanks

Copy A Database In SQL Server 2005

May 9, 2008

Hello all,

I need to copy a database from our production server to my local development machine.

This was easy in SQL 2000, but I'm stumped for SQL 2005. In order to use Management Studio's Database/Tasks/Copy Database feature, I must have SysAdmin rights on not only my local machine, but also on the production server machine. Because there are other important databases on that machine, they won't give me sa rights on the entire production machine.

Someone suggested a two step process:
1. I first script the database
2. Then I use Import/Export Wizard to copy the data.

For scripting, I see that in Management Studio, I can use either Database/Script As, or, I can use Database/Tasks/Generate Scripts. Which is more appropriate? They seem to be very different.

Copying a database seems like a common need. How do other members here do it?

Thanks.

Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

How To Copy Tables From Local Machine To Remote SQL Server

Jul 23, 2005

We currently have a PPTP connection set up for our developers toaccess our development SQL server through a VPN tunnel. When theyneed to copy tables up to the dev SQL from their local machine theysimply do a DTS copy. However, we are now moving to a thin client solution where they willbe working on a terminal server. They will have access to thedevelopment SQL servers and SQL tools such as EM and QA. However, they will not have access to their local SQL server and, therefore, will not be able to directly perform DTS copies. We have exploredseveral possibilities such as exporting tables to a .csv or .mdb fileand then importing them on the development SQL server but this is notideal because things are lost in that process (e.g. primary keys, field names, data types, etc.)My question is this: Is there a way to export and then import SQLtables without losing dependent objects such as primary keys and datatypes in the process? If any of you are working with a similarsituation I would really like to hear how your remote users copyobjects from their remote location to your SQL servers. 2005 Copy Database Objects From One Server To Another

I just upgraded to SQLServer 2005 Standard. I do development in adatabase on one server. When a solution is completely tested, I moveit to the operational database on a different server. With SQLServer2000, I could just open the .adp file and do File->Get ExternalData->Import to move the objects. That does not work with 2005.What is the recommended method for moving objects from one database toanother? Obviously, the objects that changed will not be the sameevery time. Thanks!Jer

Help Needed - How Can I Set Up A Backup SQL Server Machine As An Exact Copy Of My Production SQL Server

Jul 20, 2005

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My problem is that I need to set up a backup SQL Server 2000 machinewhich can be used in case of a failure to my primary. All databases(30 as of now) must be an up to the minute exact copy of productionand include most recent changes in data as well as any structurechanges (Tables, Views, SP's, Triggers, Users . . etc). When I tried this using Transactional Replication, the replicationprocess gets fouled up once I introduce any kind of structure changesto the DB. I've considered the idea of doing periodic backups andrestoring it to my backup SQL server, but this does not give me theconcurrency needed with 0 latency.I've seen articles that recommend using Transaction Replication with'Scheduled Table Refresh', and also doing database dumps to restore onthe backup machine, but I have not been able to find any documentationregarding this to try out. How can I implement this type of backupstrategy in SQL 2000?

[SQL SERVER 2005] Copy Data From One Database To Another On Same Server

Mar 29, 2007

Ok, here is my dilemma
I have an application that has many sites. Each site has it's own database. The databases have common tables (ie the name and fields are the same) What I want to be able to do is when creating a new database, I want to be able to copy certain common table data from one database to another. I have run into an error because the table have an IDENTITY so this is not working

INSERT INTO Containers SELECT * FROM ADMS2_Indian_Point.dbo.Containers

I also tried
USE ADMS2_RSCS
GO
SET IDENTITY_INSERT Containers ON
GO
INSERT INTO Containers SELECT * FROM ADMS2_Indian_Point.dbo.Containers
GO
SET IDENTITY_INSERT Containers OFF
GO

I got an error saying that I need to have a column list. I am trying to use this for any tables, so my question is this..
Is there any way to get around using a column list or is there a way to dynamically create the column list?
Or, Is there a better way that I should be doing this?

Please keep in mind I am not a dba and everything I have learned about SQL is from my good pal Google :)

Thanks for any help

How Do I Copy Jobs From One Machine To Another?

Jul 3, 2007

I am moving my test database from Box A to Box B (to free up resources on my production environment). I need to generate the jobs/schedules for the database and get them over to Box B. The first problem I'm aware of is the sysdatabases table doesn't reference the DB's as the same number...so I think that will present a little difficulty.

I'm pretty knowledgable on SQL server, jobs, etc...but only marginally in the know on system tables. So, I'm not sure if I should be writing queries or generating SQL scripts for the jobs etc.

I'd love to see the starting point for a script so that I can learn this part of SQL Server. NOTE: I'm on SQL 2000 still.

Thanks,
