Create Backup File
Apr 10, 2008
Hi,
I am trying to create a script that will create a backup (or copy) of an sdf database.
I have a database already in my application working nicely and want the user to have the option to backup that file so if anything goes wrong they will be able to click a button and it will restore all the data to the database. I am not sure which options are best for me. there are 3 main ones i have considered, these are:
1) Create a text file with all the data in it.
2) Create a HTML file with the data in it.
3) Create an xml file with the data in it.
Help would be appreciated. Thanks =]

I know this is easy but I am having trouble creating a database from a backup file.
I created a database (Test).
Then I selected 'Test', went to Tasks and selected 'Restore Database'.
I selected 'Device' browsed to the backup file.
I choose the destination database to be 'Test'.
There is no backup sets listed to restore. The 'OK' button is disabled.
How do you get the backup list to display? This is a new database. I don't need a backup.

This script will read the contents of a DB backup file, and generate a restore command.
Set the value of parameter @backup_path to point to the backup file, run in Query Analyzer, cut/paste the output into another Query Analyzer window, modify as necessary, and run.
This is just a barebones script to demo how this can be done. Modify as necessary to meet your own needs.
Works in SQL 2000 and 7.0. May work in SQL 2005, but it is not tested.

Using SQL Server 2005 Server Management Studio, I attempted to back up a database, and received this error:
Backup failed: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Backup and file manipulation operations (such as ALTER DATABASE ADD FILE) on a database must be serialized. Reissue the satement after the current backup or file manipulation is completed (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Program location:

Backup Options were set to:

I am fairly new to SQL 2005. Can someone help me get past this issue? What other information do I need to provide?

I got full backup on daily schedule its taking more space on Drive because each file has more than 25GB.I am using SLQ server 2008R2 so I'm looking to take the backup with compression instead of uncompressed Backup. What are the impacts of compressed backup. Is there any problems with compressed backup while restoring the backup file.

I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.
How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write
restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak'
restore database. zy
from disk = 'path and filename.bak'
with replace,
move.....
move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.
Thanks in advance for any help.

My customer got a total hard drive failure. After sending it to drive recovery specialist we were able to recover the LDF log file (MyDB_0.LDF).But the MDF file was completely destroyed (MyDB.MDF).They have a good full backup from a month ago.
1) Installed SQL Server 2012 on a new PC
2) Created a new database of same name (MyDB) - with same MDF and LDF file names as original
3) Took the new database offline
4) deleted the MDF and LDF files of the new database
5) put "MyDB_0.LDF" in the place of the LDF file I just deleted
6) put the database back on-line
7) after hitting F5 to refresh databases - it shows "MyDB (Recovery Pending)"
8) tried to do Tail Log Backup with this command
BACKUP LOG [MyDB] TO DISK = N'C:BACKUPMyDB_TailLog.bak'
WITH NO_TRUNCATE
And I get this error...
Msg 3447, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Could not activate or scan all of the log files for database 'MyDB'.
The sad thing is I know we can get this data back using ApexSQL-Log. I can see all the transactions since the last full backup in this program - so the log file is not damaged. But my client doesn't want to pay the $2000 fee for this software. There has to be a way to restore this data, without having to purchase a third party tool.

I have used the copy database wizard, but I realized I had forgotten to shrink the transaction log file. So I canceled the wizard. My database, detached by the wizard, has now disappeared. The mdf file is still there, but when I try to attach it manually I get the "create file encountered operating system error 5 while attempting to open the physical file..." error.
Any way I can recover it?
Thanks.

Hello friends,
I have the following (simplified):
1. Flat File Source
2. Conditional Split, Case Good = !ISNULL(KEY) Case Error = ISNULL(KEY)
3. Case Good -> Writes to Good Flat File (with timestamp in the title)
4. Case Error -> Writes to Error Flat File (with timestamp in the title)
Most job runs have no errors but the error file is created as a zero byte file anyway. If there are no error records I don't want the error file created. How might I accomplish this?
Thanks

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me. I'm having problems using backup in Enterprise Manager, the backup continually fails and points to a hardware problem. However, I have been able to backup files using different software to tape which rules out hardware.
I'm trying to create a new backup device incase the problem lies there but I receive the error 'error15061: Add device request denied. A physical device named '%s' already exists'
Any ideas?
Cheers

Hi,
Is it possible to shrink a DB thru .NET.
Presently I have to go into the SQL server 2005 studio to shrink the DB.
To shrik the DB I right click on the DB and select all tasks -> Shrink -> DB
How would I do this thru SQL codse?
I would like to do it thru my VB.NET code as you would compact an ACCESS DB.
The reason I want to set it thru my code is :
The clients that use my program have no clue of
SQL or for that matter computer itself.
I just want them to click on a button on my application which should
do the shrinking.
Similarly for backup of the DB.
Tnx

Hi,
I tried to backup the master key by the following syntax :
OPEN MASTER KEY DECRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'mypassword'
BACKUP MASTER KEY TO FILE = 'c: empmaster' ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'mypassword'
but it failed and i got the following message:
Cannot write into file 'c: empmaster'. Verify that you have write permissions, that the file path is valid, and that the file does not already exist.
NB: I am using the "sa" user to execute this command.
I know that we have a security permission issue , but where and how ?

Hi there,
After a bad server crash, the only remnant we have of our SQL server database are the .mdf and .ldf files in the MSSQL7/Data folder. Can we restore this database from either of these files and if so, what is the procedure? Sorry but I'm an SQL server newbie.
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
I dropped a SPROC, and was in the process of reacreating it when I lost power. Now I don't have the SPROC except for in an old backup file.
Is there anyway to get this without restoring the DB ? If not, can I easily restore to a different DB name and then delete it? My backups are on my live server and I don't want to overwrite my current DB with my backup :)
thanks for any suggestions!!
