Creating System Dsn To SQL Server 2000 Sp 4 Fails

I hope someone can help me out here? I have a fresh install of SQL Server 2000 (standard edition - sp4), on a server running Windows 2003 SE (v 5.2.3790). I am trying to create a system dsn on my client pc (running Windows 2000) to a newly created database in SQL server called BLISS.
I am getting the following error message:
Connection failed:
SQL State :'01000'
SQL Server Error: 11001
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Connection Open (Connect()).
Connection Failed:
SQL State :'08001'
SQL Server Error: 6
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Specified SQL server not found.
From support.microsft.com I have tried changing the TCPPort value to 0, but this has not helped. Does anyone have any further ideas please?

Does anyone know of a way I can create a trigger on a system table (say sysdatabases in master). I know this is not supported but presumably there's a way it can be done by referencing it's equivilant in Information_schema somewhere.
I'm trying to write a script that will automatically set up a backup schedule for a database that has just been created. I was hoping the trigger would query the sysdatabases table for new database name entries, log necessary info in an audit table and then call a backup script to set up the schedule. Any ideas??

I would like to create a database for keeping track of payroll data for employees where the supervisors (job coaches) on our workshop floor can use a Pocket PC device to record the hourly employee data on the fly. Then at the end of the day, the supervisor can place the device in a cradle of some sort and synch the newly entered data into the main database.
I'm guessing that SQL Server Compact edition would be perfect for this type of task? Is that correct? Can someone give me recommendations on how to go about setting this up? What should I use as the main database? SQL Server? Access? Any advice is appreciated!

Apr 3, 2007Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :

Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?

Creating A System.Management Assembly In Order For My Own Assembly To Work?

I am a bit paranoid about what I just did to my SQL Server 2005 with this CLR experiment.
I created a Class Lib in C# called inLineLib that has a class Queue which represents an object with an ID field.
in another separate namespace called inLineCLRsql, I created a class called test which will hold the function to be accessed from DB, I referenced and created an instances of the Queue class, and retrieve it's ID in a function called PrintMessage.

to access this from the db, I attempted to create an assembley referencing inLineCLRsql.dll. This didn't work as it complained about inLineLib assembly not existing in the db. I then attempted to create an assembley for inLineLib but it barfed saying System.Management assembly not created.
so what I did is (and this is where I need to know if I just ruined sql server or not):
1- ALTER DATABASE myDB SET TRUSTWORTHY ON;.
2- CREATE ASSEMBLY SystemManagement
FROM 'C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727System.Management.dll'
WITH PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE
3- CREATE ASSEMBLY inLineLibMaster
FROM 'D:inLineServerinLineLibinDebuginLineLib.dll'
WITH PERMISSION_SET = unsafe
4- and finally
CREATE ASSEMBLY inLineLib

Everything works after those steps (which took some trial and error). I can create a sproc like:

EXTERNAL NAME inLineLib.[inlineCLRsql.test].PrintMessage
and it returns the Queue ID
Is there anything unadvisable about the steps above?

when i go to http://servername/reports , the UIlogon.aspx page loads fine and i enter username and password. but i get logon failed.

Jul 20, 2005Hi,I have a few things on my databases which seem to be neither true systemobjects or user objects - notably a table called 'dtproperties' (createdby Enterprise manager as I understand, relating to relationship graphingor something) and some stored procs begining with "dt_" (some kind ofsource control stuff, possible visual studio related). These show up whenI use"exec sp_help 'databaseName'"but not in Ent. Mgr. or in Query Analyzer's object browser, and also notin a third party tool I use called AdeptSQL. I am wondering how thosetools know to differentiate between these types of quasi-system objects,and my real user data. (This is for the purpose of a customized schemagenerator I am writing). I use System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection and System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand to make the connections to the database and do selects and updates. Is it correct to continue to use these against SQL Server 2005? I ask because I made a connection string (outside of .Net) for SqlServer 2005 using the SQL native provider and it had the following - Provider=SQLNCLI.1 and any connection strings I had made (also outside of ASP.NET) fro SQL Server all used Provider=SQLOLEDB.1. This is why I wondered if there is a different SqlClient in .Net 2.0 for SQL Server 2005?

I created a .net console application within which I connect to a sql server (not local) as follows,

conn.Open();

Everything works fine when I run it from my computer. When I try to run it from a network share I get the following error,
Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
I am using Visual Studio 2005 and .Net framwork v2.0.50727.
Does anybody know a fix to this problem?

Jun 20, 2007I have a report that uses some embedded custom code. The embedded custom code is a function that execute some sql query on a sql server database.Everything works fine in Visual studio. The report gets deployed on the server successfully, however when running the report from report manager i get the following error message :

Why do i get the error message ?, is this related to Code Access Security issues with .net framework. if yes
how do i set the Security so the report server or report manager allows embedded custom code to be executed. Any advice ?

SQL Server On New System
Aug 21, 2006I have been migrating my ASP.net applications and SQL databases to a new system. It is through a different company. The system has more security then I am familiar with. The system is administrated through a software called PLESK, which is starting to piss me off. The SQL Server has two Server Groups the local and XXX168. My database is on the local server.
I am using the following statement to access the SQL Server:

Will SQL Server Bog Down My System?
Oct 17, 2007I am new at dbforums and this is my first post.
I have 512M RAM, run at about 1.8Ghz and have plenty of disk space, but am concerned that, if I install SQL Server, it will run as a service all the time and bog down my system. Are there any thoughts on that? I want to use it for learning.
Are any of the other common free versions of databases better than SQL Server as far as consuming resources than SQL Server, for example the free versions of Oracle, DB2, Postgres, MySQL, or any others?

Jun 19, 2008I'm getting this error on a vb.net page the needs to execute two separate stored procedures. The first one, is the main insert, and returns the identity value for the ClientID. The second stored procedure inserts data, but needs to insert the ClientID returned in the first stored procedure. What am I doing wrong with including the identity value "ClientID" in the second stored procedure?

Creating A SQL Server 2000 Compatible .BAK File From SQL Server Management Studio Express
Jul 11, 2007Hi,My webhost (1and1) is running SQL Server 2000 and their web tool supports the import of .bak files. However, when I try to import my .bak files created in SQL Server Management Studio Express I get the following error:"The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server
supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally."I have Googled this error and learnt that 2005 .bak files are not compatible with 2000 .bak files. I'm just wondering if there are any work arounds to this or alternative tools that I can create 2000 compatible .bak files from from 2000/2005 .mdf files.Thanks in advance.

I have two problems on creating new SQL server database in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express using SQL server 2005 Express.
The 1st problem: (It is resolved)
After installed SQL Server 2005 express and Visual Web Developer 2005 Express. When I tried to create a SQL server database in VWD the following error occurred:
"connection to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL server express 2005 to function properly. please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=49251"
I was stuck with this problem for few days. I did several times of install/reinstall of VWPExpress and SQL server Express, made very sure following proper de-installation sequence as specified in the release readme. But it did not resolve the problem.
Latter I found out that if I login with another Windows XP user account, I don't get the problem.
Changing the security authority of XP file systems and IIS didn't help.
And to prove that I was doing the installation correctly, I tried a new installation of the VWDExpress with SQL server 2005 express in another machine, it worked and I could create new empty SQL database.
After 2 days of frustrating changing of options, parameters, server names, messing with the registry etc.... Finally, I found a way to overcome this problem.
The solution is:
In Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, select:
Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> Data Connections,
Change the setting: "SQL Server Instance Name (blank for default)" to "SQLEXPRESS". (where SQLEXPRESS is the default server instance name)
That solved this 1st problem.
I still don't know the exact reason for this problem. But I recalled I did installed the VWDExpress few weeks ago, I might have installed it without selecting SQL server 2005 express at that point. I guess the subsequent install/re-install did not clean up those junk in the registry.
I still have the 2nd problem:
The "Create new SQL database..." option is always grayed out when I right click on the Data connections in the "Database Explorer" tab.
I have a bypass for this difficulty for time being:
I have to do it by using the "Add connection....", put in the server name: "myserver/SQLEXPRESS" and a new database name.
Any input form anyone ? Appreciated!

SQL Server System Alerts
Feb 27, 2002Maybe a dumb question, the standard alerts like Severity 24 and 25 that come when you install SQL Server, will these alerts be called by SQL Server itself if there is a problem. I was going to set up notifications for these but wasn't sure if it was worth the trouble.
