Log File Alert And Negative Free Space!?

Sep 24, 2007

We've got an alert setup on our production database to warn us when the log file(s) exceeds 7 gigs. The Alert is triggering:

"The SQL Server performance counter 'Log File(s) Size (KB)' (instance 'Lexus') of object 'SQLServer:Databases' is now above the threshold of 7000000.00 (the current value is 7057656.00)."

However, according to the file system, the database properties screen files, and properties tabs, the log files combined are at under 5 gigs so this alert should not be going off.

The scary part is, when going to right-click on the database, choosing "tasks" and going to "Shrink > Files", the "Free Space" shows negative numbers for the first log file:

Log 1
Currently Allocated space: 118.69 MB
Available Free Space: -5323.24 MB (-4485%)

Log 2
Currently Allocated space: 4853.13 MB
Available Free Space: 411.20 MB (7%)

Has anybody ever run into this? Should I be worried that there is a bigger issue at hand?

Thanks!

Moving Tempdb To Free Up Disk Space

Nov 29, 2000

does anyone know if tempdb can be physically moved to a different partition on a disk drive on SQL Server 7.0? Since it can't be backed up I'm hesitant to use the sp_detach/sp_attach procedure because I don't want to crash it. If nothing else is available, I can attempt moving it this way at the end of the day and then just reboot to get tempdb back up again if the server fails, but I'd really appreciate a suggestion from someone who has more know-how than I do about system table operations. Thanks again

Checking For Free Disk Space And Getting Mail , When Falls Below A Certain Limit

Sep 13, 2006

Hello

I have a script which checks the disk space and when it falls a certain size , it mails the dba mail box.

I would like to know how I can change it , as a percentage calculation.

For example when the free space is less than 20% of the total space on the drive I should be receiving a mail.

The script I have is :

declare @MB_Free int

create table #FreeSpace(
Drive char(1),
MB_Free int)

insert into #FreeSpace exec xp_fixeddrives
-- Free Space on F drive Less than Threshold
if @MB_Free < 4096
exec master.dbo.xp_sendmail
@recipients ='dvaddi@domain.edu',
@subject ='SERVER X - Fresh Space Issue on D Drive',
@message = 'Free space on D Drive
has dropped below 2 gig'
drop table #freespace

Thanks

Issue Of Blank Emails When Checking For Free Space On Disk Of Servers

Sep 22, 2006

Hello

I have got a script which checks the percentage of free space on the drivers of the servers and mails the DBA when it falls below a certain percentage , which can be set according to our requirements.

But I am getting blank emails even when , there is no issue of low free space.

Please help me out.

The code , 1st part of it is:

use master

declare @minimumspace int
set @minimumspace = 10
set @msg = 'Running out of Hard Disk space on the Server: '+@@servername
exec usp_diskspace @minimumspace,@msg OUTPUT

Data File Size Alert By Email

Sep 14, 2012

I've set up an alert to email me whenever the database is over a certain size. The amount is calculated by taking 80% of the total data file size. The problem I'm having is that it keeps generating a false positive alert because MS SQL seems to treat the currently used value as the total allocated space for the database data file. For example, the data file is 100MB, it's currently using 60MB, and if I enter 80MB in the alert, it generates an email alert claiming the current size is 100MB. Could it be because the data file size is set to 100MB (since autogrowth is disabled)?

Setup And Upgrade :: Cannot Create Database Object Alert On Clustered Instance

Aug 25, 2015

We have installed 2014 sql server on a stand alone VM and can create alerts without issue.  We recently did a cluster install of 2014, and when trying to create alerts get the following error:

The specified object_name ('Databases') does not exist.

Specifically, we are trying to create a database alert on percent log used that will kick off a job to back up the log.

We are on Windows 2012R2 o/s.  In the drop downs in SSMS under alerts, we do not have all the options we have in the stand alone instance - they are not there.  Is this a bug?  Is there a CU?

Hello everybody

Had some problems yesterday with a full transaction log. Was able to solve it by following microsofts knowledge base article n° 272318.

However, today I'm trying to create a new DB using the enterprise manager and get this error:

The free disk space is > 60GB. That's by far enough... I only need 1-2 GB.

Any ideas what's wrong here?

Thanks anyone in advance for some guideance.

Should The Quorum Disk Be A Physical Disk Or Majority Node Set?

Nov 15, 2006

Hello,

I am trying to setup a test cluster and am having an issue. When I try to create the resource of a physical disk it takes both the drive e: and drive q: and doesn't seperate them into two physical disks as resources. This means when I try to associate the quorum disk it links the to physcial disk resource of drive e and q. Then when I try to install SQL2k5 I get the warning about installing SQL on the quorum disk. Am I missing something? Is there a way to seperate e and q onto two physical disk resources so I can specifically associate the quorum to q and the sql to e or should I be setting the quorum disk to a majority node set? Thanks in advance.

And realised that my nice responsive varchars had a maximum total size. so I changed them for 'slower' text data types. but my DB still won't allow any more input.

has the limit been reached now regardless of what I change or can I rebuild the DB to recover the space or something?

Create View, Varied Results Depending On Row Size

Mar 11, 2004

This is the same issue as deinfed in http://www.dbforums.com/t987543.html

I've done some additional testing and got it down to the below

SQL2000 DB
Linked Server to DB2 using client access odbc, and MS OLE DB for ODBC

Varied results depending on the row size of the views.

See the below examples.

CREATE VIEW BLHDR_TEST
AS
SELECT STNST
FROM LURCH_PARADB.S102D4LM.PARADB.BLHDR

STNST CHAR(25)

TOTAL ROW WIDTH (25)

SELECT * FROM BLHDR_TEST

Returns 20971 rows * 25 = 524,725

CREATE VIEW BLHDR_TEST
AS
SELECT STNSHTNAM, STNST
FROM LURCH_PARADB.S102D4LM.PARADB.BLHDR

STNSHTNAM CHAR(12)
STNST CHAR(25)

TOTAL ROW WIDTH (37)

SELECT * FROM BLHDR_TEST

Returns 14169 rows * 37 = 524,253

CREATE VIEW BLHDR_TEST
AS
SELECT STNADD1, STNSHTNAM, STNST
FROM LURCH_PARADB.S102D4LM.PARADB.BLHDR

STNADD1 CHAR(40)
STNSHTNAM CHAR(12)
STNST CHAR(25)

TOTAL ROW WIDTH (77)

SELECT * FROM BLHDR_TEST

Returns 6808 rows * 77 = 524,216

CREATE VIEW BLHDR_TEST
AS
SELECT STNCTY,STNADD1, STNSHTNAM, STNST
FROM LURCH_PARADB.S102D4LM.PARADB.BLHDR

STNCTY CHAR(25)
STNADD1 CHAR(40)
STNSHTNAM CHAR(12)
STNST CHAR(25)

TOTAL ROW WIDTH (102)

SELECT * FROM BLHDR_TEST

Returns 5140 rows * 102 = 524,280

Test #1 Returns 20971 rows * 25 = 524,725
Test #2 Returns 14169 rows * 37 = 524,253
Test #3 Returns 6808 rows * 77 = 524,216
Test #4 Returns 5140 rows * 102 = 524,280

With the similarity of the total byte count returned, I would assume that a buffer or something is being overrun, is this a configuration parameter possibly.

If I perform the select against the linked table as such

Select * (for fields list)
From LURCH_PARADB.S102D4LM.PARADB.BLHDR

I get all rows returned. The issue only exist when accessing the views that are created against the linked server.

Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

SQL Server, Disk Arrays And Disk IO

May 7, 2004

Hi all,

Ok here goes,

I have a three tier system using SQL server 2000, we are currently experiencing IO bottle necks on our SCSI Raid 10 array, which holds the Data and the logs in separate partitions.

So my options as I understand it are:

Get Enterprise edition

or

Get another physical raid 10 array and separate the logs and data i.e. data on one array and logs on the other array.

I would like to try the latter but I am totally unsure how much difference this will make or whether it will make any difference at all.

Does anyone know how much performance increase I will get from using two arrays as opposed to one?

Any other advice on this scenario would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
