Could Not Start Mirroring On A Single Laptop With Two Instances Of SQL Server 2005
Jan 3, 2007
I tried to set up mirroring on my laptop.
I have got two instances of SQL Server 2005 SP2 on my laptop (the first one is the default instance).
Checked configuration running the following scripts
SELECT type_desc, port FROM sys.tcp_endpoints;
GO
SELECT state_desc FROM sys.database_mirroring_endpoints
go
SELECT role FROM sys.database_mirroring_endpoints;
GO
SELECT 'Metadata Check';
SELECT EP.name, SP.STATE,
CONVERT(nvarchar(38), suser_name(SP.grantor_principal_id))
AS GRANTOR,
SP.TYPE AS PERMISSION,
CONVERT(nvarchar(46),suser_name(SP.grantee_principal_id))
AS GRANTEE
FROM sys.server_permissions SP , sys.endpoints EP
WHERE SP.major_id = EP.endpoint_id
ORDER BY Permission,grantor, grantee;
GO
Everything is OK on both instances. Tried to start mirroring and I have got this error message:
TITLE: Database Properties
------------------------------
An error occurred while starting mirroring.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Alter failed for Database 'Northwind'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

I could connect to both instances:
C:Documents and SettingsSergeiTchernykh.SSW2000>sqlcmd -U sa -P <password> -S k
ookaburra,5022
1> exit
C:Documents and SettingsSergeiTchernykh.SSW2000>sqlcmd -U sa -P <password> -S k

I could ping my laptop

Hello all!
I want to get into consulting (perhaps a little at first and more once I can support myself on it solely). I am about to start the purchase of a laptop soon, and I want to know which components I should focus on the most. I also want to know which version of SQL Server I should purchase.
From my studies and what I have learned (about to take the test to get my sql server 2005 certificate) I am going to assume that I want to get SQL Server 2005 developer software. However, the part that is not touched on very often, is if I am working with a client that has say, SQL Server 2005 enterprise, x64 exition, and I have developer IA64 edition, would I be able to connect and work on their server?
As far as the hardware is concerned, I am thinking I want a laptop with a large enough screen (I currently get a discount through hp where I currently work and am looking at the models that have a 17 inch screen) so I don't go blind trying to work . I am also thinking I don't need an extremely powerful processor, but I am not sure between athlon and pentium on which I Should choose since I do not have much experience in this area with sql server. I know I want at least 2GB of memory for the simple fact that sql server isnt the only thing I will be doing on the laptop and want some headroom. I also want a large enough hard drive to hold everything, but I definitely want to see if I can get a 7200rpm drive vs a 5400rpm for the simple fact that I have noticed a significant difference in read and write speeds between the 2 drives. I am not too fussed over the video card, as I am not into graphics design or high-end video games (I think world of warcraft is the most intense I have bought in years). I am also thinking that because I wont need to have a very powerful video card, that a mega powerful battery is not super important.
These so far are my thoughts. Please let me know your opinions on what I should focus on/get

I was told that if I wanted to setup mirroring between multiple instance on the same server that each endpoint had to be different number. Is that true? Or can I use the default 5022 for each instance?
Ex.
Server1Instance1
Use endpoint 5022
Server1Instance2
Use endpoint 5022
VS
Server1Instance1
Use endpoint 5022
Server1Instance2
Use endpoint 5023

I have noticed that analysis services has stopped on two instance on my server.For the first instance, I go to configuration manager and try to start the service I get the standard service did not respond in a timely fashion error, if I change the account that runs it from the domain user account to local system it starts up fine, but try changing it back I get the following WMI error: The server threw an exception. [0x80010105], I see this error in google but it always refers to the agent and not analysis services. In the application log, I see the following error...The service cannot be started: Message-Handling subsystem: The message manager for the defaul locale cannot be found. The locale will be changed to US English. File system error: The following error occurred during a file operation: Access is denied. But access denited to what? The services had been up and running for a while and nothing on the server has changed.
As on the second instance gives me the following error in the application log...The file <path>CryptKey.bin' could nor be opened. Please check the file for permissions or see if other applications locked it.
Then further up...The service cannot be started: Message-Handling subsystem: The message manager for the defaul locale cannot be found. The locale will be changed to US English. File system error: The following error occurred while opening the file <path>CryptKey.bin.
I should say the <path> part is me, saving typing not part of the error. And again, if I change the account running the service to local system if all changes and starts fine, but if I try to change it back I get WMI Error: The process terminated unexpectedly [0x8007042b]. If I hit 'apply' a second time I get another WMI Error, except this time it says 'The server threw an exception. [0x80010105].

I just recently replaced my old HP laptop with a Sony VAIO. I installed all of my development software on it, including SQL Server 2005 and the studio. At some point when I am using the studio on this new laptop, if I try to resize any of the columns to better fit the data, it crashes my laptop. I get the infamous Blue Screen of Death.
The laptop is a Sony Vaio BX670P and it has Win XP SP2 with all of the latest and greatest updates loaded on it.
The BSD blames a driver for causing the crash and points out "win32k.exe" specifically. This has never happened to me before.
Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Ok, this is my setup;
Laptop
Installed Visual Web Developer ExpressInstalled SQL Server Express
Server
Windows 2003 serverIIS is working and runs asp 2.0 scriptsInstalled SQL Server 2005 which is running, has remote connections enabled and the SQL browser is also runningThe windows firewall is turned OFF
Router
I have opened port 1433 to point to the server(TCP) and 1434 to point to the server (UPD)
The Problem
Locally on my laptop everything works fine, I can't actually see SQL Express but if I enter MICKEYsqlexpress then connecting to databases works fine.I've setup ftp on the server and I've created a new website using VWD on my laptop, it's connected via FTP and created the website fine, and it runs no problem.
I am in a remote location so I am not connected to the local network, but even if I connect to the local network using VPN I still cannot get this to work. The problem is I am unable to get VWD to connect to SQL on my server. I've tried installing VWD on the server, and it seems the SQL server fine, and shows as just the server name which is "GOOFY".
In VWD on my laptop I've tried entering the server as just "GOOFY" and also "GOOFYmssqlserver" and on both occassions I can an error message saying that a connection to the server couldnt be reached, and it's usually because the server is not setup to accept remove connections (but mine is). It also says something about "Named Pipe", but I've checked the server and that option is not enabled, I have TCP/IP enabled on the SQL server of the server.
Can anyone help me to make a remote sql connection to my server?

I have a table called 'AssetPlacements' that shows the dates when certain objects (AssID) were placed at certain locations (LocID).
ID AssID LocID PlacementDate
1112015-05-01
2122015-05-06
3132015-05-09
4212015-05-03
5222015-05-07
6232015-05-11
I'd like to show the assets with a start date and end date for the placement of the asset.
The start date to be the placement date and the end date to be the next placement date of the asset.
Where there is no next placement date to then show the end date as the current date, so hopefully the table will show as the following.
ID AssID LocID StartDate EndDate
1112015-05-01 2015-05-06
2122015-05-06 2015-05-09
3132015-05-09 [GetDate()]
4212015-05-03 2015-05-07
5222015-05-07 2015-05-11
6232015-05-11 [GetDate()
I'm guessing some sort of recursion is required here to produce this.

Hello. Is it possible on a server with 2 instances of SQL 2005 running, to have EACH instance get up to 2.8 GB of RAM. I've done that on single instance machines, just not sure about multi-instances, if you can use the same settings to get 2.8 GB each, assuming the overall memory is at least 6GB... Thanks, Bruce

Can someone explain what does this mean? This is from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/dbmirror.mspx
<quote>However, all these techniques for coordinating client redirection with a database mirroring have an important limitation. Database mirroring occurs only at the database level, not the server level. Be careful if your application relies on querying several databases on a server, or uses multi-part object names to query across several databases. When several databases reside on one server, and they are mirrored to a standby server, it is possible that one of several databases might fail over to the standby but the others remain on the original server. In that case, you might need one connection per database that you are querying, so that you do not attempt cross-database queries on a standby server where only one database is a principal and the remaining are mirrors.</quote>
Also I read somewhere that if one mirrored DB fails, all other mirrored DB should also be transferred to the mirror.
For example: Let's say Srv1 (principle) and Srv2 (mirror) and Srv3(witness) are SQL servers with only default instances. The SQL instance has 4 DBs (DB1, DB2, DB3, DB4) and all of them are mirrored to Srv2.
An ASP.NET application has four seperate connection strings like:
objConn1 --> Data Source=Srv1;Failover Partner=Srv2;Initial Catalog=DB1;Integrated Security=True;
objConn1.connect();
objConn2 --> Data Source=Srv1;Failover Partner=Srv2;Initial Catalog=DB2;Integrated Security=True;
objConn2.connect();
objConn3 --> Data Source=Srv1;Failover Partner=Srv2;Initial Catalog=DB3;Integrated Security=True;
objConn3.connect();
objConn4 --> Data Source=Srv1;Failover Partner=Srv2;Initial Catalog=DB4;Integrated Security=True;
objConn4.connect();
If DB2 failsover to Srv2 (mirror), why should all other DBs be failedover?
Thanks

EXECUTE sp_addlinkedserver 'North', 'OLE DB Provider for Jet',
'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','C:Practice FilesNorthwind.mdb'
SELECT * FROM North...Customers
I have 2x sql 2005 servers at home at different machines. I'm logging on both machines by using windows authentication. How can I make a linked server between them?
Thank you.

I just installed sql server 2005 and trying to pick it up before I start a new job as a developer using sql server 2005. The problem is that I have three instances installed, the one that works was installed prior to installing sql server 2005 when I installed System Architect a CASE tool which utilizes sql server for its encyclopedias.
My initial installed I used the default settings with the default instance and that does not work. I later ran set up again and installed another instance and that does not work. For some apparent reason the POKIN10SQL instance is over riding everything rendering every other instance non-functional.
When I try to connect to the one of the other instances, the error message is
"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connection to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL does not allow remote connections. (Provider Network Interface, error: 26 - Error locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)"
I don't think the remote connection is the problem as I went into the properties settings and checked the connection settings and allow remote connections is checked.
In terms of locating the instance, I installed SQL Server as specified in the handbook ... with the default instance and then a named instance.
Something seems to be wrong with the POKIN10SQL instance which was installed with System Architect, I need System Architect so I need a work around rather then an uninstall.
Can someone help please?

I had a server with SQL Server 7.0
I installed a named instance of SQL Server 2000 and then i passed all my DB
of the 7.0 instance to the 2000 instance.
Then i removed the 7.0 instance, that was the default instance.
So at the moment there is only the 2000 version, but it isn't the default
instance
Can the 2000 instance become the default instance? (So that clients can
connect to it simply through computer name, and not creating an alias)
thanks

I am working on a proof of concept to take to our Technical Board.
This POC is concearned with SQL server 2005 Mirroring for High Availability and Failover in a Highly Critical business sector.
The problem is that we use custom web pages to give the Operations Center an overview of the status of the system and that there are so many metrics available (not may are well documented). I have looked at the following
sys.database_mirroring_witnesses
is_suspended to show the state of the Sync
database_name to return the name of the mirrored database
safety_level_desc to show that the Safety level is at Full
Principal_server_name to show the name of the Principal server
Mirror_server_name to Show the Name of the Mirror Server.
I am at a loss as to what is the best approach as I do not want to display too much Information and confuse.
The Servers are locked down to remove any permissions not required so I have to create a SQL account with only acces to the required sys views. one issue is that the following SQL only works on the Principal
Code SnippetSelect * from sys.database_mirroring where mirroring_guid is not null
The Principal returns
Code Snippet
7 267CF8D3-8066-44EA-84BD-B7EA25C3F779 4 SYNCHRONIZED 2 MIRROR 20 2 FULL 1 TCP://DNGLHRSQL051.XX.XX.XXX:5022 DNGLHRSQL051 TCP://LHRSQL029.XX.XXX.XXX:5023 1 CONNECTED 40000000010300001 10 NULL UNLIMITED
where the Mirror will return nothing..
The configuration of the User is identical on both Principal and Mirror and is as follows
Master Public
MSDB Public, dbm_monitor
I have read that the User also requires "view any Database" but on the Mirror this database is not available on the Mirror as it is in Sync.
Is this an undocumented Feature?
Any help greatly appreciated
Regards
Andy

I am trying to set up a SQL mirroring senario - I have some questions
Do I need to purchase an extra SQL Server license for the SQL server instance on the Mirror? what about the Witness does that also need a separate license/
Can the witness be a virtual server on the Mirror box itself? Do I still require a license if the witness is on a virtual server?
Thanks

Hi all,I just asked some people to help me out and phone microsoft with thefollowing information, kindly they refused unless we setup a supportcontract with them first, for pre-sales information. (That really doesnot sound like good business sense to me - anyway here is our problem,if anyone could help thanks)."To tell and ask microsoft:We will be setting up a microsoft sql server 2000 instance running on awindows 2003 server.1) We need to check this can run alongside a microsoft 2003 sql server(either workgroup or standard edition), on the same machine. Are thereany .dll clashes if we do this? If there are can we run SQL Server2000, in a virtual machine running windows 2000 professional. (I have alicenced copy we can use for this).2) If we run one instance of 2000, and one of 2003 of the sql servers,can one use the processor licence model, and one use the CAL licencemodel."Thanks for any help, and any idea why they actually force you to usenews groups for pre-sales information?David

I am trying to install multi instances on my server cluster 2003 R2 Sp2. Because of the compatibility issues with my services I need to install both SQL 2000 and 2005. With 2000 I can easily specify the instance and servername. The server name can be the same, but the instance has to be different. Is this true for 2005? I have found so far that for every new instance that you create that you need to have a different virtual server name. How can you utilize the same virtual name and have multi insances
servername$instance1
servername$instance2
and so on

Hi all,
This is my first C# (2.0) Windows based app accessing a local SQL Server database. Ive build a couple of web based apps using C#.
First I just copied a datbase access wrapper class from one of my web apps and used that. It works, but, the database shown in Server Explorer in VS2005 shows the table as empty. The table in /bin/ however, is updated as expected. Before I realised that there were seperate instances of the database i stripped everything down to a very simple example
string sConnectionString = "Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\Database1.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True";
SqlCommand foo = new SqlCommand("INSERT INTO tblTest (foo) VALUES ('atest')");
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(sConnectionString);
conn.Open();
foo.Connection = conn;
foo.ExecuteNonQuery();
foo.Dispose();
conn.Close();
This little tester windows based app has a simple tester drag and dropped grid view in it. When i run /pathToApp/bin/Debug/<AppName>.exe, independantly of VS, the grid view is full of the value "atest" as expected, but not when ran under visual studio. As I said above i found (at least i think this is right) there is a debug and user instance of the database. So im guessing I need two connection strings if i want to update both whilst dev'ing the application.
Ive had a look throuhg connectionstring.com and, to be honest, im confused... Any help for what the second connection string should be would be greatly apprecaited.
Thanks.

My client has a server running MS 2003 Server for Smal Business Server, and it has SQL Server Express 2005 installed (I believe it is installed 3 times, as part of SharePoint, Veritas Backup Exec and ACT! applications).
I am trying to implement an application that uses SQL Server 2000, but the Server 2003 SBS does not support that version. So I need to launch an additional instance of SQL Server Exp 2005.
To do so, do I need to download and install SQL Server Express 2005 software again? Or can I just run SQLSVR.exe from an existing instance, but with a different instance name (sqlservr.exe -s<InstanceName>?
The reason I need another instance is that these existing instances limit DDL statements.
I am new to this and compare it to launching MS Word multiple times - you don't need to reinstall Word to run it multiple times.
Is launching from the command line a bad idea - and if it is, what is the better way to ensure that it launches under the local system context a service?
Thanks in advance for any help and insights. It is much appreciated.

Hi,
We have (after several weeks of testing in all kind of environments) send out a new version of our application to several of our customers. Within days problems where drippin in; After looking for the problem on various customer situations we found a problem which I think is rather disturbing and very odd. I'll describe the situation, on which we finally managed to recreate the problem, here.
In my problem I use the following configuration:
Windows 2003 (standard edition) AD network with 2 domain controllers, multiple Windows XP workstations, some without SQL instances, some with SQL 2000 instances, some with SQL 2005 instances and even one with SQL 7 running.
All run a 32 bit OS.
Tools to reproduce:
ListSQLSvr application (found on SQLDev.net) to enumerate the instances.
Problem description:
--------------------------------------------------
I am running the machine called DEV001, which has SQL 2000 (instancename DRUMIS) and SQL 7.0 (has no instancename so this is the root instance) installed.
In any 'normal' situation all the runnings SQL instances are visible on the network like this:
Code Block
C:>listsqlsvr -X
(local);Clustered:No;Version:7.00.623
ADM002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS
DEV001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV002EXPRESS;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
DEV002EXPRESS
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICEWSUS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
SUP001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
When I turn the SQL 2005 Browser service off on the machine called DEV002 the list looks like:
Code Block
C:>listsqlsvr -X
(local);Clustered:No;Version:7.00.623
ADM002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS
DEV002
DEV002EXPRESS
DEV004DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICEWSUS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
SUP001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
Notice that the browser service might be off on DEV002, you can still see the EXPRESS instance and a new root instance has appeared (though it doesn't exist!)??
After restarting the Browser service all is OK again.
When I turn on Hide Server in the SQL 2000 TCP/IP properties (or turn it on in the registry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerDRUMISMSSQLServerSuperSocketNetLibTcp] "TcpHideFlag"=dword:00000001) on the DEV002 computer something real scary is happening..
The list looks as follows:
Code Block
C:listsqlsvr -X
(local)
ADM002
DEV001
DEV002
DEV004
INSADBACKOFFICE
INSADOFFICE
SUP001
When someone has entered a database (for example the backoffice database on INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT) the list looks as follows (for a short moment; 5 secs or so):
Code Block
C:listsqlsvr -X
(local)
ADM002
DEV001
DEV002
DEV004
INSADBACKOFFICEDEVELOP;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICE
SUP001
Notice now that ALL instances are gone and no extended information is available. In the Query Analyser and in the SQL Management Studio when browsing you'll see this as well!
When someone is accessing a database instance it appears for a few seconds again.
Since our installation and applications rely on selecting a existing instance it will fail in the above situations (or at least not showing all available instances).
In my opinion this is a bug somewhere!
Note that even when the SQL Services are stopped on DEV002 (leaving the Browser service running) it still seems to block out ALL instance on the ENTIRE network!
I don't mind that one INSTANCE or even the entire MACHINE is hidden from the network, but ALL instances on ALL machines??
And the SQL Browser issue also worries me a bit since it does not stop the possibily to browse the SQL instances; it removes the SQL2000 instances but adds a root instance which doesn't even exist! Also the extended info is stripped.
Can anyone help me solve this/advise?
Also mind that in any situation there might run a lot of computers with a lot of SQL instances and I cannot tell our customers to find which machine has the SQL TCP/IP properties set to Hide...
It even seems that in some situations SBS 2003 does the hiding automatically on Install? And if so, when and why?
