Named Instance Problems (Default Of 7.0/2000 Instance)
Oct 10, 2001I am trying to set up a Named Instance of SQL 2000 on the same machine that has a default instance of SQL 7.0. The setup always completes and I am able to register the Named Instance of the SQL Server with which it was installed on. However, when I try to connect the users to the database, with both windows and SQL authentication, I receive a SQL server not found error. I have tried an alias setup as well as physically specifying the port number in settup up an ODBC connection.
Has anyone ran into similar problems?
Also, has anyone been able to successfully complete the process as mentioned above?
Connection String For Default Instance Of SQL Server 2005, On A Box Also Running A Named Instance Of SQL Server 2000
Nov 15, 2007The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server.
There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However, I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.
Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated

Creating A New Named Instance

As understand it, the only way to add another SQL Express 2005 named instance is to run SQLEXPR32.EXE again. However, when you to, right at the end, you get the following error message:
"An installation package for the product MS SQLK Server VSS Writer cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'SQLWriter.msi'"
So, I deleted all named instances, and the repeated the procedure and did not get this error and it installed fine. Obviously, I would not be able to delete all instances, but in this case it didn't matter.
So, here are my questions:
Question 1) Am I correct you must rerun SQLEXPR32.EXE to create a new named instance? (I think the answer is yes)
Question 2) Is there a way to rename an existing named instance? (I think the answer is no)
Question 3) The install/uninstall for SQLEXPR32.EXE is incredibly buggy. I have spend days trying to remove an named instance with no succes. Once your remove all named instances from Control Pannel, you stll have not removed SQL Express 2005. How do you remove it? We are considering other avenues because of the incredible problems with this product. Also, we inadvertantly installed SQL Express 2005 Advanced Services, when we meant to install SQL Express 2005, so we would like to uninstall Advance Serviuces and reinstall SQL Express 2005
Question 4) I am switching from the Outlook Express newsgroups to these groups. In the context of these groups, what is the difference betwee a Forum and a Newsgroup?

Reconnecting Access 2000 Front End To New Instance Of SQLServer 2000
Jul 27, 2004I recently had to reinstall a new instance of SQLServer 2000, but was unable to use the previous server name. As a result, my Access2000 front end is not happy with it's linked tables. I can't seem to find anyplace within Access to universally change the address of the SQLServer used as the back-end for all linked tables.
When I do try to access the linked tables through Access, I get an error, and the option to change the server location. When I try to type-in the new SQLServer location, there is an attempt to reconnect to SQLServer, but a whole lot of errors are generated, and none of the data is transferred into the Access table.
I really don't want to have to re-do my Access front end, so it seems it would be easiest to somehow reinstall SQLServer to have the same server location it used to. Is there a good way to completely erase all traces of SQLServer so that I can have better luck reinstalling it to the same location it used to be in? Just using the uninstall program from SQLServer doesn't seem to be cutting it.

Creating Second Instance In Sql Server 2005

I just need some information on creating the second instance in sql server 2005. In my production server we have the databases with different collation. we need to separate those two different collation databases by creating the new instance. I have to create the instance by this afternoon. I think we need to install the sql server 2005 again and select the option of named instace. As long as this is production server are databases are going to be available for the users while installing the sql server to create the different instance? Could some one please respond on this. Hi guys, need help again.
I'm running packages from C# code and thus I need to create an instance of SqlServer.DTS.Runtime.Application.
In my maching, creating the application instance doesn't even take 1 sec but when the application was deployed to our QA server creating the instance took 30 secs (always ... every single time with no exception).
this single code is taking the 30 secs:
Application integrationService = New Application();
Does anyone have any idea what I need to check or configure to make this faster?

I am facing a problem with Bussiness Intelligence Development Studio of SQL server 2005 developer edition.
I have SQL 2005 Developer Edition in my machine which has Microsoft Windows XP professional as Operating system and I don€™t have admin rights. I am getting error as given below when trying to launch the connection manager dialogue box from the IDE to add a new connection manager or to edit the existing connection manager in a SSIS package

The CLSID {C8B522D0-5CF3-11CE-ADE5-00AA0044773D} refers to Oledb32.dll in the registry.
With Admin access i am able to launch the connection manager dialogue box to add a new connection manager. But i need to open the dialogue box without Admin access.
Note : I am able to launch the new connection manager window from Bussiness Intelligence Development Studio of SQL server 2005 Express edition with out admin privileges.

Install Sql 2005 Instance With Reporting Service 2005 On Sql 2000 With RS 2000 Server

We would like to install Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition (including database engine, reporting service, integration service and analysis service) as a sepearte instance on a server which already has Sql 2000 with reporting services and analysis services. We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.
If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?
Please help us.

Upgrade A SQL 7.0 Instance To 2000
Jun 13, 2001I started with a SQL 7.0 installation and installed an instance of SQL 2000. The default instance is SQL 7.0 as expected and both run fine. However, now I'd like to upgrade the SQL 7.0 instance to SQL 2000, but the setup procedure on the install CD only allows you to upgrade/modify the SQL 2000 instance. It seems as though once you've chosen to install SQL 2000 as an instance, you do not have the opportunity again to upgrade the SQL 7.0 instance in place. I tried to remove the SQL 2000 instance and reinstall 2000, but the procedure does not give you the opportunity to upgrade the SQL 7.0 instance -- only to modify the programs installed. Any suggestions?
(I could use the Copy Database Wizard to move all databases along with associated stored procedures, logins, etc., but then I'd have to mess with DTS packages, etc.)
Registering Instance Of SQL 2000
Jan 29, 2001I cannot register, from my W98 workstation, an instance of SQL 2000. I just installed SQL2000 (evaluation edition) on my server. Previous to my install I had MSDE installed on the server and successfully registered it from my W98 workstation. When I installed the SQL2000 it recognized there was already a version of SQL Server (MSDE) on the server and said that was the default. Hense, I installed the SQL 2000 as an instance using the format servernameinstance. I can see both of them on the server EM with no problem--I just can't register the SQL 2000 instance from my workstation. When asked for the server name I use the format servernameinstance as it appears in the EM on the server. However, I get the error that the server does not exist or access is denied.? What could I be overlooking? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hopefully someone can help me. I am trying to upgrade SQL 2000 on a Win 2000 SP4 server to SQL SP4. The server has 2 instances. The one instance upgrades fine with no issues, however when I try to upgrade the 2nd instance I get "<instancename>" is not a SQL 2000 instance. I am a bit stumped so any help in this regard will be much appreciated

Clustering An Existing Instance Of Sql 2000
Jan 15, 2007We have a client running a 3rd party app on sql 2000 Enterprise on Windows 2003 Advanced attached to a new SAN. They are looking at adding another SQL server and clustering for failover. Anyone done this before. Do you have to reninstall sql server on the original box to do this. This a a heavily used app, so downtime is always an issue.

Alias For SQL 2000 Named Instance
Aug 12, 2002We have a two node activepassive SQL Server 2000 cluster SP2 running on Window 2000 advanced server SP2. Everything is working fine including failover. Today we migrated over our 7.0 databases to the SQL cluster and they attached fine and upgraded fine but we would like to shutdown the 7.0 server and bring up the clustered SQL Server under the old name. We will be running 3 instances of SQL Server 2000 on the Cluster so at least 2 of these will be named instances like this: "Virtual serverinstance". Is it possible to create an alias for this SQL Server so that we could access the server under the original name of the server???

Jul 23, 2005Hello,we use two instances of the ms sql server 2000 (Version: 8.00.760) on a4 processor windows 2000 (sp 4) machine.A dts-packet on one instance completly blocks the work on the otherinstance. Both instances have 2 dedicated processors. The twoprocessors of the blocked instance are in idle states.How is this possible? New SQL 2005 Instance Using 2000 Engine?

I installed SQL 2005 Standard on the same server (2K3) with SQL 2000. My named instance I installed is coming up with "Version 8.00.2039" in the Server Management Studio and will not let me restore a database back-up I made on a 2005 development workstation (I'm assuming it's because it's trying to use the 2000 engine instead of the 2005). Is there a way I can force this instance to use the 2005 engine rather than the 2000?

I Forgot My SA Password For My Instance Of SQL 2000

I have SQL 2000 and I forgot my SA password and cannot login as administrator using windows authentication.
Is there any way to reset SA password?
"Mixed Mode" authentication is enabled.
If I change authentication mode in register to Windows only and then after restarting SQL change it back to Mixed, will it reset SA password to "null"?

Restoring From 2000 Backup To 2005 Instance
Nov 13, 2006I did a backup of a SQL2000 database (named Winstis) using the 2005 management studio. I then created a blank database on my 2005 instance (named Winstis). I then tried to do a database restore to the new 2005 database. I got an error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'Winstis' database. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
I even tried the option to Overwrite Existing database and I got a different error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLData est.ldf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Also the 2005 instance database is on C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataWinstis_Data.mdf
and the 2000 instance is on
D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataWinstis_Data.mdf
How can I accomplish getting the database from 2000 to 2005 with all tables, store procedures, and functions?

Apr 8, 2008I have about 4 SQL servers that have SQL2005 as the default instance and SQL2000 as a second instance. My problem is that I can not connect to the SQL2000 instances using the instance name. I can get to it using IP address and port number or if I set up an alias with IP and port number, but not by name (ie ServerNameSQL2000 which is how the instance was named). If the process is reversed (install SQL 2000 first and then SQL 2005) I can get to both instances using instance name.
I read something about if SQL2005 Browser service is running when SQL2000 service starts, the SQL2000 service won't listen for calls, but it was rather vague and I am not real sure if that is true. I am in the process of trying to test this to see if it is true, but due to the nature of the servers, I have to follow a process and it will take me a couple of days before I can test.
So I was hoping to find someone to deny or confirm this. Or who has had a similar issue and can shed some light on this for me. Thank you for you time. I appreciate it.

Cannot Connect To A Named Instance Of SQL 2000 Or 2005

I am struggling connection to a named instance of SQL 2000 (SP4) from another machine but without any success. I get an error message saying that the server does not exist or access is denied.
The security configuration in this named instance is the same as the default instance (also 2000) and the remote machine can connect to it successfully.
I also configured the aliases in Client Network Utility in the client machine and set the server (machine) name and the port number used by the instance - but no help.
I use osql and Query Analyzer to connect to it, but I cannot connect by any of them.
Connecting locally, in the machine where the instance is installed, is successful.
The same behaviour appears when I try to connect to another instance on the machine which is 2005.
Something with the named instance is problematic.
Any help?
Can Not Remotely Connect To Instance Of Sql Server 2000
Aug 10, 2006I had a big problem on connecting sqlserver remotely from other machines on the network .....
From any computer in the network i wanna to register the instance of the sqlserver from the enterprise manager ..... the server instance doesn't appear within the available sqlserver list (the servername which equal to my machine is the only one that appear) ..... when i manualy write the servernamealias manually and i choose the connection type and then i write sqlserver username and password and then finish he give a message to me that access denied or sql server doesn't exist ... !!
by the way from the local machine i registered the local instance of sqlserver successfully and successfully i access the Databases .....
To be noted:
I previously uninstalled this alias and i then i reinstalled it again with the same name and i attached the previously exists Databes.
in the same time i installed on the same machine sqlserver 2005 connectivity clients not the server itself.

I need to move a large number of reports from a 2000 reporting services install to 2005. I've used the RS Scripter utility with some success. The issue I'm having is migrating history.
Can history be migrated without upgrading the reportserver and temp db to 2005? We'd like to preserve our 2000 environment while we move...although I suppose we could create another RS instance and copy the database, do the upgrade - but how would we merge our existing 2005 install with the upgraded 2000.
