Create Database Using Local Variables
Feb 4, 1999
I have an installation script and want to create a database based on some data in a table (config). Testing the script though I get a message:
Msg 170, Level 15, State 1
Line 12: Incorrect syntax near '@DBData'.
The relevant sql is:
declare @DBName varchar (40)
declare @DBData varchar (40)
declare @DBLog varchar (40)
declare @DBSize int
select @DBName = obj_txt from config where obj_nm='DBName'
select @DBData = @DBName + '_Data'
select @DBLog = @DBName + '_Log'
select @DBSize = obj_int from config where obj_nm='DBSize'
raiserror('Creating Database %s ....',0,1,@DBName) with nowait
Create Database @DBName
on @DBData = @DBSize
Log on @DBLog = @DBSize
I don't think there's anything wrong, apart from the fact I am using the local variables. Is this allowed on a Create Database statement? I haven't found anything in Technet that may help.
Here's hoping....
Thanks
Dan

I saw a video on how its possible to create a local database so that when the application is being deployed, the mdf file will be deployed with it and will contain the enter data. The instructor(Beth Messi) showed that all I need to do is to add the .mdf file using the "Rightclick Project name in solution explorer > select add > add new item > then in the dialog that opens, select SQL database and click ok. I did this but the Visual Studio kept saying: "An error occored while extablishing a connection with the server. When connecting SQL Server 2005, this failure may have been caused by the fact that under the default settings of SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (Provider: Shared memory provider, error: 40 - could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
Honestly, I don't know how to go futher with this. The SQL server am using is the professional edition and I have been able to use it through Visual Studio to create Databases. It connects alright in that senario. Please I really need help here.

WHERE @variable = '%Thomas%'
IF @@ROWCOUNT > 0
PRINT 'Employee Name is ' + @variable

when i execute it, it said employee not found. what do i need to add or revise?
it should be:

Hi
I am trying to use a global variable in a case when and am not getting the correct results. If I use static data, it works fine.
Here is a tableless example, which should return Shipper. Any ideas are appreciated.
Code:
declare @shipperGBS varchar(3000)
declare @sQuote char
set @sQuote = char(39)
set @shipperGBS = 'ACI,ADO,ALD,AMS,AWB'
set @shipperGBS = Replace(@shipperGBS, ',', @sQuote + ',' + @sQuote)
set @shipperGBS = @sQuote + @shipperGBS + @sQuote
select case when ('ACI' IN (@shipperGBS)) then 'Shipper' else 'Consignee' end as ClientCharge

Hey guys, needless to say I'm new at this.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to execute a SQL string via exec and inside it set the value of a local variable. I understand that I cannot do this the way I'm currently doing it because an Executed string runs in a scope of its own so local variables are invisible. And sure enough this is the error I get. So how do I make this work?
Code snip:
declare @ErrMessage as varchar(1000)
set @Sql = 'if exists ( select * from ' + @TargetTable + ' where (' + @ValueField + '=' + '''' + @NewValue + ''''
set @Sql = @Sql + ' and ' + @TagField + '= ' + '''' + @Tag + '''' + '))' + @CRLF
set @Sql = @Sql + 'set @ErrMessage = ''Insertion could not be performed. ' + @NewValue + ' is already an entry in the table. '''
So what I want is check if a certain table has entries...what table? I don't know, there are tens that this check will apply to. And if that tavle has an entry that satisfies the where clause then assign the appropriate error message to @ErrMessage.
I understand sp_executesql might do the trick because it allows passing local params back and forth.
Any ideas on how to make this work? I appreciate the effort.

I have a function that returns a table of matching names. For the most part it returns under 5,000 results which doesn't cause too much lag joining to the search report data (which is indexed). But sometimes there might be 10,000 + search name results. I find this and higher can cause excessive lag joining. Is it possible to index this result table from the function? Or any other suggestions?
THANKS

I would like to know if there is a penalty for Varchar variables in stored procedures if I declare them Varchar(8000) instead of Varchar(1000).
I have a lot of variables and sometimes the content will be more them 1000 characters.
Is memory only allocated for the the actual contents or for the complete declared length?

I am brand spankin new to stored procedures and don't even know if what I want to do is possible. From everything I've read it seems like it will be. I have a table, punchcards. In this table are all the punch in/out times for a week. I want to create a stored proc to calculate how many hours a punchcard entry is.
Thats the dream.
The reality is that I can't even get a tinyint from a table to load to a variable and be printed out. I am using sql server 8.
Here is what I have as of this moment for my sp.
ALTER PROCEDURE usp_CalculatePunchcard
AS
DECLARE @dtPP DateTime
SET @dtPP = (SELECT thursday_in1
FROM punchcards
WHERE (punchcard_id = 1))
/*
Also tried....
SELECT @dtPP=thursday_in1
FROM punchcards
WHERE (punchcard_id = 1)
*/
PRINT @dtPP
RETURN
/*
for some reason i can't use GO ... even though every
document i've read on stored procedures has used GO
and none use RETURN
*/
The only output this is producing is ' Running dbo."usp_CalculatePunchcard". '
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am about to kick someone/something.
Thanks

Hi Everyone
I am at the stage of architecting my solution
My goal is to develop the system on a windows application and pda
There is a central server which will create a publication called inventory
The laptops which host the windows application will be subscribers to the central server using merge replication
The client now wants the PDA using SQL Mobile to synchronize with the local subscirber database on the laptop using active sync. They dont want to do it via WIFI to the IIS Server at the central server
I have been reading for days and I am still unsure whether this is possible to do.
I know Appforge provide a conduit for palm to access synchronization but not local sql databases
I would appreciate your help immensley

I am stuck on creating views using the variables. I keep on getting the 'CREATE VIEW' must be the first statement in a query batch error. I understand that views need to be the first statement, but I have a lot of views that need to reference specific variables - is there any way to do this?
The code I am using is as follows:
DECLARE @view varchar(MAX)
DECLARE @database varchar(30)
SET @database = 'KateTEST3'
--Insert views
SET @view = 'USE ['+@database+']
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON;
CREATE view [dbo].[userssupplier]
as
SELECT *
FROM dbo.Users
WHERE (User_Type = 4.0) OR
(User_Type = 5.2)'
EXEC(@view)

I am trying to build a Windows application using: Windows XP Pro ; VS Pro 2005, C# and SQL2005.
I have 2 database table3 as follows:
eg
1) myGameRecency which contains columns : GameId (identity specification column/primary key/not null), Date (not null), [1], [2], [3], [4] , WeeksSinceDr0, WeeksSinceDr1, WeeksSinceDr2
2) myGameFrequency which contains columns : AllBallsFrequency , WeeksSinceDrawnAllBalls
Using the myGameRecencyAllBalls table ---
I wish to insert a 0 into a column corresponding to a ball that has been drawn, eg if a 4 has been drawn, then a 0 will be inserted into that column. If a ball has not be drawn, then the value in that column will be a running total, signifying the number of draws since it was last drawn ( ie since a 0 was inserted into that column).
I place a 1 in the column corresponding to the number of weeks since a number has been drawn. The name of the column is therefore the concatenation of the string literal 'WeeksSinceDrawn' and the value held by the variable, @lastRowCount obtained by the lastrow_CURSOR.
I have declared a variable @colName to hold the concatenation / Set @colName = 'WeeksSinceDr' + CONVERT(nvarchar(max), @lastRowCount) and then tried to use it as follows: SET [@colName] = 1
however, I receive an error message advising me that I have an invalid column name. Is there any means of setting a column name by concatenating two variables or , a string literal and a variable ?
Thank you
lpbcorp
sqlCmd.CommandText = "DECLARE @colName nvarchar(max) " +
"DECLARE @lastRowCount int " +
"DECLARE lastrow_cursor CURSOR SCROLL FOR " +
"(SELECT [" + i.ToString() + "] FROM " + DBGameName.ToString() + "RecencyAllBalls) " +
"OPEN lastrow_cursor " +
"FETCH LAST FROM lastrow_cursor INTO @lastRowCount " +
"SET @colName = 'WeeksSinceDr' + CONVERT(nvarchar(max), @lastRowCount) " +
"IF @lastRowCount <= 175 " +
"BEGIN UPDATE " + DBGameName.ToString() + "RecencyAllBalls SET [@colName] = 1 WHERE Date = '" + Date + "' " +
"END " +
"ELSE " +
"UPDATE " + DBGameName.ToString() + "RecencyAllBalls SET WeeksSinceDrOver175 = 1 WHERE Date = '" + Date + "' " +
"CLOSE lastrow_cursor " +
"DEALLOCATE lastrow_cursor";

I have a big problem to solve:
I use MsSqlServer 2000, Analysis service. I have cubes and virtual cubes. I have a dimension of consult, they have a hierarchy that change every month. for example: In june the consult "John" is in D11, in September he is on D14,...
Hierarchie: D10 -> D11, D12, D13 - > C1, C2..
For this reason when i want analysis The consult John in a year(12 months) my result is wrong. With this changes in the hierarchie my analysis become wrong!
I thought in the end of every month store the cube in a local cube, like a picture of every consult, with his sales e others measures. With this i can analysis the consult in a specific month rightly, but i need the anlysis in a year. And in a year i would have 12 local cubes, then i could acess them and do a right analysis. How could i access 12 local cubes? Can i create a virtual cube with this 12 local cubes? Is there another solution for this problem?
Thanks,

Greetings,
Here's what I need to do. I need to programmatically create offline cubes for multiple customers. Using VS2005 (C#) and SQL Server 2000, I am able to do this using the CREATE GLOBAL CUBE command. However, I need to create cubes from SQL Server 2005 as we have upgraded and the CREATE GLOBAL CUBE command does not work as it did before. I've search and found examples using AMO, but they create a server cube. I already have a server cube.
I need to be able to create filtered offline cubes from the existing server cube. I've also read much on XMLA, but that doesn't do it for me either. The code below creates an empty offline cube. However, is there a way to use this to create a cube with data?
I am creating this in a windows application.
Server server = new Server();
server.Connect(@"Data Source=C:MyLocalCube.cub");
server.Disconnect();
Can anyone help? This is driving me nuts!
