DB Design :: Script To Create Table With Primary Key Non-clustered And Clustered Index

Aug 28, 2015

I desire to have a clustered index on a column other than the Primary Key. I have a few junction tables that I may want to alter, create table, or ...

I have practiced with an example table that is not really a junction table. It is just a table I decided to use for practice. When I execute the script, it seems to do everything I expect. For instance, there are not any constraints but there are indexes. The PK is the correct column.

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tblNotificationMgr](

Set Name Of Primary Key In The CREATE TABLE

Apr 28, 2008

I think there has to be a way to do this but I'm not seeing it.

I would like to set the names of my primary keys in the CREATE TABLE statements. I like this for documentation so it's very clear what the PK name is. When the system generates the key names, it always add the number suffix at the end. I would need to do this both when the PK is a single column and when it is multiple columsn (see examples below).

Thanks very much for your assistance.

CREATE TABLE dbo.SecAppRole1 (

app_id INT IDENTITY(1,1),

app_name_field VARCHAR(128) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY ,

app_role VARCHAR(128) NOT NULL,

app_role_password VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL)

CREATE TABLE dbo.SecUserAppPermission1 (

app_id INT NOT NULL,

windows_user_name VARCHAR(128) NOT NULL,

user_permission CHAR(01) NOT NULL,

PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (app_id ASC, windows_user_name ASC))

Update Statement Performing Table Lock Even Though Where Condition On Clustered Primary Index?

Jul 20, 2005

Hi All,I have a database that is serving a web site with reasonably hightraffiic.We're getting errors at certain points where processes are beinglocked. In particular, one of our people has suggested that an updatestatement contained within a stored procedure that uses a wherecondition that only touches on a column that has a clustered primaryindex on it will still cause a table lock.So, for example:UPDATE ORDERS SETprod = @product,val = @valWHERE ordid = @ordidIn this case ordid has a clustered primary index on it.Can anyone tell me if this would be the case, and if there's a way ofensuring that we are only doing a row lock on the record specified inthe where condition?Many, many thanks in advance!Much warmth,Murray

Create INDEX Within CREATE TABLE DDL

Jan 27, 2006

Hi Minor and inconsequential but sometimes you just gotta know: Is it possible to define a non-primary key index within a Create Table statement? I can create a constraint and a PK. I can create the table and then add the index. I just wondered if you can do it in one statement. e.g. I have: CREATE TABLE MyT (MyT_ID INT Identity(1, 1) CONSTRAINT MyT_PK PRIMARY KEY Clustered, MyT_Desc Char(40) NOT NULL CONSTRAINT MyT_idx1 UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED ON [DEFAULT])which creates a table with a PK and unique constraint. I would like (pseudo SQL):CREATE TABLE MyT (MyT_ID INT Identity(1, 1) CONSTRAINT MyT_PK PRIMARY KEY Clustered, MyT_Desc Char(40) NOT NULL CONSTRAINT MyT_idx1 UNIQUE INDEX NONCLUSTERED ON [DEFAULT]) No big deal - just curious :D Once I know I can stop scouring BOL for clues. Tks in advance

CREATE INDEX On Large Table

Jul 23, 2005

SQL Server 7/2000: We have reasonably large tables (3,000,000 rows)that we need to add some indexes for. In a test, it took over 12 hoursto CREATE a new INDEX against this table. One of us suggested that wecreate a temp table with the new index and copy the data from the oldtable into the new one, then rename it. I understand this took 15minutes. Why the heck would it be faster to move the data and buildmultiple indexes incrementally vs adding an index??

Can't Create A Full-text Index Or Catalogue On My Sql Table.

Sep 28, 2006

I am trying to run an SELECT statement with a CONTAINS statement from a aspx.net solution built using Visual Web Developer 2005 express edition. When I try to run the thing it throws an error saying

"Cannot use a CONTAINS or FREETEXT predicate on table or indexed view 'JournalArticle' because it is not full-text indexed.".

I don't have access to the SQL Express server, I interface through Server Management Studio Express. There is an option to create a full-text index from the menu, but it is greyed out, presumably because there is no full-text catalogue. This is my real question, How do I create a full-text catalogue using Server Management Studio Express? The help function only provides examples of sql code, which I assume must be performed using sql server (which I don't have access to). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

How To Automatically Create New Records In A Foreign Table When Inserting Records In A Primary Table.

Import Csv Data To Dbo.Tables Via CREATE TABLE && BUKL INSERT:How To Designate The Primary-Foreign Keys && Set Up Relationship?

Jan 28, 2008

Hi all,

I use the following 3 sets of sql code in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to import the csv data/files to 3 dbo.Tables via CREATE TABLE & BUKL INSERT operations:

-- ImportCSVprojects.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE Projects

(

ProjectID int,

ProjectName nvarchar(25),

LabName nvarchar(25)

);

BULK INSERT dbo.Projects

FROM 'c:myfileProjects.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO
=======================================
-- ImportCSVsamples.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE Samples

(

SampleID int,

SampleName nvarchar(25),

Matrix nvarchar(25),

SampleType nvarchar(25),

ChemGroup nvarchar(25),

ProjectID int

);

BULK INSERT dbo.Samples

FROM 'c:myfileSamples.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO
=========================================
-- ImportCSVtestResult.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE TestResults

(

AnalyteID int,

AnalyteName nvarchar(25),

Result decimal(9,3),

UnitForConc nvarchar(25),

SampleID int

);

BULK INSERT dbo.TestResults

FROM 'c:myfileLabTests.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO

========================================
The 3 csv files were successfully imported into the ChemDatabase of my SSMSE.

2 questions to ask:
(1) How can I designate the Primary and Foreign Keys to these 3 dbo Tables?
Should I do this "designate" thing after the 3 dbo Tables are done or during the "Importing" period?
(2) How can I set up the relationships among these 3 dbo Tables?

Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Clustered Index On Client_ID+ORderNO+OrdersubNo, If I Create 3 Noncluster Index On Said Column Will It Imporve Performance

Dec 5, 2007

Dear All.

We had Teradata 4700 SMP. We have moved data from TD to MS_SQL SERVER 2003. records are 19.65 Millions.

table is >> Order_Dtl

Columns are:-

Client_ID varchar 10
Order_ID varchar 50
Order_Sub_ID decimal
.....
...
..
.
Pk is (ClientID+OrderId+OrderSubID)

Web Base application or PDA devices use to initiate the order from all over the country. The issue is this table is not Partioned but good HP with 30 GB RAM is installed. this is main table that receive 18,0000 hits or more. All brokers and users are using this table to see the status of their order.

The always search by OrderID, or ClientID or order_SubNo, or enter any two like (Client_ID+Order_Sub_ID) or any combination.

Query takes to much time when ever server receive more querys. some orther indexes are also created on the same table like (OrderDate, OrdCreate Date and Status)

My Question are:-

Q1. IF Person "A" query to DB on Client_ID, then what Index will use ? (If any one do Query on any two combination like Client_ID+Order_ID, So what index will be uesd.? How does MS-SQL SERVER deal with these kind of issues.?

Q2. If i create 3 more indexes on ClientID, ORderID and OrdersubID. will this improve the performance of query.if person "A" search record on orderNo so what index will be used. (Mind it their would be 3 seprate indexes for Each PK columns) and composite-Clustered index is also available.?

Q3. I want to check what indexes has been used? on what search?

Q4. How can i check what table was populated when, or last date of update (DML)?

My Limitation is i Dont Create a Partioned table. I dont have permission to do it.

In Teradata we had more than 4 tb record of CRM data with no issue. i am not new baby in db line but not expert in sql server 2003.

I am thank u to all who read or reply.

Primary Key Index

Apr 1, 2004

Hi,

I have a table in my SQL 2000 database called utContact, this has a primary called ContactID (int, idenitity), by default this should have a clustered index on it, but when I go to view the indexes on the table it shows the primary key index as non clustered.

How can this be?

SQL server also will not let me change the index to clustered, but I need to as this is causing a lot of table scans in query execution plans.

Any help or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Primary Key With Cluster Index

Oct 9, 2007

Hi All,

One of my client having 1 million(nearly) records in a table.
I defined the table as below
1) Created table with one col(we can name it as "ID") having IDENTITY
2) Using "alter table", I created CLUSTERED PRIMARY KEY Constraint on Same field (ID)
3) The Primary key having 2 ref with another 2 tables

Now the issue is when we create or define a primary key (With Clustered Option) automatically cluster Index will be created on defined table

As such table having huge data whenever any updation or insertion against that particular table taking huge amount of time, because the cluster Index trying re-paging whole data. Because of re-paging each and every time "Transaction Log also growing in huge" (database is in full recovery mode and client wants in same mode only)
Data partitioning not posible because whole data related and current live data

I tried following options with vain

1) To Clear transaction log I suggested to take regular log backup's
2) I tried to drop cluster index and tried to implement non clustered index
Drop and re-create index is take taking huge amount of time
Even in this process I have to Re_Index remaining Index's also

Pls give me any other solution or suggestion in this regard

with Thanks & Regards

Primary Key With Non-clustered Index

I want to keep certain archive data in certain tables. One such table is currently about 190 GB in size. It has a primary key with clustered index and three non-clustered indexes. The type of queries fired are strictly selects (daily) and inserts (only monthly).

Question: Is it advisable to have a non-clustered index on the primary key column?.....I am finding that the insert performance is getting hurt due to presence of clustered index on such a large table (190 GB).

Let me know your views.

Index Statistics And A Primary Key

Sep 5, 2007

Hi

I have a question regarding updating statistics for a primary key.

Background: An update statistics with fullscan is sometimes taking 30 minutes - the table is 80 million rows, with only 4 columns. The table is truncated, and then 80 million rows inserted all in one go.

Now why the update stats is taking that long is another question (I have no idea - any thoughts?), but my question is; Since you can't disable the "not automatically recompute statistics" option for a primary key, and you would think it would be imperitive for the stats to be kept up to date for a PK for inserts.... does this mean the stats would be kept up to date? and an update stat with fullscan isn't required?

Hope someone can help

Thanks
James
