Is there any way to create a new database directly as a user instance. I guess this means creating a new mdf/ldf pair which is detached from the server after its created.

Feb 20, 2007Got windows Vista Business edition, installed Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express SP2, SQL Server Management Studio SP1 in that order. I was developing in VWD express without problems using WinXP but now on Vista Business, the local connection to SQL server appears to be a problem.
I know there's nothing wrong with my web.config or anything like that as it was working perfectly prior to running under Vista. If i specify the database on the live website, it works fine. If I specify the test database in app_data folder, I get the following exception:-

I am taking a guess it's somerthing to do with access issues, but can't find anything out on searching the forums etc..
I am setup as an administrator, running VWD as an administrator and for the record, SQL Server Management Studio express works fine.
Another small issue, when I run the application from VWD, I always have to minimise the application and restore it as the graphics get corrupt.
Please help!! I cannot debug when running of the live website.

When i'm working on the machine were it's installed , under debugging, all works great.
But when i try to develop from my laptop, via RDP on the develop machine, i've got this message and can not debug (connect to the SQLxpres Server)

my web app was working fine but as soon as i added in a page and few store procedures and 2 tables it just pop up with that error message.

i did go into the folder C:Documents and SettingsdnguyenLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server Datasqlexpress and delete the directory but this didnt help much. I still get the same error message. please help

I am new in .NET development and currently trying to learn VWB through Microsoft online tutorials.
Here is the problem that prevents me from getting further:
in VWB, when you right click App_Data and chose "Add New Item" and then select SQL database, the following error message is displayed:
"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed."
If I cancel out of it, it does generate mdf file under App_Data folder in Solution Explorer, but when I try to open it, it says:
"The item does not exist in the Web directory. t may have been moved, renamed or deleted." and that is where the whole sharade deadends.
I can connect via mycomputersqlexpress under Data Connections in Database Explorer (it then adds "master.dbo" to the path) and then create custom tables, but that is not the same, isn't it? I mean, this will not integrate my database tables through default configuration that I am trying to follow?
All this happens on local machine.

I was able to do do this before until Saturady when I had to re-install sql server, and express etc due to some system problem on my xp Pro PC. What have I misconfigured?
I do see the service SQL Serer(SQLEXPRESS) started under Network Service and SQL Serfver(MSSQLSERVER) started under local system.
My power user ID does have modify access to the sql 90 database folders. and to the mdf.

Mar 12, 2006No wonder Microsoft is giving it away for free. It€™s not worth anything. I am very disappointed in this version of SQL server. I decided to start learning VB so I downloaded and installed VB 2005 express edition and SQL 2005 express. I tried to build a personal website using the starter kit. I kept getting the following error message, for which I have seen numerous postings on this forum.
€œFailed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.€?
I went out and bought the Standard version of VS 2005 thinking there may be a feature that the free express version is lacking. I uninstalled the express version, cleaned the registry, deleted all the folders it created and installed the Standard edition. Then I tried to create a personal web using the starter kit and it does the same thing again.
I can not create a database file, connect to a database file. I can not create or attach a database on the SQL 2005 express from VS 2005. The SQL server Express seems to be working OK since I can attach to it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express. There is something about the way VS tries to connect to the database server that is not working. VB does recognize the local computer as a SQL server but can not connect to it.
SQL server is set to accept Shared memory, TCP/IP and named pipes for local clients.
What is causing this?

User In Instance Vs Database
Nov 28, 2012I'm database novice and would like to get confirmation or correction on my understanding of the difference between a user under a sql server instance vs a user in a sql server database. For example, a user can be added under Instance-->Security--Login and a user can be added under Instance-->Databases-->Database Name-->Security-->Users.
Is the difference that the login under the instance is used for logging into the database via management studio and the user under the database is for database access? Also, is one dependent on the other? So if I want to add a user to the database, they have to be added to the instance first?

I create a SQL Server Express instance (say "X") via a silent install
I supply a script to create a database in instance X.
The idea, of course, is to have a fully automated install. But there's one problem I can't quite see how to work around:
- the CREATE DATABASE statement needs the name of a file to contain the database, and that file needs to be in a folder that belongs to the instance (e.g. Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1, Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2, etc).
Is there a syntactic variant that allows me to avoid this problem?

User Instance Property In VWD Express Database

As per my understanding, if the user instance property is set to true for an express database then it is not multiuser/shared. A copy of the database is made for each user so he works on his private data. On the other hand, if user instance property is set to false then the express database is multiuser/shared. Thus different users will connect to the same instance of the database and changes by one user will be seen by the other users.
Now, if we use an express database with asp.net and our application is installed on IIS then it is mandatory for the express database to have the user instance property set to true. But we see that in this case when different users visit our website, the data they enter goes into the same common database, ie. all the users share the same common database, even though user instance is true for the express database.
Please shed some light to explain the correct functionality of the user instance property as related to the express database.

Problem In Restoring Database In User Instance
Mar 17, 2007Hi, Folks. I hate to have to come back and ask about restores right after I had to ask about Back ups, but I'm in a bind and can't seem to find other resources that address this issue.
I'm using VB Express 2005 and SQL Express 2005 to develop a windows form application that uses a User Instance of a database. With help from this forum, I was able to get the backup working. Now, I can't get the restore to work. Here's the code I'm using:

Hi all. I have read and implemented the very helpful threads on backing up and restoring with user instance posted with MFriedlander. Thank you. However, during the rs.SqlRestore(srv) command I am getting the following error "Restore failed for Server '\.pipe4A1F91FF-F6FE-45 sqlquery'. "
"Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use."
I have implemented the changedatabase method as described in that thread.

right before the line

I do not use the default instance of sql express, but I do use an instance called 'test' for my app. Should my changedatabase method also refer to my sql instance?

Aug 25, 2015We have installed 2014 sql server on a stand alone VM and can create alerts without issue. We recently did a cluster install of 2014, and when trying to create alerts get the following error:
Msg 14262, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_verify_performance_condition, Line 52
The specified object_name ('Databases') does not exist.
Specifically, we are trying to create a database alert on percent log used that will kick off a job to back up the log.
We are on Windows 2012R2 o/s. In the drop downs in SSMS under alerts, we do not have all the options we have in the stand alone instance - they are not there. Is this a bug? Is there a CU?

I'm using VS2005 + SQL Compact 3.1 and Enterprise Library 3.1 May 2007
I can successfully create a db using pull method, when I try to push back data I got the following SQLCE error:
"Another user has opened the database with different instance-level initialization properties. [ 32 ]"
Before calling the push method I did

What I don't understand is:
why I'm getting this error even after closing the connection ?
Since the error report [32] the ssce conflicting parameters shoud be AUTO_SHRINK_THRESHOLD, FLUSH_INTERVAL and MAX_DATABASE_SIZE
I tried to cut & paste the same values from LocalConnectionString into app.config connection string, at first It seemed to work, but now I got the same error.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Apr 15, 2007I've been using my DotNetNuke database for weeks on my local PC with SQL Server Express. It attaches as a "User Instance". Basically, I am using all the DotNetNuke defaults. Today I decided to attach the DotNetNuke database in SQL Server Management Studio Express and peek at the tables. I attached the database; then I detached it when I was done. This all went well. But when I tried to open my DotNetNuke web site again I now get a message that it cannot connect. Attaching and detaching the database in SQL Server Management Studio obviously changed something about the database, but I don't know what. My connection string to the database has not changed.
The specific error displayed in the browser is:
ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider
In event viewer is this message:
Exception information:
Exception type: SqlException
Exception message: Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
My connection string is this:
<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
Any suggestions about how I can correct this?
Create A Named Instance On Top Of A Default Instance

I've never had to do this, but when I downloaded the Web Workflow Approvals Starter Kit, it requested that I install the database into a User Instance of .SQLEXPRESS.
Now the problem is, I've installed it onto a default instance, so I was wondering whether you can create a named instance on top of a default instance... and if so, how would you do that?

Jul 17, 2015I have a Java application (APP) that use SQL Server 2008 - 20014. In the SQL server there can be more than my database. During setup of the database the first user (ex:ADM) is created using MS SQL Server Management Studio (SMS). ADM can then launch the APP with proper credentials and connect to the database.ADM can then, in the APP, create new users for the APP and database. After some testing for proper CREATE and GRANTS I use the following code to create a new Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) user for the APP and database: CREATE LOGIN testuser WITH PASSWORD='password', DEFAULT_DATABASE = testdb

USE testdb..When I the use the SMS and look at security the "testuser" is only added to testdb. To test I create a second database "testdb2" --> launch the APP to connect to testdb2 and can login with "testuser".I don't know if I give to much grants or missing one...proper TSQL so new users only have CRUD access to "testdb" and no other database on the SQL server.
Trying To Create A New User With Windows Authentication For My Sql Database
Dec 30, 2007I have a website written in asp.net and the current DATABASE logins do not use windows authenticaton. They are for online use only with a username and password. I'm trying to run my program locally on my machine and access the database locally. This is very frustrating. I'm able to connect to my database, but I can't login to it. Here's my connection string from ym webconfig file:
<add name="sqlConnectionString" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" connectionString="Connect Timeout=8; Initial Catalog=linkexchanger; Data Source=SCOTSQLEXPRESS; "/>
I have the MSSQL engine running and I have connected with the SERVER. My database is in my directory tree of Microsoft SQL Management Studio Express. The server is SCOTSQLEXPRESSI have attempted to add a login to my sql database by right clicking on the security folder to create a new login. My understanding is that under windows, I don't need a uid and pwd in my connection string . Thus I tried removing all of this just as you see above, and I get an error message every single time I try to create a login with windows authentication.
Can someone please explain how I make this work?

Then, i hv created a user in SQL Server 2000 which is User1. What should i put for the database role? db_owner or just db_datareader and db_datawriter?

Create Database Diagram And Send To User
Aug 11, 2014I've been tasked to create a database diagram, save it and send that db diagram to the user. Now, I am confused as I don't know where sql server stores the db diagram...what is the path where it stores the diagram. How do I export it in case if I need to provide it to the user. How, am I supposed to grant user permission so he himself can create a database diagram.

Help:SQLExpress User Instance Fails For Normal User; Works For Administrator
Jan 22, 2008I'm using the RTM version of Visual Studion 2008 and SQLServer Express.
Logged in as an administrator, I can create a connection to an mdf file and all is well.
As a normal user, attempting to create a connection gives the message "sqlservr.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I have tried this with UAC turned on and turned off. The result is the same. In Services I can see that SQLEXPRESS is running, but each time I try to connect, I get the "stopped working" message.
For existing database programs that have the .mdf file stored in the project folder, I can run the program in the VS IDE on my XP machine and on my Vista machine as administrator, but not as a normal user.
I'm not looking for a workaround to make this work once, but the cause and solution to the problem. This is for an introductory VB textbook and we must be able to move a database program from one machine to another and make it work. Everything I have read says that SQLExpress should be able to do that.
Can anyone help me with this?

Basically I have had to change pc's so I copied and pasted my ASPNET.MDF and LDF from my old pc to new PC including webpages/apps etc.. created.
However now all I get is "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path """"
Just don't understand what permissions the db should have, does it need to match the SQL Express owner...
any help would be most appreciated

Jun 21, 2005I installed my asp.net 2.0 web application and sql express june editon on my windows 2003 server.When the application tries to reach the database i am getting the following error"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed."I can understand that it has something to do with user right but more than that I am pretty lost. Can anyone translate this error for me and give me some tips on what do to.I checked first the user running the sql express service and saw it was the NETWORK SERVICE user. I changed it to be the local system account but that did not make any difference. The application is running just fine on my local computer(Win XP sp2). This one has SQL express April edition though.

Oct 23, 2007I'm setting up a simple SSRS implementation for a non-profit organization, using two servers hosted at a data center. The first server has SQL Server Standard Edition and Reporting Services installed. I've designed and deployed a number of useful reports on this server.
I was hoping to isolate this first server by installing IIS and SSRS on the second server, have users browse from the Internet to that second server (over SSL, of course), and have all reports served up from databases (and, presumably, the report server database) on the first server.
During the installation of SSRS on the second server, however, I'm being prompted to specify the service account. According to the help text:
"Reporting Services. Service accounts are used to configure a report server database connection. Choose a domain user account if you want to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance. If you are using a local report server database, you can use a domain user account or Local System to run the service."
I believe I want to configure SSRS to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance; therefore, it appears that I need to enter a domain user account. The only problem is, neither server belongs to a domain; they are members of a simple two-server workgroup.
Does SSRS, configured to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance, require a domain? Does what I'm hoping to accomplish require a domain? Creating a two-server domain seems like overkill for this implementation, doesn't it?
