Create Database On A Virtual Drive (Created With Subst) Failed
May 26, 2007
When I try to add a (SQL Server 2005 Express Edition) database to my project (I'v tried a windows application and an ASP.NET application) in Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition; It fails with an error like this :
"create database failed. some file names listed could not be created (...)"
but when I open the project from the real path It works.
Is this a bug? Is there any solution? (In many situations there is a need for working with virtual drives. There must be some work around ...)
Hi! I have a piece of code that connects to the master database and uses the simple 'CREATE DATABASE MYDATABASE' statement to create a new database on an sql server 2005 express instance.
I then close that connection and try to open a new connection using my newly created database. I use integrated authentication in both cases. However, I get the following error: Cannot open database "MYDATABASE" requested by the login. The login failed.Login failed for user 'DOMAINNAMEusername'.System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open database "MYDATABASE" requested by the login. The login failed.
I don't get this error all the time. I tried to run my code many times and it some times work. But in some cases it doesn't. The database is always created but some times I cannot connect to it. But again, if I wait a little and try again with the same database, the connection is made.
I know that my connections are opened and closed normally and they don't remain open. So I don't believe I reach the maximum number of available connections.
I also sometimes get this exception : A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.
I am setting up SQL audit on sql servers in my environment based on requirement. I want to create database specifications ASAP database created. I tried DDL trigger but Audit doesn't support triggers. So I created audit specifications on model database. the only problem with this is every specification created on new database with same name.database specification name includes newly created database name or other methods to create database specifications on newly created databases.
In 6.5 , I was NOT able to use mapped network drive for new database device if the MSSQLSERVER service is running under local system account, but if I changed it to using a domain a/c which has the authority to create files on mapped drive, I was able to do it.
But if I tried it in 7.0, it never work and got msg: Server: Msg 5105, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Device activation error. The physical file name 'e:est2.mdf' may be incorrect. Server: Msg 1802, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check previous errors.
Is it something that's normal for 6.5 and 7.0 ???? i.e. we can only create databases on LOCAL drives ? I am just thinking of in case we run of space locally, we can temporarily make use of remote mapped network drive. (say at time of upgrading)
I have a network drive that is mapped as Z: on my local machine. When creating a new database, that drive does not show up in the list of available paths. If I try to hardcode the drive/path info, I get an error message: "The system cannot find the path specified."
I need to create a SQL server database and add some tables to it. Then access it with a C# application. The problem is that the new SQL server database and it's tables must reside on an external hard drive. How do I point SQL server to this external drive, so that I can create a database on this drive and then create tables and access data on it?
We got an error "Failed Virtual Allocate Bytes: FAIL_VIRTUAL_RESERVE"

Why we still use such relic configuration it is not my fault. i'm investigate log and find that memorystatus "Optimization Queue" section has really huge values.

What forced bPOOL to allocate pages in MTL? How to determine that queries? Same about SQL OS.As workaround i increase -g startup option to "-g2048", and "max server memory" was decreased to 54Gb.
I am trying to remotely create a database through a database creation tool I created, and I keep getting the following error:
The file "\10.116.204.105DataWMS_TDMN_Data.MDF" is on a network path that is not supported for database files. CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.
The path is located on a RAID 5 server. I can create a database while on the server on the E: drive. Also, my application can drop the database remotely from my laptop, but it cannot recreate it.
The creation works with no problem on the C: drive. The server is on a different VLAN, but I have the privileges to access it. The problem appears to be related to the 3 hard drives combined together as the E: drive. I have excellent skills in SQL, but my understanding of RAID is about nothing.
First of all: I don't really know a lot about MSSQL-Servers, so this question might sound a bit silly ;)
Today I wanted to test an application, that uses a MSSQL-Server for the databases. As they said, that a MSSQL7-Server is required, I thought that a MSSQL-Express 2005-Server would also do the job.
But when it's time to set up the database, I get the following error:
With searching the net, I didn't found a solution to my problem...
Does this in the end mean, that I need to install (and buy!) a MSSQL7-Server, because the application won't run with a MSSQL-Express2005-Server? Or is there any way to get this thing up'n'running?
trying to get a new database created then running a script to created the tables, relationships, indexes and insert default data. All this I'm making happen during the installation of my Windows application. I'm installing SQL 2012 Express as a prerequisite of my application and then opening a connection to that installed SQL Server using Windows Authentication.Â
E.g.: Data Source=ComputerNameSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=master;Integrated Security=SSPI; Then I run a query from my code to create the database eg: "CREATE DATABASE [MyDatabaseName]".
From this point I run a script using a Batch file containing "SQLCMD....... Myscriptname.sql". In my script I have my tables being created using "Use [MyDatabaseName]   Go  CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MyTableName] .....". So question is, should I have [dbo]. as part of my Create Table T-SQL commands? Can I remove "[dbo]."? Who would be the owner of the database? If I can remove the [dbo]., should I also remove dbo. from any query string from within my code?
I have installed SQL Server 2005 Express in windows vista. I am trying to create database it is giving me error "CREATE DATABASE Permission denied in database 'master'".
I read some article and they told, have to add an administrator account from SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configration. But, I cannot find any option in SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration called "Add New Administrator".
I Installed SQL server 2005, installation completed with out any warnings. but when trying to configure reporting services it is not configured and throwing error msg as create virtual directory.
and the error msg looks like
" ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: The virtual directory specified is not valid. Make sure the specified name is not too long and doesn't contain illegal characters. (example: ;)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.CreateVirtualDirectory(String virtualDirectory, String path) "
I have a big problem to solve: I use MsSqlServer 2000, Analysis service. I have cubes and virtual cubes. I have a dimension of consult, they have a hierarchy that change every month. for example: In june the consult "John" is in D11, in September he is on D14,... Hierarchie: D10 -> D11, D12, D13 - > C1, C2.. For this reason when i want analysis The consult John in a year(12 months) my result is wrong. With this changes in the hierarchie my analysis become wrong! I thought in the end of every month store the cube in a local cube, like a picture of every consult, with his sales e others measures. With this i can analysis the consult in a specific month rightly, but i need the anlysis in a year. And in a year i would have 12 local cubes, then i could acess them and do a right analysis. How could i access 12 local cubes? Can i create a virtual cube with this 12 local cubes? Is there another solution for this problem?
We regularly deploy our product to client's sites and install a named instance of SQL Server 2005 and Reporting Services on their Windows Server. We use the instance name "lgs" during SQL setup and it automatically ensures we have a http://server/Reports$lgs and http://server/ReportServer$lgs to work with.
A recent deployment had some trouble with their OS and we have needed to reinstall the Reporting Services component of SQL. After reinstalling, the virtual directories for Reports$lgs and ReportServer$lgs are gone. I have used the Reporting Services Configuration tool to create new virtual directories but when I enter Reports$lgs or ReportServer$lgs as the names I get an error. The error says that the virtual directories cannot
be created due to illegal characters in the names.
How can I create the same virtual dirs that would have normally been created during initial installation?
Hello all,my question might be trivial but since my background isn't DB i'll dareto ask it any way:how to create a real (not virtual) table from view1 & view2 ni sqlserver?what should i do specificly in the sql server application & what is thesyntax for that?i thank all of you, groupy.
Being a very novice SQL Server administrator, I need to ask the experts a question.
How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Can someone provide me with instructions?
After detaching the database I placed the database files and log files in the D folder as C drive was full. When i try to attach the files I am getting an error Failed to attach database Microsoft SQL Error 7622 (QCFTCAT Full text catalog).
I checked there is a folder in C drive by name QCFTCAT and the C drive has no space. What does this folder means please let me know on the same.

Hi, Will SQL7 create all databases on C: drive only from now on?
After SQL7 Beta3 installation I tried to create a new db but in the 'Browse' window in 'Create DB' procedure I can see only C: & D: drives (btw D: is CD-ROM). It doesn't see my E:, F: & G: hard drives. When I try to create my db using 'create database' statement it again gives me an error 'path not found'.
Also, I have 512 Mb free on C: drive, but when I create new db with 100-mb data + 50-mb log on C: SQL7 says that I don't have enough space for this db.
Does anybody had the same problem already? I need to convert my Sybase db into SQL Server7 and got this problem with creating db right in the start.
We have a bunch of SQL databases that are used for a similar number of IIS sites (we are talking of close to 500 sites), dealing with a .NET e-learning application
While we manage to create a virtual folder for the e-learning content, we do have one database for each site. So, when it comes to update the whole platform, we are talking about running one script per site, which may take about 5 seconds per user per site. With a total of 300.000 users and sites, it may come to more than 17 days running the update script.
Is there a way similar to that on IIS to create a symbolic link from one table in one database to another table in a diferent database in a diferent or same server?
Hi,On my laptop I am running Virtual Server 2005 with 2 x Windows 2003Servers. Both the VS can access the internet and shared files on thehost laptop. On the host laptop I have a SQL Server 2000 running.I have written a Windows Service to detect Application Errors and fireduplicates of events to the database, and this service sits on both VS.It does work as I have tested it on host. BUT everytime I makeapplication errors on the VS nothing is deposited into my database.Very frustrating!I have also tried to create a ODBC connection through the Data SourceAdministrator, and when I enter the login credentials for SQL I getconnection error messages.Any suggestions would be great!ThanksSun
I created the db with the attached script and I am able to access ituntil I reboot the server. I've tried enabling flag 1807 via the SQLserver service and the startup parameters of the instance. In allcases the database always come up suspect after a reboot. There wasone instance where I was able to recover, but I am not sure how thathappened.Does anyone have an idea of how I can reboot the server without thedatabase becomming suspect?USE MASTERGODBCC TRACEON(1807)GO--DBCC TRACEOFF(1807)--DBCC TRACESTATUS(1807)GOCREATE DATABASE ReadyNAS ON( NAME = ReadyNAS_Data,FILENAME = '\NAS1NASDiskSQL ServerReadyNASReadyNAS_Data.mdf',SIZE = 100MB,MAXSIZE = 20GB,FILEGROWTH = 20MB)LOG ON ( NAME = ReadyNAS_Log,FILENAME = '\NAS1NASDiskSQL ServerReadyNASReadyNAS_Log.ldf',SIZE = 20MB,MAXSIZE = 100MB,FILEGROWTH = 10MB)
Is there a better way to deal with the virtual log files?...I see several approaches in dealing/decreasing the virtual log files for a database..want to know what's the best n safest approach, from the masters here?
"Database XYZ has more than 1000 virtual log files which is excessive. Too many virtual log files can cause long startup and backup times. Consider shrinking the log and using a different growth increment to reduce the number of virtual log files."
Hi all (newbie @ asp.net)(oldie @ ASP 3)What is the purpose of using an attached MDF database files in the App_Data folder on a web site as to importing it into the SQL server directly or creating it on the SQL server. Does a mdf database attached file purely use the SQL server as a connection interface. Is it something similiar to DSN(ODBC) Connections for ms access databases.
I have been trying to use openrowset with a shared drive, and even though the share has "full control" permissions granted to "everyone" and the accout that SQL runs under has been granted explicit full control permissions I am unable to open the file which itself has no security on it.
Can I not use a \ path and only use mapped drives?
Thanks
below works...
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=C:5People.xls', [Sheet1$])
below doesn't work...
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=\cluster02FileManager5People.xls', [Sheet1$])
I am administering several SQL Servers running SQL Server 2005 SP2 Build 3042. I have a common maintenance plan that runs on each of the servers. The maintenance plan runs fine on all the servers except for one. On the one server the Database Integrity check fails with the following error:
Check Database integrity on Local server connection Databases: <list of databases> Include indexes Task start: 2008-02-21T00:05:42. Task end: 2008-02-21T00:05:46. Failed0) Alter failed for Server €˜XYZ€™
I created a test maintenance plan to just do the integrity check and selected one database only and this also failed with the same error message. I ran this test maintenance plan and configured it for each of the databases in question and it failed each time. If I run the DBCC manually against the databases they all report fine.
I read some of the post that talked about the €œAllow Updates€? being set incorrectly but that does not apply to my problem since my configured and run values are set to 0.
I have TFS installed on one machine, and the SQL Server database on another. I made the unfortunate mistake of installing SQL Server to the OS drive (C : ), so the TFS database is writing to this drive. How can I switch this to write to another drive (e.g. E:)?
