Copying Files Between Servers

May 18, 2006

I'm trying to copy files between 2 servers on a local network from within a
SQL Job (and Query Analyzer) using xp_cmdshell.xcopy but get an access
denied message returned.

I'm able to successfully do the copy from within a command window so think
the problem has something to do with using the default SQL Server account
but as yet I don't know how to resolve.

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Help!!! Copying Jobs Between Servers

Dec 22, 1999

I have two servers running SQLserver 7.0. I have a number of jobs that are configured to import files from an AS/400 each day. I do not want to recreate these JOBS on the second server, for it took quite sometime to set up only one. I know that I can set up multi server jobs, but I want these jobs to run independant of the Master server. In other words I just want to move a copy of the job over to the next server.

Copying DTS Packages Across Servers

May 6, 2004

HI All,

Now my brain isn't quite where it should be right about now - so hopefully you will be able to put me at rest.

I have been building a new server with SQL2000 on it. Some of the stuff on our existing server is going to be migrated across - however I for the life of me cannot make any sense of how to move stuff (like DTS packages) from one server to another.

moving the Database's - no problems, but all the other guff in the tree (in Enterprise Manager) I cant seem to get.

Any assistance here is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Copying A Database Between Servers

Apr 10, 2008

I am attempting to move a User Database from the Production Server to a Training Server. What is the best/most simplistic way for me to accomplish this task and place this copying action on a schedule of say "every saturday morning @ 7am"

I tried the "Copy Database Wizard" within Enterprise Manager and it successfully copies the database, however when I try to schedule it to happen at a different time...it does not copy the database. It seems to only work when I tell it to perform this action now.

Please help.

Thanks,

Copying Sprocs, DTS To Multiple DBs And Servers

May 3, 2007

We have a growing number of servers and databases on each server that all share the same (sub)set of sprocs and UDFs. DTS packages, which we use for data import, frequently need to be copied between the servers. What is the best way to maintain this? Ideally, I would like to be able to click a button and have a script creating or altering one or more sprocs automatically run aginst all DBs on all servers. Likewise, I'd like to be able to copy DTS packages to all servers.

We use SS2000 SP4 and plan to migrate to SS2005. We also use ASP.net 2.0 and VS 2005 SP1.

Copying DAT Files In 6.5

Mar 30, 2000

I have an 8 GB SQL 6.5 database that I need to move to another server. I know I can create the devices and the database on the new server exactly as they were created on the old server then replace the new DAT files with the old (after shuting down SQL Server). The issue I am running into is that the sort order and character sets on the two servers are different. Will this have an effect if I copy the DAT files? Am I better off using BCP? I'd hate to use BCP because of the time that it will take to move the files.

Thanks for you help

Copying Backup Files To Different Locations

I came up with idea using xp_cmdshell stored proc that I attached on the maintenace plan in executeT-SQL statement task. The statement looks like

Exec master..xp_cmdshell 'copy e:DRbackup*.bak \fgh-sql16ackup$'

Above statement copy all backup files on DR server and takes these to remote server called fgh-sql16.

My question here is ....are there any other effective methods to copy backup files simultaneously to different servers via maintenace plan.

DTS: Copying Data From Text Files To A SQL Server Table

Sep 10, 2001

Hi all,

I got a situation here.....

From a source table (in SERVER1) I get ids of candidates and from another source (in SERVER2) I get their CVs (text files stored in various Folders). My destination table (in SERVER3) has two fields, CandidateId & CandidateCV.

I have to transfer the data in above fashion for nearly 1 million records.
How can I write a DTS package which picks up the text file from SERVER2 based on the CandidateId which comes from SERVER1? Probably I need some kind of looping mechanism which changes the candidate id & his CV file.

Can anyone help???

Thanks...

Best Practices SFTPing Files Between Servers

Sep 28, 2007

Hi-I have a sql 2005 database that stores weekly time and attendance data for 500 users. I need to send the file on a scheduled basis.I'd alo like to have programmatic control over sending the file via my asp,net application's admin pages. (I have roles and security set up on the site) My question is two fold: Can asp.net be scripted to manage a data extraction to a file, (I gotta HOPE so)  THEN is there any sFTP functions built into asp.net?I know I can do this in SQL2005, then have a scheduled event fire off the file via sFTP. but like I said, I'd like to have programmatic control over the file sending. (Of course they have to be sent on SUNDAY!)  Thanks in advance for any advise

Using Agent To Copy Files Between Servers

Aug 10, 1999

I connect to remote servers using PPTP connection. There are 4 web servers and 1 production server on the other side of the firewall. From my staging server, I am supposed to archive the NT event logs(Application and system) for each of the servers.

To solve this problem, I have mapped the C drives of each of the remote servers to my local staging server. I then created a batch file, webevnt.bat containing code,

G:
Cd winnt
Cd system32
Cd config
Copy sysevent.evt c:eventarcweb01sysevent.evt
Copy appevent.evt c:eventarcweb01appevent.evt

Then I used SQL Agent to create a job of type, Operating system command(cmdexec) and typed the following command :

C:atch_~1eventl~1webevnt.bat

When I run the command, C:atch_~1eventl~1webevnt.bat through the command prompt, the files are copied with the correct modified date.
The output is,
1 file(s) copied
1 file(s) copied
But, when I use SQL Agent and start the job containing the same command, the job runs successfully but, the files have a wrong modified date. Moreover, when I view the job history for this job, it says, specified drive not found. 1 file(s) copied. 1 file(s) copied.

Please let me know why this happens.

Thank you.

Use SSIS To Copy Files Between Servers?

Apr 27, 2006

This is a question of whether or not to use SSIS to solve a problem.

I need to copy SQL Server database backup files from a server in the DMZ to a fileserver inside the firewall. The SQL Server is not allowed to write it's backup files directly to the fileserver, so they are written to local disk. A connection can be made from inside the firewall to the SQL Server to copy the files off.

So, I'm considering SSIS for the job. Is it possible to use SSIS to perform the file copies from one remote server to another? If so, is the FTP task required, or can File System tasks be used?

An alternative would be Windows scripting, xcopy, robocopy, etc. but I like the features of SSIS and would like to take advantage of it's flow control, error handling, database scheduling, etc.

Any tips, sample code, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks,

david

Sql Report Works Fine On Internal Servers - Hosed On External Servers - Need Some Help

Nov 21, 2007

I have a report that was designed using SQL Reporting Services that sits on a SQL reporting server. It's nothing too exciting, it is essentially a three page application with legal jumbo on pages 2 and 3 and applicant data in fields on page 1.

We use rectangles to force page breaks to page 2 and to page 3.

When running the report on the report server, it shows and prints fine.

When running the report from the QA website internally, it shows and prints just fine.

When running the report from the production website from a machine internally, it shows and prints just fine.

When running the report from outside of the company network, the report is jacked. It obliterates large chunks of text, crams text together, and creates blank pages.

I need help in determining where I even begin with trouble shooting this!

Linking SQL 2005 Servers To SQL 2000 Servers Problems

Sep 27, 2007

I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.

1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server.
2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers.
3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.

Two of the errors I am encountering are:
------------------------------
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054)
------------------------------
And
------------------------------
The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for the linked server "SCDC250DB" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB".
OLE DB provider "SQLCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Invalid authorization specification".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)

If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.

Thanks!

Script Task: How To Compare Files On FTP With Existing Files In Local Folder Before Transfer!

Apr 24, 2008

In the first step of my SSIS package I need to get files from FTP and dump it/them in a local directory, but it's more than that, the logic is like this:
1. If no file(s) found, stop executing and send email saying no file(s) found;
2. If file(s) found, then compare it/them with existing files in our archive folder; if file(s) already exist in archive folder, stop executing and send email saying file(s) already existed, if file(s) not in archive folder yet, then transfer it/them to the local directory for processing.

I know i have to use a script task to do this and i did some research and found examples for each of the above 2 steps and not both combined, so that's why I need some help here to get the logic incorporated right.

Thanks for the help in advance and i apologize for the long lines of code!
